Snow Leopard causing Printer & Excel crashes PLEASE HELP!

Original install from 10.5.8 to 10.6.0 - now at 10.6.1.
The first install the system was freezing up and I couldn't get the printer to work. Internet was intermittent and slow as was the whole system and couldn't get Quicktime to work. Then the system hung up at the log in screen and went into a loop back to the log in screen effectively making the Mac Pro inoperable.
I wiped the computer and re-loaded Snow Leopard and used a Time Machine back-up to get everything back. Everything I opened worked fine (including the printer). I had to re-install Office:mac 2008 and then the problems started.
1.The printer would crash on anything I tried to print on any app, and the System Preference panel for printers would crash every time I tried to open it. I tried downloading the fix for HP Photosmart 3180 C All-In-One printer and got to a certain point and a warning resulted:
"/system/library/extensions/pulsedriver.kext was installed improperly and cannot be used. Get update from HP" ????
2. Excel will open about 5 workbooks with no data and the beach ball spins until it crashes.
A complete wipe and re-install of Office did not fix it.
I also fixed the permissions on my HD and repaired the disk and this did not help.
Is there anything I can do to fix these two areas without wiping the HD and starting from scratch?
The printer started to crash AFTER I installed Office:mac 2008. but wiping the program off the HD did not fix the printer.
Please Help !!!

I finished validating the fonts and used YUSA to clean up the caches but to no avail. I will look at an uninstall for the print driver and see what that does. My problem is that I can't even get into the print preferences because it fails to open.
Though I agree with you on Office being a very stable program. I am not able to get Excel to open up... It starts up and opens the last 5 spreadsheets that were previously opened before the problem started. The sheet shell is there for all 5 workbooks but there is no data and nothing but a beach ball bouncing around. Summer is over and I am sick of playing with the beach ball LOL
By the way - what All in one printer would you recommend for Mac. The HP printers I have are from my days when I used a (yuk) PC.
Also, I have two other Macs - a 15 Macbook Pro and a recently purchased 17 Macbook Pro - I have not installed Snow Leopard on either one and probably will not based on all the issues I am having with my tower. they run great right now and no problems with Office or the HP printers.

  • Snow Leopard causes computer to crash

I purchased a snow leopard home pack (5 users). The first was on my macbook pro and there were lots of problems with my e-mail account, key chain and a number of my usual third party software programmes will not run on it (bummer as most want me to buy an upgrade license - more expense.
The second computer I ran it on, my wife's mac book, failed to load half way through. The box text said something along the lines of "disk error, take in for repair". When I quit installer and had the option to go back to the start up disk the computer crashed. Now when I turn it on it runs the initial start up (grey screen) for about two minutes then shuts down before it loads the login screen. The disk is locked in side and the computer is not running. If any one has a simple solution short of having to take it to the apple repair shop where it will be incarcerated for a week will be greatly appreciated.
This has not been one of mac's better software upgrades for me and I'm not recommending it to my friends or company (we use mac). The problems are not out waying the so called benefits just yet.

Incompatible third party apps can cause a computer to crash Not SL.
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
Personally I find Snow Kitty to be great but still waiting for some third party apps to be updated by the software writers. Not a deal beaker for me but others are waiting.
Updates are coming in thick and fast from the best Mac software writers and Printer manufacturers but Apple cannot do anything about software writers who haven't bothered to update for SL.
From Apple: To remove stuck discs. Although the Take in for repair message is a worry.
    1. Place the computer in sleep mode.
    2. Press the Media Eject key at the top-right corner of the keyboard.
    3. If that doesn't work, drag the disc's icon to the Trash.
    4. If that doesn't work, restart the computer, then hold down the mouse button.

my itunes will not open at all. it occasionally will open but when i plug my iphone into it the program freezes and crashes. please help as soon as possible

i think i might have a solution... i have windows vista and after i installed to latest itunes update everytime i tried to open it it would freeze. I tried everything, including uninstalling itunes and all of its components and reinstalled it numerous times. So i went to the itunes folder in my folders, not on itunes, and i deleted my itunes library and playlists. After that it worked just fine, all of my music was deleted but luckily i had my files saved elsewhere.
I hope this helped! I know its frustrating and APPLE/ITUNES NEED TO FIX THE PROBLEM!!!!

  • Snow leopard server printing

I've got a Mac mini running Snow Leopard Server (10.6.8) and the printer sharing has never worked. I have a Canon i860 printer hooked up to the Mac mini via USB. I have created an LPR print queue for that printer in the Server Admin app and everything seems fine -- it says that the printer service is running, it has a name, and it is showing up in the list of Bonjour printers from the other machines on the network.
However, after adding this printer, no machines will print to that print queue over the network. The Mac mini will print to that printer over the direct USB connection, but other computers will not. Thus far:
    - the print queue shows up in the Bonjour list
    - you can add that printer to any computer on the network
    - you can (attempt) to print to it
    - but then all you get is an error message: "Network host 'Beefeater.local.' is busy; will retry in 30 seconds..."
It is as though the print jobs are not sent because no jobs show up in the queue in the Server Admin app on the server.
    Any ideas?

    Found this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13132912#13132912
...and renamed my print queue from "i860 on Beefeater" to "i860_beefeater"
Now instead of getting the "will retry" message cited above, the problem is that it displays a message that says "Copying print data..." and then shows a message that says "Printer paused." Clicking "Resume" in the toolbar does nothing; no jobs show in the Snow Leopard Server print queue; and there is no indication that the printer itself is having any trouble.
    Ideas?

  • I cannot control the sensor on my Mac, it moves by itself, and opens different pages. What can cause this problem? please help me.

I cannot control the sensor on my Mac, it moves by itself, and opens different pages. What can cause this problem? please help me.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article.
    2. Reset the System Management Controller.
    3. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    4. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced.
    5. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    6. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    7. If none of the above applies, or if you have good reason to think your computer is being controlled remotely, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi, disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop immediately, you should suspect an intrusion.

  • Updated to snow leopard.  Printer no longer turning on.

Since updating to Snow Leopard, my printer (an HP DeskJet 5550) no longer turns on when I print over my wireless network via Airport Express. Not sure if this has something to do with the Express, Snow Leopard, or something else.
    Any thoughts?

  • Frequent crashes on Leopard and Snow Leopard caused by java

    Hi,
My iMac has been crashing a lot for the last few months. I looked in CrashReporter and saw this:

Sometimes (usually when I'm watching a videos) the screen starts to go white with vertical lines and I am unable to do anything. I think these 2 problems (the horizontal lines and the white screen) are related. Maybe a broken graphics card? I don't think I can replace the graphics card in my iMac.
    Hope someone can help.
