Snow Leopard Email Issues -totally lost, need help

I am a fairly new iMac user so please answer with a "dummies" version.
OK, I installed Snow Leopard and have had issues sending email. I have Verizon DSL - who in their ultimate wisdom just made some changes on Sept. 1 and are now blocking port 25. I have a .mac email account that seems to be working ok, but the smtp settings are for .me and I can't change anything because it's all greyed out. I also have several AOL accounts that used to arrive on my mac with no issues, and I could send email from them as well. I now have difficulty sending email and must enter a password every time (annoying to say the least). At first, I thought I had a Verizon problem, so I followed Verizon's instructions and changed the port setting to 527 (or close to it, I don't exactly remember but it was the correct setting specified by Verizon) but after that I couldn't even get my email so I changed it back to port 993. I guess my biggest problem is trying to figure out who screwed up the email - is it Snow Leopard, Is it Verizon, is it AOL???? All I know is I'm at my wits end of what to do and how to do it. I thought about deleting all the accounts and starting over but I don't want to lose all my past messages. If anyone has any suggestions I'll be happy to try something different... please remember baby steps needed here. Thanks ever so much!

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
First of all, any place you are observing to see Port 993 is probably the location of the port for the Incoming Server -- 993 would never work for the Outgoing. Are you seeing that at Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced?
To adjust the port setting for Outgoing Servers, then in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information click on the arrows beside the name of the SMTP and choose Edit Server List. Once in that window, and if the name of the server is correctly entered, click on the Advanced Tab. Once under that tab, then for the MobileMe account (.mac/.me) choose Use Custom Port, enter 587, and furthermore enter the Username and Password. Do similarly for the Verizon account -- check or not check to use SSL per Verizon's advice. The AOL account will probably work with Use Default Port, and not SSL.
Keep us posted.

  • Automator in Snow Leopard - Newbie MacBook Pro Owner Needs Help

    All,
I'm new to Macs and am having a devil of a time figuring out Automator. I am trying to use an Automator script to open my library of photos and save them as JPEGs. I am using a "Save for Web" automator script I downloaded from Apple.com; it's supposed to open files and save them as JPEGs.
I can get the script to run on a single file or multiple selected files, but not on folders. I want to be able to select my entire pictures library and run the script against all of it, at one time.
I'm trying to create a Service. I have it set for "Service receives selected files or folders in Finder." Shouldn't this allow me to run the script against a folder and have it affect all sub-folders and files? If I pick my "Pictures" folder in Finder, and then click Finder - Services, it says "No Services Apply."
I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here; can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

Thanks; I made and saved this service, and then I went to the Finder window and clicked on the root folder for my pictures on my desktop. Then I clicked the Finder menu and scrolled down to Services. When the Services menu expands, it still says "No Services Apply."
Clearly I don't understand how to get automator scripts running, so if anyone can help me out with this, I'd appreciate it.
    Regards,
    Scott

  • In testing 9 and X, "Compare Docs" we have a critical issue and really need help!

For years we have used Acrobat 7 to do PDF compares and we love it!  However, the company recently advised we must upgrade to 9 and then eventually to X.  In testing 9 and X, Compare Docs we have a critical issue and really need help.  Our PDFs are produced by IT in a batch process and one of our main, critical functions is to compare previous PDFs to current PDFs;  however, in using 9 the Compare screen automatically sets the Doc Description for our PDFs to "Scanned Doc" and does not produce any differences! If you try to change the setting to Reports --it totally shuts down both documents without running!  Version 7 runs the compare of the same PDFs  beautifully, pointing out all the differences, as usual!  Has this every happen to anyone?  Do you know what we can do to our PDFs to allow version 9 to do the compare and produce results?  Why is 9 treating these non-scanned PDF docs as such?  Thanks so much for any help or insight you can give me on this issue!

Trying to get icloud, installed snow leopard, now it says I need OSX, but my processor isn't right for it. Is this possible? Do I need to buy a nw computer? will I loose all my mobile me storage?

You will lose the entire contents of your iDisk whether or not you migrate to MobileMe as there is no equivalent in iCloud and MobileMe will be terminated at the end of June. You will need to download any data which you don't have on your Mac already.
Snow Leopard is not compliant with iCloud and most of the facilities will not work. You can migrate from MobileMe to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard: when asked to confirm that your Mac is running Lion just lie and say 'yes'. Of course you won't be able to access iCloud directly from your Mac.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it.
This will be the situation with Snow Leopard when you have migrated:
Your email, calendars, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud. Contacts and Bookmarks cannot be migrated from a Snow Leopard Mac.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery, will continue to work as before until next June.
Syncing of Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items and Keychains between Macs, and Mail Accounts, Mail Rules, System Preferences, Signatures & Smart Mailboxes between Macs & iOS devices, will cease altogether.
You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).
There are a couple of third-party solutions which may be of interest.
BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion. A single user licence (two machines allowed) is $49.99.
Soho Organizer can sync Calendars and Contacts with iCloud on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. A single user licence (multiple machines allowed) is $99.99.

  • When will we get a fix for the Snow Leopard Compatibility issue??

When will we get a fix for the Snow Leopard Compatibility issue?
I am growing impatient not being able to use cross dissolve or titles.
Its going to be a pain having to back out to OS 10.5. This is beginning to be like Windows Vista.

You don't say what "..Snow Leopard Compatibility issue.." you're having.
My titles and Dissolves - and everything else - work perfectly with iMovie HD 6 and with iMovie '09 in Snow Leopard.
Perhaps you need to revert to QuickTime 7 ..just in case you over-wrote QT 7 with Snow Leopard's own QuickTime X when you upgraded to SL.
QT7 and QT X both sit happily alongside each other in Snow Leopard ..you might want to give that a try.
But I have no problem with any aspect of iMHD6 nor iM09 (..and no trouble with "stills"..) using Snow Leopard on a "late '08" MacBook Pro.
I haven't yet installed SL (Family Pack) on my Mac Mini ..I'll let SL throw away my QT7 on that, and will see if that causes any problems with iMovie. If it does, I'll then download and re-install QT7 and see if that fixes any problems. But don't hold your breath ..I may report back tomorrow, but today I'm pretty busy! I'll do my best, though..

  • Need help with Snow Leopard compatibility issue

We have a new iMac in (with Snow Leopard) and have loaded all our programs. Due to budgets, we have not made the jump to CS4 and are still on CS3 (waiting for 5). We work in an InDesign/InCopy workflow.
In launching InDesign on the MAc with Snow Leopard, we have noticed that the assignment folders are nonexistant and within the program you can't even open an assignment window. When you reopen on a system without Snow Leopard, the individual assignments are there, but the program states it can't find the main assignment, so it's cancelling out the assignments if opened on the Snow Leopard unit.
Does anyone have any info on compatibility issues with Indesign CS3 and Snow Leopard? My tech guy found nothing on this before we ordered the new system.

First things first. CS5 was announced today and preorders are being accepted.
I believe if you upgrade to CS4 you'll get a free copy of CS5. This is important because if you're upgrading a suite, tiered pricing makes CS3 to CS4 $200 less than waiting til CS5 comes out.
That out of the way, is everyone fully patched to CS3 5.0.4? Is Snow Leopard fully updated to 10.6.3? Do you have full read/write permission on the server?

  • How do I upgrade my Mac OS X 10.4.11 to a newer version? I purchased Snow Leopard but it said I needed an Intel. Please help!

I have a eMac 10.4.11. How can I get it up to date and compatible? I purchased Snow Leopard but it would not load because I need Intel? I would appreciate any help with this. Thank you!

Check you processor speed before spending money on 10.5. The 10.5 installer required a minimum 867mHz processor; many eMacs have 700 or 800 mHz processors--not fast enough for 10.5.
Doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu will show your processor's speed where I've indicated below with the lower of the two red arrows:

  • Snow Leopard - Printer Issue, Really Need Suggestions

Yesterday I completed my upgrade to Snow Leopard.  Had waited as long as I could, finally gave in.  Now I'm having a problem with one printer and I'm at this point out of ideas and could use some suggestions.
This is for my small business, my office.  I have two Airport Extreme's.  One connects cable modem to my network (physically located in a distant part of my office), second is connected to my DSL modem via hub, and I have a hub line off of that Airport Extreme (located at my desk).  I am also connecting my Ethernet 1 port to a hub (same hub that the below HP-4200n mentioned is connected to).  I have multiple printers scattered throughout the office, all connected to the network through hubs.  Up until yesterday I was able to print from my computer to any printer in the office with no problems, and has been that way for several years.  Now that I've upgraded to Snow Leopard on my own computer I am no longer able to connect to or print to my HP-4200n which is located about two feet from my desk (printer is connected to a hub, and that hub is connected to the Airport Extreme at my desk).  I am still able to print to all other printers.  And I can go to other computers (one running Leopard and one running OS 9!), connected to the hub, and print to the HP-4200n with no problem from either of those.
Thus far (in addition to yanking on my hair) I have removed all my printers from the list (they were all there after the Snow Leopard upgrade), and have installed them one at a time.  I've also removed all printers and the installed only the HP-4200n.  I've been to the HP site which confirmed that the Snow Leopard disk contained all of the correct drivers, and the HP-4200 series is on the list.  Just for the heck of it I also went ahead and installed a new release of HP drivers just to see if they'd released something (like the "my HP-4200 won't print driver fix"!), and that didn't change anything.
The only other "quirky" thing that I've noticed is that before, sitting at my computer I could print to any of the other printers and it didn't make a difference which Airport Extreme I was using....but now, I seem to have to use the one that is at my desk (that is the DSL feed, ano  has a hub line off of that).  If I'm on the other Airport Extreme, no connections.
That's where I am, and I'm out of ideas.  I really don't want to have to disconnect the wiring from all the hubs as it took a bit to figure this all out and get it to work the first time.  And since I haven't physically changed anything yet, and since I can print to the HP-4200n from the other computer....that seems to verify that all network connections are still good anyway.  This seems to be something isolated and connected to the Snow Leopard upgrade.
I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions!

I still think that your best options are (1) revert to what your Mac was running before or (2) bite the bullet and unify your network.
    Some questions:
    1) You imply that the DSL modem is connected to a hub.  If that modem is strictly a modem without any router functionality, unless it has some mojo going there should be a router between that modem and a hub.  A hub shouldn't connect directly to a modem unless the modem can distribute multiple IP addresses.
    2) I tried to map your network, but you gave just enough information to give me a headache without being able to complete the map.
    3) It seems that your Mac Pro has two Ethernet ports and that you have one port connected to each network.  I have no experience with how that might be made to work, but is it possible that at some point someone did some tweaking of the software on your Mac Pro and that installing Snow Leopard undid those tweaks?
    4) I'm not sure what you mean by "it didn't make a difference which AirPort Extreme I was using".  Does this suggest that you were somehow switching between them?

  • Snow Leopard - No Output devices found - (Audio)  Help?

    Folks
I just installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Mini which I use as my home media centre. It upgraded fine except for the lack of audio devices it now reports. Ive been combing forum threads but to no avail.
    Appreciate any help or suggestions
    Model Name: Mac mini
    Model Identifier: Macmini1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz

    Update:
Syetm profiler told me I had no sound device. I did the PRAM thing and the plist thing. no help.
I then pulled opened the mac up and checked to make sure the daugther boards were properly seated ... I was desperate.
When I rebooted the machine, it came up WITH SOUND. I dont think it was me opening the box as it could have also been me booting the machine up with no toslink f/o cable plugged into the output jack.
When the mini restarted I got the bing over the system speaker, and once the machine had started the audio worked perfectly and I plugged the cable back in.
Since the sound has been working I have lost it a couple of time since, particularly after using DVD player. this has ofetn happened as I think it gets tripped up when swthching between 5.1 audio out and normal output. Again this sorts itself out if rebooting with the output cable disconnected.
I hate these type of issues as it seems so erratic. Let me know if starting with the cable out sorts things out.

  • How can I transfer my Entourage 2004 (Snow Leopard) emails to my new MacBookPro (Lion)

Just got a new 15" MacBook Pro (Lion) and would like to move my saved emails from my older Intel MacBook Pro 17" (Snow Leopard). I enabled sharing, but cannot open Entourage or find a way to import or export the emails. I can copy the archived emails file to the new computer, but there's no way to get the emails into Mail. I read that getting a trial in MSFT Office 2011 and importing the emails to Outlook from the saved archives might be the only solution.
Before I go through this process, I'd like to ask if there's any other way to accomplish this migration.

Copy the Microsoft User Data folder to the new computer's /Home/Documents/ folder. Open Mail and select Import Mailboxes from the File menu. Click the radio button for Entourage and follow instructions. Similarly, you can import contacts into Address Book and, I think, iCal.
    Correction:
iCal will import from Entourage. However, Address Book does not in a similar way. You need to create a vCard file from Entourage itself. If I remember correctly you can create a temporary folder, then export your Entourage contacts as vCards and save in the folder. Transfer the folder to the new computer. Open Address Book. Open the folder of vCards. Select all of them and drag the selection into Address Books list section - the middle section.
