Snow Leopard is changing filenames to ALL CAPS!!

Hi All,
This is getting pretty frustrating. For absolutely no apparent reason files names and extensions are getting changed to all caps. This happens in programs ranging from CS3 to Coda. Has anyone come across this is or know of a fix or cause?
Thanks much

In addition to Kappy's advice, if the issue is specific to your original user account and not the newly created user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your new account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything on that other account's list from the original account's Preferences folder into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (one at time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

Ever since snow leopard and now Lion some filenames have been changing to ALL CAPS for no reason whatsoever. Has anyone else had this issue? It happens mainly in Adobe Creative Sweet and Panic's Coda.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

One can't guarantee no data loss.  See my backup FAQ*:

Could you take a screen show showing the files on your thumb drive? This will allow us to better see what you have on the drive.
    Command-Shift-3 takes the entire screen
Command-Shift-4 takes a portion of the screen. <--use this one

  • Snow Leopard Server running extremely slow all of a sudden!!

Hi, I'm not a qualified server technician but am currently trying my best to run a server in a Secondary School! Please help, need to fix ASAP.
So basically we've got a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard server which has become incredibly slow in the past week. Nothing has changed in our department to trigger this. Here's everything I know so far...
    - If I try to log on to the admin account when "Some Network Accounts Are Available", log on will take under a minute. If I try to log on to the admin account when the light goes green and "Network Accounts Are Available" log on will take forever and eventually just crash and which point I have to just force a shutdown and try again.
    - When I can log on, some aspects of the computing seems fast and other aspects are really slow. For example, a few programs open as soon as I log on no problem, however a simple spotlight search or trying to open Sytem Preferences will crash the computer completely.
    - Have tried booting in Safe Mode, and everything ran fast and how it's mean to but once restarting and booting normally the problems remained.
Sorry for the lack of knowledge!!
    Thanks in advance.

Your comment indicates "crash the computer"?  Do you mean that OS X Server itself fails, and you have to reboot?  Or that the application crashes, and you have to restart it?
The following are some general approaches toward gathering some data:
Launch Console.app from Applications > Utilities and see if there are blocks of repeating errors.
Launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and issue the following harmess, diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
After entering an administrative password and possibly seeing a one-time informational message about sudo, you should see some network configuration information and then an indication that no changes are required, or that there are DNS or network errors.
Boot from the Snow Leopard installation DVD and run a volume verification pass using Disk Utility, this from the Utilities menu of the installation disl.
    FWIW...
If the applications or OS X Server are crashing, then you're generally heard toward either a reinstallation of the software, or a hardware repair, or quite possibly a combination of the two.
Forcing a hard shutdown can lead to corruptions, depending on exactly what's going on when the power drops out; that's probably best left as a last-resort approach and one best avoided.

  • Snow Leopard finder doesn't list all files on Windows 7 volumes

From my Macbook Pro (10.6.8), I can connect to my Mac Pro, while it is running Windows 7 in Boot Camp, in order to access the Mac Pro's 6 volumes (1 Boot Camp, 5 Mac volumes). This is using SMB via Finder's 'Connect to server…' on an Airport network.
However, Finder never displays all the files and folders on any of the Mac volumes it connects to through Windows 7. It seems to show approximately the first 18-9 files and folders, and then nothing. The same applies when I open a nested folder — it doesn't list all of its contents.
Any ideas as to what's causing this and how I can fix it? I have searched all over but can't find any answers yet, so I'm hoping someone here has seen this before.

Thanks for the reply, but I do have the Restore Windows box checked (see below). And the Resume features info (cnet link) only addresses how to turn the feature off, either selectively or globally. I'm simply looking for the functionality that I had with Snow Leopard and now seems to be absent. Maybe it's a bug in my Finder.

  • I installed 10.6.8 through Live Update, now Snow Leopard doesn't start at all! And I don't even have my Leopard DVD here! What should I do?

Two days I ago I installed 10.6.8 through Live Update. But, since then, I can't open Snow Leopard! Everytime I got the grey page and the request to reboot turning the Macbook off and then on. I could use Safe Mode, used Utility to repair all the processes and deleted any cache but nothing, tried a procedure of renaming the kernel found on the net and now I can't even open the Safe Mode. I don't even have here my Snow Leopard dvd! What should I do? Called the customer service twice but not that great help. Can I try to use another Snow Leopard dvd (i.e. from a friend of mine)? Should I format the partition and reinstall it? I'm really angry about this, got this Macbook since less than one year and it crashes after an autoupdate, probably forcing me to 700 km x 2 trip to get that dvd (and of course those of any other app I got?!)? Grrr.

... tried a procedure of renaming the kernel found on the net ...
If you've been doing things like that, you probably destroyed your system. You need the installation disc that came with the machine. Another one won't work, unless it's for the same model.
I'm really angry about this, got this Macbook since less than one year and it crashes after an autoupdate ...
It failed to boot because of incompatible third-party system modifications that you installed. We know that, because it started in safe mode. Then, instead of removing the modifications, which would have solved your problem, you did something that immobilized the machine completely. You should not have updated the OS without having an installation disc available, and you shouldn't be using a computer at all without backups. Apple can't protect you from the consequences of making bad choices.

  • I want to upgrade to snow leopard, how do i save all my data?

What do i have to do before i set back to default status to save all my data?

Whilst it's essential to maintain an up-to-date backup of all your important files, especially if you're updating your OS, the update process itself will not overwrite your files.
If you don't currently have any backup I'd recommend getting that organised first before upgrading. SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner are regularly recommended as excellent backup programs. Once you're on Snow Leopard you can automatically backup to an external drive using Time Machine.
Worth checking that your computer meets the technical requirements for the upgrade:

  • Could Snow Leopard upgrade changed Time Machine operation

I bought a new 24" 2,93 mhz Imac which came with leopard installed. I have 3 external hard drives daisy chained with my scanner. I only turn on the two smaller hard drives to enable operation of the scanner. Most of the time I only have my 750 gig My Book drive which I set up for Time Machine to back up my computers HD. Under leopard all worked fine but having only recently upgraded to snow leopard I had an occasion to use the scanner and turned on all hard drives. Time Machine began to work so hard I could not scan and could not shut down so I had to push the off button. I now cannot get the Imac to boot now unless I turn on the other two hard drives also. Not sure how to proceed?.
Maybe as the other hard drive appeared on my desktop time machine was backing them up. I had excluded the desktop when I initially set it up.

You need to run a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions), via Disk Utility, in your Applications/Utilities folder, on any disk that was attached when you did the force power off.

Excluding the desktop doesn't do it. You have to exclude the drives via TM Preferences > Options. Note that you can only do that while they're attached, and when you eject them, their names will disappear from the exclusion list (but should come back automatically when they're re-connected).
That said, there are a number of posts here and in the Leopard TM forum, where various WD drives, including the MyBook, don't work well with TM. Check with WD for firmware or driver updates.
Exclude as many of those drives from any anti-virus scanning as you can.
Also exclude them, at least temporarily, from Spotlight Indexing, via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
If none of that helps, post back and we'll explore deeper.
(p.s., I'll ask a Host to move this from the +Leopard Time Machine forum+ to the +Snow Leopard Time Machine forum.)+

I have an Imac 2006/7 I upgraded to snow leopard and it has been froze up ever since.  Called Apple, they said buy RAM I did, installed it.  Still freezes.  After trying to click around I eventually get a message  "Your Mac OS x disk has no more space available for application memory" To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using.  Closing windows and removing files from your start up disk, will also help"  Any thoughts?

  • Snow Leopard language change

I'm in France at the moment and iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie only operate in French, everything else is in English.  Any idea how I can change it?  I've tried system prefs and the language and text option, but it doesn't change anything.

Go to system preferences/language & text/language and move Nederlands to the top of the list and then logout/login.
OS X is always multilingual no matter where you buy it.
