Snow Leopard Display Issues on Waking

My macbook pro developed a display issue after the upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I wake the computer from sleep, particularly if I've plugged/unplugged an external monitor while it was asleep, the display will show vertical lines and/or flutter from side to side (only the internal display.)
I'm able to resolve this by putting the computer back to sleep. Wake it again, and all is fine.
I have the 15" Core Duo with ATI Radeon X1600.
Although there are some similarities, this seems to be distinct from the issue described in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1697470&tstart=0
since it's unrelated to heat - it happens even with a cold computer that's been sleeping overnight, and the display anomalies are also different.
I did not have any issue using Leopard, then this problem started immediately after upgrading to Snow Leopard (as in, after the first time I put it to sleep.)

I use Ethernet so I cannot comment but have you tried trashing the airport pref.plist and removed the preferred networks in the network set up in System Preferences and then set up the wifi connection again?
This seems to help with a lot of airport problems on this forum.

  • Snow Leopard - Latency issues when waking from sleep

I own two macs ('09 mini and unibody macbook), both of which connect wirelessly to an airport extreme N router. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have been dealing with terrible latency issues when the computers wake from sleep. Ping times from local servers increase from around 23ms to 220ms and webpages load slowly. A quick reboot solves the issue. Connecting directly to the airport extreme with a patch cable also solves the latency issue so I know it's just with wireless.
Has anyone else experienced this problem since upgrading and, if so, what are you doing to solve the issue?

  • When will we get a fix for the Snow Leopard Compatibility issue??

When will we get a fix for the Snow Leopard Compatibility issue?
I am growing impatient not being able to use cross dissolve or titles.
Its going to be a pain having to back out to OS 10.5. This is beginning to be like Windows Vista.

You don't say what "..Snow Leopard Compatibility issue.." you're having.
My titles and Dissolves - and everything else - work perfectly with iMovie HD 6 and with iMovie '09 in Snow Leopard.
Perhaps you need to revert to QuickTime 7 ..just in case you over-wrote QT 7 with Snow Leopard's own QuickTime X when you upgraded to SL.
QT7 and QT X both sit happily alongside each other in Snow Leopard ..you might want to give that a try.
But I have no problem with any aspect of iMHD6 nor iM09 (..and no trouble with "stills"..) using Snow Leopard on a "late '08" MacBook Pro.
I haven't yet installed SL (Family Pack) on my Mac Mini ..I'll let SL throw away my QT7 on that, and will see if that causes any problems with iMovie. If it does, I'll then download and re-install QT7 and see if that fixes any problems. But don't hold your breath ..I may report back tomorrow, but today I'm pretty busy! I'll do my best, though..

  • Quicktime Pro 7 on Snow Leopard displays black with uncompressed Quicktime

Hi, I have searched these discussions but with no luck so far. Any help will be greatly appreciated but I have the feeling there may be no solution to my problem. Perhaps the new 64 Bit Quicktime 7 is missing the codecs I need.
For more than five years I have been exporting uncompressed Quicktimes from an online workstation (Autodesk Flame) to my G5 to make small quicktimes to email clients to see work in progress, or to make file sequences for upload and also to make DVDs fro client presentations outside my online suite. I would export an uncompressed Quicktimes of, (for instance), a 30" TV Commercials (of around 1GB) from my online workstation fro my Mac to deal with. This week I changed my five year old G5 for a Snow Leopard Mac Mini. My Quicktime 7 Pro license transferred fine, but it seems to me Quicktime 7 is working quite differently and iDVD also. When I open an uncompressed quicktime created from my online workstation the video is Black , but I can hear the audio. It still allows me to make a small H264 quicktime but I can't export file sequences correctly. The frames created are black. iDVD also creates black DVDs but with sound. BTW I have the same problem if I export an uncompressed AVI from Flame.
I thought it might be hardware limitation of the Mac-mini, but some simple tests indicate that's not the case. From my online machine I can export an uncompressed Targa file sequence of the Commercial and an uncompressed wav sound file instead of an uncompressed Quicktime. I can then use Quicktime 7 to put them together make an uncompresses quicktime from the Targa sequences combined with audio and it displays the video fine and I can do whatever I want with it, but it takes time to create. This uncompressed quicktime file is around the same size 1GB as the uncompressed movie file that I am trying to get Quicktime 7 to display, that I normally export from Flame. (And BTW the Mac Mini renders quicktimes nearly three times faster than my 2004 G5 and can play back the 1GB uncompressesd file it made with hardly a glitch, The G5 would choke if i tried to play an uncompressed movie).
This kind of uncompressed Quicktime that I can make from Targa files using Quicktime 7 Pro seem to be exactly the same as the uncompressed Quicktimes my Autodesk Flame exports. In the properties window the video codec is "None, 720 x 576 Millions+" in both cases, and it is of course a .mov. So why the difference? My big problem is that the uncompressed quicktimes exported from Flame are not able to be handled as well by my Mac as before. I know I can export file sequences with a separate audio files and put them together in Quicktime but when I am working on a commercial I might want to do this 20 times a day. Exporting an uncompressed file with audio is much less hassle. I would just drop it in iDVD and make a DVD or get Quicktime to re-encode it for email. My Post Production clients pay me to work on the online workstation and I don't want to spend extra time on my Mac-mini. I was hoping to spend less....
I hope I have been clear enough explaining my problem. Thanks very much for any tips.
    Regards,
    Harold

    Hi there,
I can confirm that this seems to be a bug in Quicktime where it tries to multiply the alpha channel against the contents of your movie file.
I had a bunch of Apple Animation quicktimes that are suddenly playing back as all black. I opened one of these movies in Shake and noticed that it had an all black alpha channel. So, as an experiment, I added an ellipse as an alpha channel (making sure it was not pre-multiplied against the image) and wrote this movie out as an Apple Animation. Sure enough, quicktime would now play back an image where the contents were only visible inside the the ellipse. I.e. it is multiplying the image by the alpha channel.
So, the issue is that quicktime multiplies the alpha channel against the contents of the movie.
The workaround is to re-encode your movies with solid white alpha channels (I have been unable to write out an Apple Animation movie without any alpha channel at all). Most likely you don't care what is in your alpha channel (the Apple Animation codec seems to add it whether you actively request it or not), but if you do, then I don't know how to get around this problem.
Also... what a pain. I don't really relish re-encoding all of my quicktimes. I will also file a bug (or piggy back on the one already filed). Hopefully we can get this fixed soon.

  • Snow leopard display and freezing

I reformatted my imac yesterday and ever since then, i am having problems with my imac freezing as well as display issues.....funny lines across my screen. at first it was when ever i used firefox, but now its even on my desktop. anyone know if there is a known issue? and how to solve it?

  • Snow Leopard: Display settings not working anymore. DO NOT LOCALIZE

    Hello,
the following message was posted in the MacBook Pro Display forums and i was suggested to write it here:
I purchased a MacBox Set and upgraded from Tiger on a MacBook Pro 15" (2007). I did a clean install. That was two weeks ago.
Today i went into System Preferences>Displays (not my first time there) and a window oppened by itself saying that the display setting was about to be changed and maybe certain software would not be showed properly in a resolution below 800X600 (sorry, that's my translation. I use a Spanish SO).
After that, the resolution changed to 640X480 and the Display panel became useless. It's impossible to set any other resolution and on the refresh settins apears that message: <<do not localize>>. Under the Resolutions Field appears <<<DO NOT LOCALIZE>>> as well.
    I tryed:
    * Repair disk Permissions
    * Reset PRAM
    * Reset PMU
    * I did a hardware test (the long one). No problems found.
I was not able to use the system disks (the ones that came with my computer) because the image on the screen appears completly distorted and i am not able to navigate through the menus. I was able to use Hardware Test because the buttons where showed in the middle of the screen.
I tryed to use the Snow Leopard DVD, but the part of the welcome window in wich the buttons are was out of the screen and i had no chance to click on them.
I have temporarily fixed that using a ten days trial version of SwitchRes X. Everything works fine now, but the Display preferences panel from MacOs stays "in coma". So i guess it's not a hardware problem, but a Snow Leopard Problem. If in ten days i don't find a fix for that, i'm gonna be forced to buy the program, a really good software, i have to say, but a software i shoulnd't need.
After been able to recover my original resolution via SwitchRes X, I checked the disk and it was ok. I repaired it anyway. Back to my desktop, i checked the permisions and everything was fine except for this message:
"Advertencia: el archivo SUID “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgen t” se ha modificado y no se reparará."
I got this message since the first time i checked permissions and its well know by other users. It is supposed to be normal.
    Anyway, it didn't worked.
    I'll appreciate any help. Thanks!

"I was not able to use the system disks 'cos the image on the screen appears completly distorted and i am not able to navigate the menus."
Never ran across that type of problem on Apple's message boards.
"I have temporarily fixed that using a ten days trial version of SwitchRes X. Everything works fine now but the Display preferences panel from MacOs, wich stays "in coma"."
In that case, are you now able to boot off your install DVD? If so, run the +"repair disk"+ option, when done boot back to desktop & run repair permissions.

  • External display issues when waking display from sleep

After waking my external display from sleep (the entire Macbook was not asleep, just the external display), the garbled colored dots kept appearing at the top and bottom of the screen, only then for the entire display to go black, then about 5-10 seconds later the images comes back, but with the garbled colored dots at the bottom. It will keep doing this over and over again.
It's only happened once so far, but I seem to remember reading about some issues when waking from sleep with the new unibody Macbooks with regards to external displays. Is this a known issue with these Macbooks?

There have been similar reports. However, not all external displays in combination with a MacBook will exhibit this problem. Thus, it seems either display specific or something that is caused by a cross between one display and a MacBook.
I assume that you are using one of Appe's mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters to connect to the external display. In that case have you installed the latest firmware update for the adapter?

  • Unable to launch several applications in Snow Leopard/ iDVD issues

I upgraded to Snow Leopard 4 days ago and am having trouble launching several applications. The list includes:
    -CuteFTP for Mac
    -Adobe CS3: illustrator, flash, InDesign
    -Cisco VPN client
I've tried selecting the "use rosetta to open" option in "get info" on the affected applications with no luck.
Additionally, while burning a DVD I was unable to switch applications when iDVD was multiplexing and writing (~ 30 minutes total.) After the disk was done, the Finder toolbar was gone, and I couldn't re-launch Finder. I had to do a hard restart.
Did I miss something during installation? This ranks with the original OSX (10.0) transition in terms of disruption.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Eddie

CuteFTP hasn't had an update since June 2008. CyberDuck is free and there is a new 64 bit version in beta here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14426
Adobe said they haven't tested CS3 with SL - you can try their support forums for better info: http://forums.adobe.com/community/creativesuites/creativesuites_macintosh?view=d iscussions
Cisco VPN - There is a thread with a lot of information, and some solutions here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2131308&tstart=0&messageID=100 89199
I don't know about an iDVD problem like you had. I've been burning fine with Toast 10, although I do miss my contextual menu's. I have to launch the program first now instead of just right clicking on a file and choosing Burn with Toast. Apple removed almost all of the contextual menu's in favor of an improved 'Services' system that I never used in the past.
Leopard caused as many programs to quit working when Apple dropped support for OS9. There were hundreds of complaints. SL does change the basic structure to support 64bit apps, and seems to have caused minor problems with a wide range of programs, while other programs of the same type seem to work great.
The worst problems I'm seeing are related to HP Printer driver issues. Luckily I switched to Brother Printers a couple of years ago. Brother had their drivers ready months before SL's release date and they download as soon as you install the OS and run 'Software Update'.

  • Ilustrator CS4+Snow Leopard Profile issues

Seems like something is not working in Cs4 Illustrator with Snow Leopard. Can someone give it a try to verify.
When I print to my Epson 3800 from Illust. It's not matching the same image printed via PS Cs4. ( It should if you follow a controlled workflow--which I do)
At first thought it was a color management issue, but everything is synchronized via Bridge, and I am using the same print settings, paper profiles , etc in both apps.
I then tried saving as a pdf in Illustrator. Same thing is occuring. Seems like the profile is not "sticking".
I did not have this issue before Snow Leopard.
If I open the Illustrator created PDF via Photoshop, then everything is ok....what is happening?
( have the newest drivers from Epson)
    Norbert

    No advice?
I have resorted to saving as eps from Illustrator and then creating a PDF from the eps using distiller. Then the profile for images seem to be recognized. Otherwise if I save as pdf directly from Illustrator to pdf, images are too overexposed--as are colors too light. (same issue occurs if directly printing via Illust,)

  • Anyone using Logic 8 with 10.6 Snow Leopard ? issues ?

Using Logic 8 with 10.6, I'm aware there is an issue quitting Logic without first closing the current project.
Are there any other issues? any performance boost/ benefit?
I'm running an 06 Macbook Pro 17" 2 Gb Ram 10.5.8 currently and considering an upgrade to 10.6
Audio units I use: Revalver MKIII and Amplitube

    (blushes embarrassedly)
No, my coffee was still too hot...
There are quite a few issues running L8 and L9 with Snow Leopard. My (and also from some of the pro's here) standard answer is hold off Snow Leopard until it has stabilized a bit more. Try to wait until 10.6.4 or 5 at least. Leopard only became reasonably stable with L8 at version 10.5.4, 0-3 were problematic.
Just check this forum for user reports when SL gets updated.
Since SL was released, the number of Q's on this forum seems to have more than doubled. That is strong circumstancial evidence for SL-Logic stability/reliability problems. It may be the price to pay for the price we pay.

  • Need help with Snow Leopard compatibility issue

We have a new iMac in (with Snow Leopard) and have loaded all our programs. Due to budgets, we have not made the jump to CS4 and are still on CS3 (waiting for 5). We work in an InDesign/InCopy workflow.
In launching InDesign on the MAc with Snow Leopard, we have noticed that the assignment folders are nonexistant and within the program you can't even open an assignment window. When you reopen on a system without Snow Leopard, the individual assignments are there, but the program states it can't find the main assignment, so it's cancelling out the assignments if opened on the Snow Leopard unit.
Does anyone have any info on compatibility issues with Indesign CS3 and Snow Leopard? My tech guy found nothing on this before we ordered the new system.

First things first. CS5 was announced today and preorders are being accepted.
I believe if you upgrade to CS4 you'll get a free copy of CS5. This is important because if you're upgrading a suite, tiered pricing makes CS3 to CS4 $200 less than waiting til CS5 comes out.
That out of the way, is everyone fully patched to CS3 5.0.4? Is Snow Leopard fully updated to 10.6.3? Do you have full read/write permission on the server?

  • TLS and Snow Leopard server issues

I have a customer with Snow Leopard server running mail services. A few clients cannot email them due to what we think is a TLS related issue. Their host has TLS enabled for the mail server and they receive the below error message when sending to my customer:

The host that cannot send seems to think it's a Postfix configuration issue but I don't know where to begin. It's not a firewall issue as we've tried that with no success.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Mac Snow Leopard install issues w/ CS?

I'm upgrading my Mac OS to Snow Leopard (10.6.3), and prior to doing so, I decided to go online and search to see if there were any issues or recos I could fine re: the upgrade. I'm glad I did. I seems there are a few problems with Adobe CS softwares – saving files and software crashes with Snow L.
I am running all CS4 versions, with the exception of InDesign (CS6). Did Mac/Adobe resolve the issues with the 10.6.3 version?

CS4 should work fine without any issue on Snow Leopard , there could be problem that could be system or application specific which we can try and help you with.

  • Snow Leopard Email Issues -totally lost, need help

I am a fairly new iMac user so please answer with a "dummies" version.
OK, I installed Snow Leopard and have had issues sending email. I have Verizon DSL - who in their ultimate wisdom just made some changes on Sept. 1 and are now blocking port 25. I have a .mac email account that seems to be working ok, but the smtp settings are for .me and I can't change anything because it's all greyed out. I also have several AOL accounts that used to arrive on my mac with no issues, and I could send email from them as well. I now have difficulty sending email and must enter a password every time (annoying to say the least). At first, I thought I had a Verizon problem, so I followed Verizon's instructions and changed the port setting to 527 (or close to it, I don't exactly remember but it was the correct setting specified by Verizon) but after that I couldn't even get my email so I changed it back to port 993. I guess my biggest problem is trying to figure out who screwed up the email - is it Snow Leopard, Is it Verizon, is it AOL???? All I know is I'm at my wits end of what to do and how to do it. I thought about deleting all the accounts and starting over but I don't want to lose all my past messages. If anyone has any suggestions I'll be happy to try something different... please remember baby steps needed here. Thanks ever so much!

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
First of all, any place you are observing to see Port 993 is probably the location of the port for the Incoming Server -- 993 would never work for the Outgoing. Are you seeing that at Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced?
To adjust the port setting for Outgoing Servers, then in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information click on the arrows beside the name of the SMTP and choose Edit Server List. Once in that window, and if the name of the server is correctly entered, click on the Advanced Tab. Once under that tab, then for the MobileMe account (.mac/.me) choose Use Custom Port, enter 587, and furthermore enter the Username and Password. Do similarly for the Verizon account -- check or not check to use SSL per Verizon's advice. The AOL account will probably work with Use Default Port, and not SSL.
    Keep us posted.
