Snow Leopard Installation Disk Ejects - won't install

A brand new Snow Leopard Installation disk would not be read in a MacBook Pro 15" so I just thought I'd share my solution.
This installation disk was readable on every Mac that I tried except the one that I wanted to install Snow Leopard onto, which, by the way, could read other CDs and DVDs.
I ran TechTool just to eliminate any problem it may be able to handle.
The solution was to clean the DVD with a little dish soap and water and to blot it dry with a lint-free cloth. Once I was sure that the disk was totally dry I attempted the installation again and it worked.

Hans, will that Pioneer cause problems with this Tiger app? One comment I read on one forum said that non-Apple disk drives have to be disabled to run Tiger, so I wonder if that would solve this problem. I appreciate all the time you've given me to help solve this problem. Like most projects, a lot more is involved that appears at first.

  • How can I create a disk image of snow leopard installer disk from my Imac which runs it?

how can I create a disk image of snow leopard installer disk from my Imac which runs it? It came without DVD installer, and I want to make a copy of it's OS installer but can't find out how.

You need to have the disc in order to create disk image of snow leopard installer disc. What did your machine ship with? If something later than SL, then why? If earlier, then you can buy the SL installer disc and make the disk image.

  • Leopard installation disk ejects before installation begins

When I attempted to install Leopard after the initial screen and the reboot, my iMac chugged a bit then ejected the install disk. After several attempts which resulted in the same thing, I called Apple and, during the hour I was on hold, kept trying. At the end the install started and so I hung up. However, I am not sure the installation was quite Ok since there appear to be some anomalies. For instance, the little close, minimize and expand "LEDs" at the top left are all grey, no color although, on my PowerBook, where the installation went fine, they are the usual red yellow and green. ALso, when I rebooted the iMac after the install, my wall paper was gone although, again, when I did the same on the PowerBook, it was back again. I decided to try to reinstall on the iMac but again encountered the same problem, the disk ejected before the install started. Any ideas?

Premature disk ejection can be caused by bad RAM or a "greasy" disk.
Take a careful look at the disk for a shiny film. If it's there, use a damp soft cloth and wipe from the center to the outside, radially. DO NOT ever wipe a DVD in a circular manner.
If the DVD is OK, then it might be your RAM or some other hardware problem.
Many have had marginal DVD readers and had success using an external DVD drive.
If you have another Mac, see how the disk behaves in it.

  • Snow Leopard and aftermarket HDD (won't install on WD3200)

I figured this out last night and thought I would post a word of caution. I have a Macbook with a WDC WD3200BEVT HDD. I had originally cloned my stock HDD to it and therefore never needed to go through a real install routine. When I tried installing SL last night, I got the restart and, when it asked me where to install SL, the option screen was blank! I checked disk utilities and only saw the DVD drive; the HD wasn't showing up at all. Called Apple support who tried a number of different things (check SMART status; GUID formatted; etc) to no avail until I remembered that this was not the 'stock' HDD. I then put it into a firewire enclosure and ran the install which was successful. The HDD is back in place and all is working well.
A word of caution, the install took one hour (over FW400) and the computer was unresponsive for at least 20 minutes of that (blank screen, no light on front, little to no HDD activity). I almost turned it off 2-3 times but gave it time in the end which was the right thing to do. Just wanted this info out there for anyone else with an upgraded HDD. I can confirm others with this same drive are having the same issues (via macrumors).

Again, you need to install the Lion Server Admin tools when you are using Lion or Lion Server as your platform, and these tools can administer Lion Server as well as recent Snow Leopard Server configurations.
If you want to use Screen Sharing (or if you're using older SL or Leopard or earlier), then that too is an option.
Or run a VM and guests with the tool version(s) required.
Mac OS X Server Admin Tools 10.7.3 (DL1488)
This cross-version compatibility is (was?) documented by Apple, but I don't immediately see that detail in the current release notes.  I am using these tools to manage a mix of 10.7.2, 10.7.3 and 10.6.8 servers from Lion client boxes.

  • HT3910 I never had /received the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard installation disk: how can I recover my OS X? Thanks from Italy

How can I recover my OS X?

Ring the online Store at the number given at bottom left of this page: it may still be possible to get the install disks for your Mac at a nominal cost. You will need to give them the serial number of your Mac.
If you can't get it that way, you can still purchase the retail version in the online Store - go to its webpage for your country and enter 'Snow Leopard' in the search box at top right.

  • Erased and copied Snow Leopard OS disk to Disk Utility partition

    Hi,
I am no way a technical person and think i have ruined my ok working MBP. After alot of research, to save money I decided to do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard (previously running Mavericks OS) and erase my old data and settings on the MBP, as it was running super slow and I wanted to go back to the old OSX. I have a 2009 MBP previously running Mavericks installed from Dec 2013. When I went into the disk utility screen after deleting everything and resetting information, I couldn't restore the Mavericks OS as I downloaded it from iTunes for free - said to get from a saved folder or something. So I clicked around and accidently copied/duplicated the old Snow Leopard installation disk that was inserted and restored it as the Hard Drive/Disk utility (see pic attached).
Not sure how to save this computer? Is there a way to reset it back to factory settings before I incorrectly clicked the wrong button and ruined it?
    Any info would be helpful.
    Cheers

    Hi AndyBall_uk,
Here are photos of all the images that I think will help. The DVD copy is the one that I pop in computer. I haven't tried the other disk which was also a DVD, this one is called the applications disk.
With the restore screen on the HardDrive image, this is where I accidentally clicked a few buttons and copied the OSX install disk over the previous Mac hard drive.
Thank you for your assistance, it is much appreciated.

  • OS 10.6 Snow Leopard and iLife '09 installations disks ejected and not read

I bought the Mac Box Set intending to upgrade from Tiger 10.4.9 to Snow Leopard 10.6 and iLife '09 and iWork '09. I was able only to install the iWork disc. The other two are ejected without any error message or notice of any sort. The Genius desk was unable to solve the problem. Please help.

Is it possible that there are certain firmware or OS patches that conflict with SL? How about any third-party apps?
Any third party OS patch could conflict with running Snow Leopard, & a few could conflict with installing that OS when you start out the installation process by clicking on the "Install Mac OS X" icon while running your Mac normally (IOW, when it has started up from the internal HD), but none should cause the installer disc to be ejected when the Mac is starting up, including when the "Install Mac OS X" application does a restart, which it should do at about 10 to 15 minutes into the normal install process.
This is because at startup time, no OS has loaded yet -- in fact, part of the startup process involves looking for disks that might contain an OS to start up from, including on DVD's in the optical drive.
IOW, if you can start up from the installer DVD, it doesn't matter what is on some other disk. If you can't, then either the drive or disc is defective or your firmware (including what is stored in "PRAM") is messed up. You can reset PRAM using the method discussed elsewhere in this thread. As long as any firmware patch came from Apple & was successfully installed, there is very little chance that it is the problem. If it is the problem, there is not much you can do about it besides taking the Mac in for service.

  • How many Installs Can I do from a Snow Leopard Retail Disk?

I have an old Snow Leopard Retail Disk (10.6.3) that I used a few years ago. Our Macs have mostly been upgraded to Lion since then, but we still have a 2007 iMac running Leopard and want to run some legacy third-party software. We need to upgrade that iMac from Leopard to Snow Leopard, then upgrade via system update to 10.6.8 in order to run the legacy software.
I know we used this Snow Leopard retail disk to upgrade one computer to Snow Leopard already, and we might have used the disk to install Snow Leopard on an external hard drive as well but I'm not sure as it was a few years ago and that hard drive may have been archived and placed in storage.
My question is, is there a limited number of installs that we can do with this disk? Do we need to first uninstall Snow Leopard from one computer before we can install it on another?

Unlike Windows, the DVD or CD versions of the Mac OS (Snow Leopard or earlier) have no serial number, or even keep track of how many times you've installed it. It's all on the honor system of following the license you have, which as mende1 noted, is either a single computer license, or five in one household (not shared with friends or relatives).
Lion and Mountain Lion are a bit different. Macs that came with either OS have a machine specific version (for the necessary hardware drivers) and cannot be shared, other than with a 100% identical Mac. The App Store versions are intended for Macs that were released before the respective OS's, and contain only the hardware drivers for the Mac models they are listed to support.

  • I have tried to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard using disk. New OS wouldn't load and now laptop won't start at all

I have tried to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard using disk. New OS wouldn't load and now laptop won't start at all. Simply get the Apple logo and the clock below and then after about 10 mins the laptop switched itself off. The Snow Leopard  disk is a brand new family edition. Error message when attempting to install was that "this software cannot be installed on this disk".

Thanks Fred, but I've tried '''ALL''' that already.
I '''THINK''' I might have found the problem - the Profiles folder has been locked by inherited properties from the levels above. I have had to go all the way up to my User folder and reset ALL the properties from there down to be unlocked so that I could remove the prefs.js file so that it could be recreated on the next launch of FF. Exactly why my User folder is locked in such a way as to stop me/FF making changes when I have been able to alter preferences at will in the past, I don't know ...
So far, so good. I have since done a complete shutdown and when I restarted this morning, FF seems to be behaving itself ...

  • I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro (2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need to purchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro(2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need topurchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

The OS disks that are shipped with a particular product
are set up so that tey will only install on that product.
It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
    is all.
This is to prevent people from doing exactly what you
are trying to do.  The license for OSX shipped with any
is only valid for that product.  Also, Snow Leopard,
including Server, is only permitted to be run on one
computer at a time.  Bottom line, unlike Lion, legally
you cannot install the same copy on multiple
computers unless some "family pack" or site license
    is purchased.
Yes, you need to purchase another copy.
The copy of Snow Leopard license is here:

  • Mac OX Snow Leopard installation from DVD failed

I tried to install the new OS Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 (bought today) on my iMac. But is constantly failed (message: installation failed) and now it's in a loop where I can't get out. Because the only action there is is to try it again. What should I do?

What specific iMac model do you have? Does it meet these requirements?
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
To shut down the computer press and hold in the Power button until the computer shuts off. When you restart the computer you can eject the DVD as follows:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
         /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
If you are currently running Leopard and it's still working then do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If all is OK then reboot from your Snow Leopard DVD and try the installation again.
BTW, I encourage you to make a cloned backup of your current working system before trying to upgrade.

  • Just purchased a ipad2, could not us it on my MacBook 10.4.1 - Purchased and installed OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.3 - downloaded and installed latest itunes, set up a itunes accounts and tested by purchasing an album and app, ipad does not show in devises?

I just purchased a ipad2, it would not work on my MacBook 10.4.1 I purchased and installed OSX snow leopard 10.6.3 downloaded and installed the latest itunes, set up an itunes account, purchased some music and apps.  When i plug in my ipod it shows up and works, but when i plug in my new ipad the ipad screen comes up with a display of a cable and itunes but does not show in devises, i have tried all the resets and different USB ports with no success.  Any ideas short of selling it on ebay or buying a new computer?

If you've already tried the usual rebooting of the computer and ports and stuff, there is only a few things left I can think of. It's possible that when you updated iTunes it didn't fully replace all the files, so I suggest just manually removing iTunes and then reinstalling it.
Try removing iTunes manually first http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224 then download a fresh copy, make sure it is 10.3.1
It is essential that you go through Finder to remove those files it mentions. Otherwise they won't be reinstalled when you run the installer again.

  • Snow Leopard installation on Mac Mini has failed

    Hi,
Does anyone know whether Snow Leopard checks what hard disk is installed in order to satisfy installation requirements as I've fitted an SSD Hard Disk Drive in my Macintel Mac Mini and installing Snow Leopard has failed (no longer boots into any Operating System previous nor upgraded. (Mac OS X 10.5.8 previously installed)).
    Thank you for any advice.
    Best Regards.

It may not have anything to do with a new drive installation. Snow Leopard has just "bricked" my Intel Mac Mini hard drive - the original one. The first attempt at installation failed, so I tried an erase and instal. It seemed to work - briefly but when I tried to restore apps and settings from a Time Machine back-up it "hung" with only one minute of restoration to go. Now the HD appears to have failed, since it is unable to find any system folder and booting up via the Snow Leopard disc and bringing up the disc utility shows a greyed-out HD drive.
Some people on the MacBook Pro forum report a similar problem with the hard drive after Snow Leopard installation.
