SNMP Traps Other Than Switches

Hello,
I am running SCOM 2012 R2 and I have had SNMP traps enabled for a long time now. I have only been monitoring my switches, but now I want to monitor other devices such as UPS's and printers. I followed the article "How the heck do I
get it working?" and I have no issues receiving traps from my switches. But my printer, a Lexmark E260DN sends traps to my P.C. and I am using a free SNMP trap receiver. It sends the traps to my SCOM server too, using the same app. But
SCOM does not display them. My UPS, an APC Smart-UPS 5000, is only discovered using ICMP. I tried discovering it using SNMPV1 and SNMPv3. Both versions result in the same way. I get "No Response SNMP". It is definately
not a firewall issue. I have 35 other devices that are sending me traps. 34 of them are switches and the other one is the printer I just discovered. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
You may check Network Discovery Progress Events found in the Monitoring space
under “Operations Manager\Network Discovery\Network Discovery Progress Events”. Network Tracing may help also.
In addition, please refer to the article below to troubleshoot network device discovery issues:

• 3750 SNMP Traps

Hi,
recently i have upgarded the IOS on cisco 3750, IOS ver.12.1(14r)EA1a, earlier i was using the older one which has come along with the switch, now after upgrading the IOS, i am not getting any SNMP traps from the switch. i have a network monitoring software installed, which receivez the SNMP traps from the switches, now only from 3750 it is not able to receive the traps,other switches 3550 & 2950 where able to receive, even in these switches i have upgraded the IOS, but this works fine. what could be the reason?

Hello Anand,
in order to see which MIBs are loaded on your current IOS, you can also check with the command:
show subsys | include mib
to verify that you are polling data from existing MIBs.
Regards,
GP

• CAM Event Log: SNMP trap is received from switch [ ip address ] which is NOT in our database.

We keep getting thousands of entries in the CAM event log like this:
SNMP trap is received from switch [<ip address>] which is NOT in our database.
apparently, these aren't NAC'd switches. Why does the CAM see these and how can they be eliminated from the Event Log?
Thanks,

Matt,
Do you switches have the CAM as a host where they are sending traps? Check the running-config of the servers and see if you spot the CAM IP address as one of the snmp-servers.
HTH,
Faisal

<key>com.apple.TestApp.benign</key>

user rule: successful authentication as a user in the specified group(5) allows the associated right.
The shared property specifies whether a credential generated on success is shared with other apps (i.e., those in the same "session"). This property defaults to false if not specified.
The timeout property specifies the maximum age of a (cached/shared) credential accepted for this rule.
The allow-root property specifies whether a right should be allowed automatically if the requesting process is running with uid == 0. This defaults to false if not specified.

• Re-routing of SNMP traps from port 162 to port greater than 1024

Hello,
I have to re-route SNMP traps received at port 162 to some other port greater that 1024 (say 2041). There is an application which sends SNMP traps to port 162 and our application running on Windows listens for SNMP traps on port 2041, so we want
to route/forward the traps internally from port 162 to 2041.
I have been looking at the rules defined in 'Windows Firewall with advanced security' but not able to succeed. I noticed that there is a predefined rule for SNMP traps but it does not give me an option to forward the trap to another port. I tried
creating a new rule but that also does not give me an option to change the port.
Please help.

Hi,
According to Technet Library:
SNMP uses the default UDP port 161 for general SNMP messages and UDP port 162 for SNMP trap messages. If these ports are being used by another protocol or service, you can change the settings by modifying the local Services file on the agent. The Services
file is located in \ % SystemRoot %\System32\Drivers\Etc
There is no file name extension. You can use any text - based editor to modify the file. The management system must also be configured to listen and send on the new ports.
Caution:
If you have previously configured IP security to encrypt SNMP messages on the default ports, you must also update the IP security policy with the new port settings. Otherwise, communication can be erroneously blocked or SNMP communications might not be secured.
You can access to the link below for this article:

Writing in pages in Afrikaans. Spellcheck keep on correcting to dutch. Switched off spell check and also looked in System preferences - keyboard. this stops the "Auto-correct" but does not help me with Afrikaans or other language spell check. Where do I get languages other than what Apple offer and where is the dictionary, Library, spelling files.

You are basically limited to what Apple deigns to offer.
Try LibreOffice [free] which has a huge selection of languages.

• What settings on my iPad and iPhone will help prevent motion sickness, other than "Reduce Motion" switched on, please?

Please advise whether there are any settings other than "Reduce Motion" under iOS 7 that could help prevent motion sickness on an iPad 3 and iPhone 4S. I've set "Reduce Motion" on but it hasn't helped, I still get motion sickness within a minute or two.
Thank you.

Unfortunately right now that is the only setting you can control.
Apple is aware and may address this in future updates.
You can leave Apple your feedback here.

• CSCud17778 - memory leak in middle buffers due to snmp traps

The bug details list these as the conditions required to cause the symptom. They don't specify whether these three conditions are an AND or an OR, but I'm assuming that all three must be satisfied:
Conditions:
1) more than one snmp-server hosts are configured
2) "snmp-server enable traps snmp authentication linkdown linkup coldstart warmstart" command is configured
3) some host sending broadcast SNMP traps
What I'm confused about is #3 -- how would that be germane? If some "host" sends SNMP traps to an IP broadcast address, the switch should ignore them because it will not be listening on UDP port 162. If instead of SNMP traps, the host were broadcasting SNMP GETs, that would make it as far as the community string check, which would require buffer storage for the switch SNMP process. And assuming that check failed, the generation of an authentication_failed trap to multiple trap receivers would require more buffers.
Can anyone (especially from the TAC) clarify this?
TIA,
- Marty

Hi Marty,
Yes, all 3 are required (AND conditions).
Also note for #2, it is really the "authentication" portion of the command.
In this case, I believe the IOS devices is actually looking / listening to these received traps. The receipt of this SNMP trap is definately a required condition to trigger this bug.
Sincerely,
David.

• Throttle SNMP traps

What is the best way to throttle snmp traps? I have an HP NNM (Network Node Manger) server that is currently receiving traps from a number of network devices. Sometimes traps get sent from these devices at a higher rate than the NNM server can handle. When this happens the NNM server is basically so overwhelmed it gets hung.
I have a Cisco 1811 ISR that is acting as my remote tunnel device. The monitored devices (switches, firewalls, routers, etc.) are on the local LAN behind the ISR and all monitoring traffic is sent to the NNM server through the IPSec tunnel.
Is there a way to either batch process snmp traps or throttle/cap the rate that the messages get sent? I would prefer to do this somehow on the ISR as it will keep the number of configurations I have to do way down.
Thanks,
-mike

Luckily you have NNM. As long as you're running NNM 6.4 or later (up to 7.53 that I can testify for), you can configure throttling there. Instead of rehashing it, I point to the post by Prashant over at HP ITRC:
http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=109447627+1289854149785+28353475&threadId=1011198
Note that I don't personally adopt Step 3 in Prashant's post, of blocking individual offending IP addrs specifically in ovtrapd.conf. Without that step, I simply configure ovtrapd.lrf to give whichever IP addr that crosses the "-B -r ##" threshold a temporary "time out". Once that offender's trap rate drops below the configured threshold, NNM unblocks it, until the next violation.
This is not a perfect "throttle", because all traps (interesting ones and noises) from the offending IP are tuned out during the blockade.

• CiscoWorks LMS: not receveing certain SNMP traps

CiscoWorks LMS 4.0.1 (I know it's old and unsupported).
Problem: not receiving certain SNMP traps.
For example: I receive trap like "STP new root" but not like "port put to err-disabled" or my custom traps (produced by EEM scripts).
I've investigated my situation and found out that switch sends traps and they reach* LMS but somehow LMS ignores them (there's no trace of them in GUI). I've read that some traps just pass through LMS but my traps are very important and I need to know about them.
* I did Wireshark capture on LMS machine.
I'd like to know how to debug receiving of SNMP traps in LMS:
which specific debugs need to be enabled,
which specific log files need to be examined.

LMS uses DFM to process certain traps.
All traps it deems unimportant are dropped.
If you want to use the LMS GUI you can have you device send a SYSLOG message rather than a trap.
use logging source command to make the management interface send the message.
Then there is a GUI that allows you to launch an action on a message
Cheers,
Michel

• How can I add vocal effects other than the 9 Voice options? (I can't shift pitch)

Hello!
I am making the switch from PC and am just trying to lower the pitch of a vocal track by at least an octave; I just got a MBP last week and am running GB 10.0.2. I can't find any info on similar problems that is helpful; most solutions I've come across show that when the track is selected, there should be a pitch shift bar with a sliding button, but I do not have that. I read a lot of people saying something about the track being purple or not, but I'm not sure if that's relative to the version I have or if that has anything to do with what's happening. When I select the track, in the little area toward the lower left when "Track" is selected, (what is that space called?) where the pitch shift option is for other people, I only have a sliding bar for Pitch Correction, and a checkbox for Limit to Key and Enable Flex. When "Region" is selected, it just shows the name of the region and there are no options. Another question I have is how to change the pitch of midi sounds? When the keyboard is open on the screen I have tried moving the little octave shifter, but it assigns the sounds that are on the keyboard at different locations if I move it, so it changes the sound completely. A couple of them shift one octave up or down, but there are no actual controls..
I'm mostly just dabbling with EDM/trap/Hiphop tracks at the moment, but am confused about whether or not there are other vocal effects and controls other than the preset Voice options in the instrument area (Bright vocal, Classic vocal, compressed vocal, Edge vocal, etc.)? I'm not going to be using GB forever, but are there not any other options like for current rap/trap production (phaser, balance, EQ, auto tune, choppers, actual voice altering effects, etc.) [preferably without buying extra things]? And not only vocals, but editing effects for all sounds.. If so, how do I get to them? And if not I know I should at least be able to lower or raise the pitch of a vocal recording... There are some pretty legit electronic instruments that are exactly the kind of sound I'm going for so I was surprised to not see an equally simple to access vocal effects board or something. Any additional tips for a n00b electronic music producer would also be greatly appreciated! Thank you for any help!

In GarageBand 10 you can no longer change a track with an audio file to a "purple" audio recording, as it has been possible in GarageBand '11.
Even, if you can make the transpose slider visible by enlarging the the track editor panel, the slider will be disabled.
What you can do however, is either add an AuPItch filter from the audioUnit panel or to convert your audio file to loop and to admit from the Loop Browser.
In the new GarageBand you add the AuPitch filter from the Smart Controls.
Enlarge the SmartControl panel by dragging the dividing line upwards, until you see the Audio Units brick, then add an Apple Audio Unit and set it to AuPitch.
Or create a loop from the audio file. Select the region in the track and use the command "File: Add region to Loop library". You need to trim the filet an exact number of measures.
Set the current key and tempo, name the loop, and save the loop. Make sure, that one-shot loop is not enabled.
Now add it from the loop browser to a new track and delete your old track. The search field in the Loop browser will help you to find the loop quickly.
You will be able to transpose the sample like any regular loop.

• Prime Infrastructure 2.1 - Fan-Failure SNMP-Trap Issue

Hello,
I am facing the following Prime Infrastructure (v2.1) issue:
- A Fan-Failure SNMP-Trap from a Cisco 3650 switch doesn't appear on Prime, but a Link-Failure from the same switch does.
- The both events appears on Prime with Syslog.
- The command "snmp-server enable traps envmon fan shutdown supply temperature status" is set up.
- The switch is in "Managed" state in PI, I have checked the ACL at the "snmp-server community" command, it is okay.
- I have set up an SNMP-Trace for the switch on PI, but only "SNMP Null was returned for class com.cisco.server.managedobjects.bridge.Fan3KStats attribute fanIndex" arrived. Please find the log below.

It seems like PI and the switch doesn't understand each other concerning the fan...
Thanks for any ideas, comments and feedbacks,
Csaba

I have the very same problem.
The switch has a power supply error (one of the two is down). There is the syslog message in PI about it, but no event has created, so nor alarm is there as well.
When I check the status of the switch in the Device Work Center, and choose the Environment in Device Details I can see that PI has not realized the power supply error.
However when I click on the Sync for this very device the power supply status is updated, but still no event or alarm.
This is the case with the FANs as well.

• Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.4 SNMP Traps are not converted into Alarms

Hi everybody,
I just configured SNMP Traps on a Cisco Catalyst 3750-x to send to our Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.4 Appliance.
Now I forced the Switch to send some traps (Power off a Power Supply, Interface errdisable). The only events I see in Alarms & Events on PI is the same information message everytime:
Configuration management event has been recorded in ccmHistoryEventTable.
I think the forced traps should be converted into alarms? Why can't I see them?
Thanks,
Marc

Ok, I started debugging as you said. I get the following output:
Mar 13 09:28:13.711: SNMP: V2 Trap, reqid 11689, errstat 0, erridx 0
sysUpTime.0 = 198609846
snmpTrapOID.0 = ciscoSyslogMIB.2.0.1
clogHistoryEntry.2.1688 = PM
clogHistoryEntry.3.1688 = 5
clogHistoryEntry.4.1688 = ERR_RECOVER
clogHistoryEntry.5.1688 = Attempting to recover from bpduguard err-disable state on Gi1/0/13
clogHistoryEntry.6.1688 = 198609844
Mar 13 09:28:13.737: SNMP: Queuing packet to xx.xx.xx.xx
Looks like the Switch is sending SNMP Traps from the ciscoSyslogMIB. Is this why PI can't show the Traps and convert it into a alarm?
After this test I configured logging (syslog) to the PI. Now the errors are showed but still not converted into alarms. I just want to be notified by email when such errors occurs.
Thanks,
Marc

• Phantom SNMP Traps

Hi,
I've got most of my devices spouting SNMP traps for various different things, and Ciscoworks forwards these traps on via email, as you do.
For most things it works great, however since we've created a script to pull on the configs off the devices (Simply don't trust Ciscoworks), we're always spammed with SNMP traps like the one below:
ALERT ID                = 000071P
TIME                    = Mon 10-Jan-2011 16:19:07 GMT
STATUS                  = Active
SEVERITY                = Critical
MANAGED OBJECT          = lrouter-loo-0.mwam.local
MANAGED OBJECT TYPE = Switches and Hubs
EVENT DESCRIPTION       = router1-loo-0.mwam.local: Cisco Configuration Management Trap:InformAlarm; PORT-lon-cr1-loo-0.mwam.local/10113 [Gi1/0/13] [Trunk to router2-gig-1-0-24]:OperationallyDown;
CUSTOMER IDENTIFICATION = networks-info
I know one port is down, and that's expected, I just haven't cleared the alert and turned off the monitoring in DFM.
We're using:
snmp-server enable traps config-copy
snmp-server enable traps config
on all of our devices, but only 4 out of 80+ devices throw this trap out when their config is copied by the script.
I've googled extensively, but I haven't come across any real help.
Has anyone got any idea what the situation is with this? I'm getting bored of deleting a bunch of emails every time our script runs, and I don't want to create a rule for fear of filtering real alerts.
Any ideas would be appreciated
Cheers

This isn't a trap. This is a DFM alert, which consists of multiple atomic events. In this case, it looks like the alert consists of two events. The first is a CISCO-CONFIG-MAN-MIB trap (i.e. ciscoConfigManEvent). If you look at the associated event in the DFM Alerts and Acitivities Display, I'll bet it will indicate the configuration was copied (per your script). The other event indicates that port Gi1/0/13 is operationally down on this switch. The two events are unrelated, but apply to the same device.

• Experiences with sending SNMP-Traps to 3rd party (Nagios)

Hello Colleagues,
i'm working on a project where we would like to monitor our databases additionally sending SNMP-Traps to Nagios.
At the moment i'm using net-snmp-utils and snmptt. The snmptt-traphandler is running in daemon-mode and passes incoming SNMP-Traps to Nagtrap.
Now i want to create passive service checks. For example a passive service check for TBS_Usage for database 'exdb' which returns the values from the incoming SNMP-Trap.
Has anyone experiences by implementing the SNMP Notifications (to Nagios)? Is there an easier way to implement this than using snmptt?
Does anyone know, how the MIB (snmptt.conf) must be configured for the passive service check?
I'm looking forward hearing from you soon!
Best regards,
Sönke

Hi Nikhil!
Basically I am trying to set trap forwarding to a
a NNM on the network from sunMC 3.5 Update 1.
I have followed all the directions in sunMC snmp FAQ
and other threads on this forum but I am not able to
set the trap destinations.<snip>
Other thread having same question is
http://forum.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=15625&tstart
=0Have you reviewed the options in the other thread? (i.e. Halcyon SNMP integration or HP integration packages). Both are off-the-shelf and if you can understand SunMC SNMP infrastructure you certainly wouldn't have trouble configuring either. If you've looked at both packages, what parts made you decide not to use them? Note: I work for Halcyon.
Building your own custom integration with direct traps may be difficult: the generic snmp faq doens't have all the info you need to do so (i.e. how to get NNM to go backwards to an Agent to request the details of an event like "Warning /op is 95% full" or "Critical: Power Supply 2 is Offline"). I'm not even sure how I'd go about it, and I've been using SunMC for years :)

Mike
