Snow Leopard crashes Finder. It's not ready!!

If you've installed Snow Leopard without incident, congrats! My story is very different - it installed, then on restart Finder crashed. I forced a shutdown and Finder seizes on startup. I had to use my MacBook Pro system disk to reinstall the old OS, and now all my applications need to be reinstalled. I've wasted my whole day on this.
If you have any doubts or any important things to do for a week, do not buy and install Snow Leopard yet. It's not ready. If anyone knows whats wrong, please help me!

HI,
First, how much free space is on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
Next, if you use 3rd party software, there might have been an incompatibility issue.
And... did you run Disk Utility and repair permissions BEFORE and AFTER the installation?
Did you use Disk Utility to verify the disk for errors before installing 10.6?
Preparation is key to upgrading any operating system, especially backing up all important data. I hope you didn't lose anything.
I'm sorry you had this experience, but many others have had a successful upgrade. There are bound to be glitches for some though.

  • My mac snow leopard 10.6.8 can not find my 3050a printer wireless

My mac snow leopard 10.6.8 can not find my 3050a printer even though i have added the printer bonjour to my print list, even though the blue and white light s are on on the printer panel.
    I have good signal strength
    the printer ip is 192.168.1.8
    Help

OK, using these instructions: https://www.broadbandadvice.org.uk/Website/Routers/HG532.htm  change the channel to 11.
Now, if and when the printer is connected with a vaild IP address, let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
    - Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Snow Leopard crashes because of gdb

    Hello all,
I am debugging a binary (assembly only) using GDB 6.3.50-20050815 (Apple version gdb-1510) installed via latest XCode version and I am interested in watching $EAX for a specific value.
The problem is whenever I set a watchpoint for a register ("watch $eax", or "watch $eax == 0x12345678" i.e.) and issue "continue", the system crashes right away and I get rebooted. If I single-step it, there is no problem, until I continue the execution.
I've tried setting it to use software watchpoint (expecting a less severe error), but still Snow Leopard crashes.
On GDB 7.1 I was facing a similar problem (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4670185/snow-leopard-crashes-after-gdb-attemp ts-to-access-an-address-using-watchpoints) but I let it go since this was a too fresh gdb version. But I don't think this is the case for watching a register on 6.3.
Any ideia? I wonder is there is any log that I could look at.
    Thanks

    Hi,
There was no relevant log info. See console output for "All Messages":

Just before reproducing the crash I generated a debug dummy message ("sdsdsd") as a checkpoint, using "logger", and there was any log message further this one (besides the bootup ones, of course). Bootup messages don't say anything. I checked it using Console and Profiler.
I was also looking forward to see any log or gdb dump.
UPDATE: crash happens for watching a specific value and not for a general watch ("watch $eax" is fine; "watch $eax == 0x12345678" reboots).

  • ITunes 10.5 on Snow Leopard crashes

My iTunes 10.5 on Snow Leopard crashes after several minutes from starting. I've tried to reinstall it many times, but nothing helps. What should I do to solve this problem?

Very many thanks to you, Putaro!  Your answer provided the solution. It was a buggy plug-in that turned out to be the culprit.
You're off the hook, Apple, and my apologies for stating that you let a dog run loose. You skated by this time, Apple. But I'm watching you.
But again, Putaro's reference to the plugins I had installed over the years turned out to illuminate the problem. I have several plugins in my iTunes plugins folder, pretty much all designed to add more visualizer functionality. I removed all of them, and ALL of the problems I noted in my post went away, with full iTunes functionality restored.
I began adding the plugins back to hopefully single out the culprit. Among the ones I had been using included fielder, G-Force, Timestrech, volcanokit, QuartzComposer, and Jax. I hadn't used any of them in a while - probably at least a verison or more back in iTunes updates, but iTunes continued to work with all of them installed. Currently, only QuartzComposer continues to work in iTunes 10.4. The rest no longer even show up as visualizer opitons, with one exception. Jax does show up, but does not work. AND THE PRESENCE OF JAX IS WHAT KILLED MY ITUNES.
I looked into it and went back to the developer, and it appears that they discontinued developing Jax some time ago - evidently, it was buggy and crash prone. I remember after buying it, having problems with it - having never worked to its touted potential, but I didn't pursue it, and never uninstalled it. Leaving it in there caused all iTunes functionality to cease with the iTunes 10.4 update.
If you've got Jax installed, consider removing it before updating to iTunes 10.4.
My iTunes is now working right as rain, thanks again to Putaro!

How can I tell where the OS (Snow Leopard) is? I’m not sure if it is on the SSD or the regular HD. I just had a rough weekend trying to back things up with Time Machine and I think the OS was copied to the regular HD, or could be in two places? How do I find where the OS is? If it is on the regular drive I want to put it on the SSD.
    Thank you very much!

Some recent systems don't observe that convention - not sure at the moment about Snow Leopard but I have a feeling it doesn't.
Copy the following into the AppleScript Editor (in Applications/Utilities)
set dsk to the path to startup disk as string
    display dialog dsk
    click the 'run' button.

Sorry, but that is correct. You need Snow Leopard to sync your phone and the latest version of iTunes and you old G5 cannot run that.

You'll need to provide some more information .... what current mac mini do you have? Click on the apple in the left corner of the menu bar, click about this mac, and what does it say for processor, memory, and os x version?
When you say you have no DVD, do you have the mac mini server or is the DVD broken?
You can't do anything with 10.6 Snow Leopard on a PowerPC mini, however, if it is an Intel-based mini, you could probably hook up the systems in target disk mode to install 10.6.

  • Macbook pro  snow leopard 10.6.3 does not boot up. I get a grey screen and a pop up to restart computer

Snow leopard 10.6.3 does not boot up. Macbook pro. When I push the start button I hear a chime and then the apple logo shows up and the spinnings circle. In a little while a grey screen comes on and  after that a pop up telling me to shut down and restart my computer.I have done that andit still does not work. How do I fix it.?
    richardfromfort pierce

    richardfromfortpierce,
do you or don’t you have your MacBook Pro’s original grey installation DVDs?
If your MacBook Pro is a 2007 model, then Mac OS X 10.6.3 was not installed onto your MacBook Pro from its grey installation DVDs, but rather from a white Snow Leopard DVD. The white Snow Leopard DVD does not have any Apple Hardware Test; to run your Apple Hardware Test, you will need the grey installation DVDs which originally came with your MacBook Pro when it was new. If you no longer have those grey discs, you can contact Apple directly and purchase a replacement pair. (They’re not available in the Apple stores.)

I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie.  Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks for the reply.  I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long.  After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix.  I strongly suggest not to buy this product.

If your Mac meets these requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
then you can order a Snow Leopard disk and install it.

  • Snow Leopard crashes increasing

    Hello-
Since updating to Snow Leopard, my mac crashes three-four times a week. Lately it's been happening two or more times a day. It starts with the screen freezing, then part of the screen doesn't display the video correctly (like another image is being displayed...) then it restarts on it's own. I've never seen the display do this- and it can't be a good sign.
I haven't been able to determine any responsible application, and I'm on my fourth SL re-install. Does anybody have any ideas why Snow Leopard crashes so much? Any ideas are welcome.
    Thanks

    An update to my problem:
I think there are two types of crashes happening:
    1) _With restart_. This happens almost exclusively while iDVD is rendering video.
    2) _System freeze._ I can't pin these crashes to any application, and I have to do a hard restart to get out of it. These happen almost daily.
I tried reinstalling iDVD from the disk that came with my computer, but he option to install is greyed out. I deleted the iDVD cache in my home folder and themes from iDVD 1-4. Unfortunately it is still happening.
    Ay thoughts?
    Thanks!

  • Snow Leopard crashed : unable to find the hard drive in Disk utility

    Hello,
A few days ago, my computer (running on Snow Leopard 10.6.3) suddently crashed (no recent update, no new software or hardware installation).
Since then, i'm unable to start the computer. It freezes on the start screen with the apple and the loading bar. Sometimes i've got an empty folder with a question mark.
I tried to start with the install CD, and when i select Disk utility, it only recognizes the DVD, not the hard drive (then i cannot even try to repair it).
When i want to re-install Snow Leopard, i arrive on an empty screen on which i'm asked to choose a drive to install on. Of course as i cannot choose a drive, i cannot install.
Finally, when i try to start with no errors (pressing Maj button when starting), i've got a kernel panic error saying "unable to find driver for this platform ACPI"
    Can anyone help me ?
    thanks in advance.

Your hard drive has had a serious malfunction. It might be that it is software: your partition table may be corrupt. If so, this may be fixable if you take it to a local Apple certified tech. However, it is more likely that it is hardware and the drive itself has failed. I hope you have a backup. If you do, you will need to replace the drive and restore the backup to the new drive. If you don't and you have important data on that drive (and if you have important data, why don't you have a backup?) you will need to contact one of the data recovery services, such as Drive Savers or Rescuecom. Be advised that the price for data recovery starts at $200 and heads upwards really quickly, depending on what the exact problem with the drive is. I have seen data recovery charges of $3000 and more for seriously screwed up drives.
Having a backup is a lot easier and a lot cheaper.
