    Just upgraded to snow leopard, downloader apple support drivers for canon mp620.  Why won't a printer list display in add printer window?

    Assuming the MP620 is connected to your wireless network, then there are two components to this device - the printer and the scanner. The printer uses Canon proprietary software while the scanner is supported by Apple's Bonjour service. So in many cases, you will at least see the scanner, shown as Bonjour Scanner in the Kind column, while the printer can take longer to appear and is shown as canonijnetwork in the Kind column. If you cannot see either then you have a network issue. Try turning off the MP620 for a minute and then turning back on. Then see if the scanner / printer component appears in the Add Printer window. If you still don't see either, then confirm the MP and the Mac are using the same network. If you know the MP's IP address you can use Network Utility to Ping the address. You can also enable Bonjour Bookmarks in Safari preferences and when selected, the MP620 should appear.

    Is there a autosave app for snow leopard kinda like the autosave for lion? Since I do alot of illustrator and photoshop design I would love to have this feature.

    None that I've seen. It would do no good to upgrade your OS to Lion either since Adobe has opted to ignore Apple's Autosave/Versions function. Even in the CS6 apps. In order for any app to work with Autosave/Version in Lion, it has to be written to use those functions. It isn't just "there" all the time for all apps.

    Safari 5.0.5 in Snow Leopard allows cookies to be set despite preferences set to NEVER.  How do I correct this glitch?

    I just upgraded Safari to 5.1.5 and I'm having the same problem.  Despite the settings to BLOCK all cookies, cookies pile up like snow in a blizzard.  Ironically, the only site I've encountered whose cookies are actually blocked by Safari's preference setting is Apple's.
    I couldn't log in because my preferences were set to BLOCK.  Doesn't stop any other site from setting cookies, only Apple's so far.
    As for Lion - I've been told it's unstable.  I have already lost half my music files upgrading to Snow Leopard and
    would rather avoid going through that again after spending a great deal of time retreiving the loss.  I've decided to wait until all of Lion's glitches are resolved.
    Here is a link to the many pages discussing this cookie problem, and no solution in sight.  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3140339?start=150&tstart=0
    I assume you are on Lion.  And Safari's cookies preferences work as expected for you?

  • Snow Leopard Server with Lion Server for APNS

    Hello Everyone,
    I'm wanting to keep my Snow Leopard Server (Xserve) setup in place its working great, and cant afford to have any down time on the company network. What I would like to do is setup up an additional Mac Mini with Lion server to handel just the APNS. Is this possiable.
    I would be running all of the services, mail, OD, addressbook, caladar, on the Snow leopard server but want to use Lion Server to push out and manage some Lion clients, and iPhone with a second server has anyone done this, can this setup work?
    Thanks!
    Robert

    Hi Robert
    "Can you provide the basics for setup?"
    Apart from making sure DNS is configured correctly - as always - there's not much else you need to know. Server has to be configured as an OD Master. It does work with the default self-signed certificate although Apple do recommend you purchase one from a CA such as Verisign. I mention Verisign because it's trusted by the US Government. Once you've got your push notification certificate from Apple, enable the relevant option in the Server App. From there create the enrolment profile and key in the relevant url in your IOS device. The rest is fairly obvious. If DNS is not properly configured for your network this part probably will fail.
    "Can this all be completed in server admin, or the new server.app?"
    AFAIK Server Admin is not involved with APNS.
    "Did you just bind Lion Server too Snow Leopard Server, connect to another OD, or replica?"
    This was on a publicly accessible server that was its own OD Master. Provided things are configured correctly I can't see why it can't work with an environment that's behind NAT.
    "What do I setup after this?"
    Apart from making sure DNS is configured properly as well as the tip regarding trusted certificates I can't think of anything else? From what I've seen MDM in Lion Server is very good and what's more quick on the devices I tested. I only tested IOS devices and testing was done 'over the air.' You can still use the ICPU assuming you kept a copy of the download?
    HTH?

  • Snow Leopard Printing Woes - what worked for me

    I found many print problems posted EVERYWHERE from every printer manufacturer and model and many solutions and some worked for some people. None worked for me.
    I have a HP Laserjet 2100M, which is old, but is listed as compatible with SL. I cannot part with it, as it is a true laser printer, not a monochrome, which means when I need to colour separate say a blue and red document, it prints as solid, not grayscale. It has printed 44,820 pages for me over the years, with only laser cartridge replacement as an expense. As well, I cannot find anything but monochrome for a replacement.
    It worked on my old iMac G5 running Leopard, however, when I got my new iMac running Snow Leopard, I got "Printer Offline" message and it would not go online and while some solution ideas got it to print, sometimes, it was only good for one or two jobs and then would stop again, or it would say printing and nothing would print.
    Here is what worked for me:
    I disconnected my printer's usb and power supply, reset printer system.
    Went to Macintosh HD-Library-printers-PPDs-contents-resources and deleted all of the HP Drivers.
    I got my HP 2100 series driver from my old iMac and put that back in the resources folder and emptied trash.
    I shut down my computer.
    Replugged in power to printer.
    Started up computer.
    After fully launched, I connected my USB cable for the printer. I went to add printer and it came up right away and said new software update was available for my printer AND I SAID NO to updating. In selected my driver, and...
    My printer and I have reached a compromise!
    It still says offline, however, everything is printing anyway... this I can live with.
    I also found this link, which I will only try if I encounter any other disruptions
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&task Id=110&prodSeriesId=385457&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=385457&objectID=c018677 22
    At some point I printed a Self Test/Configuration page which has I/O Port Status as
    USB STATUS - not ready
    and Appletalk Status - Ready
    which is probably a good clue, however, I have been printing successfully for 15 hours and my hair is starting to grow back.

    The HP document appears to solve your issue. When your hair starts falling out again, use it.

  • My software update shows that no update is available for my machine.  It shows that it is running Snow Leopard 10.5.8, downloads for the 10.6.8 update will not open.  I am trying to get the mac store app so I can upgrade to Lion.

    I have not been successful in obtaining the latest version of Snow Leopard so I have the Mac Store app.  My computer shows that there are no updates available even though it only shows it running version 10..5.8.  I would like to upgrade to Lion.  When I download the .dmg updates from the web, they try unsuccessfully to open in Itunes or Quicktime.  I can not get them to run.  What is my next step?

    As noted, in order to update from OS X 10.5.x to OS X 10.6.x you will need to acquire the retail package for OS X 10.6; that initial jump can not be done via download.
    The current shipping retail version for OS X 10.6 is 10.6.3. Once you have installed that you can update it to OS X 10.6.8 via the Combo Update - running Software UPdate should be able to fetch that for you. You can also download it directly -
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
    Once you have installed that you can download and install the update for OS X 10.7 (Lion).

    My experience is that there are certain .ttf fonts that are great in Windows but not at all compatible with Mac, and they can cause issues with software that uses fonts.
    Case in point:
    I have two PCs and a MacBook. I have virtually Identical software suites on them all (Office, CS4, PSElements, Full sets of browsers). I also have a font library of around 5,000 fonts.
    Until last month, I just ran them all from the system fonts folder.  On the PCs, this lead to slooooooooooooowwwwwwwww running in all of CS4 and Word in Office especially when I had to change a font.
    On the Mac, it kept Fireworks from launching altogether. It would just crash at the splash screen.
    Since I work from Time Machine and ghost backups, reformatting a hard drive and reloading everything is just an afternoon for me. I reloaded all three systems, this time with Suitcase Fusion to manage my fonts. It comes with FontDoctor to ID any bad fonts before setting up a library from the full set.
    On the PCs it ID'd about 35 bad fonts and I chose to eliminate them. On the Mac, it ID'd about 135. Again, I did away with them.
    End result: Office 2007 and the 2010 Beta are lightning fast now by comparison, and on the Mac, Fireworks is fully functional.
    Since the only thing I changed, was the fonts (removing bad ones from each system and using a manager to activate them) I can safely say that fonts will have an impact on your software.
    If FontBook ID'd them as bad, dump them. They'll likely cause more trouble than they're worth if you don't.

  • Snow Leopard. Do I go for it?

    Could make thins better. I'm hearing reports from some Ableton users of much lower cpu strain.
    Or it could <edited by host> everything up.

    I'm specifically wondering whether Mainstage 2 can take advantage of Snow Leopard - so far, MS2 is just too cpu-intensive for me to use I am ultra-disappointed in it, but am hoping (nay, praying) that Snow Leopard and MS2 updates will improve the situation radically.

  • Snow Leopard Dashcode - dynamic data source for search via web API

    I'm making a dual product dashcode project, for safari and mobile safari. I have a dataSource that is a web API that takes a couple of variables to return results in JSON format. When the safari product launches, it's set up to ping the API with a set of parameters and populate an itemsList in my left sidebar. I have a search field above that itemsList. Now I can get the search field to:
    1. take the contents of the search field and construct a new URL from it.
    2. go out and ask for results from pinging the API via an XMLHTTPRequest.
    3. eval the contents and be ready to put it into the itemsList...
    the questions I have are:
    1. Where do I put the evaluated JSON results? DC.dataModel.dataSource.content ?
    2. What's the trigger to get my itemsList to reload the data?
    Here's the relevant search handler function code:
    function mySearchHandler(event)
    // Values you provide
    var searchFieldValue = document.getElementById("search"); // replace with ID of search field
    // Search field code
    searchFieldValue = searchFieldValue.value;
    // Values you provide
    // The feed to fetch
    var feedURL = "http://myurl.com/api.php?searchfortext="+ searchFieldValue + "&resultformat=json";
    var onloadHandler = function() { xmlLoaded(xmlRequest); }; // The function to call when the feed is loaded; currently calls the XMLHttpRequest load snippet
    // XMLHttpRequest setup code
    var xmlRequest = new XMLHttpRequest();
    xmlRequest.onload = onloadHandler;
    xmlRequest.open("GET", feedURL);
    xmlRequest.setRequestHeader("Cache-Control", "no-cache");
    xmlRequest.send(null);
    and then in my xmlLoaded function, I figured it would be something like this:
    function xmlLoaded(xmlRequest)
    if (xmlRequest.status == 200) {
    //' xmlRequest.responseText has what I want in it. Where do I put it? I thought it was here:
    DC.dataModel.dataSource.content = eval(xmlRequest.responseText);
    // or was it here? Neither of these seem to work.
    // DC.dataModel.itemsList.setContent(DC.dataModel.dataSource.content);
    // Then what, get the itemsList.object and tell it to reload itself... ? Doesn't work for me. :-
    document.getElementById("itemsList").object.reloadData();
    else {
    alert("Error fetching data: HTTP status " + xmlRequest.status);
    But... this doesn't work. I can evaluate DC.dataModel.dataSource.content and I can see my new search results sitting there. But I can't get my itemsList to refresh the display and load up what the web API gave it. How does this work in snow leopard dashcode?

    CrashPlan is a beast prone to ruining any other purpose on the server. I'd highly recommend moving it to it's own dedicated machine, like a mac mini. When I use CrashPlan that's my preference.
    You can find more information about mds by looking at it's man page, mds(8) and the man pages of it's related utility mdutil(1). Your mds database is likely corrupt. You have a few options. Wipe and reindex your metadata stores and/or turn indexing off on volumes that you don't need it.

  • Fix for System Preferences Keyboard Shortcuts crash

    This is not a question, but a solution to a problem that proved difficult to identify and fix for me and three Apple Support personnel, so I thought I should post it here in case others encounter the same issue. I spent a lot of time searching the web and Apple Discussions for this and related issues did not come up with any solutions.
    After migrating from Snow Leopard on 2009 MacBook Pro to Yosemite on a new MBP using the Migration Assistant, things went surprisingly smoothly for the most part, until I opened the Keyboard pane of System Preferences. Then, clicking on the Shortcuts tab immediately caused System Preferences to crash, reproducibly.
    Crash Reporter pointed loosely to a keyboard-related preference setting. But "com.apple.preference.keyboard" is the name of an OS process, not a .plist file. I searched the web to try to find out where Keyboard Shortcut settings are stored in Yosemite, and also for a possible way to reset the settings to default in Terminal (e.g. using the "defaults" routine), without success. (Apple Support was not happy that I had Terminal open when they shared my screen, and seemed never to have heard of this routine).
    Process:               System Preferences [948]
    Application Specific Information:
    objc_msgSend() selector name: retain
    com.apple.preference.keyboard v.14.0 (Keyboard)
    objc[948]: GC: forcing GC OFF because OBJC_DISABLE_GC is set
    Repairing disk permissions, rebooting in Safe Mode, zapping the PRAM, and trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences, some keyboard-related .plist files, and the system prefs and International prefs caches did not fix the problem. With Apple Support, we isolated the problem to my user account, as the same crash did not occur in a test account, or in another account migrated at the same time. Nevertheless, Apple's techs had me removing various menu items and programs also running in these accounts that I had deactivated (Sophos AntiVirus, Little Snitch, etc), and downloading and reinstalling Yosemite, which seemed unlikely to address the cause, given that my main user account was the only one affected.
    Apple never had me check 3rd party preference panes (which I should have thought to do earlier myself). Opening and closing an older version of Default App ((RCDefaultApp 2.0.1), a free 3rd party utility, in the Preferences pane, transiently solved the problem. However, it recurred on removing it, and was not fixed by installing the latest release of this preference pane, nor did removing three other 3rd party preferences panes (MacFUSE, a Citrix app, and Flash Player).
    Finally I went back to ~/Library/Preferences and looked for any files that had been modified around the time the problem transiently disappeared, and stumbled upon com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist. After viewing its contents with Property List Editor and finding this article, I thought that this file was likely the problem.
    I logged into my root account, verified that Shortcuts worked fine there, and that this file changed with a change in Shortcut settings, and (after renaming the offender to save it as a backup), replaced the file in my main user account with a copy of the one from the root account.
    I repaired permissions in the offending account, rebooted, and voilà - problem solved!
    NB If you are in a similar situation, before trying this fix (at your own risk!), I strongly advise backing up your computer first, and saving a copy of the presumed offending file in case you have to put it back because of unforeseen consequences. You do not need to enable and use the root account; instead you could log in to a new administrator account, or another user account, verify that Shortcuts works fine there (it would not be a bad idea to set up any user-defined App Shortcuts you want there); and copy the file to a shared folder.
    Then switch back into the offending account, go to your user Library/Preferences folder (~/Library/Preferences using Go To Folder in Finder), and replace com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist in that account with the one from the shared folder. You should then repair disk permissions afterwards and restart.
    If it works, Shortcuts should open fine. Be sure to check each category  in the left-hand panel of the Shortcuts panel (e.g. LaunchPad & Dock, Mission Control, etc.) for conflicts, and resolve those by disabling the offending duplicate key combination assignments (I had two, marked by yellow triangle alerts).

    Thanks, V.K., for your comments.

    not for me. it's both displayed and treated differently. I suspect what you are seeing is a byproduct of using a haxie such as Menu Master.
    no it's not. it's treated differently.
    In Leopard, Menu Master let me assign Command+Enter to Address Book > Edit Card. When I attempt the same using Keyboard Shortcuts, both Command+Return and Command+Enter are displayed as Command plus a "return arrow." After that, in Address Book, both Command+Return and Command+Enter invoke the "Edit Card" menu action.
    not for me.
    if you want to use those keys in the shortcuts use one of the many 3rd party app launchers. any one of them will let you do this: Qucisilver, Butler, Spark, Launchbar, ikeys, quickeys etc.
    I've been using QuicKeys since the beginning of time, and I have some experience with Butler and LaunchBar. They're useful for what they do. But, as far as I know, none add keyboard shortcuts that are displayed directly in the menus. That display feature is what makes Menu Master and Systems Prefs > Keyboard Shortcuts so attractive.
    that's because Menu Master is a haxie. none of the other programs mentioned are. you want such functionality you are going have to use a haxie. personally - i stay away from them as they destabilize the system.
    When I'm considering new shortcuts, I use KeyCue to display all current shortcuts in a single display. KeyCue now displays QuicKeys shortcuts in the same display, which is a big help.

  • Snow Leopard Strange behavior, best stategy for fixing?

    I have noticed recently a series of issues. It started when one of my computers starting getting Mobile Me sync errors. These seem to have gone away, but the computer that was having these errors now has several odd, but not, at this point critical problems.
    Whenever I open iTunes I get the license agreement, I click Agree and the next time I get the same agreement. If I remove or move anything in my Dock, the next time I launch it is returned to it's previous state with Icons back where they were. Sometimes I try to move a file and get the admin Log In requirement. Other times, no problem. It doesn't seem like much, but it appears like there might be something brewing. I have Run Techtools 6.0.3 and disk utility and it comes up clean. I have run disk permission, I have upgraded SL to 10.6.8 v 1.1. I have reinstalled SL from the disc and upgraded. I have upgraded iTunes.
    Still have the same problem. Is there any permissions fixes, such as changing a folder permission I can do without a clear wipe of my boot drive and a full install of all my apps and settings?
    If I do have to upgrade, is there any ideas as to the most efficient way to get all the apps and settings restored.
    Message was edited by: Mark Wheaton

    Since not getting a response I used disk Utility several times to repair permissions, Used TechTools 6.0.3 and found nothing wrong, used Diskwarrior 4.3 found numerous .plist corrupted files. No real way to tell it to just move these to a temp folder and see what happens, but I think there are corrupt hidden root level files that are causing my issues, so unless I hear suggestions, I am moving to a fresh install on another drive. I am keeping this drive until I knwo everything works right and then erase and use it for file storage.
    If any quicker fixes are out there I would love to hear them.

  • How long does it take to migrate mail data from snow leopard to lion. Waiting for hours

    OK, so here I thought I was solving a calendar sync problem by updating my OS from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3. Initially unable to load the mail app, however this seemed to work after taking out the "envelope index" file as suggested in this forum. New mail program loaded, but now stuck with rolling blue and white candy bar on a window inside the "Mail Upgrade" window stating "migrating data ...".Thinking I might simply have a lot of data I waited 5 (!!) hours,... No change. I went back to Finder and once again removed the envelope index file as well as all files with a .plist extension. Again started mail, again stuck with the screen "migrating data". So my question: Do I just have to wait (and then for how long? Days?), or do I have to tweek my MacBook Pro a little to be able to once again read and write e-mail?
    Thanks

    12 hours and did not finish. Still left with the message: migrating data. I cannot imagine what the program is doing.
    So I force quit mail and cleaned up everything I know to clean up: went to folder "~/library/Mail" and deleted everything I thought was not needed. Emptied the trash. Now, of course, I have a fair amount of mails in different folders that are stored in the mail program. But from a total data amount point of view this should be trivial.
    Restarted mail, get the screen: "Mail Message Import", click "Continue"
    Then program successfully imports 4563 messages in less than 2 minutes.
    Then - once again - rotating candy bar with message "migrating data ..."
    There is no way to see what is actually happening and no way to stop the process other than force quit.
    Help!!!

  • Snow Leopard Updated Epson Printer Driver for Epson R800 - poor colour !

    I just installed through software update the latest epson printer drivers and, then, deleted the Epson R800 from my printer list and added it back in (with the new printer driver). I did find a slightly different printer dialog box and found the setting of "presets" worked now (it did not previously).
    However, when I printed out of Adobe Lightroom 2.6, using a custom paper profile and no colour management, that the print was faded, the colours were washed out. The result was unacceptable. After a few attempts, I looked in the Library folder, printers, epson and found two folders labeled, "inkjet printer" and "inkjet printer2". I determined that "inkjetprinter2" was the new folder and deleted it and deleted/added in my Epson r800 (using "inkjetprinter" folder. The resulting print was perfect.
    So, my conclusion is that the new driver is not functioning as it should and I would warn users to be prepared for problems. Am I missing something here? Could I have done the updating of the printer driver and printer differently?

    You may need to recalibrate you monitor color settings.
    One of the things that changed from 10.5 to 10.6 was gamma; if you are using calibration from 10.5 or earlier, the gamma change will throw off print colors.
    Personally, on my last 2 epson printers (R300, RX685), I've configured to let the printer color manage, and used the Vivid setting.
    Have not had any off colors, etc.
