SNMP query

Guys,
I have a query regarding SNMP
Can it be used to trigger some operation in the SNMP Agent side?
let me explain the scenario..
say Machine 'A' is the client here and Machine 'B' is the SNMP manager. Something happens in 'A' and it sends a 'trap' to 'B'. 'B' in turn triggers something in 'A' through the SNMP Agent in 'A' which in turn will rectify the fault occured in 'A'.
Can we do this using SNMP?
I only know what is there and some basic things about SNMP.
Guys, please enlighten me on this
Thankx in advance
Manesh

Hi there Manesh -
It sounds like machine 'A' (the managed device/app) gets into some condition which would trigger an SNMP trap. This trap is sent to machine 'B' (the SNMP manager). Now at this point, the administrator can do soemthing about this by setting a variable, but as far as I know, there's no direct way of getting the manager (machine 'B') to reply to the managed device automatically.
Please let me know if this answers your questions.

  • SNMP query for multicast group count

    I want to get the total number of multicast groups on a switch. Is there an oid that will give me the info (ie. the number that's given by "show ip igmp snooping groups count")? If there is no oid, is there a way query the  groups (show ip igmp snooping groups)? I'm thinking with the 2nd option I might be able to count the number of entries returned by an snmpwalk or something and turn that into a number.
    Right now i'm logging into the switch with a script and running the command but that might be a problem with all those logins (only every 5 minutes though) so I'd like to do this via SNMP if possible.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Works just fine!!!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Well, at the very least, you can create a formula
    column in your break group using a combination of the
    same where clause as your original query and the
    break values for the group so that you are getting
    the correct records. If you have it in the break
    group, then it will execute for each record in that
    group.
    Hope that helps,
    Toby

  • SNMP, Query dot1dStpPortState on Catalyst 2960-S

    Hi Community,
    I would like to be able to query the dot1dStpPortState obect on the Catalyst 2960-S on our LAN . Im running firmware
    c2960s-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE2.bin and according to the Cisco SNMP Object Navigator the object is supported (via the BRIDGE-MIB).
    However when i query using snmpwalk from my workstation :
    snmpwalk -v 2c -c bic-zua-ro 10.u.y.x 1.3.6.1.2.1.17.2.15.1.3
    I recieve and error .
    SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.17.2.15.1.3 = No Such Instance currently exists at this OID
    For the sake of comparison, querying our 4700 :
    snmpwalk -v 2c -c bic-zua-ro 10.u.y.x 1.3.6.1.2.1.17.2.15.1.3
    returns (as expected, cropped)

    Is there some special configuration i need to do on our 2960's. The only snmp related settings i can see in the running config is snmp-server community. In this case :
    snmp-server community bic-zua-ro RO
    Thanks in advance for any comments/ assistance.

    Hi Vinod,
    Wow, thanks for your prompt reply. Output from filtered running config pasted below

    Interestingly when i walk the entire dot1dBridge (1.3.6.1.2.1.17) i recieve lots of data from both dot1dBase (1) and dot1dTp (4) but nothing from dot1dStp (2)
    I tried portAdditionalOperStatus and did not recieve any response but got lots of data from its patent  portEntry (1)

  • SNMP querying of Meraki devices

    We have several Cisco Meraki devices are part of our network, and the ON100's querying of SNMP for these devices does not seem to work. Is there a way to have the ON100 query a Meraki MS24 as a generic switch, for example? Will support for Meraki's products be built into the OnPlus portal, since Cisco now owns Meraki?

    One of our clients is a school system with around 180 Meraki's.  The Meraki's appear to be web-i-fied so that the only way you can connect to their SNMP mib's is through Meraki's web portal.  i.e. you have to connect your SNMP scanner, management software to a location in the Meraki cloud.
    The last time I looked at this, which was a bit before Cisco purchased Meraki, there were instructions in the Meraki web portal for the devices.  If I remember correctly the SNMP may have been tunnelled over SSL and used non-default port numbers, which I don't believe OnPlus can connect to.
    In either case, I got the distinct impression that the idea was you connect SNMP to the Meraki portal for your user account, and Meraki connected to its on-site access points in a non-disclosed, proprietary manner.

  • SNMP Query for Byspass Status (AIP5)

    I'd like to monitor the state of Bypass mode for the ASA-SSC-AIP-5 and would like to know if I can check this with SNMP and if so, which OID.
    I started messing with SNMP and the SSC5 a while back and started a thread about snmpwalk causing it to crash.  After that, I never really picked the project back up.
    I've been known to miss the obvious every now and then, but I was dissapointed to see that there wasn't an (obvious) way for the device to alert you when it automatically goes into bypass mode.  This should be a feature request.

    IPS provides SNMP traps for different interface conditions like link going down or up, traffic bypass started, etc. Below is one such example
    Received SNMPv2c Trap: Community: "public"
    From: 10.89.149.204 mib_2.1.3.0 = 38429472
    snmpModules.1.1.4.1.0 = ciscoMgmt.138.2.0.1
    ciscoMgmt.138.1.3.3.1.3 = 3                      <====    index can be mapped to index obtained from snmpwalk
    ciscoMgmt.138.1.3.3.1.4 = 5                      <====    Traffic bypass started
    ciscoMgmt.138.1.3.3.1.5 = 4
    ciscoMgmt.138.1.3.3.1.6 = 38429472
    All you need to do is enable sending traps from the sensor.
    qssp-8085(config)# service notification
    qssp-8085(config-not)# enable-set-get true
    qssp-8085(config-not)# enable-notification true
    qssp-8085(config-not)# read-only-community public
    qssp-8085(config-not)# read-write-community private
    qssp-8085(config-not)# trap-destinations x.x.x.x           <===== trap destination
    qssp-8085(config-not-tra)# exit
    qssp-8085(config-not)# exit
    You can configure separate community name under trap-destination. If not provided then the read-write-community will be used to send with the trap.
    Hope this helps

  • SNMP Query for active tunnels inaccurate

    Hi,
    I use the following OID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.171.1.3.1.1.0 to query my 3005 concentrator for the number of active tunnels. The number of tunnels averages around 4-8 at a time, but about 40% of the time, the returned value is 85. This is skewing my results.
    This may coincide with enabling WebVPN, but even the statistics on the web pages of the 3005 never even come close to this value.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • Snmp query for TenGigE data counters C4510R+E?

    Dear community. With the risk of sounding like an idiot I turn to you:
    I'm having slight challenges reading the data counters for a ten gigabit Ethernet interfaces on our C4510R+E w/sup8 with this IOS:
    bootflash:/cat4500es8-universalk9.SPA.03.03.00.XO.151-1.XO.bin
    running snmpwalk on ifindex reveals all indices properly, i.e:
    IF-MIB::ifName.1 = STRING: Fa1
    IF-MIB::ifName.2 = STRING: Gi1/1
    IF-MIB::ifName.3 = STRING: Gi1/2
    IF-MIB::ifName.4 = STRING: Gi1/3
    …etc…
    IF-MIB::ifName.259 = STRING: VLAN-601
    IF-MIB::ifName.260 = STRING: VLAN-876
    IF-MIB::ifName.261 = STRING: Te5/1--Uncontrolled
    IF-MIB::ifName.262 = STRING: Te5/1--Controlled
    ...etc...
    but when trying to see the octet counts from for example ifindex 261 or 262 I get no results at all:
    ...etc...
    IF-MIB::ifHCInOctets.230 = Counter64: 0
    IF-MIB::ifHCInOctets.231 = Counter64: 0
    NOTE: no ifIndex 261 or 262
    IF-MIB::ifHCInOctets.293 = Counter64: 0
    IF-MIB::ifHCInOctets.294 = Counter64: 0
    ...etc...
    All other physical interfaces show their values just fine - just not the TenGigE's.
    so, dear community: is this a problem, feature or something that can be configured to work differently? or is it just me :-) googling something like "snmp tengigabitethernet counters" brings up mostly problems with the max data rate but in my case the snmp values do not seem to exist at all.
    Thanks in advance,
    JukkaK

    It may be helpful to see the entire output/snmpwalk for ifTable and ifXTable for this device to see if all the data is missing for these indexes/TE interfaces.
    Many older IOS has some issues where the details for a perticular linecards and its associated interfaces were missing from Switch.
    Many times it worked after reseat of Linecard or Reboot of the entire device. As these are not the easy and not the first choice for many, lets check the outputs first.
    Also from the switch, please share output for device for show snmp mib ifmib ifindex command.

  • Snmp query on a dhcp server (low routers or L3 switches)

    Hello,
    is possible to monitor dhcp binding or free addresses using snmp? I found the following MIB: CISCO-IETF-DHCP-SERVER-MIB, but this MIB is supported only on the Cisco 7300, 7200 series.:-( When I tried snmpwalk on the Catalyst3560, but the CISCO-IETF-DHCP-SERVER-MIBoids is not supported:-( So the question is following: Is possible to monitor DHCP leases using SNMP on the low end Cisco platforms (800,1700, 1800, 26xx, 28xx..., Cat3560, Cat3560E, Cat3750, ...)? Thank you. Roman

    You can do this with EEM and the EXPRESSION-MIB.  Take a look at the script at
    http://forums.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/EEM;jsessionid=BC017F546ECE38762F78BCF6270D6A77.SJ5A?page=eem&fn=script&scriptId=2283 .  I just used this script today to do exactly what you want.  I created objects to be able to poll my number of outstanding leases and my overall pool size.

  • Cisco C220 SNMP query for overall status

    Hello all,
    I would like to know how to check the "overall state" of the UCS C220 M3 rackmount server.
    I have searched and walked through a lot of OID, but I can't find which one is the "Overall Server Status" for example ?
    The goal is to poll the main indicator under "Server Status" with nagios and rise an alert when something is wrong.
    Anyone can help me ?
    Thanks in advance

    Bump !
    No idea ?
    I'm sure a lot of people monitors their C220 series servers... How do you do ?
    Any help appreciated, thanks :)

  • How to calculate value in SNMP performance rule?

    Hi there,
    My environment is running SCOM 2007 R2. Now I have a request to develop MP to monitor a network device which support SNMP. I successfully discovered the device. Then I created a performance rule using System.Performance.SNMPPerformanceProvider as data
    source to collect the bandwidth usage. However the value returned from SNMP query is bit per second. But we want it to display as MB per second.
    My rule is created as following
    1. a data source, with ID as "DS", is created using System.Performance.SNMPPerformanceProvider to query performance data via SNMP
    2. the data is write into DW
    I just need to divide the value returned from "DS" before write it into DW. Can any components under "Condition Detection" can be used to manipulate the data?
    Or any other tricks?
    Thanks!

    I reviewed the thread, and I believe there are 2 questions here:
     - the questions regarding the units in bit per second
    out of the box, SCOM will be unable to modify the data. In other words, you get the value, then that value is shown in the console. There may be ways to achieve what you are looking for, but out of the box I dont see that this is doable.
     - the questions regarding the output of the script
    I am by no means a scripting person, but the error seems to be an issue with the script itself ("The requested SNMP operation identified an unknown variable" maybe a problem with the variable definition?). if you believe that is unrelated, the
    only troubleshooting step that I can think of as a quick test is to run this with psexec as localsystem (as SCOM runs the workflows) and see if you are getting the same result. On an elevated command prompt, type PSEXEC -i -s -d CMD then that would open a
    new command prompt window as localsystem.

  • LMS 4.0.1 and User tracking with SNMP v3

    Hi! (again )
    I've another problem with our new LMS 4.0.1.
    We manage our devices with SNMP v3 but the user tracking don't want to work flawlessly.
    I've attached an example from our SNMP configuration. Basicly it's the same in our devices.
    1st the problem was that no matter what I did the User tracking didn't want to find any host. I left it and worked on something else. After 2 weeks suddenly appeard couple of thousand end host.
    As earlier (LMS 2.6 or 3.2 with snmp v2) it is the same that LMS cannot differentiate normal end host and IP Phones although we have several thousand from both. But this is only one problem.
    The other is that there are switches with the same IOS and SNMP configuration and from one I get the UT data and from another one I didn't get anything. Only from some 4506 (aprox. 12-15) and 6506 (2) works and we have 20+ 4506 and 10+ 6506. Not to mention the other switches (couple of houndred 2960 and 3750).
    I'll be grateful if somebody could advice what to do.
    Thanks
    Gabor

    Understanding Debugger Utility
    The utility displays a report on the reasons why User Tracking failed to discover end hosts on specific ports.
    In many cases, User Tracking may not perform as expected. This may be  because of problems in other LMS applications. For instance LMS Server  may have devices that are not discovered or inadequate VLAN discovery in  Topology Services.
    You can run the utility to troubleshoot problems, or provide the report  and log generated by the utility when you contact TAC for help in  diagnosing problems.
    The debugger utility uses the data collected by LMS Server and reports the reasons for the missing ports in User Tracking.
    This tool also has an SNMP component embedded which runs an SNMP query  for the table as a part of verification for SNMP failure. For example,  SNMP bugs in Catalyst operating system because of which User Tracking  may fail to discover devices.
    This generates an Action Report that you can use to analyze the data.
    The Debugger Utility:
    1. Checks the switch ports in a sequential order.
    2. Reports violation of basic rules for each of the missing ports such as link ports and trunk ports.
    3. Checks for SNMP retrieval of data, if the ports pass the validity check.
    4. Generates an Action Report suggesting possible remedial actions to retrieve the valid missing ports.
    Using Debugger Utility
    The Debugger Utility is available at $NMSROOT/campus/bin/ (where $NMSROOT is the directory where you have installed CiscoWorks).
    To run the Debugger Utility, run the command:
    utdebug -switch switch-ip -port port1[,port2 ...] [-export filename]
    where,
    switch is the switch to which the end hosts are connected.
    ports are the ports on the switch which have missing end hosts User Tracking.
    -export filename specifies  that the debug messages be stored in the file specified. If this option  is not used, the messages are displayed on the console.
    For example,
    utdebug -switch 10.29.6.12 -port 5/12
    utdebug -switch 10.29.100.10 -port Fa0/10
    utdebug -switch 10.29.6.14 -port Gi6
    Pretty sure you will find this and perhaps more in the build in help of LMS
    Cheers,
    Michel

  • Snmp-server community over VRF

    I'm in the process of rolling out snmp-server community for LMS for all our devices. A few devices is VRF enabled, hence I need to ping the LMS server through a VRF and not the global routing table. To my knowledge the ' snmp-server host 11.22.33.44 vrf VRF XXXX' command only sends traps/notifications to DFM , is there a similar comand for the 'snmp-server community xxxx RO 1' ?
    I can ping the device from the LMS server but the snmp-server community access-list  does not show any hits for the LMS IP and hence the device is not registered in LMS.
    Any ideas?

    So manually-initiated communications appear to be working in both directions. That's good.
    Since you're not seeing hits on your acl at the device, I'd next check to see the traffic leaving your LMS server. You can run a Wireshark capture there (or use the built-in packet tracer), filtering on your device's destination IP. I'd initiate a comms check from Device Center in LMS (or snmpwalk from the cli) to manually trigger an SNMP query.
    If you don't see any SNMP queries leaving, LMS is the culprit (I'd check the DCR entry for the device in question). If you do see the traffic leaving then there is a network / device issue.

  • WLSE 2.11, snmp and wds errors

    Hello,
    I try to use WLSE to manage our AP1131,1231 with different IOS version.. Some AP are in WDS domain with a WLSM, others in WDS with an AP configured to be wds master, and other are standalone without wds configured.

    WLSE says that some device were not reachable by SNMP but snmp community is configured with a good access-list. Moreover, when I test snmp reachability from WLSE (admin>appliance>connectivity tools>SNMP Query Tool) it works fine. So I do not understand why I have this fault.
    I do not understand the fault "Inconsistent state found for query "interface.radio.basic"", someone could help me perhaps ?

    Thanks.
    To answer your question, the disk FW upgrade doesn't erase/destroy the data. However the disk FW upgrade can ONLY be done while there is NO IO activity, hence you need to stop the IO before proceeding with such upgrade.
    As for the FW, it seems that your drive has the FW 0892 which is a newer FW than what your CAM version has (0791). The FW 0891 was supported with CAM 6.0 + patches. Starting from CAM 6.1.0_15 we introduced the FW 0B92.
    The recommendation is to upgrade CAM to 6.4.1, then you will get an alarm because your drive will have 0892 whereas CAM brings 0B92, however you can plan a maintenance window at your convenience in order to upgrade the drive FW.
