Snow Leopard booting in unwanted Verbose mode

Hi,
Just bought a 2nd hand Mac Mini on which I clean installed Snow Leopard. Whenever I boot the screen goes black and fills with white text with information about the boot process. Verbose Mode, I presume. After the GUI comes in the Mac Mini boots and functions as normal. My question is how do I turn this off. I have tried: "sudo nvram boot-args=" to no effect. Is there another way to stop Verbose mode?

keep googling, as there are a LOT more - and eventually we'll have a good idea of which drivers work and whether things go faster or slower.

I'm more concerned that it might send serial numbers to the mothership - but, most of these apps are indeed entirely innocent. I've just been involved in the security world too long to have much trust.

Can i use someone else's Snow Leopard boot disk to upgrade my mac?

I am unfortunately at that stage in life where as a teenager i have many lusts and "needs" but have hit the road block... money.
I have enough to buy lion through the appstore but have not got enough to first upgrade to Snow Leopard and THEN Lion as well.
If my dad has a Snow Leopard boot disk with his mac, can i use it to upgrade mine and then go on to buy Lion through the Mac Appstore?

No for possibly two reasons ... First, that's illegal as it's a violation of the Apple license agreement, and second, boot disks are locked to the system type they are delivered with. Ask your Dad instead how you can earn $29 doing some chores around the house, or let the word get out that for any holiday gifts in December that cash would be appreciated.
Since you're on Leopard today, you probaby know in wanting to move to Lion that Lion no longer has the Rosetta emulator and thus doesn't support anything with PowerPC code. That's surprised some, so just FYI.

Leopard Unable To Boot, Loops In Verbose Mode

I really hope someone can help me out here!
I recently backedup(Leopard), partitioned(my internal HDD) and restored Leopard
but now when booting it just stalls at the Apple screen with the loadnig circle at the bottom. I have done resores numerous times before and this is the first problem i have had.
No matter how long I leave it loading (+5 hours, to test) it never loads.
It doesnt start in safe mode, single user mode and when in Verbose mode it infinetly loops at this portion:

I have a small backup partition of Tiger and it workd fine, i can see the resored drive and all its contents(Applications etc.) and disk utility reports no problems when verify and repairing the disk.
I have also run Hardware diagnostics at startup and it reported no errors.
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated as I do not want to loose Leopard and all my files.

See if you can boot into the Leopard DVD. Insert DVD, reboot and hold down "C" key.
After language screen, in menu top left under Utilities, you will find disk utility.app (DU)
Run DU and first verify/repair HD and then repair permissions on the Leopard volume.
Reboot and see what happens or report back with any problems or errors you get.
Also, since one backup is SuperDuper! can you boot into that? Hold down Option key on boot and see if it shows up. If it does, does it boot normally?

How to permanently boot up in verbose mode?

Hi,
I want to always boot up OS X Mavericks (10.9.2) in verbose mode (debug mode) as I pressed Cmd+V everytime.
I remember an old command which I used on Snow Leopard for doing this:
« sudo nvram boot-args="-v" »
but I don't know if it's still valid on Mavericks!!
The command « nvram -p » works and doesn't show any "-v" verbalization in the "boot-args" section, so I'm currently thinking my command is still valid (it does still show other commands, though).
But I need your help, Apple experts! Can you confirm this?

Restart the computer. At the chime press and hold down the SHIFT key until you see the spinning gear below the Apple Logo. You should also see a progress bar appear. Booting into Safe Mode takes much longer than a normal startup.

Snow Leopard Boot Camp Install Woes

I'm having some trouble installing boot camp. I have a MBP 2.2 and I have just installed OS 10.6 and I am trying to reinstall my boot camp partition. I am using an HP external USB DVD drive (which has been used to installed boot camp successfully in the past and is what I used to install SL). Anyway, 10.6 installs with no problems and then I am able to use boot camp assistant to set up the partition and the computer restarts. Then the disc attempts to spin up (I am trying with both Windows 7 32-bit and Windows XP... both discs have been used successfully in other situations) and then the screen usually stays grey/blank. Sometimes I can hold option and I get the HDD icon and it hangs. If I disconnect the drive and start the computer I get the apple icon and then it flashes a circle with a line through it and goes no further. Does anyone have any ideas? I am pretty sure the drive and the discs are good because I have used them to install windows on other macs with no problems.

I've also got this problem, after upgrading to Snow Leopard I couldn't access my windows partition anymore, the startup screen would hang after clicking the arrow under Windows HD. We removed it with Boot Camp Assistant and now when we try and re-install Windows (XP), the installations progresses until it hangs on a grey screen (we don't make it to BIOS) and we have to restart.
Additionally after the installation attempt, we can't get past the grey screen of death on startup (we get the startup noise - no apple logo) and have to use reset my Mac's PRAM and NVRAM to progress.
Also, after going through this process a Boot Camp disk image is created but it's empty.
Disk utility isn't detecting any problems. Could we have removed the partition incorrectly and something is jarring the process?

Help! G4 PowerBook will only boot up in Verbose mode(?!)

Whenever I switch on my PowerBook, it won't get past the chime/black screen unless I press Option-V.
Without Option-V, the hard disk starts up and sounds normal, but after approx. 10-15 seconds of black screen I hear a high-pitched squeak as it appears to shut down the power. (Tried removing battery and plugging into mains power.)
I tried lots of different key combinations (e.g. boot from Tiger) but even the DVD drive appears to die and shut down.
However, when trying verbose mode to trace the problem through the logs, I have found that Option-V causes it to boot normally. I don't see any log information at all(!) - the PowerBook goes through the normal startup process to the Apple logo and then successfully onto the finder.
Has anybody got any idea what could be wrong?
(The PowerBook is 2-years old and there were no visible warning signs leading up to this problem.)

First:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If the hard drive is OK per the above then reinstall OS X by doing an Archive and Install. Archive and Install will install a fresh copy of OS X without erasing the hard drive. Of course you must have sufficient free space on the hard drive to do this (8-10 GBs during installation.) Your old system will be archived in a Previous System Folder located at the root directory of hard drive.
Please carefully read the information on Archive and Install before proceeding.

After Upgrade to Snow Leopard booting Stops at Apple sign plus spinning cir

I changes the harddrive in my mac Book pro (Late 2008). Before i had a fujitsu 400 gb harddrive. It was Slow, but it worked. Now i changed it into a hitachi travelstar 500 gb 7k500. Installing Leopard no problem. It worked just Fine. Then i installed the Upgrade to Snow Leopard and after restart it went until the apple sign with the spinnig Circle under it ( Grey screen). and the Circle keeps spinnig for hours and Snow Leopard won't start. Can someone Tell me what the problem is and what i can do about it. I read Lots of posts in other communities andit Sems as if thers had nö Problem with this hard drive but None Said if he had Snow leopard installed. I am starting to freak, because i can't figure it out.
Before the spinnig Circle there's another Odd Thing. The Grey screen with the Apple sign Shows up with Progress bar under it. I don't Know. Never had a Problem like hat before. Hope you can help me.

Thanks. Now I could back it up. It even booted. But now I have a new problem. The new hard drive is reallz faster than the old one. But Evers now and then the system just freezes. Not like when it was overworked before with the old system. No it completely freezes. You can just move the mouse then. But you can move windows, can't click on anything. This lasts about 30 seconds, then everything is normal. Is there a size maximum for a internal hard drive or cache max or a speed max. It makes go crazy.
But never the less. You first hit helped. Maybe you have another one.

After downloading the Lion installer, it won't install on my 1 TB Snow Leopard boot disk. Why?

The disk has been verified, has shown no other problems and is up to date. Of the other volumes available in my system, only another (much smaller) with Snow Leopard shows as possible for the installation. The message for the disk I want to use is "This disk cannot be used to boot your computer". Computer is early 2009 MacPro with plenty of memory, disc to be used has 500 GB free. I have previously done a successfuil download of the installer, then a successful installation on another small volume, which is now erased, so I don't think there is a download problem. This installation was over Snow Leopard, which is what it now won't do on another volume.

I have read on these support pages that you cannot get snow leopard freshly installed without erasing the whole whole drive since the original installation disks are older than the current updated version. I have also read here that it is possible to get the system newly installed (though it's wise to have a back up of the rest of your files). I need to know which can work. Is there an un-install function after booting from a different source? If I can get the system filess off the main hard drive and then install Snow Leopard from my original disks, then go through the upgrades, and end up with the rest of my files intact, that would be wonderful. I have all the adobe design premium software on the system with their updates and would like to not spend hours and hours restoring it all. And since I don't know where all the little bits and pieces of the Adobe programs get installed, perhaps it won't work anyway?

That is incorrect. You can install an older version of the same OS over itself. With Snow Leopard and later, unless you intentionally select to erase the drive, the OS removes and replaces all remnants of the current OS and leaves all of your third party apps, personal files and settings intact.

No, there is no way to remove just the OS files from a drive. At least, not in any manner you could call easy. There are thousands of hidden files and folders related to UNIX. Many apps won't even run correctly, or at all, if they're not on the same drive you are starting up to. So trying to separate your third party apps from the drive the OS is on is not a good idea.

If your end goal is to simply get the contents of the external drive onto a new internal drive in a bootable form, you can use Disk Utility to clone the drive, or use one of two excellent third party apps; SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner.

Snow Leopard booting 11-12 seconds slower!!!

I did upgrade to a 7200 HD... Yes I received the "GUID" message & had to boot from disk & reformat... The problem, I have got rid of languages I dont need...I've done a pram reset, I've reset permissions & repaired disk...
Could the slower speed be due to the different format cus that will suck, I had startup up times of 16-17 seconds in Leopard...Now its more like 27-28 seconds with Snow Leopard...

Is it really that important if you boot in 29, 35 or 45 sec?
I've noticed mine took 85 sec before Tony T1 (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2135474&tstart=0) suggested to go to Startup Disk and select the correct Disk (I have only one disk, only one partition). Now it's around 40-45 sec.

Re-installed fresh Snow Leopard, Boot camp boots,but wont show on startup..

Ok, I had Boot Camp on my iMac with Snow Leopard fine. I decided to reinstall Snow Leopard fresh.
Chose the Mac HDD partition, it re-installed fine. I then thought I'd have to do the Boot Camp again, but I held don "alt" key and Boot Camp boots fine and works.
So I normally have the Boot Camp to boot 1st, as wife and kids use Windows. However I go into Boot Camp on Mac OS, and it doesn't show the boot camp startup disk. Where's it gone?
As I say everything is fine, apart from it now looks like its lost track of the Boot Camp partition.
Is there anyway I can get it back? I ran Boot Camp wizard on Mac, but it either wants to create a new Boot Camp partition, or run windows installer, both which I dont want.

Set the default startup disk in Windows.
There is no Boot Camp on Mac OS ("go into Boot Camp"?)
Try:
System Preferences / Startup Disk
On Windows, the Boot Camp Control Panel to used set the default OS
Wizard: by this assume Boot Camp Assistant, which is only a partitioning tool.
Boot Camp doesn't "boot," Windows boots.
Boot Camp - Assistant to create a partition
Boot Camp - Set of drivers and services
Boot Camp - Control panel in Windows to set default boot OS (Mac OS X volumes or Windows, with some other features for laptops I believe)
Personally, too many things use the same name and lead to misunderstandings.

Apple USB Modem Not Supported in Snow Leopard Running 64-bit Kernel Mode

Has anyone been able to get the Apple USB Modem to work with Snow Leopard (SL) when running SL in 64-bit kernel mode? I get an error saying hardware not supported.

I would suggest you take this question up in the MacBook Pro forum or perhaps the Snow Leopard forum. This forum is for question about older, Pre-G3 Apple hardware and so not the forum where you'll be most likely to get a quick and applicable response.

Snow Leopard boot time increased after software update

I don't know if somebody else is having the same problem, but it has happened to me two times after clean installations.
Snow Leopard was booting faster than Leopard in my MBP 2,4, 4gb ram and 7200rpm hard drive. It took around 30-35 seconds. But after installing the basic apps: iWork, iLife and its updates, it increased to 50 seconds.
I think that's a big difference. I thought something was wrong so I cleaned installed again without restoring a Time machine backup. TOTALLY clean installation. It's been even faster for a week always booting in less than 35 secs.
Today, I run the iTunes update and voilá... it takes 50-55 seconds to boot up.
Is there anybody else experiencing the same issue? I'm not a paranoid and never measured the boot time, but 35 seconds to 55 is a big difference and you really feel it is slower than before.

Same here. Since upgrading to 10.6.1. Much slower boot times now on my Mac Pro desktop. And when I launch Safari it takes about 20 seconds before my home page completely loads.
My Macbook still boots very quickly. And Safari loads incredibly fast (less than a second)..
