Snow Leopard Memory Usage

I have recently downgraded my iMac 8,1 back to Snow Leopard due to an unsupported video card in Lion. Not soon after I downgraded, I started experiencing high cpu usage when the machine would run for long periods of time without being rebooted (6-7 hours).
Currently, the machine has 8GB of RAM (which is all recognized in spite of the documentation stating the max ram on this machine is 6GB). I run, on average 8-10 applications at the same time throughout the day. It appears that the offending application that takes up cpu usage varies throughout the day. This morning, it is iTunes using 85%. Other times, it's Apple Mail. Even others, it's MDWorker (which I'm not confident I know what that is).
What doesn't make sense is that the offending application changes throughout the day. As time passes, sometimes when I attempt to launch a video on a website, it gets real choppy and will not run normally until I reboot. The audio cuts in and out and the frame rate is horrible.
My initial thought was that one of the memory sticks is bad, but these issues don't indicate a memory problem from what I understand. Yesterday, I removed one of the two sticks of RAM and booted to see what performance was like with just 4GB in. It did the same thing even after only 5 minutes running. I have also considered a memory leak, but that in itself shouldn't cause abnormal CPU usage.
Currently, My CPU usage is at about 50% on both cores with iTunes taking up 82% (I am streaming audio) and the Activity Monitor itself using 8%. All other processes are under 2%.
Does anyone have any advice? What should be normal CPU usage on Snow Leopard? Of course, that's a subjective question that depends on what applicatios you are running. I do not do any heavy graphics processing. My main applications are Safari, Word, Excel, Outlook, iChat, and iTunes. I am thinking of, once again, nuking this machine and rebuilding from scratch.
Any advice would be helpful. I'm pulling my hair out.

On a hunch, I ran ClamXAV from Safe Mode and found 8 emails with Trojans. While not critical, I moved them to the trash and emptied it. One of the 8 was in my Mail folder. The rest were in SPAM. I rebooted after that was complete and have been running better since the above screenshot was taken. I cannot imagine that a trojan was clicked on as it was probably an attachment unless someone I regularly email with accidentally sent me one since that's how they work.
There are no known Trojans spread through e-mail that affect the Mac and without knowing the infection name I can't really say, but suspect they were all Windows. Most Mac malware detected by ClamXav have "OSX" as part of the infection name.
It's never a good idea to move e-mail files around using the finder or any AV software. This will most certainly corrupt the mailbox index file which could result in the loss of additional e-mail. You should repair the damage by running "Rebuild" from the Mailbox menu of Mail on both your Inbox and Junk folders. It's also possible that you didn't delete the oriinal mail from your e-mail ISP's server and it will just be downloaded to your computer again the next time you check for mail. Depends several settins in Mail and on your ISP's server.
You should always use the "Reveal in Finder" option to locate the e-mail in the finder, then double-click it to open it in Mail, then use Mail's delete key (and empty the trash folder if you use it). There may be  one more step to permanently delete it if the e-mail is from a gmail account.

  • Snow Leopard Memory Use

    Hey Guys,
I Just upgraded my Macbook's OS from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1 and among some of the new features i noticed was the amount of memory free in Activity Monitor.
On bootup with nothing running except finder i noticed that while using Leopard i had almost 1.1gigs of free ram and now with snow leopard i only have half a gig or less of of free ram.
And most of my apps seem to run under Intel 64-bit so im wondering whats going on here.
Im a student going for web design so i need as much free ram as i can get to run
Adobe Web Premium apps like Illustrator or Photoshop CS4.

I used Illustrator and Photopshop since i got my MBP in August 09 and it ran fine
That wasn't with SL & 64-bit environment, tho, was it? Thanks for making the point.
Go back to the OS that worked lightly or check in on the MB forums and stick it out.

  • Upgrading to Snow Leopard - Memory Question

    Hello,
I am currently in the process of upgrading my macbook to snow leopard and I want to make sure I get the right kind of ram. I currently have 512 mb of ram and hope to increase this to at least 1 gb. I am not sure what generation my macbook is, but I currently have Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11. Currently the ram I have is DIMM DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz.
Could someone please point me in the right direction in terms of the right kind of ram to buy. I plan to purchase from Best Buy because I have gift cards I would like to use.
Thank you very much for the help.

Ahh, the first one. That model supports a maximum of 2 GBs. Get two 1 GB memory modules to replace the two currently installed.
FWIW, you can find the tech specs at support.apple.com/specs/. You have the first MacBook model - 2006. It's a Core Duo model, and is a 32-bit only model. Instructions are in the user manual that came with the computer. If you no longer have the manual you will find a PDF version at support.apple.com/manuals/ as well as a small manual on how to install RAM in your computer. You will also find a video tutorial at macsales.com.

  • IPhoto crashes on Snow Leopard, Memory Deallocation Bug

I have on the order of 10 Macs. I also have several sizeable iPhoto libraries that I work on regularly. The libraries are on removable media that can be moved between different computers (eSata and Firewire drives).
For some reason, many months after Snow Leopard was introduced, I still cannot use any of my photo libraries under the new OS. Every time I try, I get a crash almost immediately. I have reported this bug to Apple many many times. If you look at the stack dump, it is quite obviously a memory deallocation bug that causes a stack overflow. I cannot comprehend how Apple has been unable to fix this 5 months after I first reported it and how it can still be there.
Yesterday, I purchased a brand new MacBook 15" with an i7 processor and a 500GB SSD. I was hoping that the bug in iPhoto or the OS had finally been fixed and eagerly loaded one of my photo libraries onto the built-in 500GB SSD of the new MacBook.
Alas, it took less than an hour to get iPhoto to crash - while it was searching for Faces. This is absurd. I have been using this same library across many different computers running Leopard as recently as two days ago. The library works on any computer running Leopard and crashes any computer running Snow Leopard almost immediately.
Unfortunately, it also doesn't appear to be a specific problem related to the file structure of this particular library. I have at least 4 iPhoto libraries, containing entirely different photos, that all manage to crash Snow Leopard and all run for days of nonstop work on Leopard.
Apple, please fix this. This is ridiculous. Just look at the crash report below and you can see what is wrong. And I have been sending full detailed crash dumps to Apple on this at least 20 times including the full binary.

  • Snow Leopard Memory Saturation

Hey, does anyone else have a problem with the memory in your machines when using Snow Leopard being saturated? I can open 1 Firefox window and iTunes and I start to lag with Snow Leopard, but in Leopard, that doesnt happen. Right now I have two Safari windows open and iTunes running in the background, and my memory is still running at more then 1/2. I'm really wondering if this is a bug with Snow Leopard, as it was with Microsoft Vista, or if my machine has some odd issue. I've got an iMac 9,1 (2.66GHz, 4GB DDR3, 640GB HD, 9400m) with 10.6.2 and all of the latest updates installed.

Unless you're having problems, you shouldn't worry too much about RAM. Right now, my machine has almost 3/4 of its 4 GB of RAM in use (counting wired, active and inactive), and all I've got running is Safari and Mail. However, I can very easily (and often do) also open Photoshop Elements, Aperture, TextWrangler, Transmit, MAMP, Firefox, Pages and a few other apps here and there, and have no lag problems whatsoever.
If you're having lag issues, RAM is one thing you need to consider, but not the only thing. As Mr. Boyd mentions, RAM isn't the issue if Page Outs are low compared to Page Ins. How much hard drive space do you have free? You need to have at least 5-10% free or performance will suffer. Do you have hard drive problems? Try to [repair the hard drive with Disk Utility|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417]. Do you have any processes hogging the processor (open Activity Monitor and look at the CPU column)?
Take a look at the [Mac OS X speed FAQ|http://www.index-site.com/Macosxspeed.html] for more information.

  • Snow Leopard RAM Usage

    Hello all!
I'm coming from a WIN XP background with this first question.
While the 64bit version of Windows allows access to more RAM, it is said that the OS itself uses considerably more than the 32bit versions, making the benefits slimmer than expected. Is this the case with Snow Leopard?
I'm thinking of upgrading a MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard so I could move up from 4Gb to 8Gb RAM for Logic and FCP.
The second question is more for confirmation. Will my 32bit versions of Office and Finale work on Snow Leopard? I suspect that they will, but I'm still asking.
    Could you share experiences, please?
    Thanx!

The short answer: Snow Leopard does not use more RAM, and 32-bit applications will run fine on it.
The long answer: Snow Leopard generally uses less memory than Leopard. You'll note that you don't need Snow Leopard to use 64-bit applications or access more memory. You can do that with Leopard. Also, depending on your hardware, the base OS for Snow Leopard may still start in 32-bit mode -- Snow Leopard is both a 32-bit and 64-bit OS and which kernel and drivers it loads depends on the hardware detected. The way OS X is designed, however you can access >4G with the OS and you can run 64-bit applications atop the 32-bit operating system (and the 64-bit applications can access >4G per-process), and 32-bit applications run identically. What running the 64-bit kernel and drivers buys you are optimizations specific to the 64-bit instruction sets and added registers for in-kernel operations.
In short, nothing about Snow Leopard changes how much memory you can use or compatibility with software (on the basis of whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit). The major compatibility concern for Snow Leopard is that it drops support for PowerPC processors. It will still run PPC apps, but the OS itself will not install on older Macs with PPC processors.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
One thing is the memory, and another thing is the hard disk space. You are telling me that you have 200 GB of free space on the hard disk, but the App Store is telling you that you have to install 2 GB of memory or more on your Mac if you want to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
First of all, open  > About this Mac > More Info, and copy "Model Identifier" here, so we can know what Mac you have got and how much memory you can install.
We recommend to buy the memory in OWC or Crucial (Crucial is cheaper and offers the same compatibility warranty as OWC) because you won't probably have any problem with the memory you buy there

  • After installing Snow Leopard I can no longer "save photos on computer" after inserting a memory stick to an HP Photosmart C5180 All in 1                                                                                           Photosmart C5180 All in one

    Hello,
When I insert a memory stick into my HP Photosmart C5180 All in one and I try to "save photos on computer" the printer reads: "You need to install device software". This all started happening after I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac 10.6.8. Can someone please advise on what I need to do?

Typically it's a good idea to uninstall any devices attached to the Mac before doing an upgrade.  This prevents problems that can be caused by the upgrade.  Below are the instructions for uinstalling and reinstalling the printer.  I'm also going to include a link to the full feature software and drivers for the printer.  Let me know what happens.

I have the original snow leopard disc and I think it's a retail version . Please guide me through the installation in details. Can you also please let me know about this boot camp.

You cannot. From a legal standpoint, the license agreement for OS X mandates that you run OS X only on Apple hardware. HP is not (yet) owned by Apple.
From a technical standpoint, your HP laptop doesn't use EFI, but rather an early predecessor called a BIOS. Apple is the only vendor of consumer computer hardware that uses EFI; other vendors reserve EFI for use in servers.
Secondly, Apple's operating systems support a rather limited number of configurations of video hardware and mainboard chipsets directly since they need only support those systems that they manufacture. You cannot use Windows software or drivers on OS X, so prior to installation, you would need to write your own hardware drivers for your laptop, create an OS X drive image on a Mac, and then modify that image with your drivers before putting it in the HP.
It will be simpler (and legal), to simply purchase a used Mac. Apple's online store has refurbished MacBook Airs starting at $850 and Mac Minis for $700. If you go to e-bay or craigslist, you'll find used Macs for considerably less.

Does anyone else think that the AppleMac group of products are marketed in a greedy way? I have MacBook Pro 10.5.8 with Leopard and am now told that I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard so that my system can download the relevant iTunes upgrade to sync my new iPad and get my audiobooks (which don't appear anywhere on the device right now). Of course there isn't enough memory on the MacBook and Snow Leopard costs more also? I don't have financial resources to pay for all the new memory requirement and related upgrades they say I need just to sync my iPad with my purchases.

Thanks for the reply but I already knew this. $20 for Snow Leopard which asks for 5gb free memory. I can only see that I have 4 gb (which I feel is rather a pathetic amount of available memory for any computer). To upgrade this computer's memory will cost another fee (I haven't researched this yet but gather it's more than $20). Then of course I could also be told that the OSX Mackbook Pro that I have can't be memory upgraded - which means I'm being told to buy a new computer - hence my very frustrated last email. I have been given a lovely iPad 2 as a present and now can't sync at all with anything because of this ongoing upgrade nightmare. How on earth am I going to be able to sync my movies, audiobooks etc to this new device??

Did you click on the little triangle? Did you select one of the document files before pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window? If the panel is closed it looks like this:
If you then click on that little triangle gadget you get this:
A temporary solution is to CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the document file, navigate to the Open With item, and select from the sub-menu.
The first method makes the association permanent. This method only applies to the currently selected document.
