Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Combo update problem

I have an older Black MacBook from 2008 (4,1).  I was always on 10.6.6 as I only really did use this machine for live on stage performance and it has been rocksolid.  I decided to to apply the 10.6.8 combo update finally.  Everything went smooth but then I got a few messages saying that extensions weren't installed properly.  I googled up the issue and I keep seeing the common response of "Uninstall Vuze" of other torrent applications.  But I have never had any of those installed on this machine.  I then saw a different answer that instructed me to repair disk permissions, restart and apply the combo update again.
This did extuinguish 3 of the error messages I saw but I still have 1 extension error hanging around which is a "N-Mon.kext" extension error.  What does this affect?  Will my laptop be unstable on stage now?
I have no idea how to get rid of this and I decided to finally post after searching for an answer all over the web and in the these forums.  I want to avoid reinstallation of everything because I have so many programs and plugins on this machine.

This may help:

I am operating a 2009 desktop Mac OsX 10.5.8. How do I upgrade to a current operating system? Do I need to purchase Snow Leopard? I have clicked update my software but see now changes.

You first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. In order to upgrade to Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks you first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. Your model should be able to run Mavericks which you can download for free.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Remember to do the following before starting the upgrade process:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Restart the computer from the Apple menu.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • My new macbook pro (Mountain Lion) will not log into my 1and1 server to connect to my e mail. My snow leopard macbook does not have this problem - Apple support say it is a 1and1 problem! do I have to wait for an update of Mountain Lion?

My new macbook pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.1) will not log into my 1and1 outgoing mail server. ( It will receive mail - but does not send)My old Snow Leopard macbook does not have the same problem ( server settings etc. are identical) . Apple Support say its a 1and1 problem , 1and1 say it is an operating System prob - I have tried changing port numbers.

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

  • SmoothCam: FCP7 or Snow Leopard or QTX or combo to blame?

I have done several searches on the topic but It is not clear as to the specific root of the jitter issue - I read several users with OS 10.5+ are OK with FCP7 so it appears that the problem is SL/QTX??? Does SmoothCam in FCP6 work OK with SL? My reason for the concern is that I may soon be updating from a PPC G5 to a new MacPro that would obviously come with Snow Leopard. I am considering running it on OS 10.5.8 with FCP6 (my current combo) to retain SmoothCam. I have no need/want to upgrade to FCP7.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

If there is a jitter issue in Smoothcam on FCP 7 there will be a jitter issue with Smoothcam on FCP 6. There was no real change in the smoothcam filter's code from 6 to 7. It is important to know that if you plan on getting a new MacPro to replace your ageing G5 Quad core you will not be able to take full advantage of the MacPro multithreading & multicore perfomance enhancements with out FCP 7. Since the new Final Cut Studio is designed to take full advantage of the Intel's Quadcore performance in the Lastest MacPro's that Final Cut Studio 2 is not. Although FCS 2 is designed to be capatable with the Intel Processors it does not take full advantage of the Intels perfromance enhancements.

  • I got a refurbished macbook air yesterday, and it dosent have the latest os x software. i think it has snow leopard. when i clicked software update it says "software is up to date" so i could only get os x lion for 30$. please, help me.

I got a refurbished mac yesterday, and it disent have the latest osxlion software, and i think it has snow leopard. When i clicked software update it says my software was up to date. Please help me get it freee, because i was supposed to.

Apple includes Lion with its refurbished products. What you bought was a used computer. The best course of action is to try to get your money back and buy a factory-certified refurbished computer. Otherwise, you are likely buying someone else's problem.

  • I can't find the mac app store on my imac. i am running snow leopard, and i have run "update software" several times. what's up?

I am trying to upgrade to Lion. I need to go through Mac App store to buy it. I need to get the Mac App store icon in my dock. I have run Update Software several times, trying to get the Mac App store onto my iMac, but with no luck. It doesn't show up in the dock, it doesn't show up in Finder under Applications, and it doesn't show up when I search in Searchlight for App Store, Store, Mac App Store, etc. What am I doing wrong?

    I am running snow leopard
    James....
You arne't necessarily doing anything wrong.
Install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
That should reinstall the App Store for you.
Restart your Mac after the combo is finished installing.
You should see the App Store icon in the Dock and be able to access from your Apple menu also.
Make sure your Mac meet's Lion's requirements

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.2 Security Update 2010-001

I had a MacBook Pro 15" 2006 , core duo 2GHz 100GB with Snow Leopard working fine, until I a) repaired permissions, b) installed single item "Security Update 2010-001" via Software Update c) restarted when I was told "you need to restart to finish this upgrade", restart later I chose to restart now. The MBP1,1 has blocked at a flashing Apple/'No-Entry/'? folder' grey/gray screen.
I have read http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1892?viewlocale=en_US , I have tried advanced repair techniques, PRAM, safeboot, X etc to as yet no avail.
I urge caution before applying this update on mission critical systems, I have read widely and many people have had no problems with Security Update 2010-001, but some have. I am an experienced Apple user - this is an anomaly, hopefully very rare. any other suggestions rather than total system restore?

    .... BUT NO ...
I'm still having the problem, but it's getting better and I'm not blaming the Security Update any longer.
I've been rebooting into Safe Mode (Shift while Switch-on) and investigating Library/Startup Items and User Login Items.
I don't know whether it's 10.6.2 or the Security Update, but one of them seems to have made the machine sensitive to the fact (my fault) that I had various old and presumably not-compatible items in Startup. Also, some of the software/drivers/plugins you find in Preferences (eg my Mouse driver, my pen tablet driver) seemed to be outdated. I've now given my collection of old software a bit of a spring clean, and 2 times out of 3 I can now reboot successfully.
... failing which, reboot in Safe Mode and try again.

  • Snow Leopard and Apple 20 inch ACD Problem

Installed SL using the defaults on one of my White MacBooks - no problems, except its not any quicker.
As everything seemed ok, decided to intstall SL on my Mac Pro with a 20 inch ACD. Part way through the install the display started flashing between blue screen and installed progress screen.
Install finished OK, and rebooted. The screen just now switched between all light blue and showing the desktop. If I use a Macbook and screen share, all is OK with the desktop. I have tried changing the screen settings using screen share and not had any luck getting the ACD to work.
    Anyone any ideas?
I assume it is still the ongoing problem of the screen drivers Apple screwed up with the last "update" to Leopard that was never fixed. I had thought they might have sorted it for SL
    SPB

I had a very similar problem.
On my MacBook Pro, half way through the screen went black, and looked as if the brightness was turned all the way down. I held a flashlight to the back of my screen and logged in, and the brightness returned to the normal level.
On my Mac Pro, I have 6 monitors with 3 dual head cards, factory installed. One of the monitors, is black. Again it looks like the brightness is turned all the way down. There is no way for me to change the brightness level in the System Preferences.
After talking to Apple Support for 45 minutes and trying different things, they recommended that I reinstall Snow Leopard. I am in the process now.

  • Snow Leopard Time machine migration to Lion problem?

I have a time machine backup of a mac with snow leopard that I made back in June. I want to put it on my new mac with Lion but it won't have this update - http://www.cultofmac.com/105225/if-you-want-to-migrate-from-snow-leopard-to-lion -tomorrow-you-need-this-update/ -
I don't have the old mac to install this update on and update my time machine backup so what can I do??
    any suggestions please?

Thanks Pondini, I was concerned that my Snow Leopard backups may not be compatible with Time Machine on Lion and I was going to use the Migration Assistant instead of the Setup Assistant. I have the WD NAS which I'm aware currently has AFP issues like many other NAS drives. I'm holding thumbs that by the time I get my new iMac WD would have released the firmware update so I don't have any issues.
WD NAS users can setup a notification at the following link for when the new firmware becomes available:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7081
Failing which you can always try this workaround from Alexander Wilde - http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-wo rkaround/

  • 10.5.8 Combo update problem

I'm trying to update from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. I download the Combo update 10.5.8 and double click on the .dmg icon. I get the following message:
The following disk images failed to mount
    MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.dmg not recognized
What can I do to fix this? At this time I cannot upgrade.

This download I've tried twice with the same results... "unable to mount disk" I need the Combi update b/c my primary application (Digidesign Pro Tools) requires it... don't know why but using the update feature can cause problems in Pro Tools.
    Digidesign recommends the Combi update...
I'll try to download again tonight and keep my fingers crossed... but I would really like an answer to this problem if possible...
    Thanks for your response!

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and flash problems

Well, this problem is iny my head for a long time.
I'm working on a iMac 12.1 and i'm really happy to have my favourite Snow Leopard 10.6.8 OS, althought there are several problems with Adobe Flash Player.
My internet browsers (Safari, Firefox, Chrome - tried everyone) can't show a frame with streamed video. It's a camera, that shows White Storks in Poland.
Safari: It shows a blank white box, the second camer shows a thinking black frame.
Firefox: says: 201, unable to load stream or clip file.
When i'm working on Mountain Lion (10.8.3) at home  this problem doesn't exist. Everything is working fine.
I don't want to upgrade my first machine to 10.8.3. Anyone can help me?

    sorry for the mistakes

Two bugs, one affecting Apple's Mac platform and another attacking Microsoft's Windows, exploit certain Flash player vulnerabilities to install malware onto users' systems, reports ArsTechnica. While users of other operating systems like Linux have yet to report attacks, Adobe's advisory notes the exploit affects all platforms.
Designated as CVE-2013-0634, the first vulnerability targets the Safari and Firefox Web browsers running on OS X, and is also being used as a trojan to deploy Microsoft Word documents containing malware. For Mac users, the flaw affects Adobe Flash Player version 11.5.502.146 or earlier.
On March 1, 2013 Apple again blocked Flash Player for Lion and Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5660
The Adobe Flash patch can be found on Adobe’s website, and users can visit this page to check if their software is the most curent version.
You should uninstall any previous version first, and repair permissions after installing the new version.
If you still get a ‘plug-ins blocked’ message:

  • Snow Leopard and hosting Ruby Rails: mysql problem

Hi, I'm just starting to look at ruby rails hosting on my 10.6.1 server. I have been working through the Apple tutorial "deploy rails on leopard" ( http://developer.apple.com/tools/deployonrailsleopard.html ).
I have hit a problem with Capistrano attempting to use the Ruby MySql gem on the Snow Leopard server. The error is "The bundled mysql.rb driver has been removed from Rails 2.2. Please install the mysql gem and try again: gem install mysql"
Now, after much googling I have found a number of folks struggling to get the Ruby MySql gem working on 10.6 Clients. Mostly the suggestions involve installing a newer version of MySql and setting the compiler options during gem build.
I'm a little nervous of just trying to mimic this approach on a server system. So I have a two part question:
    1. Has anyone found good documentation for setting up Ruby Rails on Snow Leopard server?
    2. Has anyone found good documentation on getting the Ruby MySql Gem running on 10.6 server?
    many thanks in advance, Jonathan

it should work the same way as on 10.6 client.
    you might try this approach:
