Snow Leopard 10.6.1 - Automator

Hi,
I've created a workflow in Automator, trying to organize my Downloads folder.
It goes, "Filter Finder Items", and then, "Move Finder Items".
I've lined it up, so that the Filter Finder Items "code", takes any file extension with ".dmg" and then on the Move Finder Items part, it moves those extensions to my created "dmg(s)" folder, which is inside the Downloads folder.
However, when I "Run" the workflow in Autumator, it tells me I need to place "Get Specified Finder Items" at the beginning of my workflow, in order for it to run, or whatever.
However, then it finishes up, after I okay it, and it comes up as failed. The first part of the workflow, is checked off with green, and then the 2nd part, comes up as failed, in red.
What am I doing wrong here?
Thanks

Not sure if I completely understand. Although, I did what the above person told me to do, and it happened to work, and organize all my .dmg files into my new folder, within downloads.
What I want, is Automator to automatically organize these files, while I download, and use my computer. I don't want to have to trigger it to do so, I want it just to work in the background.
you did not explain that in your first post.
there are two ways to achieve this in principle.
Method one. you can save your workflow as a folder action. in this case the workflow has to be redone from scratch differently. when you first open automator or initiate a new workflow in automator it gives you a pulldown screen where you choose which kind of workflow you are making. choose "folder action". at the top set it to be attached to "Downloads". the wrokflow itself should be like this
1. filter finder items.
filter by extension dmg
2. move finder items.
save the folder action. Now, this is how it's done in principle but it won't work well in this case for several reasons. first, folder actions are still quite buggy and unreliable and often misfire even if configured correctly.
secondly, the way it's set up now the folder action will fire as soon as you start downloading a dmg, not waiting for the download to finish. therefore, the action will most likely fail. there are ways around this by using apple script but they don't work well either.
Therefore I suggest you forget that method altogether. instead, recreate the workflow I gave you originally as an ical alarm and set it to run once a day with ical.

  • Automator (version 2.04) will not run in snow leopard.  Upgrade how?

    Hi all -
I upgraded to Snow Leopard and find it wonderful. The only trouble I have is using Automator. The version I have is 2.04 and when I launch it, it gives me the following message:
"You can't run this version of the application Automator with this version of Mac OS X. You have Automator 2.0.4." My visits to Apple download site has been unsuccessful.
I did download an "Automator Extension Pack" from the Apple site for Leopard and that runs but it does not give me the function I need.
I want to stop and start an application on a schedule. Should be a simple task. Maybe someone can help me with that problem instead? I assume Automator is part of the solution.
Thanks for your attention. I am running 10.6.2 OS X.

The new version of Automator (2.1) should have been installed with the Snow Leopard update. It's normal location is in the /Applications folder, so if you had moved the earlier version to some other location or installed onto a different partition, make sure you are running the right copy.

  • Automator app made in Mavericks doesn't work in Snow Leopard

Made a simple troubleshooting app for my staff with some dialog boxes (ask for confirmation) and an app restart (killall and open commands). Saved it as an app and it works fine in Mavericks and Mountain Lion. On Snow Leopard, the app opens with the opening file animation but does nothing. It never even shows up in Activity Monitor.
Did I miss a setting somewhere or is Automator just not backwards compatible like that?

Some workflows will work well going from 10.9 backwards to earlier OS / Automator versions but there are going to be many workflows that don't work without modifications. Part of the issue will be file system arrangement as you suggested.
Another source of problems could be that the behavior of various workflow actions may change from one version of Automator to another. Several of the Address Book / Contacts related actions, for example, no longer work the same way that the did. This was true even before the name of the Address Book was changed to Contacts.

  • Snow Leopard Automator - where are the files saved?

    Hi,
I've been trying to run some Automator apps I have. In Tiger, the files would be saved in the same directory as the original files, but in Snow Leopard I can't find them anywhere. I'm having trouble with Spotlight (in another post), so I can't search for the files as I would normally do.
Any ideas where Automator might be saving these files? Same behaviour when I create a new app as well, can't find the files...
    Thanks

I think I just found them myself: in your user's Library > Workflows > Applications

  • Automator errors under Snow Leopard

    Hi everyone,
Since upgrading my MacBook to Snow Leopard (I have the latest 10.6.3 update), Automator behaves very erratically. The window ‘AppleScript Error; The result of a numeric operation was too large. (-2702)’ pops up frequently at various stages of opening, using, or modifying my workflows previously created under Leopard.
I still get this erratic behavior even if I try to remake my workflows from scratch in Snow Leopard. Even stranger is that I can get a workflow to behave fine for a little while, and then it starts getting crazy again. Some Automator actions (Rename Finder item, Get Specified URLs, Run Applescript) seem to be especially prone to triggering the error.
This problem is general and very annoying, and I was thus surprised to find very few threads about this issue when I searched the Apple forums (assuming I searched correctly) or using Google.
Because of this issue, I have refrained from upgrading my Mac Pro to Snow Leopard, while waiting for future updates to hopefully fix the problem (which hasn’t happened so far).
Did anyone else encounter this problem, and if so, how do you solve it?
Any hint would be much appreciated.

I was loosing hope for a solution. But running Automator in 32-bit mode does work! Thank you Lupus42.
Now I can dare to install Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro. But because of this Automator error story, I’m still anxious about making the transition. So I’ll seek the safest way to try Snow Leopard. I know I can reinstall Leopard if Snow Leopard still causes me trouble, but I’d prefer not to mess with my current system at all. I’ve heard you can upgrade a disk image of your system instead, or create a new partition on your disk. I don’t know if these options are actually feasible and better, but I’d to explore these alternatives before altering my current system. Maybe I’ll start a new thread about this if needed.
Thanks everyone for sharing your similar problems (and showing me I wasn’t crazy) and your solution to the problem.

  • Automator error and Snow Leopard

In Snow Leopard's Automator, I'm getting an error that says my Automator actions are not Universal, which is incorrect, since they are certainly Universal Binaries.
However, after doing some research, I've found other similar cases, and it seems that this error is misguiding, and that the Automator actions just have not been compiled to be 64-bit yet. From my quick glance in Xcode, however, if I want to make a 32/64-bit UB Action, it is only compatible with Mac OS 10.5 and above. Am I wrong in my assumption? Might it be possible to build appropriate versions of the Automator actions that will work with Mac OS 10.4 through 10.6?

My concern is how feasible is it to get a 32+64-bit and PPC/Intel hybrid Automator Action that can run on Mac OS 10.4 - 10.6.
Apple has this to say about that...
    -=-=-=-
    Automator Actions as Universal Binaries
A universal binary is executable code that can run on either PowerPC-based or Intel-based Macintosh computers.
To move a PowerPC-only project to a universal-binary project may require work involving such programming details as endianness, alignment, and calling conventions. The amount of work generally depends on the level of the source code; lower-level source code (for example, the kernel) requires more work than higher-level code (for example, an application based on Carbon).
The need to make an Automator action a universal binary depends on the language used:
    ■ AppleScript actions are platform-independent and do not require any changes to run on Intel processors.
    ■ An action that contains Objective-C code, whether a Cocoa-only action or an action that contains a mix of Objective-C and AppleScript, must be built as a universal binary to run correctly on both Intel and PowerPC processors.
For information on making universal binaries, see 'Universal Binary Programming Guidelines, Second Edition'.

  • Automator category for Snow Leopard?

There doesn't appear to be an Automator section under the Snow Leopard discussion board. Am I missing something, or has it been moved elsewhere?

I'll check under the general developer's list. I found that some of my Automator actions are getting an "This is not Universal" in Snow Leopard, which is not correct, since they are certainly Universal Builds! However, I found the same issue on a forum for Pixelmator, and it sounds like that the Automator actions just haven't been compiled to have a 64-bit version.
However, this might only be available for Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6, supposedly?

  • Where are Automator workflows in Snow Leopard?

I have created a number of workflows in Leopard, and the ones I created for Finder were always available via contectual menus (right click on file).
I cannot get how to use them in Snow Leopard. The ones I moved over don't show up at all.

Thanks, Linc... for some reason, i can only Save As... Workflow or Application. Services is not available.
I am able to open the workflow. I receive a warning that itmes may have changed... Then when I Save As... I only see the 2 choices. Saving as an Application does save a drag-n-drop App... and it works correctly, but I used to really like/depnd on the contectual menu availability.
    Hmmm....

  • Folder Actions still unreliable in Snow Leopard

    Hello everybody,
I used to give folder actions a try in Tiger, then in Leopard and now in Snow Leopard I still see that in terms of reliability, folder actions still seem to be useless - at least to me.
Yesterday I created a folder action in Automator which is intended to just *move files* that have been downloaded with Safari in the Downloads folder, to another folder, nested in the Downloads folder itself.
So for example when I download a file with a .rar .dmg .iso .zip extension, it should move it to the next folder "archives" where a similar folder action awaits the files to be moved according to their "type" in the next folders (rar, dmg, iso and zip). The same thing for images, music and movies.
It works for a few files, but then for some reason (the holy Apple gods know why) it gets picky or lazy if you like : it just doesn't work 100%. I can manually drag out the files it didn't "act upon" and redrop them in the folder - still no joy.
And I noticed a flickering or blinking of the finder window. Really weird....
So I fire this out in hope that some of you share the same frustration
Maybe somebody knows how to fix this.
Or maybe I'm doing something wrong..
    cheers
    X

Thanks for the quick and helpful reply!
I also thought that incomplete files downloaded through Safari could mess up things, but it seems to be a general issue the way the folder script "asks for the files". I tried the same folder action in a different folder, where I manually drag 'n dropped several files manually in it - still no joy. 49 out of 100 files just stayed put. It's so frustrating.
And I believe such thing as folder actions is tremendously useful if it "just works" - I download so many files on daily basis at my University - wether it is PDFs, photos, music whatever - that after a while the whole idea of "Stacks" and Coverflow in the Downloads folder just becomes a real useless pain. You just can't find anything through browsing. Sure you could search - if you know what to search for - but almost every file nowadays in the Net has a cryptic file name. So if I look for "applepie" the real file turns out to be "3934iiijpjfedi923.jpg
folder actions could at least help us get things more "organized"
    but..
    nope.
I just found out that my folder action has a problem with "hidden extensions"...
    oh dear...
i think I'll stick to my wasted hours of cleaning up my mac on sundays...

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks failed - disk is damaged and can't be repaired.

    Hello,
I'm afraid the answer is exactly what I don't want.  But here is my situation.
I've been trying to download and install Mavericks - I was running Snow Leopard.  My system was working fine - I wanted to upgrade so that I could run a game on it - but it required Mavericks.
Finally, it looked like Mavericks was installing.  Once I restarted my computer, I got the following message:
"Install Failed. OS X could not be installed on your computer (there's a big scary yellow triangle with an exclaimation point in it below this). The OS X upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired. After your computer restarts, back up your data, erase your disk, and try installing again. Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
Every time I restart, I get the same message, I can't back up my data and erase my disk like it wants me to; it won't let me. I can't get back to my normal computer. I've tried restarting in Safe Mode, but it doesn't work - it just keeps restarting over and over again. If my computer is really this determined to not let me have Mavericks, fine, but I at least want my old computer back. As it is now, I can't do anything on it besides restart it.
If I could just get to Finder, I could save some files and just reformat it - if the hard disk can be repaired.  Even if it can't, I just need my documents.  Here is the Installer Log:

Thank you for any help you can give me.

You are never going to have the option to repair a disk if you are booted from the same disk.
I think the place to start is boot off your Snow Leopard DVD install disk by holding down the C key on boot up.
Under Utilities drop down menu  you will have access to Disk Utility.
From  here you will have the option to repair Disk (ie not grayed out.)
option: Either insert and wait for the Mac OS X Install DVD window and double-click the Install icon;  or power down, then start up while holding down the "C" key.  Either way, that takes a few minutes.

  • Services in Snow Leopard

    Hi.
I'm sorry, I know there are many discussions, like this online...
I need to put a script that I wrote among Snow Leopard services..I mean those that I can activate in the "Keyboard and Shortcuts" panel.
I tried to save my script as a service using Automator, but it is now displayed in the "Services" menu of every Application! I wanted it to show up only when Finder is active. How can I do that?
    Thanks.

I don't understand - when you take some file that already exist on the hard disk and modify it, your script is acting on a file. If the "Service receives selected _files or folders_ in Finder", then your service will be available in the contextual *Services Menu* when you right-click on files or folders, and those selected items will be passed to your workflow.
It sounds like you may not want a service - you can make a script available when the Finder is active by using the *Script Menu* (AppleScript Editor > Preferences > General) and placing your script (or an alias) it in the ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Finder folder. You can't use a keyboard shortcut with the Script Menu though, so you might take a look at FastScripts, which uses the same script locations but adds keyboard shortcuts.
You can also drag a script application onto the Finder's toolbar.

  • QT X and yFlicks using Snow Leopard this is my last hope.

I have been a user of the software yFlicks from Many Tricks for a long time. It is an iPhoto type app for keeping your movies organized and it has many features just for movies. It worked excellent under Leopard 10.5. Ever since I installed Snow Leopard 10.6 with QT X, I have 3 issues with yFlicks. I come here only after attempting to contact Many Tricks many times. Lets just say it looks like Many Tricks are longer around, they have have not responded to emails and there web site has not been updated since Oct '08
    My issues are:
1.) The the preview images no longer show up, when you rebuild them using a software function of yFlicks, they are there for that session only. The next time you start the app the preview images are they are gone again.
2.) When using the convert function in batch mode it will only do 1 file then it clears the reset of the pending files and stops converting. I have noticed that sometimes it might do several files then stop.
3.) When clicking on the Help function it crashes the program and sends out a report to Apple.
As a side note my yFlicks library has close to 2000 files in it. Everything to from short You Tube clips to full length films.
If anyone out there might have an answer to fix these issues or a similar app. I would be very thankful.

Be safe out there its a strange world out there

I have sent 10 emails to Many Tricks to the 3 different addresses listed in there web site. Not a reply or an automated response from them. Also note that the web site
    http://www.manytricks.com
has not been updated in over a year. I just didn't know where else to turn for possible solutions. So I came here for a possible alternate solution or someone who found a work around to the issues I have encountered.
    Thank you for your time

  • In Snow Leopard, Autofill cannot see the Access file.

For years this MacBookPro running older OS X versions had no problem with autofill accessing the Access Keychain or the Address Book. I relied on it andit was always there.
But ever since I installed and updated Snow Leopard, autofill fails nearly every time. For example, before Snow my login to gmail was automated. With Snow autofill automates my login name but not the password. I didn't change anything. Autofill changed.
And it seems to be random failure. It ignores "Leave me logged in" check boxes. It will remember login and password to some ordinary commercial sites and not others. For example, autofill refused today to recognize my account at rockauto.com. I set up a second account and it refuses to see that one also. Both are checked "Keep me logged in."
Has Apple published a fix or workaround for this bug?

If you're referring to desktop icons, right click on the desktop > Show view options > check "show item information".

  • Iphoto9 and snow leopard

    Hi,
This is my first question on this discussion group.
Until now I used --not very much -- iphoto withouit any real need ot dig into the way it works.
I have just installed snow leopard on a new disk and imported the library that I had on another disk.
When I looked into the files that were copied, I was surprised to see that there was a "originals" folder and a "modified folder" which do not eactly contain the same size photos not the same number.
First very basic question (I got too many thread links with the key words I used to search...) Is the modified folder containing photos that I mofied WITHIN iphot ? such as changing orientation or is it something else ?
Second question Can I delete the modified folder without altering the library ?
Third question was "import" the best choice to copy the photos from the library ? or should I have copied directly the olds folders into the new iphoto library.
Fourth question After importing a new set of photos on my "master" iphoto library, what is the best way to update simultaneously the copies of my iphoto library that are located on different disks ?
    Thanks in advance
    Ivan
These questions are important to me because I am going to do it again on the new iMAC that I am expecting any day now...
this brings me to a very basic question

    Nothing unusual there.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to look inside: Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
but if I want to find a particular photo by name in a particular folder, I don't have access to these folders....
Rooting around in the iPhoto Library Folder has never been supported in iPhoto.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
All of the above are a: faster and b: safer than rooting around in the folders of the old iPhoto Library Folder.
    Regards
    TD
