SNMP on 802.11ac AirPort Extreme. Gone or just not available in latests AirPort Utility?
Hello everyone. I just purchased three 802.11ac AirPort Extremes to replace three previous generation AE's that were becomming problematic. I just discovered that the SNMP feature is missing? Is the functionality still there, but possibly enabled by means other than AirPort Utility? Or has Apple once again decided on our behalf and took away a much needed feature? I will be soreley dissapointed if Apple has ommited SNMP from the new AE.

Apple removed the SNMP function almost two years ago, so you would think that if Apple were going to do something, they would have done it by now.
But, you never know what might happen.
In case you were wondering how to locate a list of DHCP connected network clients on the TC, that is another item that "disappeared". If important to you, you might want to ask about that as well.

AirPort Extreme Base Station is not Available in AirPort Admin Utility
I don't see my APEX Base Station in the list in AirPort Admin Util. I can configure by opening by IP. I have no software firewall. I have plugged in directly to base station, and have reflash with 5.7 firmware. I am using 4.2 of AirPort Admin. I've Tried everything I can find in forums. Anyone else have issues?
I'm using Mac OS 10.4.4I have tried resetting it. It doesn't always work. Sometimes the base station is listed, and sometimes it is not. The base station is functioning though. I can access the newtork, It just doesn't show up in Admin Util.
I also have an AP Epress connected to AP Extreme via WDS. From the wired side, they either both show up or both do not, which is expected. When they don't show up on the Admin list, the Express also doesn't show up in iTunes from the wired side. Wireless clients don't seem to exhibit this problem. -
I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is blinking. When I go to utilities and try to find the airport express it does not show up.

Airport Extreme (n-version) as base for extending with Airport Express(old)
I have a new Airport Extreme that I need to extend - meaning need an ethernet connection on the other side of the room, but I dont want to drag a wire across. I have an extra, and old, Express but I have spent the past couple of hours trying to get it to share/extend the network. Everything seems to configure properly (and I have tried all sorts of options - even setting up a WDS which doesnt seem to work), but when I plug in to the ethernet jack - and then this to my computer - it does not see anything. Help?
You'll need to check a few settings on the AirPort Extreme because you'll need the information to configure the AirPort Express correctly.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup for the AirPort Extreme
Click the Wireless tab located just below the row of icons
Jot down the exact name of your wireless network and the security setting that you have in place now. I assume that you already know your wireless network password.
Close AirPort Utility
"Hard reset" the AirPort Express (AX) by holding in the reset button on the AX until you see the amber light begin to flash more quickly, keep holding the reset button when this occurs for another 4-5 seconds and then release
Connect the AX to one of the LAN <-> ports with the ethernet cable
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup for the AX. You'll be prompted to Switch networks so that you can configure the AX
Click the Base Station tab (located under the row of icons) to name your AX, establish a device password and adjust Time Zone settings
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme wireless network
Radio Mode = 802.11 b/g
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password = Same password as your AirPort Extreme network
Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon and check these main settings
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode0
Update to save settings. Close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored. The AX will restart in 30-40 seconds. Then restart your entire network by powering everything down. Wait a moment and start the modem first, then the AirPort Extreme, then the AirPort Express and your computers and devices.
If you decide to use the powerline adapter to allow the AX to be located wherever you want, the AX is already configured to so so.

Airport Extreme 2nd Gen - can not retrieve or assign an IP address
I had two 2nd gen Airport Extreme base stations. One connects to the internet, the other bridges the network to my office where I have wired devices connected. The office base station was no longer allowing me to connect to my USB drive for time machine backups, but all of the wired devices were routing to the internet properly.
I purchased a new base station (5th gen), bringing my total to three extreme stations and two express base stations (one express for an old wired network printer, the other for streaming music).
The old main base station is moved into the office, and the new base station (5th gen) becomes the "main" internet access point. I reset both devices and they install without a hiccup. Ditto the new express stations - they connect without having to reset them. Everything works as it did before the upgrade.
I take the old office base station (the one that would not allow me to backup via time machine) and do a factory reset. It reboots, the light flashes yellow (not surprising). I hook an old macbook (10.6.8) up to the old base station (and turned off the wifi) using a wired ethernet cable the ethernet port is assigned an IP address (10.0.1.2) via DHCP. My other macbook pro (10.8.5) running the latest AirPort Utility sees the old base station using wifi (under other wifi network). I select the old base station it automatically connects it to my new base station stating:
"This Airport Extreme will now be set up to extend <my new 5th gen AirPort Extreme base station>"
I change the default name and click next.
Now when the old office base station boots it will not connect to the network - it still flashes yellow. It will not assign itself an IP address, the macbook plugged into the ethernet port (using dhcp) shows (under network settings):
"Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet."
(the 169.... number)
Now the funky part. I manually set the wired ethernet's IP4 configuration (IP, subnet, router and dns server) on the old Macbook running snow leapord (10.6.8) - remember the wifi is turned off - and bingo - I am connected to the internet. All the while my old AirPort Exreme continues to blink yellow. If I manually assign an IP address to the AirPort Exreme's light turns green.
Clearly the old device is working. The ethernet port works, the wifi works - routing traffic from the wired ethernet through my home network and out to the internet. My AirPort utility on all my macs can see the base station, and can configure it (via wifi). I have even tried (via wifi) downgrading the firmware to 7.6.3 and then to 7.6.0 and the back up to 7.6.4. The only thing it will not do is give retrieve an IP address, or assign an IP address to wired devices.
Any ideas?I attempted to see/access (via the Disk Utility on my iMac) two drives already connected to my AirPort Extreme, but could not.
These drives are shared "network" drives, which Disk Utility cannot access. Disk Utility will only be able to access a drive if it is connected directly to a Mac.
If you need to format the drive(s), partition them, etc., you must do so with the drive connected directly to the Mac, then move them to the USB powered hub location at the AirPort Extreme.
These drives are available through the Finder and are used for Time Machine
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive connected to the AirPort Extreme, but some users seem to be able to make this work.
1) Can I see/access USB drives (properly fomatted and visible/accessible in the Finder window) attached to my AirPort Extreme (2nd gen-firmware version 7.6.2)via a powered USB hub?
Probably. Some users find that one powered hub will work for them while another might not. To "see" the drives, you must first click on the AirPort Extreme icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder. Then, if the drives are formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), each drive will appear as a folder. Double click the folder name to mount the drive on the desktop.
2) Can I use my iMac (running Lion 10.7.4) to create a concatenated disk set with USB drives (of varying size) attached to my AirPort Extreme via a powered USB hub?
The drives will all appear as separate drives, which must be accessed separately. If you were thinking of trying to start Time Machine backups on one drive and have them continue automatically on another drive when the first drive is full, that will not work. -
After a recent iTunes update attempt iTunes no longer functions and the airport extreme base station is not accessable on our computer. We still have wifi but cannot access the base station software.
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the response. I tried that approach this evening and it didn't work for me. (Technically it worked for me, when I was hardwired into my base station, but would not work for me wirelessly, which is my main issue.)
Again, using the approach you recommended works only if I have my ethernet cable attached to the LAN port so my computer is communicating directly to the base station through the hard wire. I am able to scan for my base station and make setting adjustments normally this way too.
As soon as I disconnect from the LAN port and try to go wireless is where I run into problems. The Base Station's wireless network I created is available to choose in the top right corner of the monitor with all of the other available wireless devices/networks -- but the network I created does not have access to the internet. I am also unable to configure my Base Station wirelessly. When my Airport Utility tries to scan for the Base Station and Network, it cannot find any Apple Wireless Device. It's like the Wireless Network in my base station is not sending out a signal.
Is there a way to resolve this issue? -
How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!
Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
Click Time Machine
Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format. -

Does the new Airport Extreme allow "guest network" setup across all my Airports on my network? I have 1 Airport as a router and 6 others as WAP's (bridged)
I assume that all of your WAPs are hard wired on the network.
If.....all of your WAPs are simultaneous dual band Apple AirPort devices like an AirPort Extreme or new AirPort Express.....and.....you have firmware version 7.6.3 (now 7.6.4) installed on all the AirPorts.....and.....you use AirPort Utility 6.3.1 to configure the devices......in theory.....it should work.
I don't have 6 WAPs, but I do have 3 and the network works perfectly allowing extension of both the "main" and "guest" network. -

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I assume that Pixus has provided you with a modem that provided an Ethernet connection to your 3rd Gen AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) ... correct? If so, then anytime you change networking hardware, it is a good idea to completely recycle power on all of the networking components.
Please try the following:
Power-down the Pixus modem, AEBSn, and computer(s); leave them powered off for at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it sufficient time to initialize.
Power-up the AEBSn; wait at least 5-10 minutes or until its status light is a solid green. (Note: It may continue to flash amber. This is ok, as it may just require some additional configuration settings, like wireless security to attend to.)
Power-up the computer(s).
Network clients connected to the AEBSn, either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the Pixus modem. Please post back your results. -
I want to connect a Windows PC to an existing Airport Extreme router via ethernet connection. Is there any utility required or can I just plug into the router? The router is already set up and working with existing iMacs.
thanks for the info. I found apple utilty software on this windows 7 PC but I guess it is not required for sharing internet on exisiting apple extreme. Am I correct that I can remove this apple software?

Airport 802.11ac with FW 7.7.1 not working with iPhone
I bought the new Airport 802.11ac. First I tried to connect with my iPhone 4s. This was only working with no security feature activated on the Airport. From the moment I switch on WPA or WPA2 on the airport my mobile phone is not able to connect. Does somebody know how to solve this issue?

Has my Airport Extreme gone bad?
We had bad storms on Saturday that knocked out a lot of people's power. Mine was not but the next afternoon,and since then, I haven't been able to get online. The ISP (Mediacom) said everything is fine with my modem and that speeds are up to snuff. I checked the AEBS in airport utility and got couple errors. They were DNS needed and conflict with my beginning and ending IP addresses. I resolved these by putting in the OpenDNS IPs and putting some DHCP IPs in but still won't connect. The WiFi meter on macbook pro shows zero bars but when I click on the part to select which network to join it shows my network with full strength yet won't join.
Then I tried plugging Ethernet from my modem (Motorola surfboard SB4200) directly into my macbook pro and I keep getting a 'self-assigned IP address and won't connect to internet' message.
I've tried just about everything (powered everything on and off, different cords) but can't get 'et up and running.
Is my AEBS failing? Should I reset to factory default?

This would suggest that the modem is not functioning correctly. If it were, you should have an internet connection assuming that the computer is working correctly.
If you verify that you can get an internet connection when your computer is connected directly to the modem....but then find that you cannot when you hook the AirPort Extreme up directly to the modem, then that would suggest a problem with the AirPort Extreme.
It won't make much sense to try other things until you can verify that your internet service is working correctly. I don't mean to place blame, but in my experience, the ISP always says their stuff is working perfectly. That may be, but you need to verify.
Be sure you reset the modem when you make any change in the device that is connected directly to the modem. I assume that you are doing this already since this is common practice with a cable modem. -
Guest Network not working in latest Airport Extreme
Just bought the latest Airport Extreme (802.11ac), and want to enable the Guest Network.
- Installed latest firmware
- Set Airport in Bridge Mode
- Enabled Wireless Network
- Enabled Guest Network
There is no connecting to Guest Network (iphone) and if possible (macbook) there is no internet.
With a previous version of Time Capsule, the Guest Network in the same setting worked like a charm.
Anybody seen this before or is the Airport Extreme working different than a Time Capsule?According to the theory what you are saying about the A1355 is not possible.. ie there is no guest in bridge.. I have tested it and can assure you it did NOT work.. it fooled me into thinking it should and I spent many hours working on it.. our forum expert here.. Bob Timmons set me straight.
Now I am always a believer in voodoo and gremlins and maybe the tooth fairy when it comes to wireless.. it is about 80% of the above and 20% science.. so please do the test again and see if it is possible.. but I can assure you.. apple have set guest network to off in bridge.
There are ways around it.. complicated methods. ie if you extend wireless to your TC.. from another apple router where the router is on, then guest can be used. You can also use a managed switch to set vlans for the guest.

I had a Time Capsule running in an AV Cabinet and it made too much noise as it backed up and ruined soft/quiet music passages (and created far too much warmth as well). So, I visited the local Apple store and the guy I met worked through a few solutions with me. I decided on an Airport Extreme for the audio cabinet, and would move the Time Capsule to another room where it would not create noise interference.
So, I have the Airport up and running perfectly well. I changed my wireless network name and password.
I cannot get the Airport Express and Time Capsule to show up on my network. They both just blink that brown/orange color on the front. When I go to the Airport Utility, it does not pick up the Time Capsule or Airport Express. I have tried unplugging and plugging back in and scanning for devices, but dont know what else to do. Are they still looking for my old network? Is there a way to reset them??

The AEBS lists (among others) 802.11 a/n-b/g compatible, 802.11 a-b/g compatible, or 802.11 n (5 GHz)-b/g compatible. The TC offers 802.11.n (b/g compatible), 802.11n only (2.4 GHz), and 802.11n only (5 GHz), among others...
I had already followed the instructions in the link you supplied, except that the wireless options don't quite match...
I am currently trying 802.11n (5GHz)-b/g compatible on the AEBS and 802.11 (5GHz) on the TC, which gives me a rate of 270 on my n devices and 54 on my g devices, according to the Airport Utility.
This might be the best I can do, without buying a new TC. Thanks for any advice you can give...
