Snow Leopard 10.6.2 - Time Synch Issue

Hi,
I have an older MBP that was just rebuilt with Snow Leopard. Everything is working fine but a weird issue I ran into which is the system time. The date and time is set in System Preferences for CST and using an NTP server. The displayed time is correct. Here is what I ran into and my attempts at troubleshooting.
Details:
1.Entourage displays message 6 hours ahead
2.Tried Outlook through Citrix on the MBP and the message times are off by 6hrs as well
3.Tried Outlook through Citrix with a different AD acct. Problem still exists.
4.Tried Outlook through Citrix on another system and the message times are correct
5.Tried logging in as admin on the MBP and tried Outlook thru Citrix. Problem still exists.
6.Played with Date/Time settings in System Preferences by changing zones and going back to CST
7.In Terminal, the time displayed after running DATE is off by 6hrs and shows it using UTC
8.I modified the NTP.conf file to use tick.usno.navy.mil and still see the time off running DATE in Terminal
9. Manually set the time. No success.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what your trouble is, but you might try these ntp command to get more info about time. I am guessing that ntp is fine, but that Outlook and Entourage are looking somewhere strange for the timezone information. I am using the ntp pool to get time...

What do you mean by "events to update"? Do you mean invites to new events or changes to existing invites?
Troubleshooting:
1. Your profile indicates you are running 10.6.7, 10.6.8 is the current version Apple > Software update.
2. First make an iCal backup: Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal 1 at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
3. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
3. Launch iCal and test.

Can I restore to Snow Leopard from Lion using time machine?

Can I restore to Snow Leopard from Lion using time machine? I did not make a new partition on my external HD. My reason for doing this is to import data from Quicken 2007 to Quicken Essentials and then upgrade back to Lion. Can I restart and hold down the "OPTION" key upon start up that will take me to Apple Recovery HD and recover from time machine? I'm a noob at these sort of things. I appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard using a different time machine disk

Hello.
I have just purchased a new 2011 iMac which has got OSX Lion (10.7.2) installed on it. I have set up all my basic data on it. And I have set up 3 administrator user accounts on it to be shared between me, my dad and my wife.
I also own a 2010 Mac Mini with HDMI connected to my television which has the Latest Snow Leopard OSX installed in it. It has only a single user - me.
So that leads to the following questions:
1) Is it possible to take a time machine backup of the new iMac which has Lion and use it via the migration assistant on the Mac Mini (Snow leopard) to upgrade the mac mini to Lion and have all my settings on the iMac on the mac mini?
2) Will there be any compatibility issues of transferring from iMac to Mac Mini?
3) Will i get my 3 administrator user setup on the mac mini as well in case above is possible?

Snow Leopard 10.6.8 automatic sleep issues

Hey,
I have a 27" Apple iMac with an i5 processor and 8GB of RAM running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have had it for about a year and a half and for the first 15 months or so it was perfect. However in the last few months I have been having problems with automatic sleep.
When the computer was working correctly if I had set the display to sleep at 5 minutes and the computer to sleep at 15 minutes in energy saver, then if the Mac was idle it would sleep at these times. If however I was say printing a lot of pages or downloading a large file or ripping a DVD, then the computer would not sleep even if the 15 minutes had elapsed but once it had completed its task and 15 minutes had passed, it would sleep. This was great if I was leaving home or going to work as I could rely on my Mac to finish its task and then sleep and so not waste electricity.
So when the problems started, first my Mac would never sleep automatically and this was for a while fixable by simply clicking "restore defaults" in the energy saver settings. Then no matter what it would never sleep unless I set it to sleep manually and now after trying a solution from Apple care (restoring disc permissions in disc utility), the Mac sleeps once the prescribed time has elapsed no matter what I am doing be it listening to iTunes, downloading a file and so on.
In other user accounts this problem also abounds and so doesn't appear to be related to third party software. On the recommendation of an Apple care guy I reinstalled Snow Leopard from disc (the lesser install that does not erase the hard-drive and takes about 45 minutes) and after this the sleep function was working properly. However as soon as I updated the Mac to bring it up to date after the re-install, the problem started again. This gives me the impression that some update from a few months ago is causing this issue.
According to the Apple guy, there is no known solution for this and he tried to sell me a load of nonsense about using third party freeware like caffeine and please sleep to solve the problem. However these solutions are useless unless you are around to ultimately put your Mac to sleep manually and/or turn on/off the third-party software.
This may not seem like a big issue, but when I have my Mac perform many tasks while I am not present, if it stays on indefinitely afterwards, then it is really wasting a lot of electricity.
Has anyone else had this or a similar issue and found a solution? I know I could upgrade to Lion and try that, but if that doesn't work then I will have wasted €24, plus I was hoping to wait until as many of the kinks had been worked out of Lion via patches before updating.
Has anyone had any experience with trying to get Apple to replace a computer that is still under Apple Care warranty over a year after purchase as if it continues, my Mac has lost a LOT of its functionality for what I need it to do and I am no longer happy with it.

Your post is pretty lengthy and I have to admit I didn't read it all. Please try restarting in Safe Mode, if that doesn't work please do both a SMC and PRAM reset. These may take 2-3 attempts.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

HP2015D & Airport Dual Extreme on Snow Leopard drops all the time

I have a HP2015D laserjet (driver 16.1) connected by USB to an Airport Dual Extreme (v7.4.2) running Snow Leopard 1.6.2. All drivers and software are up-to-date. This printer used to drop very occasionally on Leopard, but on Snow Leopard it drops every 30 minutes or so, if not sooner. I have to restart the printer. There are 3 MacBooks on this network. Everyone can see the printer but can't print when it drops. Every time Apple upgrades the HP printer drivers, the dropping just gets worse. In the past this has been an Airport driver issue. Any ideas or comments as there is no sense in replacing the printer if it is Airport.

Is it likely that my Airport base station (which is probably over 5 years old) has just come to the end of its life cycle? I'd happily buy the new Extreme base station, but I'm concerned that I'll come across the same problems.
Although there is really no way to predict if new equipment will completely resolve the problem, there is a good chance that it will. Electronics, especially those that are meant to operate 24/7, typically have a service "life" of 3-5 years. Of course, there are cases that would support less or more time than that.
If you have already exhausted things like looking/resolving for Wi-Fi interference, resetting the device, etc, you may only have the option available: replace your equipment.
As far as recommendations, my suggestion is to first jot down all of your networking requirements. Examples would be: ADSL/DSL/cable/Satellite-capable? Wired, wireless, or both clients? NAT? DHCP? File/Print server? Capable of being extended? 802.11 radio modes supported? Encryption standards supported? Does it support UPnP? VoIP? etc.
Once you come up with a comprehensive list, then check out with manufacturers provide products that meet most (or all) of them. This should help you decide.

Latest Snow Leopard and "Save" or "Save" as issue: Freehand quits

I've just installed the latest security update for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on my MacPro 2008. It seems that I can't save my Freehand files anymore, Freehand quits every time. Do you have similar issues?

I upgraded my imac to snow leopard and now every time I click the mouse I get the spinning wheel of death

One morning a week ago I got the "White Screen Of Death" and my desktop imac wouldn't load so mac support told me I had to erase my history and upload imac again. We went through every senario to get it to work to no avai. I had a snow leopard disc so I uploaded that as well. In the last few days I click on my mouse and I get the "Spinning Ball Of Death" most every time I click. It lasts for about 5 - 20 seconds every time. I am not a "techie" at all. Is there any way to stop this. I am not sure what could be causing this. I erased my browers cache on Safari and that didn't help. I also turned the comp. off then back on and that didn't work either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Step by step how to's? I am not totally ignorant in computer speak but not an expert by any means. Thanks!

Freezing/crash of iMac under Snow Leopard when backup with Time Machine

Hi!
The backup on my external hard drive with Time Machine cannot be completed.
After few ten Go out of 360Go the backup stops suddenly and the computer freezes/crashes.
I have got an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 − 64 bit. The external hard drive is a LaCie 500Go.
Also, backups for another Apple computer can be done with this LaCie external drive. So, it is not the cause of the freezing/crash of the iMac.
I tried to solve this problem applying the following steps:
1- I started with the installation disk.
2- I repaired the internal iMac drive and the permissions with the Disk Utilities soft on the installation disk. All was OK.
3- The LaCie drive was erased, formatted again with one GUID partition (500Go) and the disk verified. All was OK.
4- I re-install the OS with the installation disk -> 10.6 Snow Leopard
5- Updates to 10.6.8, etc… security update 2012-004 and the 13th Java update to v1.6.
6- I deleted in the folder /Library/Preferences the file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
7- I deleted the file com.apple.finder.plist in the administrator account Preferences folder.
8- The iMac was shutdowned as well as the external LaCie drive.
9- I restarted and changed the name of the external LaCie drive.
10- I choose the LaCie backup drive with Preferences System > Time Machine with right exclusions.
Unfortunately, the problem remained and the backup was again unsuccessful followed by another freezing/crash of the iMac.
So how to solve this problem?

I have a brand new Macbook Pro with Lion preinstalled. I haven't even turned it on yet. I desperately need Snow Leopard because my music software is not Lion compatible yet. I also have a Time Machine backup from my old Macbook that is currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. How can I get Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro? Also, will Time Machine replace the applications on the new Macbook Pro with the older versions I have in the backup or how exactly does that work? I've been staring at the box for 2 days now worried I won't be able to use any of my software. PLEASE HELP ME!

It depends on the build of your machine; normally, no Mac can ever boot from a system older than what it came with. However, there are exceptions: right around the time the new OS is released, there may be some machines which will be able to run both OS's. Here is some information on software builds:

Snow Leopard Fresh Install With Time Machine Restore

Alright so I have been having problems with my MacBook. For the last few months it has been really slow and laggy. I have tried almost everything to speed it up. I have run anti-virus software, I have deleted any Apps that I thought could have caused the problem. After all that I still can not figure out what is causing it to be so slow. So I decided a fresh install would be the way to go, only I have a few concerns. The first was my music and movies, I didn't want to loose those so I backed them up to an external harddrive that has 2 partitions (one for files the other for Time Machine). So thats not a concern any more. My next concern was for Final Cut Studio. I have it on my MacBook, but I do not do much editing on it because I use my Mac Pro for that. But I still need it on my MacBook for when I'm out of my office and need to work on something. I do not currently have the installation disk for Final Cut Studio (my boss does so I could get it if I really need it) and I'd really also like to not have to go through the 8 and a half hour installation of it again. So would it be possible to restore the entire Final Cut Studio through Time Machine after a clean install? (I would use an old backup from before it got slow so that it wouldn't restore what ever is messing it up) I have read on some forums that you can not restore the Pro Apps such as Final Cut Studio and Aperture... etc., but on other I have read that you can. If this is possible can some one walk me through the process so that I don't have to reinstall it all? Much Thanks if you can!

Most likely, your only choices are a full restore of your entire system from an earlier date; or reinstalling those apps with their original installers. Unless you know what and where all the other things those installers put on your system are, you'll have pieces missing, and the apps won't work properly, if at all. Worse, they may appear to be fine at first; you may not notice problems for a while.

Depending on how that was done, you should be able to restore the entire iTunes folder.
As for anti-virus I had Norton back when I first tried to figure out what was wrong but since then the subscription has run out and I have been using iAnti-Virus (it was CNet's top choice for mac)
Both of those are notorious for causing all sorts of problems with Macs. Norton, in particular, is almost impossible to remove entirely, as it puts all sorts of things in all sorts of places, and a number of background jobs that interfere with your Mac if you don't exterminate them. There are similar reports about iAnti-Virus, too. Search the +Snow Leopard+ forum for them -- you'll see what I mean.
Many of us run no anti-virus software at all (again, there aren't any for OSX, although there are some Trojans). For those folks worried about passing PC viruses among their PC friends, the (free) ClamXav is most often recommended in these forums, for being as effective as any others, but without much negative impact. Take the time to be sure you've really eliminated all the leftovers, or don't inadvertently restore them -- they may very well be part of your problems.
As for deleting Apps if it had an uninstaller I used it but if not then I used AppCleaner.
That's good for most of them, but as I understand it, won't get all the Norton stuff. I don't know if it will get all the iAnti-Virus pieces.

You might want to try that. Download the free OnyX app from: http://www.titanium.free.fr/index_us.html
Click the Cleaning icon in the Toolbar, and each of the tabs it shows (I omit the +Form Values+ and Cookies items in the Internet section, and some of the log; you may want to select or omit others).

That may be worthwhile. Use the Console app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
When it starts, click +Show Log List+ in the toolbar, then navigate in the sidebar that opens up to your system.log and select it. If it's grayed out and you can't select it, the account you're using doesn't have permission to view them. Sign on with an Admin account.
That will open the current log at the end (bottom). Scroll upwards to view more of it. Don't be alarmed -- most of what you see there is gibberish to us mere mortals!
What you're looking for is anything dire-sounding, such as +*failed, exited with code, exited abnormally, I/O error,+* and, especially, +*throttled respawn,+* or anything repeated over and over.
If you see anything like that, copy and post a reasonable amount of it here.

Snow leopard to lion external time machine backup

I am starting app programming and I need to download Xcode but my operating system which is OS X 10.6.8 (snow leopard) isn't compatible with it. OS X 10.7.4 (Lion) or higher is required to download Xcode 4 so I obviously want to upgrade to that. I have an external hard drive connected to time machine and I was wondering if it will be compatible with lion since it's currently formatted to snow leopard. if it will be harmed by just plain old updating my Mac, what can I do to keep it safe? thanks!

Your Time Machine drive is not formatted to a version of OS X. If it works with Snow Leopard then it works with Lion and Mountain Lion. Updating won't affect it. In fact, just disconnect it from your computer before you upgrade.
If your computer can run Mountain Lion, then upgrade to it. Only bother with Lion if your model cannot run Mountain Lion.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

I just upgraded to Lion and want to go back to Snow Leopard ..I have time machine..is there a way?

I just upgraded to Lion and Quicken will not work and not sure if I want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a timemachine and would like to know if someone could help to either get quicken working or how I can get back to snow leopard?

Did you check the Quicken website before upgrading your Mac? It specifically says that Quicken will not work on Lion.

Just reinstall Snow Leopard. Should work fine. You can downgrade to previous software as long as the Mac supports the earlier version. If it previously had Snow Leopard, then re-installing is fine.
However!!! If you have a newer computer that was "born with" Lion, you cannot downgrade, as the firmware will not be compatible.

Is it possible to have Leopard and Snow Leopard at the same time?

If you have an Imac with an external USB HD, can you have Leopard on the HD of the iMac and install a fresh copy of SL on the HD? Would it work?

Thanks for asking, you reminded me of two things to keep in mind. Let's say you have two drives, let's call them SL and Leo. If you boot with SL all your preferences and settings are on the SL drive and if you boot with Leo, they are on your Leo drive. There's no crossover and nothing dangerous to worry about.
There are, however, two little things to think about. a) by default, when you boot with Leo your files will save to your Leo account folder and when you boot with SL they'll default to your SL account folder. This can get confusing. There are several solutions but the easy one, and the one I used, is to use DefaultFolder and set default save folders so that the file selector automatically chose my SL folder to save into.
The other issue involves Spotlight. When you switch from one OS to the other, Spotlight will try to reindex both drives. This isn't dangerous but it does bog down a slower computer. My solution was to use the Spotlight preference in Leopard and turn indexing off completely by making both drives private.

13" Macbook (black), Snow Leopard, Boot Camp, Windows 7 display issue

OK I don't know where to post this. I couldn't find an appropriate forum under Boot Camp (nothing for display). Apologies if this is the wrong forum.
I am attempting to run Windows 7 using Boot Camp. Here is the behavior:
Booting Windows 7 without any monitor plugged in works fine.
Booting with an external monitor plugged in, I get the display on the external monitor. Now when I unplug the external monitor, the LCD display backlight is off and is completely dim. I had to reboot it in order for the LCD display to work again.
This is not a macbook display issue. But it has to do something with the way Windows 7, BootCamp are compatible with a macbook. Anyone seen this or know what the fix is?

I can not get my Win 7 (32) os to see my Mac 10.6 partition. Is there something I need to set or turn on to get this to work?
As for your problem, perhaps Windows is not seeing the FireWire bus?
