Snow Leopard machine will not allow anyone log in until reboot

Hi,
I am having trouble with my Snow Leopard machines (Mac Pro with 10.6.8). Most of time Macs will work fine but then all of sudden they will not allow any users to login (Not even local users). I have tried 3 locals accounts and root account as well but none of them will work. I have tried ARD to remote in but it will not work. Also tried to use SSH but it won't let me connect.
The only work around this issue which I have just to reboot that machine then all users can login.
Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
Thanks,

Hi,
When I see the machine sitting at login screen and I try to login using few different accounts (Local, AD, even root), it would shake and not go anywhere.
It will be really hard tell that something is goin on with that machine because there is no visible signs of any trouble until you try to login.
I am assuming that it should let login using local accounts even though there might be an issue with network which would cause a problem if AD accounts are used but nothing works at that login prompt, until I restart that machine.
Once the machine is re-booted then I can login with all the local accounts and re-check the active diretory settings to make sure that AD accounts can login. At this point problem will disappear for a while then few days later it will show up again randomly on different machines.
I have done all the OS X updates on all the machines using ARD but nothing seems to be working yet.
At this stage, couple of things come to mind:
Something went wrong with that lab image and I need to rebuild it which I will do it at later time. For right now I am only looking for temporary fix.
Using ARD, I have only done OS X updates but not the firmware update which might be causing this issue.
@Sanjampet: - I don't think that there is an issue with my password becasue it seems to be working after I have restarted that machine.
Thanks,

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, Mail will not let me archive any mail. All archived messages re-appear in my inbox (I have tried archiving and placing in the trash bin). How do i regain control of my inbox?

The main differences that can cause a problem are scripting additions (64-bit vs 32-bit and security reasons) and the usage of dates (it is not as forgiving). AppleScript itself is basically the same, so if empty paragraphs are what caused your problems the update would have just been a coincidence.

  • Snow Leopard OS will not "see" older Leopard Time Machine back-ups

I upgraded to OSX Snow Leopard from Leopard using a new hard drive (I wanted a bigger drive so it was actually a fresh install rather than an upgrade). OSX SL could see Time Machine back-ups from the Leopard system initially (before performing an OSX SL back-up). Now that the OSX TL back-up is completed, the previous Leopard back-ups cannot be seen by Time Machine. Any ideas on how/if I can get it to see them (as I could before I did a full back-up)?
I can see them on the drive, but just can't get to them via Time Machine.
    Thanks!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Yes, Time Machine normally only shows you the backups for the Mac you're on.
You need the +*Browse . . .+* option. See #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • MacBook Pro (snow leopard) 2006 will not restart. Getting blank screen with folder (?)

MacBook Pro (snow leopard) 2006 has begun to turn off attached Cinema Display over the last two days. Comes back on on restart. This morning, the MacBook screen also went blank white on restart. Tried to use Snow Leopard CD to restart but it was ejected and folder with ? is only thing that displays. Will not restart. Have replaced hard drive 6 months ago. Help! What's wrong? I need this computer for work.

    1. replace my current internal HD and convert it to external HD for use as secondary boot drive,
No.  That has no advantage for you.
leave the internal HD alone and purchase an external HD that I can clone and use as boot drive in case of emergency?
Yes.  I use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a boot drive and as a backup (in addition to Time Machine).  CCC allows one to make incremental changes as well as creating a copy of the recovery partition.  This means that if run on a proper schedule, you data will; be well protected and the MBP can be in operation very quickly if the internal HDD should fail.
A clone should be a 2.5", 9 mm thick SATA HDD so that it will fit inside the MBP.  It can be powered from the USB port thus not requiring an AC outlet.  In my collection of HDDs, I favor HGST and Seagate products.  I principally use OWC enclosures that allow for USB, Firewire and eSATA connections.  These are expensive but one can use a more modest one as well of one can tolerate longer data transfer times.
Here is a link showing some available SATA HDDs that will complement your MBP:

You can look for enclosures on the same web site.
    Ciao.

My computer just boots normally as it did. It is in version 10.5.8. The build is 9L31a. It says that I have an invalid volume directory count and filesystem verify or repair failed when I attempt to verify my hard drive. My mac is probably around three years old. It does meet the requirements for 10.6. I would not be a problem to start with a fresh system as I do not have much on the computer.
The invalid directory count and file system errors need to be fixed before the operating system installation can proceed. The new operating system install copies in more than 200,000 new files and with the invalid directory errors, this will get worse.
When looking at "About This Mac," what is the Processor identified as? It should say "Intel something ..."
Click on your Macintosh HD and under the File Menu, select Get Info. How much disk space have you used and how much is available?
Anyway, assuming you have an Intel processor and plenty of disk space, the next step would be to boot from the 10.5 Install DVD OR from the 10.6 install DVD, and run Disk Utility from that DVD. Select Repair Disk (not Verify Disk) from the options shown on the buttons in Disk Utility. By the way, I suggest that you copy important files off this disk to a backup before doing this repair, just in case something is really wrong with the hard drive and it actually fails, or in case a reformat is needed.
If the Disk Utility indicates that it fixed something, run it again until it reports back that the disk is ok. If it reports back that it is unable to repair the problem that it found, that's another issue that can be dealt with with other tools.
If this were my computer, I would also test the memory, as a bad memory chip can cause such file system errors. The Apple Hardware Test (that came originally with your computer on the accompanying DVDs) will check memory, but it isn't as good a test as MemTest
    http://download.cnet.com/Memtest/3000-2094_4-32926.html
Has your computer been freezing much lately, or having other problems?
In any case, you should not proceed with the 10.6 upgrade until the file system errors are fixed.

  • Snow Leopard VPN will not let users connect consistently

I did a clean install to Snow Leopard, and now my VPN is completely odd. It randomly does or doesn't let users connect.
    Setup:
    - Snow Leopard 10.6
    - OpenDirectory has been added to (vpnaddkeyagentuser /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1)
    - Firewall is off for these tests to rule it out as being the problem
    - IP address and FQDN are the same as they were when server was 10.5
    - DNS, DHCP, and all other services are working fine
    - To rule out password problems, all of the passwords in the test are the same
    - All tested accounts have the same password
I attempted 3 connections with each account in each scenario
Round 1 - Access set to all users and all groups, and admins have access to all services.
Test1 - local admin: worked, failed, failed
Test2 - od normal : worked, worked, worked
Test3 - od admin : worked, failed, worked
Test4 - local admin: worked, worked, worked
Round 2 - Access set to only those in the group "Test Group", and admins have access to all services. "Test Group" only includes the users: Test2 and Test3

Is anyone else having these odd VPN problems?

I figured out the problem with the VPN, but is stretched well beyond VPN.
I'm not sure exactly how everything melted down, but somehow the installer messed up massive amounts of things. I won't even go in to it other than to say...
    - Certain programs wouldn't install to the primary drive (they'd show the drive, but with a "!" on it)
    - Mean while when booted normally, Disk Utility would not see and drives except the CD rom
    - No two programs saws the same set of hard drives or cds
    - If you booted from CD, Disk Utility saw all drives, but Start Disk only saw the CD
    - Software Update (even from the command line) would fine no new updates, even though none had been applied
    - If you blessed the primary hd, it would boot, but if you tried to boot normally you'd get a flicker "?" folder and Apple symbol
    - etc...
The weird thing is, all of the other services were working fine (Web hosting, VPN, AFP, SMB, firewall, ical, ichat). But obviously something dreadful had happened during the install, which is odd because it was a clean install.
I reformatted the drive, reinstalled, and all is fine now.
Weirdest installation problem I've ever encountered.

Respecting to virus protection, OS X has got its own security systems, so you don't need any additional application. If you want more information > http://www.reedcorner.net/mmg
Finally, you are running OS X Mountain Lion, the most recent OS X update, and as you don't have any problem with it, leave this version and you will save headaches

  • Snow Leopard Macs will not wake our Brother or HP network printers

It seems that none of our Snow Leopard upgraded Macs will wake our Brother printers. One of which is a 8065DN, but the HP 2840 is also problematic. Are any others experiencing the same issue? If we turn them off then back on they work again-even queued jobs resume immediately. I have tried both static and dhcp network setting and get the identical behavior.

    HI Michael,
Try reinstalling the drivers that came with the printers. If that doesn't help, check the vendor sites for SL compatible driver updates.
    And try repairing disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • My Time Machine will not allow restore

I can not restore anything with my Time machine software.  I have a Western Digital external hard drive, and the software is installing the backups as it's supposed to, but if I click on a restore point, the restore button remains gray and unusable.  What do I need to do?

You have to navigate, using Finder to the file you wish to restore (or to where it previously was) and then enter Time Machine. You can navigate around to any of the backups - select a file and then click on the Restore button - which should now be white. If you have no file selected when you enter Time Machine then you can not navigate around the back-ups and choose a file to restore, hence the Restore button will be grayed out.

  • IChat will not allow me log-in after OSX upgrade?

I recently updated my software to OSX 10.4.11 to 'fix security issues'
When I try to log in to iChat it says my password is wrong. I am able to log in on the same network using my lap top using my password i know to be correct.
Resetting the password on the Apple site does not fix the issue.
I have tried quitting iChat and going in to: User>Library> Preferences and deleting the files with .ichat in the name. I then emptied trash and restarted iChat but had the same problem.
    What am I doing wrong?
Please offer any advice in full. Thanks

  • Time Machine will not allow me to wipe it clean because of "Bands" warning.

I have my G4 running OSX 10.5.8 backing up to 1TB Time Capsule. I has worked perfectly since day one, but then I noticed that the Time Capsule was almost completely full - irregardless of the fact that the back up files are about 190GB.
So, I tried to delete the "Bundle" file on the Time Capsule. It deleted a large portion of it, but then I started to get warnings stating the "Cannot be deleted because Bands are in use."
Disk Utility doesn't see the Time Capsule. How do I delete this Bundle so that I can start fresh? It is the ONLY thing on my Time Capsule and is preventing from mounting or doing anything.

Is this the only sparsebundle file on the Time Capsule?

  • Yahoo recommends firefox upgrade to enjoy new features but will not upgrade and will not let me log in until i do so.

Asus laptop running windows 7. Has recently come up with message "yahoo recommends you upgrade your browser to enjoy all the features in the new yahoo mail" Clicking on the upgrade box does nothing. Clicking on the "continue without upgrading" box does nothing so i am now unable to access emails on my laptop.

I wonder what version of Firefox Yahoo thinks you have?? There are some add-ons which can modify or block browser information. To see whether that might be relevant, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
    Any difference?
Also, Yahoo's changes have obsoleted many old bookmarks. If you are accessing Yahoo! mail using a bookmark, try letting Yahoo redirect you to its currently preferred server from a generic address like this one
    https://mail.yahoo.com/
or from the Yahoo home page.
