Snow Leopard 10.6.3 freezing during installation? Please help!

I have a 13" Macbook with Mac OS X 10.4.11 and am trying to install Snow Leopard 10.6.3 (which I bought from the Apple store).  I am having trouble with the installation, as it freezes every time I get to a certain point in the "Installing" screen. It was freezing around the 40 min. mark, and so I tried the various options that the installation CD gave me. Such as going into disk utility and doing the "first aid" stuff where everything seemed to check out fine.  None of that helped, and it kept freezing at the same point, sometimes going all the way to a screen that says, "Install Failed, the installer could not copy the necessary support files."  I double checked all of the system requirements, and I originially didn't have enough memory, but freed up space for the installation.
I then tried the last option on the installer troubleshooting by backing up my files on an external hard drive and then erasing the memory through disk utility.  Now I can't get back onto my original computer drive when selecting a startup disk, as it only lets me see the installation CD to select. Erasing didn't help, except that now it freezes at 29 minutes instead of 40. I can't even eject my CD, I'm assuming since there is nothing else for my computer to run on.  I'm not a genius with computers, but I was simply following the instructions that came with my software.  Now I can't even get back to those instructions, since they were only available on my previous hard drive, and not in the actual disk packaging (which seems kind of silly). I'm planning on calling Apple for support, hoping that I can get free support since I only bought this software a few days ago. However, any help in the meantime would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • Fresh snow leopard install and still same problem. Please help :(

    hello.
    After 10.6.3 update....
I had issues with trackpad and keyboard freezing on my early 2008 macbook pro.
I have tried to reset pram, nvram, smc, onyx maintance everything i could think of.
So i decided to wipe hard drive clean and do fresh install. Everything was working fine until i applied 10.6.3 update.
Is there any fix for this yet ?
It still doesnt work good even with fresh install of snow leopard and 10.6.3 update.
    Thank you

I've read a lot on the Internet about alien UFO crashes too, but that doesn't mean it is a good idea to take them at face value.
If something doesnt work after clean install then thats updates issue.
Not necessarily, at least if you mean the OS update itself. Do a little research. This same argument pops up after every OS update. There are no exceptions -- every one of them has been blamed for all manner of post-update problem, linked to each of several different models, & everything else you have read on the Internet about this one. Users also frequently use the "clean install" argument in support of these theories that the update, whichever one it happens to be, is the only possible culprit.
The problem is these theories rarely prove to have any merit at all, & like with most such things, even when there is some merit to them, the complete explanation is more complicated. For instance, some users do a perfectly executed clean install & then ruin it by reintroducing the same bit of software that was the real problem in the first place. Some users don't know what a clean install is & mistakenly say they did one. Some eventually find & eliminate a different cause for their particular problems but never report that. Sometimes coincidence is involved -- with millions of users upgrading the chances that in some cases it is not are slim to none.
Basically, it is like anything else on the Internet. You can find something to support anything imaginable because people can imagine anything & too many of them ignore anything that doesn't support that or just don't make the effort to look for it in the first place.

    Can you help please?

run the msi manually for which the error (ERROR: MsiConfigureProductEx failed with error: 1612) occurred (refer installer log ). MSI will prompt a browse dialog with message like it failed to locate, there you need to browse to point to msi itself. Once the MSI is installed successfully, re-run the installer.

  • Installing Leopard freezes during installation..

    hi.
im updating my old tiger powermac to leopard and its freezing during installation..
i cant take the disc out and try the original discs as it seems like it needs the disc to boot from.
ive held down the space bar but it doesnt eject.
    any ideas?
    thanks

    hi.
i have both discs (leopard and snow leopard as retail)...
at the moment it wont start in safe mode... it just doesnt startup and until i take my finger off shift it wont go anywhere other than the white apple screen.
i have tried dragging the install disc using disc utility to the macHD and erase the destination... now all it has done is create a clone of the install disc on the internal HD.
I put my other mac in target disc mode with the snow leopard disc in and tried to use startup disc to restart from it but it didnt show up as available... so im stuck...
i cant eject the disc, its not installing properly and my internal HD isnt bootable...
    any ideas?

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.4 freezes

For some unknown reason Snow Leopard 10.6.4 freezes randomly. It does not happen too often, but when it does the only way out seems to be to shut down the computer and start it up again.
The only thing it shows is a spinning wheel (not the BBOD) in the center of the screen, but low (just above the dock).
Thinking it might be the HDD starting to have issues, I just replaced it with a brand new one. So the MB now has a clean install (Snow Leopard) that is completely updated (10.6.4, then used migration assistant to move files and settings before swapping it with the old HDD. Everything works fine apart from the freeze).
But the freeze happened again yesterday, and I can not find any other mention of things that could potentially cause this problem.
Any ideas as to the potential source of the problem, how to check, and good suggestions for further actions to avoid a repeat?
    Thanks.

The problem is this issue did not exist with the last version of Virusbarrier. The newest version contains many additional services, like Anti-Phishing, Anti-Spyware, a Firewall in addition to their more traditional "Real Time scanning" for viruses. The pull-down menu allows you to disable these all, one by one. So I have disabled most of the "non-traditional" VirusBarrier features to see which ones are causing the problem. I suspect it is the spyware scanner that's causing the problem.
    We'll see.
Nothing like paying for antivirus/antispyware SW and it's the one causing the problem!

You either have to restore the Snow Leopard backup you made prior to installing Mavericks, or create a separate Snow Leopard partition to boot to in order to run your older PowerPC applications.
Either that, or upgrade the apps which won't run in Mavericks to newer versions that do.

my itunes will not open at all. it occasionally will open but when i plug my iphone into it the program freezes and crashes. please help as soon as possible

i think i might have a solution... i have windows vista and after i installed to latest itunes update everytime i tried to open it it would freeze. I tried everything, including uninstalling itunes and all of its components and reinstalled it numerous times. So i went to the itunes folder in my folders, not on itunes, and i deleted my itunes library and playlists. After that it worked just fine, all of my music was deleted but luckily i had my files saved elsewhere.
I hope this helped! I know its frustrating and APPLE/ITUNES NEED TO FIX THE PROBLEM!!!!

My Hotmail no longer works with Safari v. 5.0.6 and my Imac Leopard operating system 10.5.8.  Please help me with any suggestions on what to do.  Thank you.  I cannot find any new downloads for Safari that work with Leopard.  The newest ones only work with Lion.  My Firefox browser still works though but I would rather use Safari and cannot access any e-mails or send any e-mails via Safari.  This happened about 3 weeks ago and I thought it was just a glitch on Hotmail's site.  Now I realize Hotmail must have released an update that no longer works with Leopard 10.5.8.  PLEASE HELP ME!!!!  Thanks to anyone and everyone who reads this and attempts to help me.  I do not know what to do....

    Hi Sue,
What exactly happens when trying Safari?
They did change it to Outlook recently, but while not pretty, I can access mine with Safari 4.0 still...
You can also set it up in Mail so you don't need a browser at all if you want.

  • Trouble downloading Snow Leopard sw updates- system crashes during update installs. I'm only trying to get to the AppStore to download

I've upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard... fine.
Installing the system updates (the AppStore isn't in the Snow Leopard install, just available via a system update)
The updates appear to have downloaded ok, then the system restarts to install, and .... CRASH. All's I'm trying to do is legally get to Lion.
I have a 15" Macbook Pro, 2gb ram, dual core Intel, 120gb drive.
Should I re-install Snow Leopard, or anyone have any good ideas?  I suppose it could even be a hardware problem of some sort, but the system seeems stable unless I try to do the sw updates.
    Please help!
    Thanks all!

dual core Intel   /    All's I'm trying to do is legally get to Lion.
    Lion requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
From here > Apple - OS X Lion - Technical specifications
Click your Apple icon top left corner of your screen then from the drop down menu click: About This Mac
If it doesn't say:  Intel Core 2 Duo
Then you can't upgrade the Mac to Lion.

  • Itunes 9.02, Snow Leopard and iMac 24 - FREEZE UP!

I have 4 mac machines in the home and this problem is only affecting the iMac 24. From reading multiple forums, I can safely say that I am not the only one. iTunes freezes sort of randomly during playback, store browsing, podcast etc...
The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. After I reboot my local Disk needs to be repaired with Disk Utility as the directory counts do not match. I have used the install DVD to repair my main disk over 10 times now.
I have tried all the suggestions on the forums including:
    removing plugins
    Re-installing iTunes (multiple times)
    Rebuilding library
    removing SyncServices directory
    disabling genius and home sharing
    and more
This problem seems to have started after the installation of iTunes 9
I am usually a very happy Apple customer but this has been quite the frustrating experience. Can someone acknowledge this issue at Apple so that I can rest assured that a patch will fix this at some point?
I am out of ideas and search engines to look for answers. Any feedback on this thread is appreciated.

    I am reporting exact same problem on iMac 24" (3.06GHz/Mac OS X 10.6.2/iTunes 9.0.2).
iTunes randomly freezes, leaving only the spinning beach ball. Sometimes, if left alone for several minutes, it'll report "iTunes library files cannot be saved (-50)" error. Alas, clicking "OK" to dismiss the dialog window only results in the same message popping up again and again. In all cases of iTunes' freezing and the ensuing beach ball, the Dock seems to go awry, too. The application switcher (command-tab) won't show and clicking on the dock will only freeze it; But, the menubar clock somehow still runs.
After a hard restart, which I am so weary of after having done so many during the last couple of months, iTunes always goes through the long "Checking iTunes library" process before starting up again.
I can't seem to pinpoint the pattern for these freezes.
For now, I have disconnected a Western Digital My Studio II external hard drive used for Time Machine per some online discussion about the lack of Snow Leopard support for that drive by Western Digital and have tossed iTunes' preference files. I'm not ready to rebuild the library file just yet.
At any rate, I hope someone can give us a clear answer. Thank you.

  • MacBook Pro w/Snow Leopard stuck on Blue Screen during Reboot

    Hello:
I posted this on other forums without any responses, so hopefully, I can get some help here.
On Sunday, I emptied my cache on Safari and my computer stayed frozen for a few minutes. I decided to re-boot, but every time I do so, it goes from the gray Apple screen to a blue screen and stops right there. I don't get the spinning wheel, but rather the black arrow that I can move about the blue screen, but nothing else. Here's what I've tried with no success.
    1. Re-booting via Safe Mode (Command-Shift). Instead of freezing on the blue screen, it asks for my password and after a few seconds it stops on the Snow Leopard Pink/Black Stars background. Same result, only the background is different
    2. Resetting PRAM - No luck
    3. Re-booting with the Snow Leopard DVD and using Disk Utility. I follow the necessary steps online. No luck
Any help with resolving the problem would be appreciated. Thanks!

As a point of reference, here is a sample of the errors that were discovered during repair disk.
    Volume file Count
    569070 instead of 569075
    Volume Directory Count
    175474 instead of 175469
During "Repair Disk Permissions" I get this message:
Warning SUID file "System/Library/Core...has been modified on will not be replaced

  • Help! Repeating sequence of Snow Leopard woes! Boot freezes, airport errors

Okay. I seem to be experiencing a cocktail of problems on my MacBook Pro that are similar to those individually reported in other threads. Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I've searched and haven't so far found a thread that replicates all my problems exactly and in the same way …
    So here goes.
I am on my 3rd install of Snow Leopard. First time I updated from Leopard; second time I erased and installed, then restored from Time Machine; third (most recent) time I erased and installed and have not restored anything except my files from Time Machine.
    I'm on a new MBP (2.8GHz, 4GB memory, bought new in Aug/Sept)
Each time I've reinstalled, I've experienced a few trouble-free days in which I think: Ah! Finally fixed it. Then the problems start to creep back in. They are:
    1. airport starts to turn itself off. Its icon will be there in the bar, but as an empty triangle. Turning it on will not work (nor will going into preferences, edit locations solution proposed elsewhere). This initially only ever happens when booted from cold. A simple restart will solve the problem.
    2. airport icon disappears from bar altogether. Again, only when booted from cold. But sometimes 2-3 restarts required before it will return.
    3. system starts to hang halfway through booting from cold or occasionally on a warm restart. It will do the chime, get to the logo and progress indicator, then the indicator will freeze after a short while of spinning and there it will stay. Power off and restart required to get past this stage.
    4. (Haven't yet reached this stage on my current reinstall, but happened on the others) After repeated instances of (3) which get more and more frequent, bootup will progress to a blue screen with a progress indicator. Periodically, this screen will refresh and the shade of blue will change; but the system will never get past this stage, not even on a Safe mode startup.
Once I reach stage 4, I cannot get back into my Mac, and will have to use the disc to reinstall. And the cycle returns to step 1.
As you can imagine, I'm getting a little tired of this process. That Apple startup chime is getting mighty tiresome. Is anybody experiencing this grim Sisyphean torment, or is it just me?

Download and run Rember which does more extensive testing. I don't use wifi, so have nothing to say WRT your airport issues. Have a bootable backup/clone? If so, boot with it and see if the problem's still there. It's possible that there's something wrong with the hardware, even though it passes the AHT tests, and you might talk to AppleCare.

  • MacBook Pro freezes during installation of 10.6.8 supplement

Ran Software Update to install the 10.6.8 supplemental update on my 15 inch MacBook Pro (late 2006), which already had 10.6.8 installed (and the 2 GB factory RAM).
After restart, the computer hung at the gray screen with apple logo and spinning cog.
After at least 15 minutes - probably more, maybe as long as 30 minutes - I forced shut down with the power button, then powered up.  Same result.  Tried a couple of times more, same result.
A few days ago, I ran most of Tech Tool Pro's diagnostics and optimizations successfully, including rebuilding directories, de-fragmenting files, optimizing disk space, repairing permissions, doing the full suite of regular tests except for disk scan.  No problems.  The computer has been running fine.
    Any ideas?

Update:  Booted into single-user mode, checked disk via fsck -f (had to force it), no problems found.
Booted with Snow Leopard installer CD and ran Disk Utlity - repaired permissions and repaired disk.  No problems found.  'Macintosh HD appears to be OK'.
Tried booting again - still hanging.  Will let it go longer this time, but I'm not hearing any disk activity...
