Snow Leopard Family Pack but still need one copy of 10.5
I have 4 Intel Macs and 1 PPC (G5, Dual, Tower). My OS' look like this:
PPC Tower - 10.4
Intel Tower - 10.4
Intel Tower - 10.4
Mini Mac - 10.5
MacBook Pro - 10.5
The MacBook and Mini Mac came with 10.5 so I don't have the OS disk.
I am ordering the Snow Leopard Family Pack to upgrade the Intel machines.
Does anybody know how (given the parameters above) to get my PPC 10.4 to
10.5 (Leopard) without buying a new License? Seems like I have the License
already but I don't have the disks so I can move it to another serial number.

Do note that the PPC machine won't run Snow Leopard and you'll need a retail Leopard disk to get it to that or combine it with a Leopard family pack ($199) and use it to get the Intel towers to Leopard, followed by a Snow Leopard family pack ($49) or get the Tiger to Snow Leopard boxed set family pack for $229 for the towers (which won't work for the PPC). No. The license is a legal agreement, not a technical measure to restrict installation or duplication. There's nothing to stop you from installing it on 20 Macs in your household save that you are subject to a binding legal agreement that says you have permission to install it on no more than 5. If you break the terms of the contract, you may be subject to civil litigation. If someone steals your copy and uses it without authorization, they are similarly liable.
In practice, Apple trusts you to be honest because, frankly, until it gets to a certain point, it's just not worth the money to file a complaint against you. That's not to say that they couldn't, or even shouldn't enforce the terms of the license agreement; caveat sycophanta. -
Time Machine in Snow Leopard much better but still problematic
I've found Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule to be much faster under Snow Leopard than under previous versions of the OS, and I've found that TM seems to avoid some of the extra backups that always seemed to get scheduled:

When OSX wakes from sleep, Time Machine immediately checks to see if a backup is needed. Since one was done less than an hour before, it doesn't do another one. This message is just telling you why it didn't do a backup upon wake. (Under Leopard, it would do one automatically, which some folks complained about. So Apple changed it.)

Most likely, you did a manual backup a few minutes before this. That does not re-set the schedule; but when the next scheduled backup time arrives, TM checks, and if less than 10 minutes has elapsed, resets the schedule and tells you why it didn't do the scheduled backup. Another thing foks complained about under Leopard that Apple changed. -
Have upgraded to Snow Leopard. Pages icon still on dock but wont open. Also I cant view my documents. Do I have to buy Pages from ITunes? Thankyou

Trying to get icloud, installed snow leopard, now it says I need OSX, but my processor isn't right for it. Is this possible? Do I need to buy a nw computer? will I loose all my mobile me storage?
You will lose the entire contents of your iDisk whether or not you migrate to MobileMe as there is no equivalent in iCloud and MobileMe will be terminated at the end of June. You will need to download any data which you don't have on your Mac already.
Snow Leopard is not compliant with iCloud and most of the facilities will not work. You can migrate from MobileMe to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard: when asked to confirm that your Mac is running Lion just lie and say 'yes'. Of course you won't be able to access iCloud directly from your Mac.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it.
This will be the situation with Snow Leopard when you have migrated:
Your email, calendars, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud. Contacts and Bookmarks cannot be migrated from a Snow Leopard Mac.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery, will continue to work as before until next June.
Syncing of Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items and Keychains between Macs, and Mail Accounts, Mail Rules, System Preferences, Signatures & Smart Mailboxes between Macs & iOS devices, will cease altogether.
You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).
There are a couple of third-party solutions which may be of interest.
BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion. A single user licence (two machines allowed) is $49.99.
Soho Organizer can sync Calendars and Contacts with iCloud on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. A single user licence (multiple machines allowed) is $99.99. -
Everyone keeps talking about an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard for $29 but I cannot find it anywhere-any suggestions?
Good news for current buyers ... single user SL is down to $19, 5-user family-pack is down to $29 ... I would buy the 5-user license to avoid need ing to buy it again after Apple stops selling it.

I came across this online and i want to know is it safe to do this:
Backup your User folders to an external drive. This should preserve your documents, photos, music, etc. If you store those things in locations not in the User folder, make sure to copy those over too.
Insert the Snow Leopard disc. Restart your Mac and hold down C to boot to your DVD drive.
Go to Utilities in the menu bar once the installer pops up and select “Disk Utility.”
Find the drive in the sidebar where Lion is installed, select it and navigate to the Partition tab.
Click on the drop down menu under Partition Layout and select “1 Partition.” Hit Apply.
Now navigate to the Erase tab and make sure “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” is selected, then hit Erase to delete all data on the drive.
Quit Disk Utility to get back to the Snow Leopard installer and proceed with the install.
Restore your User folder and documents from your backup.
Run Software Update to get everything current, install your apps from your original install media and update those as well.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
To boot from the Recovery HD restart the computer. After the chime hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
If this doesn't help, then you can proceed to reinstall Snow Leopard as follows:
Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard. I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.

I had to remove Mavericks and do a reinstall on 10.8.5 but still need help...
I have been trying to undo my Mavericks upgrade in October and after considerable effort I am mostly got back to 10.8.5 OS but still need a bit of help. I just want the previous OS back in place then I'll try Mavericks soon....
1) I never seem to pay attention so is 10.8.5 the last OSX prior? As long as it isn't Mavericks, I want to get it installed.
2) I had to reformat my iMac so I have a residual elements from 10.9 and one issue that I had before was permissions. Every number of files either on other hard drives or sometimes in my same user folder was asking for permission and authentication to simply move a file.. A popular one you'll see at the bottom the person/whatever/ problem known as fetching. Could someone just give me the general reason of this fetching and permissions problem that I ran into? Better yet since I just want to avoid it altogether into the future tell me what's the best way to assure it disappears forever.
3) Another, which is kind of a big ticket item for me is the backup/restore/cover your (!!!) system. I was a good little iMac User and had Time Machine backed up for a period prior to the Mavericks install. I'm a little bit upset that TM isn't 100%....but what is...? I need another backup/restore system in place and that's what I am looking for recommendations on. An item that saved me a bit was that I had OS 10.8.3 on an external hard drive. The problem with that one was it was on a partition, on one of the drives requiring to be reformatted. It worked as a bridge consolidating files and all but was a big headache as a partition on the external. Recovery Disk did it's part but wasn't enough as well. Is there a simple/easy idea...clone, disk images, boot from an external drive… ?
4) iPhoto (9.4.3) currently will not open the libraries which iPhoto (9.5) converted. Is there way to go back? Seems the App Store and Software update don't like something. I'm getting into a loop with App Store, iPhoto and the OS. Either the software needs operating system ... then the App Store says it's incompatible or some other complaint. Right now I have 9.4.3 iPhoto installed for OSX 10.8.5 and was only able to create a new library and the converted ones currently do not open.
Thanks to your help10.8.5 is the lates ML edition. I use TM and also carbon copy cloner as my second backup. If I were you and you have a TM backup prior to Mavericks I would try another restore at bootup. You should erase your drive first in that process using disk utitlites and then use TM to put back you apps and files. The other choice is to do an internet recovery and then use TM to restore your apps and files. That should fix the permissions issue. I did the same thing and all was OK including getting my original iPhoto progam (9.4.3), iphoto11 and photos back.

Upgraded from osx snow leopard to lion and still no iCloud settings in System Preferences, why?
I have the exact same issue, and no Profiles for me under System. My system was upgraded from 10.6 as soon as Lion came out and I've never had the icon.
I have had iCloud set up by creating an account within Mail, Contacts & Calendars - but in this setup my Mobile Documents folder, my iCloud "Documents and Data", never synchronized with my other devices. That is why I began wondering why I don't have the iCon as I have seen other Macs that came with 10.7 installed factory. -
I want to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Yosemite, but can't because I only have 1Gb Memory. Can I add more memory, then do the upgrade? What should I buy?

On the RAM issue, I fully agree with what Etresoft has written. I have just visited various sites, including OWC, Mactracker and iFixit and your Mac seems to have the Penryn processor. It will address 6GB of RAM which is more than enough for your use.
Where I differ from him, is Lion. The last big cat which I liked was probably Snow Leopard, and thereafter now Yosemite. There has been a lot of successes with your generation migrating to Yosemite, but with 6GB of RAM. Admittedly there were also problems for some, but I have observed even more successes even after initial problems. Mostly these problems were caused by adware or crapware installations. (Thank you Etresoft for a wonderful utility!)
Your iMac also has a SATA interface for a 3GB SSD, which is good enough. We have a Mac here with the same interface, still with a normal conventional stock HD running Yosemite, but only 4GB of RAM and it is running fine.
Of course the newer technology processors, faster RAM, PCI SSD, greater bandwidth on the newer Macs perform much better. But as I am on the older side, (ha ha), some of the 'vintage' Macs are still my favourites to use for certain tasks. Like using 9.09 for doing certain things and then converting the results afterwards for completion!
But, once again, it is your decision and only you can decide as you yourself knows your own circumstances better. Weigh up the options, considering what Etresoft has pointed out vs what Yosemite offers ito continuous support, security and features. There are a lot of your type of iMacs out there, and some of the users spoke about feeling like having a new Mac. There were others, who were wailing though. You could of course, also follow the advice of a test installation on an external and testdrive it, or wait for the release of 10.10.2 which I read somewhere is eminently close?

Hi all, I'm trying to download a film from iTunes onto my iPad but downloaded the HD version instead of SD and don't have the room to download it. Have removed everything I can to make space but still need another 1.2 GB. Is there any way I can delete it so I can delete the version I wanted, or even better change to the SD version? The film is still queuing in the downloads list. I've tried edit and delete but that doesn't work. I also can't re-download the film from iTunes.

I deleted my Mail app sometime back. I reinstalled it again, today, on my Macbook Snow Leopard Mac OS but when I try launching Mail, it says ' You have Mail version 4.0(1075/1085). It can't be used on Mac OS X version 10.6.8(Build 10K549)",
The Mail version for your machine is 4.6 (1085) You can get it via the Combo updater. Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Then follow with software updates to pick up the most recent security and iTunes updates.
