A question from Sweden: Can you install SL 10.6 on a macbook pro that shipped with Lion?
your going to need another Mac that can boot off the disks, then T boot off the target Mac first so it's FireWire Target Disk Mode, then connect a Firewire cable then hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, erase the factory Lion machine completely and install OS X 10.6
The firmware will not you boot from earlier OS X install disks on a factory Lion box. You have to work around it to get it on the drive, but once it's there it will be fine.
I just did this, and did not have to Target boot at all. The machine booted right up off the replica 10.6.7 DVD, and was perfectly happy to install 10.6 right over 10.7 without erasing anything. No wacky side effects except a few settings had to be set again where Lion's settings were too different.
If you only have the "Full Retail" 10.6.3 disc, then you WILL have to use another older Mac as intermediary, since the 2011 MacBook Pro needs at least 10.6.6 to boot.
Mine was a refururb, and because it has originally been sold with 10.6, there WAS a 10.6 disc they could copy and send me. They muttered about "ranges of serial numbers". The "first responders" do not know these are available, so you have to be firm, but polite. The answer for your specific Mac may still be no. By year-end, the answer will always be NO.

I have a brand new Macbook pro 17" - shipped with Lion, cannot boot from snow-lopard disk - tech said I would be able to downgrade. I cant because if I try to boot from the CD it just beeps 3 times. Boots just fine from a Lion startup disk I created first. What the heck is going on here? Very upset that i cannot reach apple support in the evening any longer. Just a quick question, are your Fn keys working properly and the 2 fingered scrolling?
I've done much the same with the help of 2 Apple Geniuses who found me an original 10.6.7 install disk for a my new macbook pro.
It installed OK but... Fn keys don't work apart from F3 and F12, the rest give an error sound. 2 fingered scrolling on the trackpad doesn't work either.
Mine was a custom build 15" with hi res glossy screen - I wonder if they've put in the newer wired keyboard mentioned here:

Cannot install Mac OSX Snow Leopard on Macbook Pro Unibody with a new SSD
Hi, I just bought a SSD (OCZ Vertex LE 120GB) to replace the stock SATA HDD. The problem is that the Mac OSX installation fails. I tried a lot of times with no success. Both clean install from DVD or restoration from a Time Machine backup fails.
The problem doesn't happen if I put the same SSD into a PC to install a Linux or Windows. I've read something saying the problem to be at EFI 1.7, SATA bus and even SATA cable in the Macbook Pro. Can anyone help in this issue?IgorOzz wrote:

Do one step at a time, and I highly recommend not "downgrading" the EFI. The unintended consequences might make you throw your MBP out the window.
Yes, use Carbon Copy Clone. Then try to boot from the cloned drive. Hold Option at startup, and it will give you a choice.
If it works, then put it in your MBP. If it doesn't boot, then go to step two, repeat clone, and try again.
My 2010 MBP runs at 3Gbps. I think prior to the 2010 models, Apple had not qualified any drives, other than the ones they put in the MBP's, that could work with 3Gbps drives. You may have one that doesn't. -
My MacBook Pro, 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo gives me an error message during Lion install. My Intel Duo Core is not an Intel Duo Core and cannot install Lion. I already have Snow Leopard what is the problem with Lion?
You need a "Core 2 Duo" for lion, and I'm guessing you only have a "Core Duo" My wife's macbook is also a "Core Duo" and has Snow Leapord, but cannot install Lion.....

The certificate on my applications install DVD for bundled software has expired. I am unable to reinstall with this dvd on my snow leopard on macbook pro. Pl help. If I use Lion, it works fine with the expired certificate. But doesnt work with snowleopard.

some Early 2011 MacBook Pros originally came with Snow Leopard installed, and some originally came with Lion installed. If yours originally came with Snow Leopard installed, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard from its model-specific grey Mac OS X Install DVD. (The white retail Snow Leopard DVD can’t be used with it; it was made for use with earlier models, which originally came with either Tiger or Leopard installed.) If yours originally came with Lion installed, then it won’t accept any Snow Leopard DVD; instead, you’d be able to use OS X Internet Recovery to download and install its original version of Lion from Apple’s servers. -

The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available at this time from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion is part of the 10.6.6 update.
If you wait to long and they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already over $100 on Amazon.

How to install Snow Leopard on Macbook Pro? keep getting msg- cannot install Internal HD is used for Time Machine- this was reset to external HD and still get msg?
At some point, your internal HD was selected for use as Time Machine backups, and a Backups.backupdb folder was created at the top level. So OSX thinks you're trying to install it on the same drive as your backups.
Open your internal HD with the Finder (you won't find it via a Spotlight or Finder search) and delete that folder. -
My MacBook Pro came with Lion pre-installed so I can't re-download it from the app store. Is it possible to get the installESD.dmg file and how can I get it if I can't re-download Lion in Apple Store option?
FYI Mac OS X is not designed to be installed on additional Macs, unless you purchased it from the App Store, in which case you can make as many copies as you wish and install it on as many Macs as you own.

I bought a macbook pro 2011 2.2 ghz quad core i7 and would like to install snow leopard in one partition to run older software. I had the full version of os leopard, but can't install in the new macbook pro to upgrade to snow leopard. I can't upgrade snow leopard in my power G5 either because it needs intel cpu.
