Snow Leopard Bugs

I just loaded Snow Leopard clean to my 2009 iMac; no time machine, no backup. Just CLEAN.
Problems:
(1) Safari takes 20 to 30 seconds to load Apple's home page, and other pages with RSS. Pages with no RSS and no QT animation load fine.
(2) I have no other software loaded yet other than Apple's. From time to time, after boot, the Trash bin will have an empty Recovered Files folder. No big deals. But it is irritating.
I've tried emptying Safari's cache and resetting it and all that. Makes no difference.
Any ideas?

I'm not seeing anything like that here. Try posting over on the [Getting Online and Networking forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1343], and be ready with more details about your networking setup.

This is normal. When any application leaves files in the temporary folder, those files get placed into a Recovered Files folder in the trash every time you log out. Applications should clean up after themselves, but many (even some Apple apps) don't do so appropriately.

  • Posix error snow leopard bug

I guess this issue has been occuring since Leopard.  A drive goes bad and it needs to be reformatted but Disk Utility in Snow Leopard refuses to erase the drive and or partition it because of a posix error --  Cannot allocate memory.  This is a major problem if one wants to fix (zero) a drive.
I, fortunately, had my old powerpc desktop running Tiger and disk utility did what snow leopard didn't, it cleanly zeroed the same malfunctioning drive.
If any apple engineers are reading this, could we have a fix for this lingering bug?
    thanks

    Thank you.
Yes, I'm running into similar issues when enabling Stealth Firewall.

  • Photoshop CS4 Snow Leopard Bugs: Cursor Position & Grains

Currently running OSX Snow Leopard (10.6.1), and just installed the latest Adobe updates this morning (9.22.09).
There are two bugs in Ps CS4 I've encountered, one minor but aesthetically unpleasant, and the other major and disrupting:
The first bug occurs at random when Ps is extended to "Full Screen Mode with Menu Ba." As seen in the image at the following link, graininess occurs in Ps's canvas background, and wont disappear until the screen mode is toggled (pressing the "F" key three times): http://img.skitch.com/20090922-tyxk4dfrak4dtf2f4rg7fgyn59.jpg Again, not a major bug, but simply annoying to look at.
The second, more annoying bug, has to do with the cursor and selection tools. I could not determine when exactly this happens and how it goes away, but a few times throughout the day the selection cursor is a few pixels off. When either the lasso, magic wand, marquee or other similar tools are selected, the actual area from which Ps begins to select is about 10-15 pixels below the cursor position, see image in link for clarification: http://img.skitch.com/20090922-1jyqdtj34xw99ysq4gjxhxx57c.jpg
I hope this notice gets the bugs fixed. If you're experiencing similar Snow Leopard side-effects and can detect how and when they occur, please let me know. The canvas background pixelation, I can live with...but the cursor selection bug makes my day twice as difficult and slows my workflow down to a snail's pace.

Not sure about the graininess as I have never seen it but it seems to be the same fix as for the curser being off by 10 pixels. cycle though the screen modes with the F key. this has nothing to do with Snow Leopard as it is present in both Tiger and Leopard as well.
This bug is only present when you create a new doc in full screen mode. If you are a new convert to Mac from Windows you might want to use the application frame, this will give you the gray background without those two annoyances. You can find the application frame at the bottom of the Window menu. this is a new feature on the Mac version with CS4.

  • Snow leopard bug with iweb black template

I installed Snow Leopard this weekend. When I went to add content to my website this am, I found that all my pages and entries on the black templates were unreadable. The fonts were ultra condensed so that letters and words were superimposed. I was able to fix them by reselecting the fonts. Just one more thing in my Vista-like Event Horizon involving Safari, Mail, all my fonts, two restores from time machine and an uninstall and then reinstall of my HP printer despite SLs dire warning of the consequences.

Delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, repair disk permissions, reboot, launch iWeb and republish the site. See if that will make any changes. The black theme works for me in myTestPage .
Can you give us the URL so we can examine it first hand?

  • Another snow leopard bug?

the day i installed it onto my macbook pro, i was unable to shutdown or restart my computer after several hours of use. i had to hold the power button to be able to shut down my computer.
what happened prior to this was:
    - i installed 10.6
    - thinking i hadn't installed everything, i opted to (re)install some of the things in the optional folder (i was disappointed i no longer had quicktime pro, which i discovered after the fact that it got shifted to the utilities folder)
    - while installing these options i kept getting an error message relating to the file: CNQL1212_ClassicNotSeize.kext
    - after the install completed, thinking something might be wrong, i did a fresh install of 10.6
    - after several hours, i went to shut down my computer only to discover i couldn't
anyone else have the problem of not being able to shutdown or restart???

everything seems to be working fine now. it only happened the once.
when i clicked to shutdown or restart, nothing happened - as though the shutdown and restart buttons had no more functionality. no error message, no freeze, no black screen. i could have continued to use to my computer normally, i just wasn't able to turn it off without holding the power button down.

  • New Snow Leopard Bug

For some reason my iMac won't stay asleep. This is starting to bother me because my iMac is beside my bed and it wakes me up when I hear the hard drive spin back up. I counted at least 4 times last night that I heard it wake itself up (and me). I usually sleep my iMac at 10:00 pm manually. Here is log entries from console the first of 4 times it happened last night:

I don't use the software. I have all software and firmware updates installed for this drive. Also the WDsmartware, has been hidden by me through a western digital installation. Last night I decided to unplug the usb cables for the drive to see if it would happen if the drive wasn't connected. It did.
I pulled myself out of bed to get more system log files:

  • Airport express printing problem with Snow Leopard

I am no longer able to print to my shared printer after upgrading to Snow Leopard. I get a message that starts with "communication failure the computer is no longer able to communicate with your printer". My network consists of a dual-band Airport extreme and an Airport Express. The dual-band Airport Extreme creates the network and is connected to the internet. The printer (HP LaserJet 1012) is connected to the AirPort Express. The AirPort express joins the dual-band Airport extreme network for the sole purpose of turning the HP LaserJet 1012 into a shared wireless printer. Everything was working fine before the upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I connect the printer directly to my MAC via USB, it prints fine. I can "see" the printer fine through bonjour when it is connected to the AirPort express, but I get a failure whenever I try to print to it. I have tried plugging and unplugging the device. I have effectively redownloaded the print-driver by connecting the printer directly to my MAC. It sounds like a Snow Leopard bug. Any suggestions for a work-around? Thanks.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard and had difficulties connecting to my HP Photosmart 7150 printer through Airport Express. Apple setup found a 3rd party printer driver by Gutenprint, which I downloaded and the printer works. But like it did under Leopard. Under the 10.5 OS, a print command would send a wake up signal to the HP, which automatically turned off after a period of idleness, and then print. Under 10.6, there is no wake up and I need to manually activate the printer. I went to the HP web site hoping to find a "new" driver for 10.6 and HP has posted a message saying it does not and will not be providing print driver for 10.6. It then has a long list of HP devices that cannot or will not print with Snow Leopard. So those with no-printing issues should check your model against the HP driver listing. I believe this is a neat way for HP to force Mac users who upgrade or install 10.6 to buy a new printer for which HP has a 10.6 driver. At least I can print and the only inconvenience that I can see if the lack of that wake up signal. My wife says it won't hurt me if I have to get up and walk to the room with the printer to turn it on!

  • Mac Mini w/ Snow Leopard hibernating when it shouldn't

Hi, two Snow Leopard bugs to report:
    1. I've got a Mac Mini (from ~early 08) which I've recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. I've got the Energy Saver control panel set to never allow the machine to go to sleep or to sleep the display. However, I hear the machine going into hibernation sometimes when it should be just idling in the Finder. I've snipped out the useful part of my system.log that shows the machine going to sleep and then waking back up when I hit a key:

Have you tried trashing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist, & if you have one, /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist? Or toggling between one of the preset Energy Saver settings & your normal one?
Also, very unlikely to be the problem but make sure no uninterruptible power supply emergency shutdown settings are somehow in effect with the pmset -g ups terminal command -- I think you should see:
    <pre>UPS settings:haltlevel off 0
    haltafter off 0
    haltremain off 0</pre>
Regarding your other problem, does it make any difference if the display is connected directly to the Mini, without using the switcher?

  • IPhoto 8.1 breaks Entourage 2008 with Snow Leopard

The new iPhoto 8.1 update breaks the email functionality to Entourage 2008, if you're using Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
iPhoto 8.1 can no longer successfully email photos to Entourage 2008. It worked just fine with iPhoto 8.0.4, but no longer works with iPhoto 8.1. This is a SNOW LEOPARD PROBLEM... it works just fine under LEOPARD.
The steps to reproduce this problem are as follows:
    1. Change iPhoto's preferences to use Entourage as your email client.
    2. Choose a photo.
    3. Click on the "Email" button.
You will get an error message from the Finder that states "Microsoft Entourage got an error. Can't get content of window ' '". So you are not able to email a photo through Entourage this way anymore. You have to do it manually.
This is a SNOW LEOPARD BUG.
Ideas on how to fix this?

    Sorry, clarification on this bug:
THIS BUG HAPPENS IF YOU UNCHECK THE "Titles" checkbox that appears in iPhoto after you click on the email button.
This actually happened in iPhoto 8.0.4 as well.
So THAT'S the bug -- if you UNCHECK THE "titles" checkbox, the email doesn't send.
    Sorry for the confusion here!

  • Cs3 and snow leopard spaces problem

    Hi,
Panic over about cs3, because even though Adobe is not supporting it, it seems to work ok. Touch wood. Hopefully I won't come across any annoying problems which affect my workflow. I want to wait for cs5 to upgrade.
A problem with spaces might be related to cs3 but might be a snow leopard problem.
If I drag an image over the photoshop icon, it opens that in the photoshop assigned space. If I then drag a file over the Illustrator icon, it opens it in the SAME space, not the Illustrator assigned space.
i think this is a snow leopard bug, has anyone else experienced it. It's annoying and if it is a bug hope apple fix it asap because it renders spaces useless. The whol epoint is for each app to stay in its own space not start overlapping again, causing me to have to minimise windows to see underneath.

Adobe CS 3 didn't place nice in Leopard's spaces so I think you are looking at an Adobe bug, not a new SL bug. Don't know if CS 4 does any better with Spaces or not. I'm seriously looking for alternatives to Adobe's software - they've taken on the same 'we know best - we are god' attitude Microsoft did in the mid 90s'

  • Anyone upgrade to Snow Leopard and runs CS3 or CS4?

Hi all. I'm looking to upgrade my Mac from tiger to snow leopard, but I wanted to make sure there weren't any problems beforehand. Has anyone upgraded to Snow Leopard? Have you had any problems running CS3 or CS4 since?
    Thanks.

Works fine for me on a 2008 unibody MBP. Only a couple bugs that I can live -- neither affect workflow or CS4 functionality.
    A) As with Leopard, some programs have an issue with closing. About half the time when you close Ai or Dw the program closes fine -- then it tells you it crashed. A bit annoying, but I just go ahead and send the error report, dosent affect much, although if you've changed any preferences they might get lost. Adobe's prob gotten several hundred crash reports from me on that one :∫
    B) Occasionally when you switch from one app to another and you try to go back it only will switch only when you click the icon on the bottom -- otherwise the app you want will just switch back to the other app -- I think it's a snow leopard bug, but seems to affect Flash and AE. Very rarely however.
I've been using Snow Leopard w/ CS4 since release day for prob 14 hours a day 6 days a week and these are my observations.
Go for it dude, you'll love 10.6 -- Use CCC before that way if it's not functioning properly you can aways go back.
It should be noted, I have not tested any third party plug-ins yet. After Effects by itself 9.0.2 has no issues that I can tell.

  • Old screensaver bug still present in Snow Leopard

This bug has driven me mad in the past (since Tiger!) and I am still getting it on Snow Leopard.
    Scenario:
    1. Invoke screensaver
    2. Wake computer
    3. Get password prompt for a split second - (it disappears, like a focus issue).
    4. left with a blank screen and cursor. No means of logging in.
    5. try to re-invoke screensaver by either putting to sleep via power button or closing lid.
    6. Awaken computer - same thing happens.
This doesn't happen 100% of the time but it does require a hard reboot to get out of.
This is one of those bugs that i've managed to live with for a few years but i'm starting to go mad when its still present in the Snowleopard! (pls excuse my venting!)
Obviously the easy issue is to disable the screensaver password - but you'd think this would be fixed by now - Or am I just being stupid and missing something obvious?
    Cheers,
    Steve </vent>

I am experiencing both your size issue and a different bug concurrently.
I also get the 'white' image bug if scrolling through images and then quickly backtracking to a previous one. Then that image will remain white until I close quicklook and reopen it on a different file. Reopening on the same file still results in a white image.  Happened under 10.9 and is happening to me under 10.9.2 on a Macbook Pro, 2010 iMac and non-apple branded um, mac. Size and file type don't matter.
I get a similar log entries once in a while but the backtracking white image thing doesn't cause quicklookd to spam any console info that is searchable in the console.
Removing quicklook plugins, clearing it's cache and whatnot didn't do anything.
    *EDIT*
    http://support.cocoatech.com/discussions/announcements/6-quicklook-issues-pf-652
Apparently my 'snap back' issue is was caused by the version of Path Finder 6 I was running on those machines.
It would seem that there are a number of other issues with the 10.9 quicklook API. I guess I'm going to wait and hope it gets fixed.

  • Bug in Preview in Snow Leopard when opening multiple pdf files at once

I receive 50-200 pdf files by e-mail each day. I have historically saved the pdf attachments to a folder, then selected all the pdf files in the folder (CMD A), then opened all the selected files in Preview (CMD O). After updating to Snow Leopard, downloading 34 pdf files to a folder, selecting them all, then attempting to open them all in Preview (using both CMD O, then File/Open, then File/Open With), the effort first opens 6 of the 34 files. Closing all then trying again results in 7 files being opened, closing all then trying again results in 8 files being opened, etc etc. Earlier today I had the same results, but eventually got a message asking if I wanted to open all in separate windows (I did) or a single window, and it opened all the files at once as I wanted. After shutting down, moving home, and receiving additional pdf files, however, back to the same open 5, then open 6, etc. problem. Anyone else having this problem or a suggestion on how to resolve?
    Thanks for suggestions,
    B

More info - apparently the bug isn't related to Preview, but to the attempt to open all pdf files in the folder with ANY program. After having Preview open 25 of the 34 files I was attempting to open, I then tried opening all 34 with Adobe Reader. It opened 26 (after Preview had opened 25). Tried again with Preview - it opened 27, then 28 with Adobe Reader. It doesn't necessarily open the FIRST 25 (or 26, etc) either, so it's difficult to work with the open ones, then go back and work with the remaining ones later.

  • Really stupid bugs in Mail 4.2 (Snow Leopard 10.6.2)

    Hi everyone,
I decided to write about all bugs that I discovered in Mail 4.2 (Snow Leopard 10.6.2) since there is no known solution and since Apple's MobileMe Chat Support does not have any clue how to resolve this issues. First – I have three configured e-mail accounts: MobileMe, Gmail (IMAP) and third-party IMAP account.
    The issues are:
    1. IDLE command turned on causes new mail sound stop working. If I unchecked this option in all accounts (also MobileMe) the sound is back. If any of the accounts has this option checked, sound stops working again. So I found a workaround (not a solution) – I set checking for new mail to 'every 1 minute' and hoped everything would work.
    2. But it's not working as one could imagine... At first it is, but then, after some time for no known (at least to me) reason Mail doesn't receive any new mail from third-party IMAP account and Gmail. MobileMe is still working. I tried every solution that in my opinion could have helped: erasing account and setting it up again, rebuilding mailboxes, deleting envelope index file, repairing permissions etc. Nothing helped. I even installed once again Mac OS X 10.6.2 Combo Update to be perfectly sure I did everything.
    3. Next bug I discovered is with sending e-mails. Since I sometimes want to have access to my draft messages from internet I checked 'Store draft messages on the server' checkbox. Now... when composing a message in Mail app it's momentarily saved on the server, whether it has attachments or not. Then when the message is complete I push the Send button and the message is being sent. The reasonable mail app would then delete the draft version of this message from the Drafts folder. But not Mail 4.2, regardless in which e-mail account the message is stored. It doesn't delete the draft, what's more then synchronizes it with my other computer and then I have to log to webmail to delete the unwanted draft messages manually. VERY annoying.
Please let me know if you have similar problems or maybe anyone has a solution?
    Pawel

It is my thought and contention that #1 is not a bug, but purposeful -- see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11160423#11160423
With regard to #2, have you ever removed the Envelope Index without first removing any IMAP or Exchange account folders? If so, that can problematic. I cannot confirm any of the experiences you are having. I have 15 accounts, 7 of which are IMAP, and the latter include one Gmail and one MobileMe, and none of these issues are present. Have you tried creating a New User Account and setting your IMAP and Gmail up as that New User to further test the application itself?
The issue with Drafts being saved beyond their apparent usefulness is not new to Mail 4.2 -- happened with some frequency in all versions of Mail 3.x, and probably less frequently in 4.2. When it has happened, which is relatively infrequently for me, it has been seen in POP and IMAP alike.

  • ITunes 11 is a bag of hurt in Snow Leopard (multiple bugs) - Fixes? Workarounds?

iTunes 11 is a bag of hurt in Snow Leopard (multiple bugs) - Fixes? Workarounds?
I had been using iTunes 11.0.2 in Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on early 2011 Mac Book Pro. When I went to iTunes store on August 1, it would no longer display the iTunes store, it shows just a blank white screen. Upgrading to the current iTunes 11.0.4 does not help, I still get white screens when I try to go to the iTunes store. If I run iTunes 11.0.2 on a different Lion machine it displays the store just fine.
Before this crippling issue began, I was having two other problems with iTunes 11.
    1) When I was able and did view app descriptions in the iTunes store, I would try to click on the links for reviews, or related apps, etc, and none of the links worked. This problems also does not occur in Lion.
    2) Also, I really do not like the new app sync buttons, "Remove", "Will Remove", "Update", "Will Update". Sometimes iTunes becomes confused on the state of an app, especially when I sync two devices to have the same apps on each. Also, when I have many apps, its a pain to find and click all the "Update" buttons to make them say "Will Update" as I have to read the buttons closely. There should at least be a way to sort the apps by status so I can see all the ones that say "Update" together.
I am on Snow Leopard because I have some Mac apps that still require Rosetta and I do not wish to upgrade. However, it seems that even though Apple says iTunes is compatible with Snow Leopard, they are doing a poor job of testing it in Snow Leopard.
Anyone else seeing these issues with iTunes 11 in Snow Leopard? Any Fixes? Or Workarounds?

You are simply not understanding how app updating works in iTunes 11. Apple has changed it up a bit. When viewing your apps in iTunes, along the top, directly under the LED display click the "updates" tab. This will show you all the apps that have available updates. Then click the "update" button in the lower right of the screen.

This is generally a network issue. As a first trouble shooting step, restart your computer. If that does not work power cycling the internet modem will generally clear up the problem.
