Snow Leopard Box Set vs standalone box

Is the SL DVD itself in the Box Set (which includes DVD's for iLife and iWork) the same as the single DVD SL box?

and the box set still has iWork 09, right..but, iLife '11
Just trying to make sure I Have what I need, since it is being reported Lion is going all Mac App Store..

  • Up Grade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard (Box Set)

I have a two part Question:
Do I have to do a full install or can I perform a partial install and not to up grade to snow leopard using the Box Set. I read stories the snow Leopard up grade is having issues with certain older programs (i.e. Photo shop, Word etc...) Is this true?
I assume the best method to install would be a Clean and Install or is there another way that it's done? The reason I need to up grade is because of my new modem -Airport Extreme, which requires Leopard.
    Thank for your insight..
    Brad

[Here is a thread describing a successful upgrade install from Tiger to Sno.|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2185421&tstart=125] And, here are my thoughts about moving from Tiger to Sno. I recommend that you use the upgrade method if your Tiger install is a very good one. Otherwise, I would do an erase and install. The backup process I would use in either case is described below.
Your Mac must meet [these general requirements|http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html]. I would not upgrade to SL unless I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal-drive boot volume on it. I think that there is enough risk upgrading to SL that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine for an installation backup; I don't trust it enough. If you do not like SL, then you can restore your internal using the clone. In doing an upgrade install, the clone is your data backup and fail-safe device. You can clone with Disk Utility, SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner. If you do an erase and install, then the clone also is your migration medium.
An upgrade install is performed by installing over your existing installation from the desktop or having started from your SL DVD. Doing so requires you to have a GUID partition. To proceed, start the installer, choose your language, start Disk Utility, make sure your partition is GUID, quit disk utility if it is and continue your installation. All your data, users settings, and apps will be present after your upgrade, except that incompatible programs will be archived in the Incompatible Software folder. It the partition is not GUID, then you will have to do an erase and install.
If you do an erase and install, then make sure your partition is GUID as described above. After you install, then you will be able to use set up assistant to migrate you data, apps, users, and settings to your new SL install. Also, if you have to make your partition GUID, then your drive will automatically be erased Mac extended (journaled). Finally, post back if you choose to do an erase and install. I have more info to provide.
You probably will want to install at least two of the optional install items on your Sno DVD, Rosetta and QT7. You can install either from the Optional Install Items folder on your on SL install DVD.
Leave your Ethernet cable, if any, in place when installing, but unplug all peripherals except those needed to install.

  • Where is the Snow Leopard box set?

When I check the Apple Online Store all I can see is the Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade pack, it says if I want to upgrade from Tiger that I must buy the box set but I can't see it.  Any ideas?
Also, if I have two MacBooks on Leopard which Snow Leopard pack should I purchase to upgrade them both?  Would I have to buy iLife separately or could I still use the old iLife that came with the MacBooks?
    Thank you for your advice!

    Find one at amazon.
Snow Leopard is certainly a very good, solid OS, and I am not entirely sure about Lion yet.

  • Is Snow Leopard already set up on a new MacBook Air?

I just bought a MacBook Air from an online Apple store in Korea. I haven't opened the computer yet or the Snow Leopard operating disc. When I open the MBA, will it already have the operating system installed? Or do I have to install it myself? Also, is there only one version of the Snow Leopard disc? I am asking because I cannot understand Korean and if it opens up in the Korean language, I am stuck. If I can select English I will be OK. I have also bought the superdrive that goes with the MBA. If I have to install the OS myself is it straightforward? Or will I run into difficulties because I bought everything from a Korean online store?

I don't know what OS was in place when your MBAir was packaged for retail sale.
If the box has a Disk that appears to have been 'dropped in' the box, outside of original packaging then it is coming with Leopard installed and you can easily upgrade it to Snow Leopard with the upgrade disk.
The original restore DVD's will be gray in color and located inside the packaging with a few other odd's and end's. You may never need to use them because the OS is already on your drive.
Since you've already purchased an external superdrive you should be able to boot from the superdrive by holding down the Option key during boot and upgrade your OS to SL if required, then go up to the Apple menu at the top of the monitor and choose Software Update. Get the updates, including the 10.6.1 update, let them install, then use 'Disk Utility' to Repair Permissions on the hard drive.
New machines are pretty straight-forward to set up.
When a Mac is first turned on it will ask you to specify what language to use. First thing. Just choose English.

  • Running Lion; can snow leopard be set up with bootcamp?

I have several programs that won't run in Lion on my MacBook Pro.
Will bootcamp allow me to partition part of disc to run snow leopard which will run my programs?
    Thanks
    rjchemdoc

There is no need to set up bootcamp to install
Snow Leopard.  Simply create a partiton on your
hard drive the size that you wish using Disk Utility
and then use your Snow Leopard disks to intall
    in that partition.
Make sure you have backup of your stuff in Lion.
Even though adding a partiton should be non-destructive
    things can go wrong.

  • Snow leopard server set up

question regarding network preferences on server itself "What DNS Server do you have in your Network panel in System Preferences on the server?

What DNS Server do you have in your Network panel in System Preferences on the server?
No one can answer that for you becaise it depends on your network setup. What's right for me is likely not going to be right for you, nor the guy sitting next to you.
Ultimately, though, you need a server that understands your LAN network and can resolve the local LAN addresses (e.g. 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, etc.) of your LAN. This absolutely precludes using your ISP's DNS server or any other external DNS server since they cannot know your LAN setup.
So you are going to need to specify a DNS server on the LAN. If you have one that's already managing your local DNS then use that.
If you don't have one then you're going to need to configure DNS on some device to do that job. You could do it on this machine, in which case you'd enter '127.0.0.1' as your DNS server, or you could do it on another machine in your LAN (in which case you enter that machine's address).
Either are fine approaches. Using your ISP, GoogleDNS, OpenDNS, or any other DNS server outside your LAN is doomed to failure, though.

  • How can I upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard wihout violating EULA while Mac Box Set is no longer available?

I use my original Tiger bought with MacBook Pro. But now so many applications do not support Tiger, so I decided to upgrade to SL.
But required by Apple way to do this with Mac Box Set seems to be impossible. Mac Box Set is no longer available from Apple.
Is upgrading using Snow Leopard disc, which is still in Apple Store, ok?
I will be gratefull for help.

The Mac Box Set includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife ’09 and iWork ’09. If you just use the SL installer, you don't get the additional apps.

  • Installation Options for iMovie HD on Snow Leopard system with iLife '09

Greetings and thank-you for contributing suggestions on what is a well worn subject. I have read many of the posts existing on this topic and am trying to nip some details.
I have a late 2006 iMac that came with Tiger and iMovie HD which is now at version 6.0.3. When I upgraded to Snow Leopard (Boxed Set) I got iLife 09 but, as it was supposed to do, it left me iMovie HD which is what I have used. I have both sets of installation DVD's. (from the iMac and the SL upgrade)
Today I got a new MacMini and am plotting how to get iMovie HD on it.
I gather that I first need to remove iMovie 09 from the Mini. I do that by dragging its application bundle in finder to the trash and removing any receipt packages.
Do I have to remove all of the iLife 09 applications or just iMovie 09?
Then, I reinstall either all of iLife 06 from the iMac DVD or just iMovie HD. After that I can load iLife 09 from the SL DVD. That will leave the iMovie HD on the system but upgrade everything else.
Should I run software update from iMovie HD to try to get the 6.0.3 version or download and run the upgrade image? Does it matter?
I am good to go. Did I miss anything?
I also have a SuperDuper clone of the iMac system. Another possibility is to boot from that and clone it to the new Mini. Does anyone think this is a better idea?
Thanks again for the insights of your experience.

I think the issue is that if you install iMovie 06 on a system with iMovie 09 installed, iMovie 6 has no knowledge that iMovie 09 exists. Therefore iMovie 6 installs itself in the iMovie folder in the Applications Folder and assumes anything in there is old and can be trashed.
Apple fixed this with iMovie 6.04, but this is no longer available.
But if you install iMovie 6 first, and iMovie 9 second, iMovie 9 knows about iMovie 6 and will move it to a folder called "iMovie - Previous Versions".
In your case, I would uninstall iMovie 09 as you started to do, then run the migration assistant, then reinstall iMovie 09.
It should also work to create a folder on your old system called "iMovie - Previous Versions". Drag the iMovie 6 app into this folder and verify that it works. Then do the Migration Assistant. This should work, but I hesitate to recommend it because I have not tested it. Best case, it installs and you did not even have to uninstall iMovie 09. Worst case, delete the iMovie folder and reinstall iMovie 09.
For what its worth, I recently did a Migration Assistant from a SuperDuper clone (after a failed hard disk) that had both iMovie 09 and iMovie 6 installed, and it worked fine. But I have not tried your scenario.
I would use Migration Assistant because then you have the correct version of Snow Leopard for your system. You may not if you use a clone. A new machine may have microcode that is not released to the general release of OSX for several months. If your Mini is a used one and at least 6 months old, a clone should work OK.

  • Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard - Do I need to erase tiger first?

I have the Snow Leopard box set and I'm about to install it. But do I need to erase Tiger first? If so how?
I don't want to install Leopard alongside Tiger obviously, I want to replace it. Will the disk do this automatically?
    Thanks

Whatever you do leave yourself a way to get back to where you started to cover the possibility that your Sno install doesn't go well. In this regard, I would have a bootable clone on an external drive for use in installing Sno and recovering from a bad Sno install.
I still prefer an erase and install, although the upgrade process is very acceptable too. Really, just do whichever your prefer.
If you do an erase and install, then you can restore everything from the bootable clone (if you make one) at the end of the installation--users, settings, data, and apps. In this regard, I would not plug the external in until the last install restartup. If you do an upgrade installation, then all you users, settings, data, and apps should be in place at the end of your installation.
Be sure you are connected to the internet while installing. Doing so will will help getting connect to your network, the internet, and MobileMe (if pertinent).

  • Want to Dual Boot Tiger and Snow Leopard

I have 4 internal SATA drives on my 2007 Mac Pro, and my boot drive is Tiger 10.4.11. I just purchased Snow Leopard (Box Set), with the intention of creating a second internal boot drive that boots Snow Leopard.
I mentioned this in passing to a senior Apple Tech who indicated he thought I could do it. However I seem to remember reading the second boot drive should be an External Fire Wire.
The first question is, can I create a second boot drive (using Snow Leopard) on my Mac Pro on an internal HD?
Second question is, can the second Snow Leopard boot be on a partition? I just bought a 2 TB WD that I'd like to split up.
    Thanks!

can I create a second boot drive (using Snow Leopard) on my Mac Pro on an internal HD?
    Yes.
Second question is, can the second Snow Leopard boot be on a partition?
    Yes.
Note that Spotlight will reindex the drives each time you change OSes unless they're excluded in System Preferences.

  • Problem with Snow Leopard disc

I just bought the Snow Leopard boxed set and I cannot get the drive to recognize the SL disc.
Before I even began, I backed up my files to my external drive and used the Disc Utility to repair permissions and ensure my HD was ready for the upgrade. When I put the SL disc in, it just ejects it.
    So far, I have tried:
    1. Other DVD's including a movie, the iWork disc, the iLife disc (that came in the boxed set) and they all work properly
    2. Put the SL DVD in my mom's iMac - that worked fine as well
    3. My Tiger install DVD - works fine too
My drive will not recognize the SL disc. It just makes some noise for a moment and I can hear the drive spinning but then it just ejects the disc.
I have 2gb of RAM and 30gb of available disc space and I'm currently running 10.4.11.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!
I used a DVD cleaner and cleaned my drive. It's now working.
No idea why all the other discs worked fine and not this one but it's working now. I'll let you know how it turns out.
    Very weird, though.

  • From Tiger to Leopard... Leopard to Snow Leopard..

    hello,
i'm currently using tiger on my macbook, and was thinking about upgrading to leopard or SL. i was reading info on SL and read that users of tigers must upgrade to leopard first before upgrading to SL. i was just wondering if that's true, and with my macbook hardware, should i even upgrade at all? thanks for reading.

To comply with the terms of the license, yes you must have Leopard installed on your Mac in order to qualify for the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade.
You can jump from Tiger right to Snow Leopard by buying the Snow Leopard Box Set with iLife and iWork.

  • Snow Leopard Family Pack but still need one copy of 10.5

I have 4 Intel Macs and 1 PPC (G5, Dual, Tower). My OS' look like this:
    PPC Tower - 10.4
    Intel Tower - 10.4
    Intel Tower - 10.4
    Mini Mac - 10.5
    MacBook Pro - 10.5
The MacBook and Mini Mac came with 10.5 so I don't have the OS disk.
I am ordering the Snow Leopard Family Pack to upgrade the Intel machines.
Does anybody know how (given the parameters above) to get my PPC 10.4 to
10.5 (Leopard) without buying a new License? Seems like I have the License
already but I don't have the disks so I can move it to another serial number.
    Thanks.

Do note that the PPC machine won't run Snow Leopard and you'll need a retail Leopard disk to get it to that or combine it with a Leopard family pack ($199) and use it to get the Intel towers to Leopard, followed by a Snow Leopard family pack ($49) or get the Tiger to Snow Leopard boxed set family pack for $229 for the towers (which won't work for the PPC). Alternatively, check out the price combos at http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d20aug2009

  • Time Machine not visible from SNow Leopard

I have a Time Capsule that has been performing sterling duty on my iMac and Macbook for the past couple of years.
Having just upgraded the Macbook to Snow Leopard I set it to backup for the first time (>60 GB) which took a day or so over Wifi - at this point the backup was visible and browsable.
After the backup the time capsule is visible in the Finder and I can see the sparsebundle, however the preferences suggest that I need a new backup and I cannot enter Time Machine.
The iMac, still running 10.5.8, can still see it's own backups.
There is approx. 250GB left on the Time Capsule.

  • Snow Leopard will not load or install

    I need lots of help.
Bought the Snow Leopard Box Set.
Load the DVD only to have it eject after it spins 3 times.
Cleaned the optical drive, tried other cds and dvds - they work.
Even loaded the iWork DVD from the box set - that loaded but wouldn't install.
Was told to download the Combo Update from Apple. Have the .dmg file sitting on the desktop but that won't install.
    Repaired permissions.
Tried it all again, same result.
Don't have the original start up discs - anyway to erase the HD with out them and then do a clean install?
Any and all advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Were you having any issues with your computer before you decided to purchase Snow Leopard? It is my observation on these forums that people are sometimes motivated to buy SL because they are having issues with their current setup.
You say you downloaded the Combo Update but it won't install. Exactly what Combo Update are you talking about? Surely you are not talking about the Snow Leopard Combo Updater, right?
It is certainly possible your problem is simply you have a bad SL install disc. You wouldn't be the first. Where did you buy the SL Box Set? Does Montana even have an Apple Store?
