Snd-hda-intel, no headphone jack sense on hp dv6704nr
I recently installed archlinux on my hp dv6704nr laptop, and everything works except for suspend2disk and my headphone jack sense.
I've pretty much given up on suspend2disk (suspend2disk haet nvidia), but I'm still trying to get headphone jack sense to work as it is a rather important feature.
I've done a fair amount of googling on the topic, and I've tried the modprobe.conf edit (options snd-hda-intel model=asus) with many different entries for model) and that doesn't help at all. It's a Conexant ID 5051, if that means anything.
I found something that appears to be a fix, but it involves recompiling alsa, and when I did that, it left me with no soundcard detected (cat proc/asound/cards shows no soundcards).
If anyone knows of a workaround, that doesn't involve recompiling alsa, that'd be great. If not...any tips on compiling alsa?/
I recently had a similar problem with snd-hda-intel with my dell vostro I bought recently. The problem was the opposite of what you had, ie the laptop always thought that my headphones were in and wouldn't work through the speakers. I found a very ugly workaround in the form of unloading the driver, reloading it incorrectly, then reloading it again. To automate it, I have the following in my rc.local file
modprobe -r snd-hda-intel
echo "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" > /etc/modprobe.conf
modprobe snd-hda-intel
modprobe -r snd-hda-intel
echo "" > /etc/modprobe.conf
modprobe snd-hda-intel
WARNING: this'll overwrite (read: destroy) your modprobe.conf every time you boot. I'm ok with that since I normally don't have anything in there but if you do you should be aware. It's a really ugly workaround but it's the only thing I found that would get my sound card working.
Oh, one more thing. Since rc.local is read after all your other deamons, the alsa deamon won't set your levels right and all your channels will be muted when your system starts up. To do this manually, I added some amixer lines after all that modprobe hijinks to get everything sounding ok.

[CLOSED] snd-hda-Intel model mono/stereo and alsamixer issues
DROPPED: I just installed the Windows disc that came with the laptop and the official drivers, while they work better (a 6 channel wav plays fine in the speakers, linux only plays 2 of them) the most important issues like mono output only in the headphones jack is repeated. It seems the hardware problem. I don't know how I break it, but I did.
When I installed Arch linux about this laptop about two years ago everything was working OK. "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Right.wav" (and left) played in the corresponding speakers and headphones. "alsamixer" used to have two volume control bars per control, for left and right.
I can't pinpoint the moment but sometime in the last few months everything is playing as mono. Now alsamixer shows only one volume bar per control and "Master" can only to be (un)muted as mono. I can still mute the "Speaker" control individually using '<' and '>'. The "Headphone" volume control is ignored, neither volume nor mute work. And the strangest thing: when I mute the left Speaker it also mutes the headphones.
I never did any alsa configuration and so I'm assuming the model auto detection is broken. I tried a few model= options without luck. The problem is the laptop is brandless (pseudo-olivetti 750). Perhaps with some luck someone can help me identify which model should I use.
Physical Description:
The laptop has to on-board speakers and two jacks on the front, one labeled with a Microhone (slash) two things I cannot recognize and the other labeled SPDIF OUT (slash) Headphones. (I tried the only model described as 2-jack in the wiki guide without luck).

Thanks for any help, I tried most of the models listed as ALC883 (and some others) without luck, is there any other option that could cause this issues?

I assume the combination Vendor Id: 0x10ec0883 + Subsystem Id: 0x1584907e is what I should be looking for right? Google gave me three resuts from alsa project's DB: http://www.google.com/search?q=0x10ec08 … e&filter=0 resulting in two more models to try:
model=laptop (I'm almost certain I tried this already)
model=lenovo
I also didn't knew about alsa-info.sh so I downloaded, ran it and got this http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=9f7e7 … bf5c3ad9ea including:
!!DMI Information
Manufacturer: Standard
Product Name: L50IIX
L50IIX seems to be a board made by Uniwill and used by various companies which adds even more possible models:
model=uniwill
model=uniwill-m31
model=fujitsu
model=lifebook
model=fujitsu-pi2515
model=fujitsu-xa3530
It seems I have a lot of testing to do later, I will report back the results and hopefully will provide a solution for any lost soul who comes across this post in the future. Thank you. -
Quiet buzzing with snd-hda-intel
There's a quiet staticky sound using my onboard sound (snd-hda-intel). This does not occur on windows. Also when I use the digital out.
I've beeen avoiding this problem, but my subwoofer that had a digital input on it recently died and I replaced it with one that does not.
Any thoughts on how to get rid of this annoying background noise.When trying to get digital out to work, I turned on all the channels to max, so that's probably the problem:

No sound with snd-hda-intel (Realtek ALC260)
Hello,
I've been trying to make my sound work with no success, i'm basically in the same case as this topic : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=17347 but hints are references to now dead links.
I've played with modprobe and different settings like :
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=generic
with no success.
Here some more infos on my system :

(unfortunately i don't have any headphones to test if that part is working)
Thanks for your help.I removed the three lines and rebooted.
I'm not sure what i should test with pavucontrol but there is at least a VUmeter corresponding to a song i'm playing.
I did a speaker-test again still nothing.

Snd-hda-intel: sometimes it works, sometimes not
I searched the forums before and found several posts about snd-hda-intel.
I tried those "solutions" but nothing helped.
Sometimes sounds works. If not I change the volumes and then it works again.
At first there is a high noise in the background, really annoying. Then I change the front or headphone volume until the sound is clear.
As you can see, this is very strange.
When I ran dmesg I got the following output:
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:1b.0[A] -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ 22
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1b.0 to 64
hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode...
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:1b.0[A] -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ 22
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1b.0 to 64
hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode...
Does anyone know the meaning of this? Maybe this could help me solving my problem.It seems snd-hda-intel actually works with "hundreds" of different soundcards. Support for new soundcards are added all the time, but really new ones or rare ones may not work properly. If you feel like it, tell the Alsa project exactly what kind of soundcard/chipset you have problems with, and they'll probably fix it quite quickly, if you can give them the information they need.
There is also, of course, a small chance that you have a hardware problem. -
No sound: alsa snd-hda-intel macbook pro
I can't get sound to work on my macbook pro and I'd appreciate some advice. lspci shows the following soundcard:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
According to the alsa sound card matrix, this card uses the snd-hda-intel module. I've followed the alsa article at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ALSA. Here's what I'm seeing:
# lsmod|grep '^snd'

According to the wiki article, there should be controlC0 and pcmC0D0p devices under /dev/snd. I think the module isn't being installed correctly.
My system is a 2nd generation macbook pro. I've read that support for my card was recently added to alsa. I've had sound working under gentoo and debian by compiling snd-hda-intel statically into kernel 2.6.21. Can anyone give me advice on how to get this working?
BTW, I'm new to Arch, and I'm really impressed with it so far. Apart from sound, everything has worked well.I'll give kamikaze-sources a try. Thanks. What exactly is kamikaze-sources? Neither the AUR page or the homepage (http://kamikaze.waninkoko.es) really explains it.
Has anyone gotten this this sound card to work in Arch and what exactly did you have to do? Unless kamikaze-sources is really easy to install, I'll probably just compile a custom kernel. -
Snd-hda-intel doesn't work on 2.6.24
Hi,
I have troubles with the sound card on a fresh Arch install.
I have a Asus P5B-Plus Mainboard, which has an ADI 1988 Soundchip. Sound works great in other distributions like opensuse 10.3 (kernel 2.6.22), so perhaps it is an issue with the new 2.6.24 kernel?
I tried to configure the card with alsaconf, no luck. I also tried to pass the different models with "options snd-hda-intel model=SOMETHING_HERE" in /etc/modprobe.conf, it doesn't work.
The really strange thing is that it works perfectly in opensuse 10.3 which has a much older kernel.
Can anyone please help me?
Here are a few outputs and relevant part of logs:

Thanks!
And gone again...
I just dont understand this...
maybe you upgraded your kernel. what's your kernel version?
$`uname -a`
I found a guide on configuring sound card.
http://forum.ubuntu.org.cn/viewtopic.ph … 830b7d6e9d
I translated it into english.
Actually, the whole process is very simple.
0. cat /proc/asound/version to get your alsa version
1. run alsamixer to get the chip id on second line of output
2. open the alsa guide on /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt. if you don't have the kernel source, you know where to get it.
or just open http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Document … ration.txt.
Search you chip id in this file. then modify snd-hda-intel option in /etc/modprobe.conf according to the documentation.
3. visit http://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/main/i … -hda-intel and do exactly it tells.
4. reboot
That's all.

Module snd-hda-intel ingore its /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Hi,
I have trouble with modprobe. During boot there are loaded modules, I suppose with configs in /etc/modprobe.d. To get my sound card working I need to load module snd-hda-intel with this option:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
So I added the line to /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf. The option isn't loaded during boot, but if I rmmod snd-hda-intel and modprobe snd-hda-intel then is everything OK.
Thx for help.# aplay /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav

not have to make use of it, and it is useless if your /dev direc‐

is a brief explanation of how it is supposed to work.
When the "snd" module is loaded and the user tries to open a
sound device file with a minor number that indicates that card

up module loader configuration file /etc/modprobe.d/sound to look
like this:
alias snd‐card‐0 snd‐cs46xx
options snd‐cs46xx index=0
then snd‐cs46xx will be automagically loaded when it is needed to
handle the attempted open() of the sound device. The "index=0"
option ensures that when snd‐cs46xx is loaded the first card that
it registers is given index 0.
If you have an additional sound card of the same type then make
the file look like this:
alias snd‐card‐0 snd‐cs46xx
alias snd‐card‐1 snd‐cs46xx
options snd‐cs46xx index=0,1
If you have, instead, an additional sound card of a different
type then make the file look like this:
alias snd‐card‐0 snd‐cs46xx
options snd‐cs46xx index=0
alias snd‐card‐1 snd‐emu10k1
options snd‐emu10k1 index=1

Suppose you decide that you need to load a certain driver, snd‐

to set this up is to create additional files in /etc/modprobe.d/

[SOLVED]no snd-hda-intel module found
I have oss installed which works flawlessly and today tried to install alsa. Installed all the necessary packages according to the wiki, but alsa says no sound card detected. My card is a nvidia onboard souncard which uses snd-hda-intel module, but if I want to load it, it says:
sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel
FATAL: Module snd_hda_intel not found.
I have also followed this page http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. … -hda-intel but it says

Snd-hda-intel error loading soundcard
Hello,
I've a small problem on my current (and very exciting new) notebook loading the sound.
I'm experiencing problems with my soundcard. I installed alsa-utils and tried a /etc/rc.d/alsa start, getting the following output:
/usr/bin/alsactl: load_state:1327: No soundcards found...
Well, no card? Let's check.. lspci |grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
So yes, there it is ... but, what tells dmesg? (when loading snd-hda-intel)
ACPI PCI Interrupt 0000:00:1b.0(A) -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ21
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 000:00:1b.0 to 64

ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:1b.0 disabled
HDA Intel: probe of 0000:00:1b.0 failed with error -13
Well, i'm ... quite stuck with this. The source of troubles could be the module parameters (currently none specified) and so on...
Anyone got an advice for this?
I tried to add
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
but it did not help in any way.

Before making reports, I want to be sure that there is a real error - not just a glitch in just my system. If noone else has the problem, even the most detailed bug report would probably be futile.
if downgrading to .38.3 solves the issue then there's no doubt about the problem coming from patches from .38.4. Also, it is very possible that only a few machines would be affected by this so don't hesitate to report a bug even if you're the only one. Some users may not use .38.4 yet and will be hit by this bug later when they'll upgrade their distros.

Sound dies frequently, requires reloading of snd-hda-intel
I was wondering if anyone else was having issues with this.
My sound abruptly quits about every 30 seconds to ten minutes. I have to quit everything that's playing audio and reload the module.
I have tried switching to linux lts, but it's bad there too.
Any idea how to get a good driver (or if figure out if that's even the root cause)?
Thanks,

dmesg records no messages that I can see about any of the sound modules, except when I reload snd_hda_intel, when it leaves a series of these:

Granted, in this case I didn't wait for it to die on its own and just repeatedly reloaded the module (hence the timestamps one second apart). But that reproduces the same behavior that it does when it dies on its own.
I don't know why it declares a new device every time. Also there is not such path as /devices/ but I suspect that's just some internal thing that isn't supposed to be reflected in the filesystem.
Still flummoxed.
Thanks for the reply, sorry I didn't respond sooner. -
I have had problems with sound since I installed linux on this laptop (hp nx6325, ATI SB450 HDA Audio). I was always able to get it working to some point, but...
After turning on my laptop everything works fine, even the microphone, and the speakers mute when I plug in headphones. But after a while my mic stops working, as though it was blocked by something, or it didn't exist. And the speakers won't unmute when I plug out the headphones, or if they weren't plugged in before the speakers won't mute. weird...
I suspect it's a driver bug, and probably I can't do anything about it. I tried almost every possible solution i could find on the net, nothing worked (changing the modul=... etc.), and it seems nobody has exactly these issues.
I'm just curious if there is a workaround, so i won't have to restart my computer every time I want to use skype or unmute the speakers.My speakers don't mute when I plug headphones in. My solution is to turn the 'front' volume down to zero through alsamixer in the terminal. It doesn't trigger 'mute' but has the same effect. Don't know if this helps but might be worth a go?

Snd-hda-intel: cant control the volume
Hi there!
I got an ALC861 inside my laptop. Sound is working, but i got no Volume sliders. I added several options under /etc/modprobe.d/sound i tried all models listed under alc861, but no one gave me a working volumeslider. Anyone got an idea how to fix this?
cyaCould you run the lspci command again, but this time as follows:
lspci -nn | grep Audio
In my case this gives the following:
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller [8086:27d8] (rev 02)
The [8086:27d8] are the vendor id and device id, respectively.
This will allow us to know the exact hardware in your machine. It will also allow us to grep the alsa sources to see if your specific hardware is supported.
(As a side note: before a recent BIOS update, my sound chip had the following vendor/product ids: [17aa, 2066]. Now the ids are those I listed above. So, a BIOS update can cause headaches for users and driver authors)
