Snow iMac 600mhz with crazy display problems

my Snow iMac starts up fine, but after a short time the screen turns to bars of various colors and the cursor shows as a one inch square (which I can still move around with the mouse)
If I unplug it for a few hours it will start up fine again, then become whacked after a short time.
I'm thinking this is obviously some component over heating causing this. My question is which part has gone bad?
I've done all the typical stuff: (re-set PRAM, booted from Disk, ran hardware test (everything passed) tried different RAM, swapped harddrives.
Is there a cooling fan thats not working? (I don't suspect there is)
Are there any other checks or test I can try before I write this one off?

I also have a Snow 600 mhz and I have the same problem but with mine it will change from yellow to green to red and then to normal again. In fact it just did it to me right now! It just started happening this morning. Another thing, I bought a power surge protector with all the switches at a yard sale for 3 bucks and since then my fax machine has died and my mac is on the blitz all within a period of 1 month. Could this be a coincedence or possibly a problem with the power surge protector. I am very worried about the mac. The fax machine was give to me and this could be a serious problem with my mac.

  • IMac 400mhz with crazy display problems

I just finished assembling an iMac CRT and everything works great except for the display. For some reason the colors dont wanna line up and i cant figure out what the problem is. Ive tried everything i can think of. I ended up plugging in another monitor and everything on that display is fine. Is my iMac CRT toast?

    hi bob robson,
for installing 10,4 tiger, you need an Apple which has built-in fireWire. this means that at least iMac 400 or a later model. 640 MB RAM is enough for installation. By the way, iMac G3 (640MB) is not an enough explanation to classify your mac.
    skype 1,4 needs:
Macintosh computer with G3, G4, G5, or Intel processor
Mac OS X v10.3.9 Panther or newer. (The widget requires Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.)
    128 MB RAM
20 MB free disk space on your hard drive
    Microphone
Internet connection (either dial-up: minimum 33.6 Kbps, or any broadband: cable, DSL, etc.)
so if your iMac is 400Mhz or more and have 10.3.9 or 10.4.x installed, yes you can use skype.

  • IMac as an external display, problem with trackpad/mouse pairing

    Hi,
I am trying to use the imac as an external display for a macbook air, which is well supported/advertised by apple.
I can toggle the display easily between the imac and the macookair, the problem I’m having is that I only have one wireless keyboard and one wireless trackpad. As I toggle the display, the paring/unpairing of both trackpad and mouse is a real hastle becuase I have to manually go into bluetooth preferences and adjust the settings for both devices.
Anyone using the imac as external display with an idea/suggestion how to make this process more friendly?
Thank in advance for any help.

I don't think you can.  Wish I had better news.  Target display mode for non-thunderbolt 27" Imacs worked OK.  I have done it myself on a late 2009 iMac.  The new iMacs can only go into target display mode when connected thunderbolt to thunderbolt.  So a new macbook or macbook air can do the trick but your dell can't.  What you can do is remote desktop or VNC to the dell.  Now your dell screen will show up but in a smaller window.

  • Having some problems with t61 display problems..

i am using a intergrated graphic card for the t61...
but what i dont understand is when i install the latest drivers through lenovo download site for the graphic card, there will be some display problems when i set to screen resolution to 800x600 or 1024 the whole screen will tend to be very small and not stretch properly according the the screen..
however i uninstall the latest drivers and went to intel to install the older drivers for the intergrated gfx.. after that everyday work properly..
when i had the latest drivers when i play games like warcraft or counterstrike the screen will also go very small however after using the old graphic card, the problem did not occur... can anyone tell me how do i install the latest drivers because i believe the older driver is not really expanding the gfx to the max.. thanks..

    random reboots are quite common
try updating the software before you do anything else.
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.

  • IMac 27" with Thunderbolt Display connected, Boot Camp Problem

    Hi everyone.
Let me start off by saying that I'm using a late 2012 iMac 27", 3.4 GHz i7, 680MX, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB Fusion, with a Thunderbolt Display connected.
I installed Windows 8 via Boot Camp, and it works just fine. Here comes my problem:
I have dual screens and I play Minecraft. Minecraft's full screen is basically crap, and therefore I disabled the iMac display. I used Windows-button+P to use only the secondary display. This turns the iMac display off entirely, and leaves the Thunderbolt Display on. Note: This is not possible in Mac OS X. Then I played a little Minecraft. When I was done, i wanted the main iMac display to come on again. I then used Windows-button+P again, to turn both displays on. Then bam, totally looked like the iMac display was broken. See the images below, to see how it looks:
    1) http://cl.ly/image/1p2e3c1Z1z1C
    2) http://cl.ly/image/2g0n1M1Y0t0g

    4) http://cl.ly/image/113b3K2O1Z43
    5) http://cl.ly/image/1q2v1s1n3w1f
This image-retention-like stuff stays there, even if I reboot into Mac OS X, and then it eventually disappears. I can reproduce this, by doing the same thing again, (windows-button+p) but only in Windows, because that you cannot turn of the main display in Mac OS X. Maybe this is the reason why you can't?
Anyone can tell me what I can do? I guess I could try reinstalling, but it seems more like a hardware issue, than a software issue.
Thank you for your time, and thanks in advance.
Another note: I'll try doing the opposite, and see if it happens on the Thunderbolt Display as well. (Windows-button+P, and then only using the main display)

Ok, I am marking this as "answered", as I have solved it myself, while I still have no clue what lead to the problem in the first place.
I've been on the phone with Apple Care today, and they were as clueless as I was and had never heard of this before.
After we tried the usual stuff (unplugging all wires, PRAM Reset, SMC Reset), to no avail, I was told it could well be a hardware problem and that I should have the iMac examined at the Genius Bar, so an appointment was made.
I'll cancel that one though, as I was able to cure it by myself for now (and carrying around a 27" iMac in Munich's busy downtown pedestrian zone is not really fun).
This is what I did (and I'm so happy I tried):
In Display Settings, I switched the external display back to landscape mode and selected "mirror displays".
Then I rebooted, and voilà, the problem was gone (Apple logo on white background was showing).
I switched it back to 90 degrees rotation and no mirroring, and it's still all ok.
I booted Windows 7 in Bootcamp, then back to Snow Leopard, and it's all still fine.
I can still only wonder what messed this up in the first place, but for now I'm happy.

  • IMac G5 17" iSight display problem

Hi - I have an iMac G5 17" iSight. Specs are 1.5 Ghz G5, 2.5 GB RAM, 150 GB Hard Drive and SuperDrive. The Hard Drive is wiped clean, I boot it with an external FW drive running 10.5.7.
Here are the issues: As soon as the machine boots, the LCD shows 3 permanent vertical lines on the screen. This is as soon as it displays anything, from the initial Apple logo all the way until shutdown. While it is on and booted up to the desktop, it runs fine, except sometimes it will randomly refresh the screen or change resolutions. These are the only issues.
While I am quite sure it is one of three things (inverter, video cable or LCD), I still took the typical troubleshooting approach and tried any quick fixes I could. These included-
    1. Boot off of known good OS
    2. PRAM Reset
    3. SMU Reset
    4. Reseat RAM
All of these had no effect. From there I tried two more things-
    1. External display via mini VGA
    2. Ran Apple Hardware Test
    3. Ran LCD tester
The external display worked perfectly, which tells me that it isn't the GPU/logic board. I ran AHT and the logic board passed both quick and extended tests. During the extended test I got an error for the ATA bus/drive, but I haven't looked up the error code yet. Everything passed in the quick test. I used the LCD tester, which puts solid colors on the screen (Red, Green, Blue, White, Black). The 3 lines run across the whole screen vertically, and cannot be seen on a solid white screen. On the solid black screen they show up yellow and purple.
Here is a screen shot showing the three vertical lines-
    http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/thisismymind/untitled.jpg
I was wondering if there is an easy way to diagnose this just by looking at it. I was figuring replacing the inverter and/or the video ribbon cable first before replacing the LCD... but if anyone here can diagnose it easily than that may save some time.
    Thanks in advance!

  • IMac 2011 with a biggest problem

    Hi
I have a iMac 27" from 2011 and yesterday i have a problem, when i work in images in full screen, my screen is going crazy, first frozen and after that its appear lines in horizontal (i think is in horizontal not vertical).
So,i need to turn off the computer by the power button (i try to turn off by keyboard but don't work). After that i turn on the iMac and everything works fine, when i start working again in images the iMac have the same problem, so i turn off.
Today i'm trying to turn on and the iMac is rebooting, ( i leave a video to show in few moments) , and stay making this ever and ever again.
Im trying to diagnosting the problem with the key D but i can't enter, still a long time in grey screen and after that enter with Apple logo.
The iMac is out of warranty but i like to know if is enable to replacement program, because i think is the graphic card.

    Thanks Kappy
I check now this page iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program - Apple Support and i fond one line we say
"If the iMac (27-inch) meets these requirements, Apple will replace the video card free of charge for four years after the first retail sale of the computer."
I think if this is my problem i have the replacement .

  • New 27" iMac (2012) with Thunderbolt Display = Bezel Alignment?

I know the previous generation iMacs (16:10 screen aspect ratio) did not physically align with LED/Thunderbolt displays when placed side-by-side. Since the new iMacs have a matching 16:9 screen, I am wondering if the two screens would physically align properly when used as dual displays?

There is nothing wrong with Apple's refurbished machines, you're assuming they are returned with problems. These machines come with the same 1 year warranty as a new machines and are also eligible for AppleCare the same as a new machine. These machine are tested more than a new machine and if any issues are found they are fixed and re-tested. Apple puts machine into the refurb program for many many reasons, these can be new models were introduced and they're clearing old inventory, or scenarios like a husband bought new machine and the wife made him return it for spending money, or a possible defect. Don't take my word for it though search and you'll see Apple's refurbished machines have a terrific reputation.
However I'm getting from reading your posts you are looking for reasons to not get a Mac and stay with Windows. If that's the case they by all means stay with what you know.

  • How can I use my ADC apple cinema display on my iMac 2006 with mini display port?

I got this new screen on eBay for £20 and its an old ADC display and to my annoyance I found there isn't a way to hook it up to my iMac with a mini dvi port . So I was wondering if there is a work around that the community has come up with or if its just best to sell it ( bearing in mind that the next best screen from apple that I know will work is around £80 on eBay)
    Thanks, Jonny

You would need a DVI to ADC adapter, image below, search Ebay to find one in your area.

  • Image slideshow with filmstrip display problem

I'm not sure whether this is the right discussion group for this and therefore if it is wrong I apologise.
Using Dreamweaver CS5 under Windows XP I've developed a new website and tested it to my satisfaction. I've now started to deploy the pages to my new live site. The majority of the deployment has been just using the Synchronize Sitewide facility. As far as I can see everything is working as expected except for one page.
This uses the Spry Image Slideshow with Filmstrip - Basic:#ImageSlideShow. In my development site the varying size pictures display with the picture and black background. In my live page when selecting a new image parts of the previous image are still showing. Can anyone please advise what I should change or need to do for the pictures to display correctly?
The live page can be found at http://baughen.co.uk/HarryBaughan.html
The above snapshot illustrates the error.

Thanks for the suggestion but this code was already in at line 4.
The pan and zoom seems to have kicked in since my last change (I went back and deleted the widget and then reinserted). The problem is less noticeable unless you click on the individual thumbnails. Is there any straightforward documentation on how to manage the pan and zoom, even if it is just to remove it?

  • Soldier in Afghanistan needs help with MBPro display problem

My son is in the Army Infantry (Airborne). His unit is currently stationed in southern Afghanistan on a small Combat Outpost (COP), where he will be for about 8 more months. He has had a MBPro since mid-2008, and his AppleCare Extended warranty is still in affect. This is his description of the state of his MBPro:
"hey dad, an update. I got the mac to boot using PRM reset. Now, it makes the boot noise and the keyboard lights up but the LCD screen still wont come up. From my online research it seems my nvidia graphics card has gone out. Something which can be repaired cheaply at an apple store. However, i have no way to mail back my computer and the repair involves tearing apart the logic board to replace the video card."
I called Apple and was told Apple must receive the laptop stateside. As my son said, it is impossible for him, a lowly Specialist, to ship anything home. The guys in his unit are resourceful, and they do have the tools needed to attempt repairs (spuds, etc.). However, we would have to get a replacement logic board to him (at our expense), and we've looked at www.ifixit.com and found the tutorial for replacing a logic board. I personally would never attempt such a repair, even though I have myself replaced a hard drive in my PB and the power port in my wife's laptop. The logic board is WAY under everything else, and the chances of a screw-up are great. And, of course, the Apple warranty would be voided.
Does anyone have enough experience with logic board repairs to say they SHOULD attempt the repair on site? OR, is there anyone in the military who can suggest a way to actually get this Apple "brick" stateside for repair under the warranty?

To be fair to Apple, their warranty does state that the need for a repair/replacement must be shown to be necessary to their satisfaction. That means they have to have the MBPro in their hands to examine it. At this time, we cannot prove that the Nvidia card on the LB has failed. Over the 20+ years I've used Apple computers, they've been very good at honoring their warranties. It's not Apple's fault that my son is in a rather faraway place. How many other high tech companies do you know of who have coverage arrangements in this kind of situation? We're not expecting Apple to do anything more for us right now. If we can get the MBPro stateside, I'm sure Apple will treat us well.
As for a cheap PC laptop, well, that probably wouldn't be a good solution, either. My son is a gamer and uses Windows on the MBPro only for games not available under OS X. The MBPro is an OK, but not great, PC game laptop. However, a cheap PC laptop would probably be WORSE for gaming, so it wouldn't be a good buy. An expensive gamer PC is not an option, as my son hates Windows!
So, there's our conundrum. Right now, it looks like our best solution would be to get a used MBPro (non-Nvidia!), ship it (hoping it gets there in one piece), then swap the memory from the broken machine into the replacement. This will not void the Extended Warranty. Then my son can re-install his data (and Windows) from the external drive that he uses for Time Machine. That's the current idea, anyway.
All-in-all, while this is a complicated problem with no easy solution, it's not that big a deal, relative to everything that's going on in my son's life.
    Thanks for your suggestions!

  • Can anyone help with unstable display problem

I have my InDesign preference set to High Quality Display.  When I open a file it displays fine.  But a few seconds later it reverts to Typical Display mode.  The High Quality display checkbox is still checked and there is nothing I can do to have the file display in high quality.  Any suggestions?

I am afraid your suggestion did not solve my problem.  I renamed the two files suggested, but the problem persists.  Any new suggestions would be really appreciated.  I am just unable to see my documents in high resolution.
Again, they start out looking good and slowly every image transitions to low resolution.  It's really wierd how it's transitioning, almost unnoticeably.  But within about a minute they are all pixelated.
