Snapping of Audio Regions

Good Day Everyone,
My primary tool for audio editing for the last 8 years has been Pro Tools TDM on a Mac G4. I have begun using Logic Pro as an additional editing environment, but I'm hitting a few snags (my own ignorance, of course) when dealing with moving and snapping audio regions.
In Pro Tools, I constantly perform these functions:
Snapping start of region to marker position.
Snapping end of region to marker position.
Snapping start of region to end of another region on another track.
Snapping end of region to the start of another region on another track.
Creating sync points on region, so other regions can snap to it.
I am having problems performing these editing functions in Logic Pro.
Any advice or examples would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Albert.

as long as you're happy to work slightly differently, you can do all of these functions easily and often more quickly in logic (sometimes not).
you will need to assign key commands. can i just say; it is with key commands and the various editing methods that make logic really powerful. take a while to really go through the key commands and check what you can assign. an awful lot of functionality is locked up in there, not accessible through the menus.
Snapping start of region to marker position.
assuming you know how to set markers in logic, set a key command for "goto marker #" or "next/previous marker".
set a key command for "pick-up clock; move event to song position line".
simply hit the marker you want, select the object (or event - it works with almost everything) and hit your pick-up clock key command.
Snapping end of region to marker position
do the above, then open the sample edit window (double click or set a key command). drag the anchor point to the end of the region * (you may want to set key commands for zoom levels as you may not see the end of your region and dragging the sliders all the time can be...well...a drag)
Snapping start of region to end of another region on another track
if you have "smart snap" enabled, the SPL will snap to the end of the region. you can then use the above techniques to move your other region there. *
Snapping end of region to the start of another region on another track
you can set a key command (also very useful) "goto object event" which will move the SPL to the beginning of the note/region/whatever. you can use this in conjunction with the other techniques i have mentioned or again just use "smart snap". just drag the SPL along the object and it will snap to beginning ends and anchor points.
Creating sync points on region, so other regions can snap to it
you can only create one sync point per region which are called anchors. so if you have a spot in the region you want other files to sync to, move the anchor point there, snap the SPL to it and then you can use the pick-up clock command to move the objects to the SPL/sync point.
other ways of moving regions/objects is by dragging, control-dragging, shift-control-dragging, for ever increasing resolution. try these they're great. also use all of this in conjunction with control-drag enclose to select an area to zzoom up on and control click the background to zoom back to normal.
* bear in mind that logic is a music programme and so is designed to be used in a musical way. therefore it is much easier and designed to be used in terms of bars and beats, rather than beginnings and ends of regions. if your audio files were recorded in a musical way and match the underlying tempo, then moving your audio files would be as simple as moving to the right spot in the bar.

  • Is there a way of moving/quantizing multiple audio regions at once to the nearest bar/beat/division?

    Hi,
I'm having trouble finding a solution which I hope turns out to be fairly simple. Here's my problem:
I often make drum beats from audio files that looks something like this:
What I'd like to know is if there is a way to highlight say all of the snare audio regions and snap or quantize the "audio region start" to the nearest beat or division. I've been looking everywhere and I just can't seem to find a way to do it to multiple regions at once. It seems like somehting that should maybe be fairly simple. Turning "Flex" on doesn't work as that quantizes the transients as opposed to just the start of each audio region.
The reason I ask is that sometimes when zooming in fully, it turns out some of the regions are not exactly on the grid line.
I hope I made sense there and I'd appreciate any help. Many thanks in advance.

    Hi
The "traditional" way to quantise audio regions is to use the quantise functionality in the Event List.

  • Need help with resizing audio regions

    Hey guys,
When I resize an audio region it seems to snap to maybe 1/128th of the bar to the left or right of the beginning of a bar... (and it changes, sometimes like 1/64) for example:
I resize an audio region to end it on a bar and instead of it ending on 9 - 0 - 0 it ends on 9 - 0 - .05. So I have to zoom in horizontally to around 90% to get the region to "snap" to the beginning of a bar and its really time consuming.
This brings me to another question... how can I get logic to zoom in on the time identifier line? not just the middle of the view?
    (example) my view port will be from -1 - 0 - 0 to like 30 - 0 - 0 but the timeline identifier is on 25 - 0 - 0 but it zooms into the middle of the view port to 14 - 0 -0
Any way to get it to snap to like 1/32 when resizing ?
    Thanks
    J

Never mind, i found it as soon as i asked.
    THanks

  • MOVING AUDIO REGIONS PROBLEM! HELP!

    SO, I recorded a 3 piece band live...great,
when i was recording guitar overdubs, i dragged the audio regions over to make room for a guitar intro, but i didn't select all the other overdubs...oops.
after recording the intro at that location, i found that some of the other overdubs weren't lined up!!!
Is there a way to snap regions back to where they were recorded relative to other regions!
**NOT move region to original record position. that doesn't help because the original record positions are different for different overdubs. I tried dragging them back manually, but that takes forever, and i'm afraid there will be phase issues if it's not exact where it was tracked. please help.

Well, I tried the undo list which I haven´t used before. Mainly because I never make mistakes.
I admit I couldn´t get it do it exactly the way that would be useful for you. It´s not like actions in Soundtrack Pro. The undo list gets slightly confused if you try to undo one action in the middle of many. I actually get warnings about messed up time continuums and other sci-fi like messages...
The event list thing is really handy. If you open a previous version of your song where the regions are where they´re supposed to be you can select them. Open the event list. There you´ll see where they all start.
Make a mental note of where the first or topmost region begins (or double click and copy the info). Switch to song 2. Select the relevant regions. Move all these regions to the same start as in song 1.
(Or you can do it one region at a time, hence the suggestion to have two edit lists open simultanously. Time consuming, but possibly succesful.)
    Hope this helped!

  • How to enlarge audio regions without timestretching (adding silence) ??????

In the Arrangement , id like to be abl to enlarge audio regions , so they fit in the length i need , but im not speaking about timestretching .
I explain myself : I have many short audio files in my arrangement . To be able to manipulate easily these regions , i want to enlarge them so they fit in the bars or in the loop , then i can just copy them or move them accurately . this is useful for un quantised region , wich can be a little difficult to move and copy .
Basically i want that logic creates a new audio file with silence before or/and after the region . Is this possible ?? How ???
    than in advance

hi dup -- I think this will fix your problem:
1 - Slice off ( with the scissors tool) a bit of any audio region that already exists, copy it (apple C) and then paste it a little way away from your original audio region(OAR) on the same track. Then rejoin your original piece of audio region.
2 - Place the Song Position Line ( SPL) exactly where you want the new audio region (NAR) to start. Let us say it is at bar beginning of bar 3 or if you are using time code 3seconds.
3 - Select your snipped bit of new audio region(NAR) and using the key command 'Catch Clock' - the audio region will snap right up against the SPL. ( Make sure OAR is not selected or it will also move ..which you dont want )
4 - Now select the NAR and go to the Audio menu and find the command Convert Region to New Audio File. This will turn the NAR into its own independent piece of new audio.
5 - Double click on the NAR - the Sample Editor will open. Go to Function and select the command for Silence. This will turn the NAR into a completely silent lump of audio.
6 - Now you have a Silent lump of audio ( NAR) and your old region(OAR) from which it originally came from. Select both and use the command for Merge. ( This default key command is sometimes J)
7 - A box will come up which says something about 'non contiguous regions.. do you want to create a new audio file?'
    The answer is YES
Here is a sort of diagram:
    {NAR} {OAR}
    becomes
    {NAR++OAR}
The piece above which says Original Region will have your audio sound.. but NAR and all the new stuff in between.... + will be as Wm Shakespeare said "the rest is silence"

  • Unable to edit an Audio Region (just want to change gain)

    Hello,
In a particular audio region I am unable to change gain in that the "Change Gain" command (as well as all the other functions) are Grayed-out FOR THIS REGION. I am in Sample Editor>Functions>Change Gain.
There are over 200 audio regions in this file. Most of them have NONE of the edit functions grayed-out.
A few other regions have all the edit functions Grayed-out except for Change gain.
Almost all of the audio regions are from apple loops. I have not edited any of the regions except for some regions ending points, and volume automation added.
Why would this one particular audio region ("Country Night") by un-editable?
(NONE of the tracks are locked.)
    please help

Is it a file in .caf format? If so, note that compressed Audio formats can't be edited destructively. Convert to aiff/wav before.
Btw, there is a Gain function in the Region Inspector since Logic 9, so there is no need to change the gain in the sample editor anymore.

  • Setting the project tempo to match an audio region

The manual is pretty clear on how to do this but it talks in terms of one bar audio regions vs. an entire song. I'm trying to do a remix of a song that has subtle although very definate tempo variances throughout. The audio file of the original is imported into Logic and I've tried Options>Tempo>Adjust Tempo using Region Length and Locators but it's giving me one global tempo which does not match up when I compare the audio file to the click. It's not telling me where the tempo changes occur in my tempo track either. I'm wondering if it's even possible to do this. I could beatmap it? I don't know. Should be an easy thing to do.
I suppose a workaround could be to bus the audio file to an aux and then record that aux's output like I was recording it live but that seems like overkill.

The best tool for this is the beatmapping track. It's pretty easy to do, depending on your material, and it will conform Logic's clock to your audio's tempo, with appropriate tempo changes.
Once you beatmapped your track, Logic is in sync with it and you can then add sequences and use quantize etc.
If you are not sure how beat mapping works, shout back...

  • Midi notes or audio region do not play at the start of a bar?

I am having an issue with a midi loop I have created. If I let the song play a bit until it reaches the loop, logic works just as you'd expect it and everything plays correctly. But if I stop the song, or if I set the song into cycle mode so it repeats, the very first note of the midi loop is ignored, and not played.
So for example, if I set the cursor to start at bar 9, the starting point of the loop, the first midi note is not played. But if a set the cursor at bar 8 and let it play into bar 9 and the loop, all of the notes in the loop play correctly.
I found the following description of the same problem on another forum, but it seemed to suggest that there is no fix for this, which if true, seems kinda bad for a pro application. I was wondering if anyone knew of a workaround or fix to this, because its really annoying missing the notes, or having to expand the cycle region just to get all of the notes to play. Here is the text from the other forum:
_Logic doesn't play the very start of my audio regions when I start playback_
Question: If a region starts at e.g. 1 1 1 1, and it starts playing from the same position, it seems that Logic misses the first few samples - which is especially noticeable with fast-attack transients.
Answer: Apparently Logic doesn't use some kind of pre-play buffering. The workaround is to have your entire song start e.g. one bar later, at 2 1 1 1, and let Logic play from 1 1 1 1. This workaround obviously doesn't work if you've set up a cycle - in which case Logic will miss the first samples when it starts playing as well. Next time it loops through the cycle it does play properly. There's no workaround for this - it's a serious shortcoming of the way Logic handles audio playback. With cycles, you could resort to using the Pause instead of the Play button/command: this will let you start playback from somewhere before the start of the cycle instead of starting at cycle-start (which is what Play does).

    I'm having the same problem.
one workaround is to change the delay to +1/192=20 in the delay box in inspector on the given midi track...but this is a terrible thing to have to do over and over again.
PLEASE help if you know what's going on.....I ran logic on my macbook and this NEVER happened. I just bought a macbook pro 2.5 and it's apparently now an issue?
I have searched the net for fixes, and none work....logic does have a pre-play buffer, but it's range isnt large enough to buffer the instrument I'm using...which means the range is less than 1/192...come on....that's messed.
If anyone figures this out, please message me back at [email protected]

  • Beat Mapping is changing speed of audio region, not the metronome!!!

    Hi Everyone,
I just today learned about beat mapping in Logic. I used it on one song that i'd recorded previously without a click track and it worked like a charm. I'm trying to use it on a different song now (same situation: previously recorded with no click) but for some reason with this song, it's changing the speed/length of my audio region to match the metronome instead of changing the speed of the metronome to match the speed of the audio. What's going on?!
    Thanks a bunch.

Well after many hours of searching through Logic Forums and flipping through the Logic Reference Manual, all to no avail, I've finally figured out what the problem was. I needed to uncheck the "Follow Te(mpo)" option in the Region Parameter Box for the region I was trying to beat map. The beat mapping process wasn't actually changing the length/speed of my audio region like I said it was in my initial post; it was simply playing over it slower or faster in order to preserve the audio-to-tempo ratio as I made the tempo slower or faster. All I needed to do was uncheck that little box and now beat mapping works exactly as described in the Reference Manual. WHY ON EARTH is the "Follow Te(mpo)" box not mentioned when discussing beat mapping?! More importantly, why is it not mentioned ANYWHERE in the entire Reference Manual?!?!? NOT ONCE!!! unbelievably frustrating.

  • Overlap audio regions on 1 track without cutting the previous one off

Im trying to overlap multiple audio regions on one track, so that the next one starts before the previous one ends but when i do this, each consecutive overlap basically replaces the remaining region of the one before it. to be more specific in order to maybe paint a better picture of what i am asking... i am creating machine gun audio for a video clip and i have a loop of a single shot plus the shell falling to the ground. im trying to overlap the loops so that the single shot of each come together in rapid fire succession to create the machine gun firing sound, but i want the sound of the shell falling for each shot to continue to play under the multiple copies of the overlapping loop. the problem is, when i overlap multiple loops, its not finishing the noise of the shell falling to the ground for each shot, it only plays the falling shell at the very end when there is no other overlap. i hope i did an ok job explaining what i am asking, haha trying to type this out was much more difficult that initially anticipated. thanks in advance for any help.

That's normal. Audio tracks are not polyphonic. Use several tracks or EXS24.

  • When recording audio, the soundwaves dont show in the audio region.

I think i must of changed settings accidentally or somewhat, because prior to this, there was no problem. However, now when i record i cant see soundwaves (im not sure what they're called) in the audio region. please help, its really giving me problems cos i really wna record audio.

Try the waveform zoom slider in the lower right hand of the arrange.
If that's not it then check your recording delay in preferences>audio, supposedly if it is set too high what you describe happens.

  • Jerky track and Audio Region movement

I am playing back some GB sessions that i made in GB 08 that worked great. They play back okay in '09 as well but the scrolling is super jerky now making it hard to accurately edit automation and such. Why would these sessions all play back silky smooth on GB 08 but be all jerky in GB 09 with zero changes? I saved the session as a new GB 09 session thinking that was it, but no the playback is still jerky. Is there something i can do to make this smoother?

HELP!! certain audio regions in my session just suddenly stopped playing. other ones around them play its like they're on mute but they're not! I dont know wat to do

Have you tried to reset GarageBand?
Go to the "My Songs" view to save your current project, quit GarageBand, and the open the "Settings" app. Scroll down to the applications and select "GarageBand". Enable "Reset".
Check, how much free memory is left on your iPad.  Playing certain instruments requires a lot of memory. You may need to make more space by deleting apps or documents, i.e. videos, photos, music.

  • Copy/paste automation data in audio regions

    Hi,
A dumb question but I'm having trouble figuring out...how do I copy and paste automation data in audio regions? When I copy and paste an audio region I like, it pastes down the selected region but without the automation data with it. I've been rewriting the automation data every time to the newly-pasted region but I'm sure there's a simple way to do this. I've looked through the various help files but still am struggling to find the procedure. Any advice is welcome and thank you.

OK, for viewers of this topic I figured this out myself. There are two lines in the reference manual that pertain but even they were a little confusing. They read:
"Option - long clicking on a selection allows you to copy the selection." p.234
I had success by using the pointer tool and selecting the automation data within the region by holding shift+dragging the mouse over the target data. The data highlights white. Then with the pointer tip on a line of the selected data, holding option+long clicking the selection AND dragging the data while still holding the option key I was able to drag and drop the automation data to a new region in the track. That got me "in the ball park" so to speak but fine tuning the actual drop was necessary to assure precise nodal location. That can be done node by node or better by dragging the entire automation selection as a loop edit.

  • Question on locked audio regions

I saw a Logic 7 video a few days ago in which a locked audio region had its start point dragged to the right. This process shortened the region but left the new region with exactly the same bar/timecode position as before. I don't seem to be able to do this in Logic 9. Has this facility been removed?

...but in the video I mentioned the locked region's front end was dragged while the region was still in the arrangement window. That looked a really handy feature and I still can't work out if it's still possible in Logic 9.
