Snow Leopard: can't connect to AFP server anymore
We are using the MacServerIP (9.0) AFP server on a windows 2003 server. After updating from 10.5 to 10.6 we can not connect to this server using AFP anymore (connection failed). Connecting via SMB works fine.

I have the same problem logging in to an old Snap Server via AFP. "you entered an invalid username or password." is the error message. All was well in OS9 through 1.4 but this broke on 10.6 upgrade fro 10.4.
Apple support has not solved the problem. One thing I noticed is in the login dialog box there is no longer a list of options like there was in all versions up through 10.4, like sending password in clear text.
It is clear, that the two computers see each other given that the request for name and password come up for the target server.

Cannot send email with Mail app-..can't connect to AOL server anymore??
Up until today my MAIL app in my iMac let me use an email address that is from the AOL.com group (netscape.net)…I cannot send emails now because I can't get the computer to connect to the server. My iPad will….but not the desktop. I tried using a different server name; smtp.nestcape.net, which is the one I used in the iPad…but the iMac won't let me change it to that one..so back to the old smtp.aol.com……Still my MAIL app is not recognizing this or letting me connect!?!. I tried creating a new password at the wedpage of that email account.. successfully..but it has made no difference. I am stumped and have wasted half the day trying to deal with this. Anyone else have such an experience? HELP…PLEASE!

Fortunately after I wrote this post…I don't know what happened but I filled in my mail preference settings for the umteenth time with my new email password and voila! It worked. For some reason however…now when I open the Mail App I do still get a prompt asking me if I want to use this server….and it is, of course, the one and only I have listed.!?!?! The thing that irritates me…is…that I had done NOTHING to cause a problem to begin with. I think my email account at aol (nestcape) may have been hacked and my password stolen or compromised in some way??...and perhaps that caused a glitch in my mail app??? I am no techy, but I should have started out with my intuition and changed the password first before going mental….When something like this happens it makes one feel so vulnerable.…I usually feel well secured with my lone iMac and now my new iPad…ANYWAY…thank tyou for addressing my issue and I have bookmarked those links…for future reference which I hope I never need. MacMini 10.6.8 Snow Leopard can't connect to Windows 7 PC Printer over LAN?
I've searched for solutions and have found several (1) here gets me close, and similar (later too) (2) here.
When I add the new printer using the syntax in link 1 above, which looks like this:
smb://Jack:[email protected]/EpsonStylusPhotoR320,
them try a test print, the message I read in the printer queue is "authetication required".
When I try to resume the held print job, OSX pops up a dialouge box with my Windows 7 PC User ID of Jack listed. I enter the password Jds02524 (which of course is already in the printer syntax string), and click resume, but the job goes back on Hold again and I see another error message reading "NT_Status_Invalid_Parameter".
SO I'm really stumped here and hoping for some expert help.

It's "hard" because printer sharing in Windows is mostly broken for anything other than Windows...and even then it's often unreliable. Me personally, I've stopped sharing printers and started buying network capable printers. For my older printers, I've placed them on print-servers. (A D-Link standalone one for my Epson and the USB port on a Apple Airport for my Canon.) Tons more reliable printing to a network printer in a mixed OS environment.

I have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. After connecting my HP Photosmart D110 to it, the printer works but the scanner doesn't. The message is"The scan cannot be performed because another program has control of the HP imaging device". Can anyone help?
Found the answer on the HP site. It's the original software that works with this printer OS X 10.6!!

"Safari can't connect to the server".
Today when attempting to launch Safari, 'Little Snitch' tells me that:
"Safari wants to connect to www.i.google.com on port 80 / IP address 72.14.213.105 / Reverse DNS Name pv-in-f105.1e100.net "
When I 'Deny' this I get the message that "Safari can't connect to the server".
I do not understand how or why i.google is preventing my access to the web.
It's never happened before and Google is not my home page.

BACK STORY:
I have an Intel iMac. I've had it for a few years and it's always been awesome. I was running Leopard, and it was all gravy. So much so, that I even took it in to my Apple store to see if there was anything I needed to do to protect my machine, or if there were any updates for my machine that I should purchase. Dude at genius bar said yea, there is an iLife update and a new version of OS, Snow Leopard. He told me he would update my macbook (which was getting a new hard drive put in) for me and show me how to do it, so that when I got home with my iMac, I could do the same update to it. iLife 11 and Snow Leopard installed perfectly on my Macbook (my secondary computer). I tried to installed Snow Leopard verbatim what the Apple associate showed me, with his written directions. Popped in my disc, selected English, install began, got about 1/3 of the way through the progress bar and an error message came up reading "Snow Leopard can't be installed on this machine". Interesting. Apple store guy said I was good to go?
DIAGNOSIS FROM APPLE STORE:
I took my iMac back to the apple store the next day, with my macbook incase I needed to run a firewire from iMac to Macbook to transfer files. Dude tried to save some of my data but couldn't access it. He told me there was a OS conflict and he was unable to archive and install. He gave me a card with all the information for a data recovery service and told me I was SOL. Great. I took my mac in to make sure it was good to update, he said yes, and then I did it, in turn frying my main computer into a useless paperweight.
FUNCTIONALITY:
When I try to turn on my iMac now, it goes to a grey screen with an apple and a spinning gear. This screen stays up for about 45 seconds and then the computer shuts off. I've connected a firewire to the iMac and my Macbook and held the T key down in an effort to save my photos and music etc. The firewire symbol comes up on the iMac, but nothing appears in my finder on my Macbook like an external hard drive would. If I put the Snow Leopard disc in, and hold the T key, the Snow Leopard disc will show up in my Macbook's finder/desktop. If I put the Snow Leopard disc in the iMac and boot it up the computer just shuts down, even if I hold the C key. If I boot with the Leopard disc and hold C, the disc will mount and I can re-install Leopard, but I get a warning that all of my data will be erased in doing so. Obviously I don't want to part with 200+ GB of data. My last back up was about a month before all this so it won't be the end of the world but there are photos and other things that are recent to my hard drive with no back up and that I'd rather not lose if I don't have to.
BASIC INFORMATION:
I'm 24 with a bachelors degree and I am very comfortable with my mac. AKA you don't have to reply like you're teaching your grandma how to email.
My iMac IS an Intel iMac.
I have 47 GB of free space on it, plenty of room for an OS update.
Firewire ports are FW400 on both computers.
I had to archive and install Leopard once about a year ago on my iMac. Not sure why there was issue, but the problem was fixed when I did this.
So, do I have any options here besides erasing my hard drive? Has anyone ran into this before. Sorry for the rant. Thank you again.Attach an external hard drive to the iMac. Boot from the Snow Leopard disc again, launch Disk Utility, go into the Restore tab, select the internal drive as the source, select the external drive as the destination, and restore. Then partition -- do not merely erase -- the internal drive, and see whether you can install onto it. If you can, use Migration Assistant to restore your data from the backup.
Not backing up = inevitable data loss. -
Just installed mac osx snow leopard upgade and connected my printer too, and realized I have lost sound! Can anyone help?
In case I misunderstood, did you mean that the 10.6.3 version of Snow Leopard was the upgrade? If so you need to update via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8. These updates can correct minor system upsets.
And ... did you also repair permissions both before and after you upgraded. You should do this when you progress via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 too. -
I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?
I strongly advise against upgrading the OS without first making a backup. Were something to go wrong you would lose all your files without the backup. See:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s). -

From the directory utility i was able to pull down the File menu
and connect to the xserve using the diradmin account. This caused
a new path to appear in the search policy tab.
However, i still cannot bind to the server and still get the
authentication error when I try.
After rereading your post, I realized that you had added the path
a different way. So I deleted the one I had added via File -->
Connect and just went to the Search Policy tab and added a custom
path the way you said. Same results in the end. I could not bind.
I may just install 10.5 on these computers and be done with it.
My method was a little different. In Directory Utility, I went
to Advanced Settings, hit the '+' and added the open directory
server. Then I went to the Services tab, selected LDAPv3, and
hit the little pencil to edit. Then I selected the open
directory server, hit Edit, and tried to bind, but it wouldn't
work at first. Back in the Directory Servers tab, I noticed that
the little status light was grey instead of green. Then I went
to the Search Policy tab and noticed that the open directory
server wasn't in the path, so I went to Custom Path and manually
added it. After that, I was able to bind and the little status
light went green.
However, in this process I also did some other messing around on
the command line. After the first time I tried to bind and
couldn't, I quit the Directory Utility and opened a Terminal
window. As root, I wiped out the /private/etc/krb5.keytab file
and the contents of the /private/var/db/krb5kdc directory, and
then rebooted. That is:
cd /private/etc
sudo mv krb5.keytab krb5.keytab.orig
cd /private/var/db/krb5kdc
sudo rm -rf *

I have had to restore my Ipod Touch and now I can't connect to anything on it. When it asks for my Apple ID it comes up with an error message and says that it can't connect to the server. I have checked my WiFi connection and its connected.
