Snapshot rollup with Long term backup to Tape

I need to reconfigure the short term disk storage, and wanted to know if I create a Long Term backup to tape, does that
store or encompass all the "snapshot/short term" backups that I have on disk?
If so, I will be able to remove all my disk backups, reconfigure it as needed, and re-enable the short term backups without losing any of my historical backups. (For Legal reasons)
Thanks!

Hi,
No, Long term to tape are also "point in time" backups and if started now will only contain new recovery points. The ability to make backups of previous recovery points is not very easy, you basically need to restore a disk based RP to tape, unfortunately,
every restored recovery point to tape requires a separate tape.

  • Using flash drives for long-term backups

I use a USB flash drive to backup my mom's iPhoto Library. I've heard, however, that flash drives are not reliable for long-term backups. Is this true? If so, what is the best alternative?

I have seen several DVD's that simply won't work after only a few years.
yes, I'm not a fan of DVD-Rs either. they do go bad pretty quickly (especially cheap ones) - quicker than flash drives in my experience. Personally, i only use regular external drives (and lately cloud storage) for backups.

  • Are long term backups created from short term tape full + incremental?

Does DPM use short term tape, Full + incrementals to create the long term Tape backups?
For example, if i run a short term to tape full with incremental against a computer with a 1 week retention then run a long term recovery point every 1 week for for 4 weeks and 1 recovery point every month for 6 months.
will all the long term RPs actually run a full backup or will they build one from the previous full plus incremental?
    My question is two fold,
    1. i am concerned about total long term storage
    2. I am concerned about time needed to complete the full backup.
    Thanks!

DPM doesn't support incremental backups to Tape. Tape Backups are always full.

  • Short-term backup to tape

    Hi,
What are the pros and cons of using tape (VTL) for short-term backups in DPM 2012 R2?
The reason this might be an option is that we are using a Virtual Tape Library (EMC DataDomain) which provides great deduplication rates.

    Hi,
I don't see any real cons except that the virtual tapes cannot be taken offsite, however that VTL does allow for replication to another DD VTL offsite, so that is a good option if $ is not a problem.
As mentioned, it does do dedupe, so if you backup the same data you get incredible dedup savings. Speed and reliability are other pro's for VTL since dirty tape drives are no longer an issue.

  • DPM 2012 SP1 long term backup fails when protected server reboots

    Hi,
    we're using DPM 2012 SP1 with Short-term and long-term protection.
We use a daily short-term backup to disk and a weekly long-term to tape.
We are noticing that when a long-term tape backup is running, it fails when we reboot one of the protected servers.
Is anyone else having this issue ? I assumed the long-term tape backup will be created from a disk-recovery point.

    Hi,
What is the detailed error code in the properties of the failed initial replica or consistency check job ?

  • DPM 2012 - stand alone drive - Short/Long term protection to tape

We are migrating from BE to DPM 2012. I'm trying to configure DPM 2012 for both short term & long term protection - both using tape (stand alone drive). The goal is:
Daily backups (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu) - 2 weeks retention
Weekly backup (Friday) - 4 weeks retention
Monthly backup (last weekly backup) on every month - 15 m onths retention
I've configured the short term protection for daily and weekly backups. Monthly backups are configured under long term protection. Daily and weekly backups are working as expected. However when it comes time for the Monthly, the DataSet copy jobs are failing.
As I understand it, DPM is expecting another drive to copy the weekly backup tape.
How I can achieve above goals ? Backup to disk is not an option.

    Hi,
Any time DPM schedules a dataset copy job, you will need more than one tape drive, there is no way around that requirement.

  • QM, Inspection Lot with Long-Term and Required Characteristic

I want to know if it is possible to print a Certificate of Analysis (COA) with a required, long-term characteristic, if the inspection lot is using the special function "Short-Term Inspection Completed". And then a special Usage decision is made.
Our dilemma is that we have materials that must be shipped for pre approval with a COA, before certain QM tests have been made, and we want to be able to print the COA, but the required flag stops us.
So, what we really want is to require the characteristic if it is one usage decision and not require it if it is a special usage decision related to a "Short-Term Inspection Completed" inspection lot.
We also, would prefer not to have multiple COA profiles to handle, this would cause too much extra data handling.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I If your Characteristic , whether it is short term or long term, is not marked as REQUIRED characteristic then there will be sure botheration for you to perform UD w\o performing the RR for them. It will prompt a message, which tends to be warning normally. But the characteristic is not REQUIRED and is OPTIONAL one then there will be no message , no botheration.
But one thing is very clear that if you want to print the Result of some MIC or characteristic,
    then
    1. it must be recorded for the result.
    2. it must be maintained in the COA profile.
At the other hand if you don't wish to print the result of some characteristic, whether it is short term or long term, don't keep it in the COA profile. System will not print it for you.
    Regards,
    Shyamal

  • Result recording to be done after UD with long term inspection

    Dear All
I have activated two MIC's for long term inspection. Inspection lot is created and UD is provided after Result recording. i have run QA12 and go to EDIT/RESET/INSPECTION COMPLETION.  status of UD changed to LTIN and then in Qe51 / qe51n i selected long term inspection but error message is coming '' NO CHARACTERISTICS WERE FOUND". Plz help , how to do result recording after UD.

Dear Even if the char is long terms & if you have forcefully completed the chars then even if char has LTIN status it will not allow you.
But check this in your sandbox and revert.
    1. In the MIC set the 'Optional Characteristic' and 'Long tem inspection ' in the control indiactors.
    2. Attach MIC in inspection Plan
    3. Do results recording and comlpete UD. all short term charactericts are closed.
    4. QA12Change UD with history for Inspection Lot ,
Menu-> Reset inspection completion -> Status changes to LTIN
    5. Goto QA02 --> you woudl see " do you wnat to compete Long term inspections" --> yes
    6. Then Long term inspection characterictic is open for results recording.
    7. Change and complete results --> Make UD
    Check and Revert.
    Cheers

  • Need help with long term Java problems

I've been having problems with Java on my computer for about a year now, and I'm hoping that someone here can help me out.
Java used to work fine on the computer when I first got it (a Dell laptop) and I hadn't installed anything myself. But then one day it stopped loading Java applets, and hasn't worked since. By this, I mean that I get the little colorful symbol in a box when I try to play Yahoo games, use the http://www.jigzone.com site, go to chat rooms, etc. Java menus on websites like http://www.hartattack.tv used to work still, but lately they've been giving me that symbol too.
I've tried downloading a newer version of Java, but nothing I do seems to work, and I don't know of anything I did to trigger it not working. I'm hoping there's a simple solution to this, and I'm just dumb.
    Thanks.

This might be way off, but it's something that's tripped me up in the past:
If you are using Sun's Java plugin, the first time you go to a site that has a particular Java applet, you may be asked to approve/reject a security request.
If you have clicked on any other windows while the request is first being loaded (which can take some time, because this is swing based), then the security dialog box does not pop to the top of the window stack, and doesn't add an entry into the task bar.
It appears that Java just doesn't work, but it's actually waiting for you to click "Yes". You can check this by hitting alt-tab and seeing if the Java coffee cup icon is one of the options.

  • Long-term  retention backup strategy for Oracle 10g

    Hello,
I need design a Archivelog, Level 0 and Level 1 long-term retention backup strategy for Oracle 10g, It must be based in Rman with tapes.
¿Somebody could tell me what it's the best option to configure long-term retention backups in Oracle?, "CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 1825 DAYS;" It's posibble ?
    Regards and thanks in advance

    Hello;
RECOVERY WINDOW is an integer so yes its possible. Does it make sense?
Later My bad, this is Oracle 11 only ( the gavinsoorma link ) . Getting harder and harder to think about 10. Don't think I would use RECOVERY WINDOW.
I would let the tape backup system handle the retention of your rman backups.
Using crosscheck and delete expired commands you can keep the catalog current with the available backups on tape.
    Oracle 10
    Keeping a Long-Term Backup: Example
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/rcmbackp.htm#i1006840
    http://web.njit.edu/info/oracle/DOC/backup.102/b14191/advmaint005.htm
    Oracle 11
If you want to keep 5 years worth of backups I might just use KEEP specific date using the UNTIL TIME clause :
keep until time 'sysdate+1825'More info :
RMAN KEEP FOREVER, KEEP UNTIL TIME and FORCE commands

  • Differential backups to tape

We have a number of medium size client sites that we support with an average of 150 users at each site.
Their file server data repository has now grown to just under 2T . We backup with SCDPM 2012 SP1 onto LTO5 1.5/3T standalone tape units.
DPM does not allow you to create a Protection Group with just the differential data from the last full backup onto tape.
We have the desired recovery point options when backing up disk to disk but not directly to tape – could you check if this can be configured somehow.
Backup windows now span well into business hours due to this and in some cases take more than 24hours to complete – The latter is due to backing up millions of files in our current email archive solution repository.
We obviously do not require a full daily backup of this data and the backup to disk options requires the client investing in addition hardware for each of it 20 sites which they see as not feasible.

    Hi,
If you are only performing Disk to Tape (D2T) backups, you do have the option to perform Full+Incremental short term backups.  The Full can be on a weekend day, and perform the incremental backup during the week.
If you are currently doing Disk to Disk to Tape (D2D2T) - then what you desire is an option to perform Full+Incremental long term backups which DPM does not support.

  • Long-term storage solution

This isn't "immediate", per se, and won't be "soon". I'm still at the lots-of-planning stage here with this, so you don't need to get into a race or anything to quickly help me before I make my decision just so you know.
Now, for my question: what would make a good, long-term, backup/archival system that isn't read only?
I want something fast (so not tapes), long-term (so not hard disks) and not fragile (so probably not CDs). What else do I have available?
I could use CDs if something akin to the CD changer one finds in more elaborate hi-fi systems and car stereos existed for data discs - so, therefore, a device that was equivalent to a clean-room environment and could hold like 500 discs. One that accepted standard 5.25" burners would be awesome, because I could switch it to bluray once prices went down and popularity and Linux support went up
I'm basically looking for something that lets me access data like 10 years after storing it, maybe make a couple of changes, etc. 10 years would be the absolute maximum I'd probably need though
Oh, and the medium I want to use needs to scale high. Very high. Into the order of more than a decent amount of TBs... like, say, 40 or 50. Of course that nice, round figure wouldn't pop up out of nowhere the day I have my plans in order, it'd grow - slowly - over time. So not only do I need something scalable, I need something that can scale slowly.
So kinda like a NAS or external HDD type of solution, except one that doesn't use failure-prone media like HDDs. Unless there's a kind of hard disk out there that doesn't fail very "easily" and lasts in an order of years?

I believe there is nothing that exists in the world, unless you pay huge money for Solid State Hard Drives. The only solution I see is using a bunch of rewritable double layer Blu-ray discs. I don't think there is any proper solution for what your looking for. Your looking for the perfect that doesn't exist.
I'm not sure how long SSDs will last and I don't think there is any reliable information out there, wether an SSD I plugin now will still work in ten years. Plus you would need one hell of a lot SSDs to store Terabytes of data. BlueRay is probably worse than DVD regarding reliability, until the manufacturers get more experience with them.
Am I the only one to see a pattern with dav7 opening threads looking for things which don't exist?

  • DPM 2012 R2 Long Term not backing up on correct day

    Howdy,
I have created a Protection group w/both short and long term protections. The short term backup is to disk, Monday through Thursday, and the long term backup up is on Fridays to tape. (See images below) Seems simple enough, however for some reason the long
term Friday shows up on Thursday the same time the the short term backups are run. I didn't know that was possibly, but more importantly why is this happening?
I've done as much research as I can do on the web, I'm hoping someone here can weigh in. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Janaka,
This is by design, all Long term tape backups are taken from the last successful disk based backup.  In your case, your last disk based backup is Thursday, and no data has changed since then, so DPM will mount Thursdays disk based recovery point and
copy it to tape and the time of the recovery point will be the same as Thursday since the version of the data is exactly the same.
