Snow Leopard has ruined my browsers

I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard a few days ago, and ever since my internet browsing has been crippled. I use Google Chrome but the following problems persist across all browsers:
- Websites randomly won't load, I'll just get the 'Oops! Google Chrome cannot find this web page' message. Sometimes if I refresh a few times the site will load, other times it won't load at all.
- Many images won't load, whether they be on Facebook, Google Images or DeviantArt, I just get the little 'torn picture' thumbnail.
- Links are unresponsive. I'll click a link and nothing will happen, despite the destination appearing in the status bar when I hover over the link.
I must stress that I never encountered any of these issues as recently as one week ago when I was using Leopard.
Does anyone have any idea what is happening, and if there are any fixes?
Thanks for your help,
Chris.

If you had any modifications to your network preferences on Leopard, maybe some didn't come through. The symptoms could be caused by incorrect DNS settings, incorrect proxy settings, things like that which affect how a computer finds a domain. Double-check what they are set to.
Also, if you had used any network filtering software in Leopard (anti-virus, JavaScript blockers, firewalls, anonymizers, non-Apple parental control filters, VPN, privacy enhancers, etc.) and they have not been upgraded for Snow Leopard, they might not be filtering your network correctly.

  • Mail in Snow Leopard has broken. Keeps resending a large file attachment. Make it stop!

Our 2009 iMac running Snow Leopard has hit a snag with mail. After trying to send a bunch of attached photos, Mail stopped receiving messages and continually tries to resend the large message, even though we have done our best to delete it. Even when we do, a few minutes later, it will pop into the outbox again and start all over. We are now using Thunderbird but would like to get Mail back as it has all our organized folders on it. I've called our ISP and the problem is definitely with Mail, not our account. What now?

    Hi Bee,
The attachents add up to 34.1 Mb.
The messages appear in a Recovered Messages (Telus) folder that shows up at the bottom of our list of folders. That folder fills up with copies of the 34.1 Mb email. After about 15 minutes there are 34 of them. I can only delete them one at a time after clicking on them. Trying to select all or batch delete unread causes mail to slow down to a crawl and affects all other applications. "Edit Message" doesn't seem to be an option.

  • Front Row on Snow Leopard has audio out of sync on movies and TV shows and some movies wont show images.

I have an iMac Core Duo 2GHz (yes, first Intel iMac). I have Snow Leopard v10.6.8 (latest/last MacOS version I could load) with the most recent Security Update (2013-003).
I have two issues with Front Row:
    • Some of the movie files will not show the images, but I can hear the audio.
    • On other movies and TV shows they start fine, but within a few minutes the audio is out of sync with the images, running about 3-5 seconds ahead... Looks like a bad dub of a Japanese movie from the 60s.
Now, I know it's related to Front Row, because when I jump over to iTunes and start the same movie or TV show it begins where I left off in Front Row, but images are fine and audio is suddenly in-sync.
However, with Snow Leopard being 2 major upgrades back - 3 if you count the upcoming Mavericks release - I doubt this registers as a "brouhaha" on Apple's radar screens. Then, again, maybe the spirit of Steve won't tolerate this Microsoft-like quirk, even if my iMac is still chugging along after 7 years and multiple MacOS X upgrades & updates...

I think I found my answer... or culprit. It has to do with Snow Leopard, and my iMac Core Duo, being the last of the dying breed of 32-bit systems, and that iTunes v11.x is 64-bit (heavily, at least)...
Guess I need to break down and replace my 7 year old iMac, even though it still works beautifully (otherwise).

  • IMac running Snow Leopard has appeared to somehow have reverted to Leopard?

Our 24 inch iMac purchased in September 2009 was purchased with Snow Leopard pre-installed. It came with a Snow Leopard reinstallation disk. It never occurred to me that it might not be running Snow Leopard. I've always kept up with software updates and today I opened software update to search for a new update that included that Mac App Store. Nothing appeared. Downloaded the 10.6.6 combo update and it told me that it couldn't install because I wasn't running OSX 10.6. Quick check on About This Mac and lo and behold I wasn't, I was running 10.5.8.
I am 95% sure that I have seen About This Mac showing that the iMac has 10.6 installed before now. If it helps, I'm also running iLife '09, Office for Mac 2008, Sophos Antivirus for Mac, iKey and various small downloadable games such as Peggle. I'm running a virus scan now but I don't think thats causing it.
I know I can reinstall OSX 10.6 from the reinstallation disk that came with the Mac but I'd prefer not to if I don't have to because I don't want to loose all our settings. Also using a 1TB Time Capsule so back up is not a problem.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Reinstall Snow Leopard using the drop-in disc (I'm almost positive that it came with Leopard and included a drop-in upgrade disc). It will only replace the OS components and basic Apple apps, such as TextEdit, Mail, and Safari, *without touching anything else*. Then, run Software Update and bring it up to 10.6.6 and the other things that came out since you got the machine.

  • I have just purchased an iMAC. O/S is Lion. I just cannot access the files in my Microsoft network drive which my  macpro snow leopard has no problem. Looks like it is just the Lion O/S has the problem.  The file I needed to access are my photo files.

I have an iMAC running Lion cannot access my Microsoft Network drive.  It sees it on Finder but said connection failed.  By other Macpro Laptop which run Leopard has no problem at all. It lreads and load my photos from the RAID Drive. I am sure some asked the question before but it is new to me. That was the reason I am not upgrading my Macpro to Lion yet.  was it a bug in Lion networking area?
    Thanks for the help !

You need to move to Windows 7, because Apple is now releasing a new OS X version annually and it's playing havoc with people's hardware and software.
Windows 7 will get support until 2020, that's 8 years of software stability, however you do need to make System Restore disks, boot disk and another on a hard drive to self restore (like TimeMachine is for OS X)
Apple has no plans to change their currrent behavior as all they care about is selling new hardware with a shiny new OS X verison on it.
If you wait to move, what will happen is you'll lose that full 8 years and will have to swtich to a newer Windows sooner
Windows 7 machines are still widely avaialble, despite Windows 8 (a failure) being pushed currently.
Running three OS X operating systems on one machine is quite a chore reserved for only seasoned computer geeks, then it's only going to last X months as the next OS X version will be released, then the next a year after that.
Another method would be to get a virtual machine software (virtualbox is free) and install Windows 7 into that to ease your transitition if you cant' spring for a Windows 7 machine, preferablly a tower that will last a long time.
Here is a method to run Snow Leopard in Parallels, however it's a unapproced hack and not for the comptuer newbie.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
We have no control over Apple's OS X release cycle, nor the third party developers who make their own decisions what to support.
Our only choice as users to stop using both products and seek software/hardware stability.

  • Move from Tiger to Snow Leopard Has Slowed Down MBP Fall '08

I had to upgrade to snow leopard recently to use new releases of some software I use (like MacSpeech Dictate). Since upgrading, the speed of my mac has slowed significantly. Expose used to happen immediately. Now, it takes 4-7 seconds. When I switch from one program that's already open to another program that's already open, it often takes 10-20 seconds to switch. Etc. I've been a mac guy since before the mac (used the Lisa) and I've never been this unimpressed with an "upgrade."
Is there something I can do to get back to a mac that works when I want it to work?

Sounds like you have some software which hasn't been tested with 10.6. See my upgrade FAQ* for resources to find out if this has happened:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
Downgrading is much harder, though is outlined in this tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=6183892
Note, for a MacBook Pro that shipped with less than 10.5, you must use the original MacBook Pro installer discs, or a clone backup to restore your system to 10.4.11 or earlier.

  • Latest snow leopard update kills my browsers

Snow Leopard was running great until I downloaded the most recent update. Now Safari sometimes won't download pages (I get the ..can't connect.. message) unless I repeatedly reload. Then I may get a page with what looks like CSS code. Firefox does the same. I reinstalled the original OS disk but the problem is still there.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    For Safari...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Since you are running Snow Leopard, *make sure Safari is opening in 32-bit mode, not 64*. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.

Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
    bpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If nothing above has helped, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari.

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard has killed wifi usability

Upgraded to Snow Leopard a couple of days ago and it has significantly impacted my ability to use WiFi, tried on 3 different networks; 2 personal and one carrier and I am either unable to connect or the connection falls out after a few minutes, and when it works the speed is significantly regraded.
Prior to the upgrade I've never had a problem on these or any other wifi networks. Have tried all the proposed solutions I've found on the discussion forum but nothing seems to permanently resolve the issue.
Looking for some new suggestions or a solution from Apple. Being tethered via an ethernet cable seems so old school!

I seem to be having a similar problem but the only option I have is automatic channel selection.
I have a mini with a quickertek nCard in it running at 5 Ghz. Under Leopard I could move it downstairs and everything works great. As soon as I upgraded to Snow Leopard it would no longer work downstairs (signal shows full strength though) but will still work upstairs. Something in Snow Leopard is interfering with performance of the 5Ghz band at a distance. Very frustrating. My only option now is to get the latest Airport Extreme and hope it does better because of its 802.11n at a distance improvements.

  • Snow Leopard has made my computer unusable

    Please advise:
Upgraded to Snow Leopard last week. After the install and software update (10.6.1), my iMac (24-inch : 2.66GHz,2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) totally freaked out: freezes during start up leaving the wallpaper but no menu bar or dock; apps like Safari, Firefox, and even iTunes crash the system and won't force quit; iPhone won't synch. I restarted up in Safe Boot mode and it worked fine, albeit with the limited functionality of Safe Boot.
I thought it was a bad install, so I restored the computer to 10.5.8 using Time Machine. This took hours. I installed Snow Leopard again, the crashing and freezing started immediately. I repaired permissions, verified fonts and all the usual suspects, but no problems were apparent.
Tech support suggested first that I remove all startup items. The computer finally booted up, but then crashed minutes later. I called back and the new guy suggested I erase the hard drive, then reinstall. He suggested I set up the computer first, then migrate all my data from a Time Machine backup as if I had just bought the computer. This took hours. As soon as my documents, settings, and apps came over, the system started crashing again.
Now I have a computer taht only works in Safe Boot mode. I guess I can just restore 10.5.8 using the Time Machine (again). is it possible for year-old Mac is not compatible with Snow Leopard? Is all this crashing soing any harm to my system?
Suggestions? I've never experienced problems of this magnitude with Apple software. I'm a relatively expereinced user, but have never seen anything like this.

Crashing is not great for a machine or system. No, your machine is Sno compatible. I would go back to Leo again--using TM, Then, I would make a bootable clone of this system on an external firewire 800 drive. This installation is your backup and fail safe device. Restoring the clone to your internal will be faster than from TM if you ever want to go back to Leo again.
Then, I would do an erase and install of Sno. In doing an erase and install, I would first repair disk. I would just use the quick erase method. At the end of the installation process, you will have the opportunity to restore your data and other things to your new installation from your clone or your TM. I would restore only my data--and from the clone. After doing so, I would reinstall all apps by hand (not by restoring from the clone). Repair permissions after your install is complete. I would use the same user name and password that you now are using on your Sno install. Be sure and be connected to the internet when installing and that all peripherals are unplugged.
I definitely would not restore your users and settings from your Leo install or your TM. If you do, then you may bring your problems to the new install. Above I said to reinstall your apps by hand. You might choose to take a small risk and to restore them from your clone to keep from having to reinstall all your apps assuming that reinstalling them would be a daunting task. If you are missing items after your install, then they will be in your home folder on the clone.

  • Brand new 27" iMac with Snow Leopard has constant hard disk activity

I just purchased a new 27" iMac which was an upgrade for my 24" with Leopard. I have used my older machine for a good year and not noticed any hard drive activity when idle.
Now on the new machine with Snow Leopard I constantly get hard disk activty every few seconds.
    This will happen from:
    1) Restart
    2) leaving at login screen
    3) loggin in and not running anything.
    4) Computer screen in sleep mode.
    5) well, all the time really.
I have looked at the activity monitor and can see spikes every 5-10 seconds.
I have turned off all processes possible, watched processes for CPU spikes, etc to no avail.
Is anyone else having the same problem and if so can they suggest a fix? I originally thought it may be something writing to a log every so often but I have no idea what and how to find it.
Using iStat just confirms the activity.
Hope you can help as this is driving me mad!

I havent really installed much as well. Here are the list of programs I have installed.
    Adium
    Firefox
    New icons

    skype

    chicken of the VNC
    GoToMeeting
    Cisco VPN Client
    Xmarks for safari and firefox
I would start by checking each of these items, making sure you have the latest versions of each & that they are compatible with Snow Leopard. Do the same for any Firefox extensions or any plugins associated with any of these applications. In particular, chicken of the VNC hasn't been updated since 2006 & what little compatibility info I can find for it suggests it supports only Tiger (10.4) & 10.3.9. The Download Xmarks page indicates that it is beta software.
Also note that some of these items may do more than just run as applications. On first run or install, some might install startup or login items, or preference panels that remain in effect even when the application is not running. Check /Library/StartupItems & /System/Library/StartupItems -- both are empty by default, so anything you find in them is suspect. Likewise, check the System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items tab. Anything you find in them that does not appear to come from Apple (like iTunes helper) is suspect. Also check the "Other" category of System Preferences.

  • Just Upgraded to Snow Leopard and ruined Logic - Help!

I'm running Logic 8, NI Komplete and Reason 4.0.
All was dandy under 10.5.8. Upgraded to snow leopard last night and all apps were fine....except logic.
I opened logic and it went to rescan all the AU. Fine, let it go a few mins but seemed to be hanging, so force quit. It gave me an error that logic encountered an issue with the Rewire plug in. That may be what caused the hanging.
This happened a few times, so I googled for answers and did the following.
    - Deleted Logic Preferences
    - Tried to start holding control to bypass AU (didn't start)
    - Reinstalled logic (twice, once plain and the second time after trashing receipts)
Now, logic just bounces in the dock many times, no splash screen and then just stops bouncing and no launch. Have to force quit.
My instruments, loops etc are on another drive so when i reinstall it's just logic. Also my disks are for a L7-L8 upgrade version.
I saw another closed thread where beejay had helped someone resolve this, but no real answers there.
Can anyone think of something I haven't tried (other than full clean install of Snow Leopard) that might work?

Hey Eriksimon or Bee Jay, need your help! Almost the same problem but worse... I don't have a timed backup
I'm running Reason 3 through Logic 9, didn't even realize I had melodyne until I searched my hard drive after I installed SL and Logic stopped working... (Logic just bounces in the dock or else crashes on the splash screen)
I deleted Logic Preferences and most of my AU plugins preferences, and Melodyne completely

Why does Snow Leopard have no brightness control on the keyboard ? Also why will the magic mouse not wake the screen from sleep ?

  • Safari (in Snow Leopard) has stopped displaying pdf's

I don't know whether the timing is a coincidence, but ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, when I click on a browser page link that is a PDF, the browser does open a new tab (my setting), but the image in the window is just a solid black or very dark gray. It used to be that Safari opened pdf's in Preview. I've all periodically, in the past, accepted suggestions to install upgraded Flash Player versions and other accessories. Does anyone have a diagnosis of where I went wrong along the way, of if it's SL, and how to fix it?

I had the same problem and found that it was a conflict with the PDF Browser Plugin. If you're running Safari in the default 64-bit mode in SL the PDF Browser Plugin will block the display of all PDF's. There are 2 ways to solve this:
    1. Launch in 32-bit mode by quitting, selecting the Safari application and doing a "Get Info" and check to use in 32-bit mode
    2. Disable the PDF Browser Plugin plugin by navigation to "Library > Internet Plug-ins" and trashing the plug-in.

  • No internet since Snow leopard has been installed

I installed Snow Leopard and now safari will not work. The Airport connects to my home network but will not load any pages. Is this a common issue that can be fixed?
Advice to resolve this issue would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks

I tried everything you suggested, but I still can't go on the web. Safari keeps saying that it can't stabilize a connection with the server.
I have no idea on this.
However, the iMac is well connected to the internet, because on my MacBook, I can see it under 'Shared'. Do you have any other options?
I don't currently have more options. I don't think that what you said implies anything about connecting to the internet. Well, OK, I do have two more solutions that doesn't seem to make much sense. Still, they have been reported to work.
    First:
If your network is configured to use DHCP, try removing the DNS settings in Network > Advanced > DNS. Then click OK, Apply. Doing so should reset the DNS. Try your browser. Write down the old DNS before resetting so you'll have them if you need them.
    Second:
Change from WEP to WPA or WPA2 (try both)

  • Is it me? Snow Leopard is ruining my Mac experience.

I am using a Blackbook 2.16 Ghz 2 duo with 2Gb ram, and since my upgrade a couple of weeks ago everything just seems wrong.
When i first installed i lost my iphoto application and had to have a service provider reinstall it. OK not a big problem. But everything is just running slower. I have never seen the rotating kaleidoscope as much as i have been seeing it now. I have not installed or changed anything since i upgraded from Leopard and the performance was so much better before.
Safari seems a lot more glitchy and the hang time i get now is really frustrating. Also maybe the biggest annoyance is when i watch movies they jump and freeze regularly which never happened before. The most problems come watching them with VLC and the new Quicktime Player. It happens less if I use Quicktime 7.
What should I do? Any ideas, or anyone else having a similar experience? I have checked my disk and no problems, nothing has changed except my upgrade to SL. I just feel wrong even complaining about my Mac, in all the years and various machines i have never had such a poor experience with a Mac. I almost feel like a PC user. I know many people have had no problems, so why me?
Sorry about the rant but I am just lost and don't know what to do, I want the good times back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A painfully slow and glitchy mac user.

Your experience is not uncommon. As of yet I have not found a reliable solution to the slowness some experience. I have a possible work around for you. Bootably clone your Sno install to an external drive. Keep it and try to repair it--making yourself aware of possible solutions as they become available. Then, using your Leo install DVD, erase and install Leo over Sno on your internal. You will be able to restore your apps, data, settings, and users from the clone. However, I would not restore everything since you might pass Sno problems back to Leo. I would restore my data and might take a chance on my apps if I had too many to reinstall by hand. But, really, if you want to be sure that you end up participating in the good life again, I'd install my apps by hand. And, you don't have to be in a hurry. You still would have the Sno installation to use in a pinch.
