SNMP on CAPWAP via WCS or Cisco Prime

We are interested in adding SNMP settings to all of our CAPWAP wireless access points.  There is no way to do this via any of our controllers or WCS.  We are soon to upgrade to Cisco Prime.
I am able to log in via telnet to a 3502 and manually enter SNMP commands, however I can't save the running config to NVRAM.  I can save the running config to flash, but can't change the config register to look at flash for the config on startup.
Is there a way to configure and save SNMP parameters on CAPWAP wireless access points?

The referenced document states that SNMP management is available.  However, The SNMP settings on a controller (5508 as an example) allows for traps on the controller itself and not on the CAPWAPs.
We have an inventory management system that we want to import our CAPWAPs.  There are over 2500 so manually imputing the CAPWAPs can be a tedious task.  The management system uses SNMP to discover said info.  All of the controllers are already cataloged.

Is possible to migrate a WCS database to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.x?

You were able to go from wcs to NCS, but not to PI. Your better off just exporting the maps and importing to a new install of PI 2.1.

  • Upgrading WCS 7 to Cisco Prime (CPI) 2

    Hello,
I have read a few article and posts about upgrading WCS 7 to CPI 1.2 via NCS. However now with Prime 2.0 I was hopping I didn't have to use NCS.
I can't find any migration guides or documents about migrating to 2.0 instead of 1.x.
Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Direct migration from WCS 7.x to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.0 is NOT possible.
in my work I had this problem.
the only solution was to first install the NCS 1.1, after the patch 1.1.1.24 and then migrate to 2.0
Backup WCS data , upgrade to NCS 1.1  and restore de data...
install patch 1.1.1.24 , only then you can do the upgrade to version 2
    CISCO:
"We strongly recommend upgrading your WCS to 7.0.230.0 (for data integrity) or higher before attempting to migrate to NCS.
Users will first need to do an intermediary migration to NCS 1.1.1.24, and then do an inline upgrade (or migration) to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.0"

  • Difference between cisco prime infrastructure and cisco WCS

Can you explain me difference between cisco prime infrastructure and cisco WCS.. I'm little bit confuse...
    Thanks..

    Hi Hasan,
In terms of features...You can say PI is more advanced version of WCS and NCS. All the stuff possible in WCS/NCS can be done on PI as well.
But from the architecture perspective , there are differences. If I remember correctly , WCS is based on 32 bit OS while NCS and PI based on 64 bit OS. For the same reason you cannot do inline upgrade from WCS to PI via any path and will have to change the platform/Hardware itself before moving to PI. However , inline upgrade from NCS to PI is possible if we follow the correct path.

  • Issue with backup NCS via NFS (Cisco Prime NCS 1.2.0)

    Hello,
Does someone have issue with backup NCS via externally mounted location (NFS)?
I have Cisco Prime NCS 1.2.0 and tried backup it to external resources, but I have issue with my free space:
    NCS/admin# backup ncs repository backup_nfs
% Creating backup with timestamped filename: ncs-130131-0534.tar.gpg
INFO : Cannot configure the backup directory size settings as the free space available is less than the current database size.
You do not have enough disk space available in your repository to complete this backup.
    DB size is 25 GB
    Available size is 12 GB
Please refer to the command reference guide for NCS and look at the /backup-staging-url/ command reference to setup the backup repository on an externally mounted location
Stage 5 of 7: Building backup file ...
      -- complete.
Stage 6 of 7: Encrypting backup file ...
      -- complete.
Stage 7 of 7: Transferring backup file ...
      -- complete.
I have tried to add additional space and use command backup-staging-url (my configuration: backup-staging-url nfs://server2008:/nfs), but it didn't help me.
NFS share works perfect. I have checked it via NFS repository:
    repository backup_nfs
      url nfs://server2008:/nfs
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    NCS/admin# show repository backup_nfs
    NCS-130130-1135.tar.gpg
    NCS-130130-1137.tar.gpg
    NCS-130130-1157.tar.gpg
    NCS-130130-1158.tar.gpg
    test-130130-1210.tar.gz
Everytime when I try create backup I receive error message "You do not have enough disk space available in your repository to complete this backup".
Does someone know how can I backup NCS system?
    Thank you

How much space is availabe on that NFS mount point? It looks like to me from the error message that there is only 12 GB....
The backup-staging-url is just for a space used to stage the backup before it is written-----

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.4 SNMP Traps are not converted into Alarms

    Hi everybody,
I just configured SNMP Traps on a Cisco Catalyst 3750-x to send to our Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.4 Appliance.
Now I forced the Switch to send some traps (Power off a Power Supply, Interface errdisable). The only events I see in Alarms & Events on PI is the same information message everytime:
Configuration management event has been recorded in ccmHistoryEventTable.
I think the forced traps should be converted into alarms? Why can't I see them?
    Thanks,
    Marc

Ok, I started debugging as you said. I get the following output:
    Mar 13 09:28:13.711: SNMP: V2 Trap, reqid 11689, errstat 0, erridx 0
     sysUpTime.0 = 198609846
     snmpTrapOID.0 = ciscoSyslogMIB.2.0.1
     clogHistoryEntry.2.1688 = PM
     clogHistoryEntry.3.1688 = 5
     clogHistoryEntry.4.1688 = ERR_RECOVER
clogHistoryEntry.5.1688 = Attempting to recover from bpduguard err-disable state on Gi1/0/13
     clogHistoryEntry.6.1688 = 198609844
Mar 13 09:28:13.737: SNMP: Queuing packet to xx.xx.xx.xx
Looks like the Switch is sending SNMP Traps from the ciscoSyslogMIB. Is this why PI can't show the Traps and convert it into a alarm?
After this test I configured logging (syslog) to the PI. Now the errors are showed but still not converted into alarms. I just want to be notified by email when such errors occurs.
    Thanks,
    Marc

  • WCS and LMS to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 Upgrade

    Hello,
Our customer is currently having WCS for 500 devices and LMS 3.2 for 1500 devices. We are planning to upgrade to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3.
I want to check is the upgrade procedure that we have planned is ok or we have missed something.
Phase 1: WCS to CPI 1.3 upgrade
    1. Check that WCS is at 7.0.230.0  version
    2. Export WCS database
    3. Install NCS 1.1.1.24 software
    4. Contact cisco to obtain trial license for NCS software (L-WCS-NCS1-M-K9 license).
    5. Migrate WCS license and import it in NCS software
    6. Migrate WCS data to NCS software using ncs migrate command
    7. Patch NCS software
    8. Inline upgrade to CPI 1.3 software
    9. Install proper licenses on CPI 1.3 (WCS and LMS device count)
My concern in this first phase is should I use NCS large image since our Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 software should manage 2000 devices at the end.
Or is it better not to perform inline upgrade and insted go with exporting data from NCS and then importing them to CPI 1.3 that is going to be installed separately?
Phase 2: LMS 3.2 to CPI upgrade
    1. Export LMS 3.2 database
    2. Install LMS 4.2 software
    3. Install license to LMS 4.2
    4. Restore data from LMS 3.2 to LMS 4.2
    5. Direct upgrade from LMS 4.2 to 4.2.2
    6. Export the device list with credentials from LMS 4.2.2  and import it as a Bulk Import in CPI 1.3
At the end we will have CPI 1.3 and LMS 4.2.2 software running.
Is it possible to directly upgrade from LMS 4.2 to LMS 4.2.4 and then import data to CPI 1.3 or we need to go with 4.2.2 version?
    Regards,
    Jelena

Are this errors going to affect our LMS 4.2 operations?
Then we have upgraded to LMS 4.2.2 and exported data and credentiales for PI import.
On PI 1.3 we have installed WCS 500 devices upgrade license and LMS 1500 upgrade license and now we are having 2000 devices lifecycle license. We have successfully restored WCS data in PI and we have imported LMS devices as bulk import. What is strange is that we have this message in prime regarding licensing:
On LMS 3.2 our customer had saved unlimited number of configuration versioning. After upgrading to LMS 4.2 we can only see last 3 configurations regardless of unlimided number of configurations in previous LMS, so my question is where can we find older configurations in LMS 4.2?
We are planning to turn unlimited versioning on CPI 1.3 now, so our customer will again have feature that they need. Do you have some experiance regarding disk space when all device configurations are stored forever?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.1: SNMP Connectivity Failed

    Hi,
I have discharged all my Cisco devices within Cisco Prime and after a few days and when everything worked correctly one of the switches is displayed with the SNMP error Connectivity Failed, nothing has been changed.
I deleted and i have returned to create the object but it continues to be the same, I've also tried to create another SNMP community still receiving the same error.
This is the configuration of snmp in the switch WS-C3850-48P with version 03.02.02.SE
    snmp-server community "community" RW
    snmp-server location "location"
    snmp-server contact "contact"
    snmp-server host 10.180.5.22 version 2c "community"
    Best regards.

    Hi ,
check if you are getting these errors in "show log" again:
%SNMP-3-INPUT_QFULL_ERR: Packet dropped due to input queue full
If yes , then either a lot of SNMP polling happening on the device
    or
CPU utilization is going high sometime , being SNMP as a least priority process , you will see this issue. check for "show proc cpu history"
It is a device side issue definitely.
I would suggest to apply a Access-list on the SNMP community string allowing only the
valid NMS to poll the device
    Thanks-
    Afroz

  • Cisco Prime SNMP Traps Best Pratice

The Cisco Prime documentation recommends configuring switches to send SNMP traps. However it does not give any more details.
I was wondering what sorts of SNMP traps people in the community are using with Cisco Prime 2.1. I'm looking for some sort of best practice or for an idea of what traps would be the most useful to configure on the switches, to send to Prime.

    Hi ,
Snmp traps need to be configured only on device end , there is no config need to be done on PI.
you can enable all the traps that you want.  for e.g
    snmp-server enable traps syslog
snmp-server enable traps ipsec start stop
    snmp-server enable traps memory-threshold
    snmp-server enable traps interface-threshold
    snmp-server enable traps connection-limit-reached
snmp-server enable traps cpu threshold rising

  • Cisco Prime SNMP trap logs

    Hi
In Cisco Prime Infrastructure, where can we find the snmp trap logs and can we do the snmp polling through webconsole, please suggest how we can troubleshoot if the device is not reachable, do we need to login through ssh and check or is there any other options available.
Can we find out the configuration details of the specific device, how we can do it.
    Please advice

    Hi abhishek ,
First of al you have to check on your devices SNMP is enable or not , its all depending on SNMP configuration , if possible check the running config , and paste the running configration , to solve your issue

    Hi,
A  direct upgrade from a WCS release to Prime Infrastructure 1.2 is not  supported. You must first upgrade to an NCS 1.1 release, and then  upgrade to Prime Infrastructure 1.2.
    Please check the links below:

i know i can suppress the alarms, but can anyone tell me why this is generated?  how is it when Cisco PCA can manage the device, i get authentication issue on SNMP v2c ?
    thanks in advance

    Hi Phil,
Even I am facing this issue.
The server is in managed state in Device Work Center. But still observing the Alarm " SNMP  entity has received a protocol message that is not properly authenticated.".
Also it takes 15 to 20 minutes for an alarm to get cleared.
    Thanks,

  • Difference between cisco prime NCS and cisco WCS

    hello
i have a question. I am just started with testing cisco prime ncs
i have worked with cisco WCS
now i was wondering wat the difference is between these two
    can someone please explain it.
    thanks allot

They are both very similiar in functionality.  The major difference is that NCS offers a basic switch management front end and allows you to see your wired clients just as you would your wireless.  Other then that, the I've found the latest version of NCS to run quite a bit smoother and faster then my WCS install of several years, slicker graphics.  I would recommend using NCS in Chrome for the best view.

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.0 import image via WAN link failed.

Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.0 behind NAT that can copy image on device to Cisco Prime infra but can not deploy from Cisco Prime Infra import image from device. How to solve problem, please ?

Have you downloaded and applied the latest Device Pack updates?
PI enhanced ASA support after the initial 2.0 release and the Device Packs incorporate that change.
The README file for Device Packs explains how to install them. (A bug currently does not allow the direct download in PI so you need to follow the method for installation from local storage after you manually download. Here is a link to the download location.
