Snow Leopard Not Correctly Reconnecting to SMB Shares after Network Interruption

Occasionally, my wireless connection will drop for a fraction of a second. When it comes back up (almost immediately), everything works as normal on my MacBook (Snow Leopard) except for the connections to the shares I have on my Windows 7 box. It shows the root folders and items as it should, but the folders are empty (and even labelled "no items"). Ejecting and attempting to reconnect doesn't work at all (Finder simply hangs). And to make things stranger, the drive I have shared from my Linux box (via SMB also) does actually reconnect properly. This also happens if, for some reason, I need to reboot my Windows box. The only solution I've found is to reboot the Mac. Which, as you might imagine, is a pain if you're in the middle of something. Any clues as to how to address this?
Thanks,
Sam

Renew your lease. Also try resetting the IP's. And unplud the router for a bit and restart it.

  • Can't connect to SMB share after upgrade

Just upgraded to 10.9 Mavericks and can no longer connect to our SMB file share on the network.  Several of us have tried connecting to it on this machine and all we get is
There was a problem connecting to the server "xxxxxxx.domain.com".
You do not have permission to access this server.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have been searching high and low since yesterday afternoon for an answer to this.  My problem is not connecting to an SMB share (well, it was, as the old Cmd+K to connect to the SMB share would close quickly) but instead of the old Mac way of using Cmd+K and the IP address, I simply clicked on the available NAS SMB share under Shared and it is a massively fast connection.  The old SMB connection would take minutes to open the next folder. So, connecting as you would under Windows helped fix that problem, BUT...
    1.  The NAS SMB share times out regularly and you have to eject & reconnect.  Annoying.
    2.  Worse than this is I can not open any documents on the share, only navigate it.  I have to copy paste the documents to my local ssd, manipulate, copy back.  Any new file I copy on, or edit and copy on, the NAS SMB share I can navigate to and open.  But if I try to click a pre-Mavericks existing file, I get "Can not open 'excel/word/acrobat.app' with the -36" error.  Total BS.
    3.  Even more weird, if I click spacebar on ANY file on the SMB Share it will pop up in preview.  Double click to open and error message.
    4.  If I copy a document attached to an email (Outlook 2011) to the server it is corrupt.  If I copy the file to local ssd, then to the NAS SMB, the same file works perfectly fine.
This is completely ridiculous and needs a fix immediately.  I'm going to try using Reinfire's link right now and see if that helps.
My NAS is a Netgear ReadyNAS 516 (linux/unix OS) I use in my office.  Computer is MBPr March 2013.

  • Can't access smb shares after 10.9.5 upgrade

After the upgrade to 10.9.5 (from 10.9.4) I can not anymore access my smb shares on a NAS server (Thecus N3200PRO) dispite the upgrade says that it "improves the reliability of accessing files located on an SMB server". It had the exact opposite effect with my system.
The NAS server is visible, but after I log in no files or folders are shown (finder window is empy). Also to disconnect the smb share it takes much longer than usual.
To access it with cifs protocol does not help, neither.
Also the workaround by Reinfire (Michael Larson in Can't connect to SMB share after upgrade, to use smb1 instead of the upgrade) does not help at all.
    Any solution out there?
    -- thanks

    hi there,
just a wild guess, but have you tried to connect via Terminal?
    /sbin/mount_smbfs //userid:password@ip-of-server/name-of-share
    or
    /sbin/mount_smbfs //userid:password@dns_name-of-server/name-of-share
You need to have administrative privileges on your Mac to execute said command successfully.
For additional information you can enter (while in Terminal):
    man mount_smbfs
    and
    man nsmb.conf
Glad to hear the problem is solved

  • Help: Unicode issue in Snow Leopard not in Leopard?

    Hello All,
I've finally switched from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
    I'm loving the improvements.
But, I do have one issue.
I like to keep things tidy and orderly on my computer.
In Leopard I had been using a number of characters from the Unicode Miscellaneous Symbols and Pictorgraphs block (U+1F300-1F3FF) in the names of my folders and files, to make them easy to organise and quickly identify (a book for books, a family for family, a plane for travel, etc).
Under Leopard, this system worked very well.
Under Snow Leopard, it's not working at all. Even though I've placed the correct font in the System folder (Symbola).
Is there something I can do to fix the problem?
Why did it work under Leopard and not work under Snow Leopard?
I'm including a screenshot of the problem in just one folder on my computer.
    But the problem is everywhere.
Incidentally, the airplane is actually from a different Unicode block (well within the BMP).

Looks like a bug.  You can report here:

  • Password in Mail Snow Leopard not accepted

I have an att.net email address through yahoo and try to use it through mail in snow leopard. However, when I click on the Mail icon, it asks "Enter password for account "smtp.att.yahoo.com:my email address". I use the password I use when I go to my email through yahoo, but it doesn't work. Any suggestions? I hate going through yahoo to get my mail.
    Thanks

In Mail > Preferences > Accounts - Account Information
    Shows your incoming mail settings
    This should set to pop.att.yahoo.com
With your user name and password set.
At the bottom of this window is the outgoing smtp server
Click on the drop down arrow next to your server name and select edit smtp server list
With your server highlighted at the top,
Click on Account Information - Server name should read - smtp.att.yahoo.com
    Click on Advanced
Make sure 'Use default ports is checked
Make sure the username and password are correct - retype it to make sure
    Click OK
Back in the Accounts window, click on Advanced
Set the port to 995 and tick use SSL
    Set the authentication to Password.
If you are still not getting anywhere, log into Yahoo and search their help pages for 'pop email setup' and these settings should be offered to you. I do not have an account there, so I can't check this for myself.
    Hope this helps

  • Time Machine to Snow Leopard not working

Ok, so this issue appears to be multi-faceted so please bear with me as I try to fully explain what's happening.
I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6.8, and I decided to give Yosemite a try since it was free. Before upgrading, I did a Time Machine backup on an external 500GB WD drive in case I wanted to switch back to Snow Leopard.
I did the upgrade, but wasn't very pleased with the results. Seeing as how the computer was older I figured it would slow down a touch, but what broke the deal was when I tried to run After Effects and had plugins - that never gave me trouble before - crashing. I decided to restore from Time Machine and rebooted into Recovery Mode. However, by accident I selected the External Drive with the backups as my boot disk. I quickly rebooted AGAIN and selected the Recovery drive, but the TM drive wasn't showing up when I tried to access it for the backup.
I rebooted back to Yosemite and found that the drive was not mounting despite lighting up and making spinny sounds. Disk Utility could see it but was unable to repair, so I used DiskWarrior instead. Everything seemed to work out ok and the drive was reading on my desktop as a TM backup. I rebooted AGAIN to recovery mode, selected the appropriate backup, and let the computer do it's work overnight.
When I woke up in the morning and checked in on it, I got an error message saying that the restoration had FAILED at some point along the way. I tried to reboot normally, but the grey screen of death would appear after a few seconds and I'd have to shut down.
I went back to Recovery mode, tried to access the TM drive, but once again it was not showing up! So I reinstalled Yosemite and was able to login to my desktop. The TM drive was still showing up, and according to a reinstalled DiskWarrior the drive was fine. I rebooted in Recovery, selected the TM backup, and it only took about 20 minutes before the restoration failed! This time the computer appeared to be wiped clean, with no OS.
Fortunately I still had my Snow Leopard install DVD, so I managed to reinstall it from there. However, now I CANNOT login. My username shows up but the password I've used for FOUR YEARS is constantly rejected. I can't even login to the GUEST account!
If you've made it this far, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Pondini - I have an issue too. And so I went to the troubleshooting tips you listed here and was not able to find a solution. Specifically, I don't get a message. I plain ole don't get nothing. After I installed Snow my first backup failed. Funny thing is the backup on my wifes computer also failed. She does not have an Intel Mac. It's a PowerBook G4. Hence no Snow Leopard there. I have a iMac 24 Aluminum. My Time Capsule backup worked fine until Snow. My TC is wired via ethernet. There is no latest date. When Time Machine backup starts the TM preference pane says it's "Making disk available" Something to that effect. And that's where it stays. If I then try to do anything with the preference panel - like close it - I find out the Preferences are not responding. So I force quit. I try to stop Time Machine backups and it's no good. The TM indicator - that little backwards running clock - in the menu bar just keeps on it's merry little way. The only way to stop it - shutdown. Strange thing is shutdown then refuses to - well, shutdown. I end up having to hold the power button for 5 seconds. I don't get error messages. I get nothing indicating what may be causing this problem. I have been searching these and other forums looking for an answer. I had hoped the user tips you listed would have a solution, but, alas, no. I deleted the timemachine plist in the "higher" library. No luck. I have powered down everything. No luck. Those were two ideas I saw that said they worked. So where do I go from here? Where do I look for error messages that will point me in the right direction? I'd appreciate any help from anybody.

  • Snow leopard not able to get on a network?

    Hello All,
I have been using 10.6.1 for about a week now and have just now run into an issue where when I am at home, my system will not communicate with any other system internally or get out to the web. It had been working fine until about 3 hours ago. I have been trying to get it to work and decided its time to ask for some help.
All of my systems including this one are on a wireless network and all of my other systems (Windows and Linux) are able to communicate with each other. My snow leopard system is the only one not able to communicate.
My snow leopard system is getting an IP address with all of the right settings to be able to connect with other systems internally and also to get out to the web but whenever I try I get absolutely nothing. My wireless signal is at full strength as well.
If I ping google, I don't get that request was sent or received, it just sits there. If I try to ping a system internally it simply tells me the request timed out. The ping tests were both attempted to a direct IP address and also to the name that the IP address is associated with.
Has anyone run into this problem? Does anyone know of any other way to debug this? Im completely stumped...
Sorry I did forget to mention, the wireless router is an old Linksys BEFW11S4 V.2 so it is several years old with no firmware updates (I don't know how to do that at all)

My situation is similar, although it began when I installed software for a Time Capsule. My MacBook Pro accessed my network just fine. After I made the TC my main base station, I've been unable to connect my MBP to the network. Any time I try to connect, almost immediately, the attempt fails. Where my problems differs is I cannot control the Airport card in my MBP. I cannot toggle it on or off, so it currently is on. The two other systems in my house are Leopard (10.5.8) and connecting normally. Seems SL is at fault for me, too.

  • IMac i7 need to install snow leopard NOT Lion - Will it allow the install of 10.6?

I have a bit of a quirk to deal with, a client has a Snow Leopard Network but just recently had a replacement iMac i7 delivered for a previous box from earlier in the year. The IT Contractor is stating that the machine can only take Lion and will not install Snow Leopard. The problem is there is some FileMaker issues that have come up with some deep level custom functions that have exposed a critical problem and the machine needs to run Snow Leopard. This would be until the work around is developed for the software solution or FMI comes out with the next version of FileMaker resolving the issue.
Is the IT Contract full of it ? If not is there a way to force the iMac i7 to accept a Snow Leopard installation ?

For years Macs have not be able to run earlier versions of OS X than they originally shipped with so this is nothing new. It also makes a lot of sense when you think of it, one of the reasons Mac's run so well is the software and hardware are optimized to run well together. Attempting to install an earlier version of OS X than what the machine was designed for is technically possible but it also comes with significant risks because you're then dealing with a system that wasn't designed to run well together...in other words you're emulating the MS Windows world.  While there can be some temporary inconvenience as you're experiencing in this case  Apple makes these decisions for a reason. While not always obvious to we end users but there are good reasons none the less.

  • 2 problems! - RAM module broken & Snow Leopard not loading

    Hi,
    I have 2 problems:
I got Mac Mini (late 2009 model, 2,26ghz, 2gb) upgraded from 2GB to 4GB from this Apple Premium Reseller (http://www.stormfront.co.uk/). When I got it back and switched it on and immediately got 3 beeps which indicated bad ram or logic board. The y took it back and said they sent it to their workshop in Exeter and fixed it. When I switched it on I still got 3 beeps. Took it back to the shop they said don't what to do and get the workshop to ring me back on Monday. At this point I'm fuming!!! So I decided to take apart the Mac MIni myself. Upon discovery that one of the memory modules is broken, I bent the bit metal back and it seems to ok after hardware tests and is working now. What can I do about this? I honestly did not break this and know it was the shop but how I van prove this? What would be done about a replacement as I have no longer sold, would I get a discount on brand new mac mini?
As mentioned above that I took it apart I cant load up Snow Leopard, I just get the Apple logo plus the spinning wheel I can hear some hard drive activity but does nothing ( I left it for 20 mins). I then booted from the SNow Leopard and ran disk verify it came up with errors and said to format and restore, which I have done via Time Machine. But I still get the Apple plus spinning wheel. I know the hard rive ok now because I can boot into Windows via bootcamp. So what I should do?
    Any help would be appreciated.

it seems that it's not emptying trash for you. only emptying trash will actually free up space on the drive. what exactly happens when you empty trash? does it seem to empty?
click on the trash in the dock. is there anything inside?

  • XDCAM inporting with Snow Leopard not possible?

I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro. I'm going to buy a SONY PDW-F350 XDCAM professsional videocamera, but I know read on video-related forums that the transfer plugin that allows to ingest videoclips from an XDCAM-disk Final into Cut Pro does not work with Snow Leopard and that an update is not foreseen until March 2010. I can hardly put my whole business on hold until then. Does anyone know a solution?

sorry - you download the clip browser and final cut pro plug in from the Sony website, just enter Sony XDCam Clip Viewer or Final Cut Pro plug into the search engine to find.

  • Snow Leopard not working after installation

After successful installation of Snow Leopard on a new internal hard drive (connected through IDE to SATA adapter) in my Macbook (late 2006), it is not working. No icon is clickable, only cursor can move. Please help!

  • Problem upgrading to FlashBuilder 4.5 on Snow Leopard (not the known Java issue)

I've just upgraded to Flash Builder 4.5 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard.  I'm finding that no text is rendering at all, either in design view, or in the exported project.
When I use a Label, I simply see nothing where the Label is.  I can move and position the Label, and if I double-click on it, the text will appear in the Label for editing.  But when I deselect the Label, the text appears as though it's not there.  It similarly is not visible in the compiled .swf file.
Likewise, a DropDownList will not render any of its text, either.
Any quick help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks.

May I know which locale are you using on your Mac OSX ?

  • Safari 4 on Snow Leopard not displaying a webpage properly

I know for a fact it is Safari that has a problem because I opened the webpage with Firefox and it displays 100%.
Safari won't load the background image and the album art for a website, firefox can.
Is there something I can download or a fix?

I have no problem loading that site. Did you Repair Disk Permissions after you installed Snow Leopard? If not, do that now. Also, you may be able to resolve your problem by doing all of this:
Quit Safari if it's running and open System Preferences>Network>Advanced.
In the DNS Server window, make sure IPv6 is turned off, and enter these two DNS servers to replace the ones you currently have (if any):
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
click Apply Now and quit System Preferences.
Next, do these things in order:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
    4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites feature, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
    5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    Form Values
    LastSession.plist
    WebpageIcons.db
Then restart Safari and see if the speed is improved.
