SNMP Discovery of Windows machine
I'm trying to install and configure the Netbackup management pack, which ultimately requires that you discover the windows machine that runs the Netbackup NOM Console as an snmp discovered device. (the netbackup pack is essentially a trap converter).
My problem is that I cannot seem to discover the windows server using the snmp discovery wizard. It just times out and says that the device was not discovered. I have discovered other SNMP devices, but this is the first time I've tried to discover a windows server via snmp. Here's what I've tried and/or verified:
- SQL Broker is enabled
- SNMP service and snmp trap service are set to automatic start and are running
- SNMP community strings are all "public" with read/create on both the NOM machine and the management server.
- "Accept traps from all hosts" is enabled.
- I've tried both snmp v1 and v2 discovery in the wizard
- I have verified that there is NO port blocking between the agent and MS. (using the portqry utility).
- Ping responses are successful to/from both nodes and name resolution also works fine.
I've found several forum postings about snmp discovery and everything seems to be set correctly.
Any other bugs or known issues about discovering windows server via snmp? anyone every successfully deploy the netbackup management pack?

Couple things - I think since I posted this thread that Symantec has released a newer version of NOM and the Netbackup management pack that had a couple fixes. The SNMP blocking issue was caused by the NOM Server service and I believe there was a configuration section in the NOM console that allows you to change NOM's snmp port so that the Windows SNMP service can use port 161.
Even after making this change, I found that the Netbackup discovery views were not getting populated. I found that the designated management server that the nom server was focused on was generating the following WMI error and I found that I had to add the default agent action account into the local administrators group of the NOM server. This allowed the WMI queries to complete and allowed the discovery data to populate. Other than this, we just defined the alerts in NOM that we wanted to be notified on and chose SNMP as the delivery mechanism - then the alerts showed up in SCOM. Please note that the nom/scom integration components do no maintain state information - it's really just a basic SNMP trap forwarder. So you will have to manually close any alerts that come from NOM into scom.

Making windows machine names resolvable in OS X

On my home network I've two Windows machines and my macbook pro named freestyle, hackster and bluestreak respectively. I've Windows filesharing enabled on my mac. So when I type \\bluestreak on any of the Windows machines, I'm able to reach the file shares on my mac... so 'bluestreak' successfully resolves to my mac's IP address. However, I'm unable to reach my Windows machines from my mac using their names. To reach the fileshares on the Windows machines from my mac, I've to use their IP addresses. Is there a way to make OS X automatically resolve those Windows machine names to their IP addresses? .. I know I could edit my hosts file but then I'd need to assign static IP address to my Windows machines and I'd still need to use IP addresses if there are any temporary guest machines in the network. So what I really wanna do is just how it happens on windows .. name resolution of computer names to their IP addresses.

PuneetReally? OS X fully supports NETBIOS/WINS as a discovery protocol.
Do you have WINS configured in the network pane?
System Preferences / Network / Select the network interface you want to configure and select Advanced on the right hand side. Select the WINS tab.
Enter the NETBIOS NAME, select a workgroup from the drop down menu, and enter the IP address of the WINS server.

Older versions let windows machine access airtunes, 7.1 does not.on a PC
I have set the prefs. for Itunes 7.1 to send to my airport express properly (airtunes)and it does not work,I have tried many alternate settings, it doesn't even show up at the bottom of the library page. Uninstalled 7.1 and reinstalled itunes 4.5, Works with Itunes 4.5 on PC and on my 2 Macs' Itunes. This is a lap top with xp pro. Not a firewall issue either. Itunes 7.1 may work on a Mac but seems to have a lot of bugs for a windows machine. I expect better from Apple and this skcus (backwards). What really ticks me is the music store does no longer work with Itunes 4.5 and says to upgrade to 7.1

iTunes for Windows basically uses a stripped-down internal version of BonJour for Airtunes and music sharing. so it's looking like a problem hitting some folks with the standalone BonJour and iTunes 7.1.0.59 on Windows.
if you don't use BonJour for printer discovery and whatnot a heck of a lot, we can run through how to disable the BonJour Service from loading on startup, if you like. (that's one of the workarounds we can use until the conflict gets properly sorted out.) -
I moved to Mac from a Windows machine where I had downloaded all of my CDs into iTunes. When I got my Mac it only put my purchased items into my library. So I merged my windows library and it created a whole new user account with that on it. I now have two libraries and can only sync music with one account or I lose all of my imported CDs. Help! How do I merge them.
The easiest way is to get both computers on your home network and copy the files over the network. It's easier than you think

That thread mentions Target Disk Mode, which won't help moving from a PC to a Mac. But you can use file sharing to copy the files.

How do I use an external hard drive that has been used on a windows machine on my mac....
I have recently just bought a new mac and want to edit files that are currently saved on my external hard drive that I used on my windows machine.
Is there any way to be able to do this or will I have to transfer all files across to my mac and then re-format the external?

Can't find printer shared on Windows machine
I don't know how to connect my MacBook Pro to a printer shared by a Windows machine on my network. I have the Windows path to the printer but I don't know how to get Leopard to see the printer. (I tried the Windows tab in the Print and Fax control panel.) Can someone please tell me what is going on?
Okay, some things you need to confirm for me.
What is the workgroup name of the computer sharing the printer?
What is the ip address and subnet mask of the computer sharing the printer?
What is your Mac's ip address and subnet mask?
If your Mac and the PC have the same subnet (usually the first three numbers of the ip address) and the workgroup name is the same, then you should be able to see the share. If not, there is a manual method of connecting to a Windows share.
What you need to do is customise the add printer browser. After selecting to add a printer, control-click next to the More Printers icon to see a menu. Choose Customize Toolbar. Move the Advanced icon to the toolbar. Now click the Advanced icon to see a new menu. Change the top menu to Windows Printing. In the field after smb://, you can enter the computer name or ip address of the sharing computer, followed by a / then the printer share name. For example,
smb://192.168.40.12/Canon
Note that sometimes you have to also use account information in the queue name, especially when the guest account is disabled. In these cases, the queue name would be entered as follows;
smb://username:password@computer_name/printer_sharename
Once you enter the queue name you can then select the printer model. For some models of printers, you cannot use the driver supplied by the vendor. So you have to look at using CUPS based drivers such as those provided by Gutenprint.

am trying to import Firefox bookmarks from a Windows machine into Firefox on an Apple. I do not want to use Safari. How do I do this?
I have, on my HP laptop, running XP Pro, using Firefox 4.0, went under bookmarks to show all bookmarks. A window opens up that says library. I then go to import and back up, and I choose export HTML. I then move this file over to my new Mac Pro. On my Mac Pro I also have Firefox 4.0. I go up under bookmarks, show all bookmarks, import HTML. It lets me browse and I find the file on the desktop, I select it then nothing happens. I am not interested in using Safari. I would like to continue using Firefox. However, as an experiment, I followed the same process except on my Apple computer I opened up Safari and tried to import in the Firefox bookmarks. It came up with an error saying the file could not be accessed. I then thought perhaps the file got corrupted, so I went back to my Windows Firefox and re-exported the bookmarks again. Same problem. So, am I creating the bookmarks incorrectly on my Windows machine?

KentProbably your Mac cannot understand the Windows html format, please try the following to see if it helps:
In your PC, export the bookmarks in html as you did in your post. After you have saved it, change the name of the file to “bookmarks.html” and save it again.
In your Mac, import the saved file as you posted. -

We have written an application which contains a pkg that will write all the logs related to application in the form of a text file. We are using utl file operation to achieve the same. As of now I have 2 Setups. We have two IBM servers with similar configuration, one in which we have installed Windows server 2003 and the other with HP-UX. We have installed 11g version of DB In these two machines. The problem is with the performance of the application. The DB in Unix server takes less time for writing the log. For eg: it takes 10 secs to write 5MB log. But the same takes more than an hour from a Windows machine. I want to know whether the performance of the DB depends on the OS which we are operating from or else it depends on the parameters set for the DB? Kindly help me.

Kindly help me.I did some testing a while back between windows and linux and the difference on properly configured windows and linux database servers (same hardware same db version) wasn't worth talking about (< 10% often less than 5%).
That said it's not clear what exactly you mean. If you mean that writing a 5mb file on a windows machine takes an hour, then yep something is badly wrong - most likely with the hardware. I suspect though that what you mean is that you do a bunch of database work and that takes an hour on one machine and 10s on the other. This is likely to be a problem amenable to response time analysis, that is to say talking your workload and tracing it with timing information to see where it is spending the time. As you say it is your package, you will also be able to (and should) instrument your own code to see where the time is spent.
given the huge difference, you may well also find that statspack/awr will spit out your offending processes quite well as well.

Windows machines can't join domain after 10.5.4 upgrade
Howdy folks,
I have a ticket open with Apple on this but am posting here in hopes that someone might have an idea for me.
I upgraded our Mac OS X Server 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 on Sunday, and this morning several users reported that their PCs running Windows XP SP2 were unable to login to the Windows domain hosted on this machine. It's the primary domain controller for the Windows users.
One thing to note is that I had to reinstall the server completely because the 10.5.4 patcher crashed, creating all kinds of mayhem. I did a fresh install of OS X Server 10.5 and immediately applied the 10.5.4 combo updater to it. I had to restore the Open Directory from an archival copy, and the SMB was created fresh. Not sure why but the SMB services weren't preserved by the Server settings export command in Server Admin.
I thought unbinding the PC from the Windows domain and then rebinding it with a new name would help, but I've been completely unable to add older computers to the domain, even after removing the old computer records first.
I've got a reproducible failure mode for this problem on a Windows XP virtual machine running on VMware Fusion on my Mac. Here's the method I've been using to create the failure:
1. Change Windows XP System name to something new that doesn't already have a computer record on the Mac OS X Server and reboot.
2. After the reboot, run "NewSID" program on Windows to globally change my Windows machine's SID to a new, random value, and reboot again.
3. Attempt to use the Network ID wizard in the Windows Control Panel to re-add the machine to the domain under a new name so there's no conflict with any old computer records floating around in Open Directory. After it prompts me to enter the username, password and domain name for a user who's authorized to add machines to the domain, I get a dialog box that displays this error:
"Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred:
An internal error occurred."
Not too informative.
Here are the error messages I see in /var/log/samba/log.smbd (searching for the new computer name in the search field):

At that point it's impossible to join the computer to the domain no matter what. The most puzzling thing is that SOME of our users were able to login without any problems whatever. The ones that were either physically off or somewhere else when the 10.5.4 upgrade was applied are the only PCs that seem to be having problems.
Any help at all is appreciated. I suspect this is some kind of a SID conflict because the SMB server had to be recreated from scratch, but have no idea how to fix the client, the server, or both to make the computer account creation process work.The problem is fixed.
The issue boils down to an argument between the Open Directory server on bigmac (the OS X Server machine) and the SMB server on bigmac. The crucial information I needed to solve this problem was located here: http://www.radiotope.com/node/61
The Open Directory database had to be restored from a backup following this weekend's problematic upgrade, and it had a different value for the SID for the Windows domain than the one used by the SMB server software itself. Even stranger was that the Open Directory database actually had the wrong domain name! The It was listed as "BIGMAC" in Open Directory, even though it was set to the correct Windows domain name in the SMB server.
The solution was to demote the SMB server from a Primary Domain Controller to a Standalone Machine, and then repromote it. Although I changed no values in the settings, and did not modify the plist containing the SID in the Open Directory via the Inspector in Workgroup Admin, after the SMB PDC was repromoted, the SIDs and the domain names in Open Directory and the SMB config agreed with each othe. Now new machines can join the domain and users can login just as they did before. No client-side modifications are necessary.
Hope this is helpful to someone else. It was quite the hair-pulling experience for a while there.

I can get iTunes to run on my windows machine as an administrator, but not as a user. All my calendar entries and contacts are in my user account, and I want to be able to start iTunes in that account. What settings do I need to change?

Many thanks for your reply. I have been doing that, but running it as an administrator means that my calendar info is not synced. I get a blank calendar on my iPad. I need to be able to set it up so that users can run it in their own accounts. There must be a way to do this?

Hi, How do I export HDR photos made on a macpro with photoshop cs5 onto a flashdrive so they can be imported correctly into a windows machine that doesn't have photoshop installed on it? Already exported to a HP flashdrive but they do not even show up on a windows machine. Need that capabillity since this is for commercial printing. My wife's mac laptop only shows 3/4 of the picture the rest is grayed out. Adobe support claims it is a Apple problem. Love the finger pointing and hold me blameless atitude on their part. Told them creating a picture should be like gas that can be used in anybody's car, just not their Adobe equipped ferrari. Do I need to convert the file struture so it can be read by the window machine? How would I do that ? Any comments appreciated. Doug
I certainly wouldn't expect to read native PS CS5 files with all features intact and supported on a machine that doesn't have CS5 installed. Try saving the files as flattened (no layers) TIFFs before moving them to the flash drive and trying to open them on the Windoze box.

I live in Mountain View and use Google WiFi which is provided by Google for the City of Mountain View. For the past few months, they have been having a BIG problem with the corruption of downloads. Even teensy tiny ones. Perhaps you've heard about it since you're also in Mountain View. They have not responded to repeated posts from the forum... I have an iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I haven't been able to update my software. I go to Lane Medical Library at Stanford to use the Windows machines there. I load whatever standalone software that I can onto a jump drive and install it at home. Unfortunately, some sites (like Apple and maybe even Mozilla!) recognize the computer you're on and only allow you to download software compatible with the machine that you are actually sitting at. This means that I can't reinstall Safari because I can't get a copy of it. And it looks like I might not be able to install Firefox 17.0 either. At least, that's what I'm trying to find out. "We've made some educated guesses about your current browser and operating system." See what I mean? So when I go to the library, will I be able to download a copy of Firefox 17.0 for the Mac and install it on my computer at home? Thanks!

I am very new to Apple community and just purchased Keynote. I have a Knote presentation and want to use clips from movies i.e. "A Beautiful Mind" to help teach about psychiatric issues. Can this be done? I just read about CINEMATIZE 2, but I am not

How can I transfer an ibook I bought on my Mac to my iPad?
My iPad is listed in iTunes but when I go to add it to a library all I see is iDisk, which requires a MobileMe account. Is there another way? Thanks for your help!
