Snow Leopard and Parallels 9 - No Sound or AirPort

Hello,
Well, I was finally able to create a VM for Snow Leopard Server to use on Mavericks but there's one problem which I need fixing... it seems it is not detecting my in-built speakers or AirPort card (maybe more).
Does anyone know how I could sort this out? Everything works well outside the VM, and I've checked the configuration of the VM many times and they all seem correct. Am I missing something?
I would post on the Parallels forum but I found a couple of threads explaining the same problem with no answers created a few years back.

Well, after some digging I've finally solved my sound problem, I can do without the AirPort usage as it still connects to AirPort bu indirectly which means slower connect... I think haha
But if anyone has had the same issues then this short documentation should help http://kb.parallels.com/120937
Make sure to install the Audio 10.5 file not the 10.9 version otherwise it won't work (or that's what I found out with my machine)

Snow Leopard and Parallels

I have just upgraded my I-Mac to Snow Leopard, so am now at 10.6.3. It appears that I can no longer use my Parallels virtual machine with 10.6.3: I am told that Apple does not permit Snow Leopard to be used in that way. This is not exactly good news. Does that mean I need to go on up to Lion? If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

Exactly, you need to Software update to 10.6.8, then visit Parallels and find out what version you need to upgrade that software to work with 10.6.8.
Likely it's a paid upgrade, so be prepared for that.
I have now moved up to 10.6.8 (amazingly, the Snow Leopard upgrade takes you only to 10.6.3, which is falsely described on the box as 'new'),
10.6 is "new" OS X version/upgrade, at that time it was released, pressed into disks and mass produced boxes.
Software update brings you from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 which the .3 or .8 at the end are merely updates and not a upgrade.

Don't know, you have to visit Parallels site and ask, I use VMFusion for a virtual machine program.

Can I not simply upgrade the existing Parallels software without reloading the Windows OEM disk?
Yes if Windows is already installed in Parallels, simply updating the Parallels program should take the pre-existing Windows virtual machine file and use that like before.
With virtual machine software, other operating systems are simply files that are opened up by the program called Parallels, so newer versions of Parallels should almost always open older files it made.

Snow Leopard and Airport...not doing so well altogether.

I upgraded from 10.5.6 or whatever it was in June when I left...when I came back my internet was dropping a little bit here and there...and when I upgraded to Snow Leopard and the install and reboot was all over, Airport dropped my internet so quickly. Rebooted my computer, reinstalled snow leopard, turned off airport, changed the IP, I believe I did everything I could to do get the internet to work.
Right now is weird because this is one of the times where it dropped, maintained, dropped and maintained again. As Im speaking it just dropped...and came back up. Im so sick of this. My sister doesnt have the same problem at all. ****! She can get on to the cisco clean access agent, and snow leopard isnt compatabile with that yet so I cant get on to the internet at school. I dont care about the internet at school..I need the internet at home more than at school.
So in short, can you guys tell me what steps to do that will get my internet to drop less..to mainly be like my sisters where she isnt ******** about it 24/7. She does NOT have Snow Leopard but 10.5.6 OSX or whatever it is now. A key note is that I dont have my OSX install cd's from the original 10.5.2 when I got my MBP, and I didnt set up time machine before I redid it. So Im stuck with this new OS. And you might say its the router or whatever but I swear to god its not, its my computer. I just need to know what I can do that can get my internet so it doesnt drop!!! Thanks guys!

I have a Mini and am experiencing the same. Started with wireless dropping every 20 minutes or so. Then it couldn't find signal so I moved my Time Capsule closer. I'm watching my transmit rate drop every few minutes from 58, then 24, then 18, then 12, now 1. The icon in the status menu doesn't change though. According to that icon I'm getting 4 full bars of signal. If I Option+right click then I see that I'm only at 1

Uh…no, you didn't. Snow Leopard is not available as a download, and never has been. So that means you're running Lion, in which case Parallels 3 definitely won't be compatible with it. You need to check what you're really running and use that information to post in the correct forum, as well as provide the necessary information about it.

IP Address Conflicts - iMac and Airport Express, Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion

In our home we have an iMac, two Mac notebooks, an iPad, an Apple TV and a Sony Playstation that all use wi-fi. I have a recurring problem. When several devices are connected to the Internet through Airport Extreme (wi-fi) downloads really slow down. Since the Airport Extreme is connected directly to a Motorola cable modem that also has wi-fi, I often shift my iMac wi-fi connection to the Motorola cable modem to speed up the Internet. Lately I have been getting an IP address conflict message in a pop-up box when I shift to the cable modem wi-fi. The system preference shows the IP address automatically assigned via DCHP. It also offers the option of DHCP plus manual.
I am now using Snow Leopard and intend to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
How can I resolve the conflict? Or, should I consider some other wifi network configuration? Is the upgrade to Mountain Lion likely to resolve the problem or make it worse? Can I use the DHCP plus manual to manually assign an IP address to the iMac to resolve the IP address conflict, and, if so, what it the procedure?

Is the DHCP assignment being done by your cable modem or your AirPort Extreme?
What is the exact text of the conlict message, and where does it pop up?
If your cable modem and your AirPort Extreme are both running DHCP servers for the same subnet (which they really should not be allowed to do), they must be set to assign addresses from disjoint pools.

Am using Macbook pro mid 2010 running on OSX 10.9.5. It does not read my old Seagate back up plus ITB ext hard disk which opens and works on snow leopard. The back ups were made on snow leopard and mountain lion. How do I make it work on Mavericks?

I have been making back ups on a Seagate Back up plus drive on a macbook pro running on Mountain lion. Sadly the mac was stolen and all I had was the seagate back up. I tried opening it on my old iMac running on snow leopard and after several visits to this forum managed to open it. The data was safe and sound. Now I have received a hand me down macbook pro which runs on osx 10.9.5. I'm assuming there is a compatability issue as the drive does not come on at all when I hook it up to the usb port. I checked the seagate drive once again on the imac and its light came on on that system. Then I suspected there may be a problem with this macbook pro usb port. But it seemed to work fine when i hooked my camera cord into it. Is it that I must reinstall mavericks. In which case how do I back up before reformatting or reinstalling. BTW I did the command+ R thingy and repaired my internal Hard disc which was showing errors. What do I do next, your help is most appreciated if you have had a similar problem.

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

I need to have both Snow leopard and Lion...Mountain lion running on my iMac. How do I install Lion or Mountain lion on an Ext H D and boot from it?

My software is obsolete (and now dead) in 10.7 so I need to keep Snow leopard alive to run that- but now things like TurboTax are dropping support for 10.6 or lower and I have to have lion or Mountain Lion available. I actually downloaded Lion onto a thumb drive but never installed it when I found out that it would immedaitely render all my FreeHand files inaccessible (years of work!), Now that I am forced to have an OS above 10.6 I was hoping I could install whichever--Lion or Mountain Lion onto an external hard drive and figure out how to boot from that (found something in archives I think, but I need words of one syllable or less). This way I could, ideally, boot from either the External hard drive in the higher OS when needed, or from the internal hard drive when I need to use Snow leopard. There is a long story here, but I think this is the gist. I wasn not sure if this should be asked here or in either Lion or Mountain Lion (both of which I have, essentially, ignored since I would not be moving up until I could figure out how to access those old files of forms and drawings00but now I have no choice. I am panicking now that I HAVE to make the move anbd cannot afford to buy another Mac just to keep two separately running. Any help would be greatly appreciated. i asked Apple when Lion came out and they said there was no way to partition (even if I KNEW how to do that) the haaard drive and install both on my iMac-- but I "think" this is a bit different and possible??? You need to move to Windows 7, because Apple is now releasing a new OS X version annually and it's playing havoc with people's hardware and software.
Windows 7 will get support until 2020, that's 8 years of software stability, however you do need to make System Restore disks, boot disk and another on a hard drive to self restore (like TimeMachine is for OS X)
Apple has no plans to change their currrent behavior as all they care about is selling new hardware with a shiny new OS X verison on it.
If you wait to move, what will happen is you'll lose that full 8 years and will have to swtich to a newer Windows sooner
Windows 7 machines are still widely avaialble, despite Windows 8 (a failure) being pushed currently.
Running three OS X operating systems on one machine is quite a chore reserved for only seasoned computer geeks, then it's only going to last X months as the next OS X version will be released, then the next a year after that.
Another method would be to get a virtual machine software (virtualbox is free) and install Windows 7 into that to ease your transitition if you cant' spring for a Windows 7 machine, preferablly a tower that will last a long time.
Here is a method to run Snow Leopard in Parallels, however it's a unapproced hack and not for the comptuer newbie.

We have no control over Apple's OS X release cycle, nor the third party developers who make their own decisions what to support.
Our only choice as users to stop using both products and seek software/hardware stability.

Snow Leopard and MS Exchange 2003 -USING OWA-

I have a new 27" iMac with Snow Leopard. I am trying to connect to my company's MS Exchange 2003 via OWA NOT IMAP or POP, OWA. I dont like mail.app or like using iCal for calendering. So I like OWA using Safari or FF.
I also have several other machines in my home office: 8 Macs (Dual G5 - Leopard, 27" iMac - Snow Leopard, G4 Mini - Leopard, 15" Powerbook - Leopard, 15" MacBook Pro - Snow Leopard, 24" iMacs - Snow Leopard, and quad Intel XServe - Tiger) and a couple of Dells one with XP and one with Vista. I'm a geek, can you tell?
On every machine using Leopard and Snow Leopard, I cannot connect to Exchange 2003 OWA using Safari or FF. It takes forever and then once I get the login dialog it eventually times out.
HOWEVER, on Tiger no mater if on Quad Intel XServe or the Dual G5 (I can boot Leopard or Tiger), there are no problems. There are no problems conecting or logging into Exchange via Safari or FF.
Also, to reiterate, XP and Vista on a Dell have no issues, nor does XP on Fusion 3.0 int the 27" iMac.
So it HAS to be related to Leopard and Snow Leopard. Remember it is not an issue of time outs after logging in as some posts on ArsTechnica suggests, here we cant even get to the exchange server in a timely manor. When I ping the server it just sits there.

Microsoft was been useless. Their solution is Exchange 2007, But they cant seem to understand that I do not want to use mail.app and ical. I want to use the OWA!

From my MBP with 10.6.2 I can connect using OWA both to a hosted service running Exchange 2007 and an internal service running Exchange 2003.
It sounds as if there is a problem with the network configuration. Is there any firewall between your client system and your company server? Are you using the same IP information (DNS, GW, etc) on the client as on the other systems which work for you?

Updated to Snow leopard and PDF files disappear

Here's what happened. After I updated to Snow Leopard, when I went to print a PDF from Quark or Illustrator, it looked liked it was printing but no file is produced? Nothing...nada. I assumed it had to do with my distiller or Acrobat. I went to the help section in Acrobate, clicked on HELP, then REPAIR ACROBAT INSTALLATION. Thought that sounded good. Now I can find my printers? States no printer selected? Using Acrobat 9.
Anyone have ideas how to fix this this? I'm a beginner for the most part. Thanks so much!

The way you create PDF now in Snow leopard and Leopard you go to Print menu click on PDF hold until a pop up menu shows The choose "create AcrobatPDF".
As for printing its possible you need to either update your print Driver, Or Printer. I know I had to give up my much treasured HP DJ990cse Inkjet printer and get a new C310 Printer/Scanner combo.
It makes great photo and great documents but is more trouble to operate.

Install boot camp snow leopard and mountain lion

Is it possible to install boot camp on a 2009 Mac Pro to run both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion? The startup drive is already partitioned. I need to run two different versions of Final Cut Studio (and all the accompanying apps) and this seems the best way to keep them segregated. I know that I can run them both in Snow Leopard, but I have two different sets of Motion templates which need to be accessed.

Alrighty, I do appreciate your time. I had already tried parallels and that was a huge waste of time. You blow away their support, by the way.
Just to confirm assumptions before I do this, sorry, I'm an engineer.
1. The startup drive is partitioned already.
2. Partition (1) contains Snow Leopard and a user account.
3. Partition (2) currently contains a media library, does not have an OS on it, and has 232 GB free.
4. I will install Mountain Lion on partition 2 using the dmg downloaded from the app store.
5. That partition will then become the startup drive when using mountain lion.
6. Partition 2 will have its own user account, applications, etc.
Almost forgot. Do I need to erase and install on that partition or can I simply install? After this I owe you a beer.

Unable to set up a dual boot for Snow Leopard and Lion

I'm running an early 2011 MacBook Pro. I originally ran this machine with Snow leopard for quite a while. I've got 8 GB RAM and lots of free space on my hard drive. I upgraded to Lion and it works well. But I want to boot to Snow Leopard from an external drive to run some old Rosetta apps. However, I couldn't run the Snow Leopard installation disk on the Lion Machine. When I tried to boot to the installation disk, I would get a beeping sound during startup, three beeps in a row - repeating, and it would not boot. So I connected the external to another machine running Snow Leopard and I installed a new version of Snow Leopard on the external drive. But my Lion machine will not boot from that external. I am able to select the Snow Leopard drive in the Start Up Disk pane in the prefs. But when I restart, I just get the three beeps. I must be missing something here. Any help would be appreciated.

Not in cases when the computer successfully boots to one OS but produces three beeps when an attempt is made to boot it to another. If it really was a RAM problem that serious, the computer wouldn't get as far as checking the OS version, and it has no problems booting Lion. In the event of a minor RAM problem, it wouldn't produce three beeps like that at all.

Is it possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?

Hey All,
Anyone know if it is possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?
I am using SPSS 16 and it is not compatible with snow leopard. A temporary fix right now if I partitioned my hard drive and installed Leopard on some extra space to run SPSS. This is kind of annoying because I only need Leopard to use SPSS. I would rather emulate it so I can listen to iTunes and check my email in SL.
What about Panther? I think I even have a copy of Panther to install in Parallels?
I read somewhere that the EULA restricts OS X from being emulated, which seems odd for Mac users who need to test or use old software. I understand though about emulating OS X on windows machine though. I guess they need to blow off the whole foot than just cut off one toe.

From what I can tell, doing this would be, at best, of dubious legality.
Even so, the popular opinion seems to be that it would take some degree of hacking to pull off a virtual machine running OS X. I think that unless you are willing and able to undertake such a task, your best bet is to stick with a partition running an old version or wait for SPSS to be updated for Snow Leopard.
Although...... I have Parallels 4 (current version is 5) and it has an option, when setting up a new Virtual Machine, to install Mac OS X server (see image linked below). Perhaps if you could get a copy of the server edition of the OS you would have more success?

How can I run Snow Leopard on parallels?

I have recently changed my Powerbook G4 to a Macbook Air running Yosemite and have an accounts package called MYOB which requires ppc compatibility.
I have a Snow Leopard (and also a Leopard) disc and have tried to load them as guest OS on Parallels but to no avail. It seems that although I have purchased these OSs I need to buy a multi use licence or server version to make them work. Is this true and if so where can I purchase the necessary serial?

It sounds like you have moved iCal from it's normal location and are opening a second copy which is the older version.
The current version of OS X 10.6 is 10.6.8. As you are running 10.6.3 you need the updates. Go to the Apple Menu > Software update and keep doing this until it says all updates have been installed.
Click anywhere on your desktop (the background).
Go to the top of the computer screen and click on "Go" > "Applications"
In this list look for "iCal".
Double-click iCal in this location (which is the proper home for iCal) and see what version it says.
If it reports the correct version you can drag the iCal from the Applications folder to the dock on your screen to add an button for it (if you already have one in the dock, remove it before you drag this one there). Be sure to leave iCal in the Applications folder.

64-Bit and 32-Bit: Snow Leopard and Windows 7

Hi All:
I will eventually be dual booting Snow Leopard and Windows 7. I have never used Boot Camp before and have several questions, including one related to Boot Camp.
First, when installing 7, will I need to format the 7 partition, presumably NTSF.
Second, given my MBP's 64-bit architecture, will I be able to run 64-bit 7. I am aware, of course, that not many programs are available in 64-bit for either platform. Also, I know that the Snow Leopard renditions of all, or most, of the iLife programs will be 64-bit.
Does Leopard (and will Snow Leopard) run 32-bit programs in an emulation mode similar to the way 64-bit Vista/7 run 32-bit programs. In this regard, I assume, which surely must be the case, that OS X is a 64-bit program.

i run win7rc1 via bootcamp 32bit on mbp 17" 3.06ghz
and same, but 64bit on imac 3.06ghz.
all works perfect, also apple's keyboard (brightness+-/sound +-/keyboardbcklight +-/eject ..
format is ntfs; backupable with winclone, also now (i have cloned from ssd to ssd).
apps run also in emulation, but where specified drivers are needed (e.g. for flashing ci-cards) 32bit are a must (therefore i have 32bit on my mbp).
partly i have boot camp 3.0 drivers (snowleo) in the mbp ..
