Snow ABS + OS9 + OSX = work?

I am trying to assist my family by eliminating a possible problematic router. Currently they have their cable, comcast, going into a Belkin router then branching off to a G3 running OS9 and to a Snow ABS. The ABS signal is then being picked up by an iMac running OSX. My question is this, could the G3 be plugged into the LAN port on the ABS, eliminating the Belkin and directing the comcast connection directly to the ABS? I don't want to complicate things for them because I can not physically be there, doing this by phone and email, so the more I know ahead of time the better. I do believe that I had looked into this before and for some reason I never went through with the idea.
Thanks

Turn off the cable modem. This is required so that the cable modem will forget what device it was talking to and discover a new device to talk to.
Then connect the cable modem to the WAN port of the snow ABS.
It doesn't matter if the Macs are running OS X or OS 9. It doesn't matter which Mac is used to configure the snow ABS.

Quite seriously, though, if you wish to use MS Office to it's full potential and if you depend on it on a regular basis, then upgrading to Office 2011 is the only reccommended way to go. You can use the free Apps mentioned, learn to use iWorks (which I love, but others don't) or make your system a shambles and lose your easy to use interface by the other method. Deduct the cost of Parallels from MS Office and it becomes pretty cheap, if that is the only PPC program you wish to use, which is the norm as PPC is long gone from development.
MS Office 2011 is not expensive if it is one of your major work tools. Think of those who had to update their Adobe software!
    Anyhow Cheers

  • Can't get OS9 to work within OSX Tiger

Has anyone had success using OS9 within the newest Tiger? I have a favorite app that requires OS9 to work and the instructions in my Mac are vague about how to install the old operating system to have it work within OSX.
I recently did a complete wipe of my hard drive and installed the latest Tiger OS. I created two partitions for the hard drive. I used the single disc OS9 install CD (the one that came with my Powerbook a few years ago) and successfully went through the install process using the second partition, the one that OSX is not on. The OS9 system folder does appear in the partition list of items.
When I click on the app I want to use, the OS9 window pops up and says "Classic starting up using 'system folder' on 'untitled 2' (that's the partition name. The problem is that OS9 never completes starting up and I'm not able to use my app. I've waited ten+ minutes and OS still hasn't completed starting up.
    Can anyone help?
    John

    John, try this:
    1) Go to System Preferences -> Classic -> Start/Stop tab. Make sure the OS 9 System Folder is the one you want. (Hover the pointer over the selected one to see its location. Make sure it is the one on the 'untitled 2' partition, for example.)
    2) Leave the pref open -- you will need it again shortly.
    3) Open Disk Utilty. From its "File" menu select "Fix OS 9 permissions." This will repair OS X permissions on the OS 9 install you selected above. You can now quit Disk Utility.
    4) Back in Classic preferences, select the "Advanced" tab. Click the "Rebuild Desktop" button. Select the volume from step 1 & Click "Rebuild." (This step is just for good measure & not strictly necessary.)
    5) In the top section labeled "Startup and other options" make sure "Turn off extensions" is selected, then click the "Start Classic" button next to it. (This is the most important step.)
If Classic now starts up with no problems, what you have is an old fashioned extension conflict. If so, stop Classic & switch to "Open Extension Manager" in the "Startup and other options" section, restart Classic & select one of the top two sets in Extensions Manager, next to the "Selected Set:" text. (These are the standard 'All' & 'Base' sets.)
If Classic now finishes starting up, you will have to do the old process of elimination routine to find the conflicting extension(s).
BTW, to boot into OS 9 from the partition, you must have an OS 9 boot driver on the drive (not volume) you boot from. You can make sure that is there with Disk Utility. Select the drive (not the volume) & click the blue "Info" button. Look for the line in the info window that pops up that says "Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed :" -- you want it to say "yes."

  • Snow ABS stopped working with Adelphia Motorola 4100

Snow ABS has worked with Motorola 4100 cable modem for several years. Had a power surge the other day, but I don't know if this matters. Modem now works fine if hardwired to Powerbook ethernet port. When connected to Snow ABS, the modem drops out every 2-3 minutes. Activity light and send, receive, and online lights drop out in sequence, then struggle to come back on. This cycles repeatedly. WHen this is happening, it doesn't matter if the powerbook is on. The Snow lights keep flashing. Moving the ethernet back to the powerbook, and restarting it, will keep a solid connection for hours, whether you do anything on the machine or not. Running 10.4.2. Suggestions? Do I need to buy a new Airport?

    Try Starting from scratch.
If this fails to solve the problem, I think you need to buy a new base station.

  • Roaming: WEP on Snow ABS, WPA on AirPort Express?

We have a Snow AirPort Base Station and an AirPort Express. We had a roaming network set up that worked perfectly. (Same Network Name and Password on each base station.) We are using an iBook that has the original AirPort card and OS 10.4.3.
When I set the AirPort Express to do WPA we lost roaming, even though we still have the same Network Name and Password on both.
Can we have a roaming network with one ABS on WEP and one on WPA?
Can't find anything about this on Apple Support or via Google.
    Thanks.
    - Winston

The solution is to use WEP on both base stations.
Why do you need to run WPA on one network and WEP on the other, why don't you run WEP on both?
It can't be a security issue as your network is as secure as the lowest denomnator, therefore the weakest part of the network is the WEP, it doesn't matter if you run WPA, you can not improve the security on your network, even if you had two separate wireless networks with two SSIDs, if one is WEP encrypted.
Say the base stations had different network names
(SSIDs), and one had WEP and the other WPA. If I was
using one, then put my iBook to sleep, then moved to
the second ABS, my iBook should pick up the second
ABS when I wake it up.
    Yes
Why can AirPort change from one known network to
another when it sleeps, then awakes in a different
place, can roam between two networks with the same
SSID, password, and encryption, but cannot roam
between networks with the same name, password but
    different encryption?
When you have a roaming network you are not running two networks, but are running a single network with two nodes.
    1. Can I use the same SSID and password for the ABS's
with different encryption (one WEP, one WPA) and
    switch between them manually?
    No
    2. Or should I use different SSID's and switch
    manually?
No just use WEP on both base stations, or upgrade the Snow ABS to an AEBS or AX so you can use WPA on your wireless network.

  • Snow ABS as wired external modem?

My Aunt bought has need of an external modem for her new modem-less Mac Mini (her broadband options are not working out).
I have an opportunity to get an old Snow ABS that I figured I could connect via Ethernet. It has had its wireless card removed however and I'm not sure if this renders the whole unit inoperative or not.
Does anyone know if the modem would still function without the card in the base station?

Why don't you try using it? I hope it does work. It should since it is a wired router as well as a wireless.

  • Graphite or Snow ABS with Extreme ABS

Currently I have a ABS Extreme and instead of finding a compatible Airport PCI card for my G3 B&W I was going to add a Graphite or Snow ABS to the network. The reason for the Graphite or Snow is that I run OS9 and have no plans to upgrade to X. The Extreme is Adminned by my MacBook. Is it possible for a Graphite or Snow to join a wireless Extreme network using the Graphite or Snow as an Airport to ethernet bridge to my Power mac? Also if this is possible does the Snow or Graphite require an airport card and what kind? Thanks for the info in advance!!!

Have you thought about using a newer Airport Express for what you want to do?
I personally wouldn't waste my money on older wireless equipment unless there was no other choice.
I have many friends connecting their older Macs to the new "n" version of the Airport Express using an ethernet cable. This then gives them the wireless connection to their other base stations from the old computer.
Then if you do ever get rid of your old Mac, you would still have the Airport Express for Airtunes or a remote printer or Hard Disk...
    My 2 Cents....

  • Greetings: I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked.  I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - except Bluetooth. The Bluetooth icon isn't there. Any ideas?

    Greetings:
I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked for the wireless Apple keyboard and mouse.  I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - everything except Bluetooth.
The Bluetooth icon does not exist in the System Preferenc screen.
I tried to download Bluetooth from Apple site but the message I got told me that I didn't need it.
Under Finder, Utilities, I found Bluetooth File Exchange but the message I got was that I had to connect a Bluetooth device to my computer.
I have to admit that I have no idea what's going on here.  I am hoping to avert the need to try another complete re-install of Snow Leopard.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Puzzled is a polite word for it.
Thanks Barry - I found the file and trie to send it to trash.  The response: (This item cannot be trashed as it it owned by the system).
After dancing around with PRAM and SMC and turning on while holding the power-cntrl-option-shift and heavens knows what else, I now have the Bluetooth symbol on the top of the menu bar but it is ghoseted and has a squiggly line through it.   This, I didn't have before so I read this as some progress.  It notes that "Bluetooth is not available">
However, the Bluetooth icon is still missing from the System Preferences window - you know, between "network" and "sharing".
You note that you reckon the issue is not software based and you may be correct.  The reason that I wonder about that though, is that before I installed Snow Leopard, the keyboard and mouse both paired with the box under the Tiger 10.4.  That leads me to conclude that hardware is functional and that there is some screwy little bit of software that is not cooperating.
If I could delete Bluetooth from the system and re-install a fresh version, that might help.  Or, is there a way I can use the Snow Leopard install disc and only load in Bluetooth?
    I'm stumped.
    Thanks for your time
    /Bill C.

  • Problems with Snow ABS

It may be my Snow(dual) ABS has had it. I've lost all airport connections. I can still connect to the internet from the base computer (which is connected to the Snow ABS) but no other computers can connect to the airport. The airport bars are grayed out and no network can be identified. I have done both soft and hard ABS resets so no avail, re-loaded the ABS software, etc.
Any help would be appreciated before I have to break down and but an Airport extreme.

Hello adharris. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, based on your description, it does sound like the AirPort card inside the ABS has failed. Considering it only operated in the 802.11b radio mode and had WEP security, you may be better served with either a new AirPort Extreme or another vendor's product.

  • After upgrading to snow leopard my charger works intermittently, could this be a software issue or just a coincidence

After upgrading to snow leopard my charger works intermittently, could this be a software issue or just a coincidence

Very likely this is a coincidence. Have you tried resetting your System Management Controller? That would be the best first step for any issue that has to do with power.

  • How can I configure Snow ABS after updating firmware to 5.7?

I have a 3 Mac network (G5 w/Tiger,vers A iMac and Wallstreet PB w/ Panther) connected by Snow ABS extreme that's been running perfectly for a couple of years. I updated the firmware on the ABS to 5.7 in efforts to have a configuration my Treo 650 with Enfora WiFi adaptor could join (it's 802.11b only and Enfora suggested updating the firmware and selecting b/g option). After the firmware update, Airport Admin Utility doesn't see the ABS unless I connect it to the G5 running AAU by ethernet (don't know if it's a crossover but I read on the forum it now doesn't matter). Trouble is when I then give my password, try to configure I get "The Airport Admin Utility was unable to read the configuration on the selected base station...an error occured while reading the configuation". I've tried updating the FW again, soft and hard resets, made sure I have the latest AirPort (4.2.1)and nothing helps. I pulled out my original snow ABS (not extreme) and my DSL and whole network function like before. I like the extreme since I can use my Airport Express to print for everybody and it then completes my coverage much better. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is no reason to be running beta software, I doubt it will even still run as iOS 6 has been officially released.  Or were you simply trying to be funny?
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • AEBS doesn't broadcast as well as the Snow ABS

I just replaced a Snow ABS with a new AEBS. Before the Snow BS stopped broadcasting, I could get 4 bars of reception throughout most of the office. With the AE, I am only getting 2 bars in the same room, and 1 bar if I am in a different part of the office.
Help!!! I need a better signal or my business partner will replace it with a Linksys.
BTW, I have shut off IP6 (I heard that could make a difference, but it didn't) and I am using the TCP/IP settings in the Airport Admin Utility that were given by the ISP.

Try using b mode only and see if that makes a difference.
Having said that one bar of reception will still mean a decent connection.

  • Trouble resetting Snow ABS

Hello. I've followed the tech document http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58613 on resetting my Snow ABS, but I can't seem to do it. I don't get the amber lights as stated in #4 (in the document). Any suggestions on how to reset it beyond it?
I need to reset it because I'm troubleshooting my connection. Please see my post, "Configuring Snow ABS with Cable Modem" and pitch in there if you can!
    Thanks!

Could it be because you were using the instructions to reset the Graphite base station and not the Snow's. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106602)
