Snow Leopard on new Mac Book Pro

Hi everyone,
Well, this is a question I'm sure a lot of people want to know. I bought a new 13" i5 and need to take it back to SL since the main program I want to run on it, Pro Tools, won't run on Lion. If anyone has already done this, let me know. I'm currently try to boot to SL 10.6.8. I'll let you know how it goes.

Mark:
What is the model identifier for your Mac.  You can find it in the System Profiler.
MacTracker lists the latest 13" MacPro as Model Identifier   MacBookPro8,1

  • Lion versus Snow Leopard, a new MAC Book Pro series coming?

My son is looking for a new laptop. He would opt for function over portability. Therefore larger MAC Book Pro makes sense but seems as if MAC Book Air has newer operating system so concern is life.

A MacBook Pro is more likely to support more games.
A MacBook Air is more portable.  An addon Apple Thunderbolt display gives almost all the same ports as a Pro, but then it loses its portability.
A MacBook Pro has more connections for digital cameras, and the 17" version also supports faster hard drives via its Express/34 port which can have external SATA added.  The 17" version though only fits on the tray tables of 737/700 and larger tray tables of airlines.  The Pro has a built-in optical drive, where the Air does not. The Air is 2 pounds lighter than the Pro.  On the other hand being more portable, it is easier to get stolen. I would consider Lapcop or Lojack for notebooks if one gets a notebook.  The new operating system as my FAQ* explains still has numerous applications which need upgrading:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html#LION
You can through http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate get the new operating system later if you get a qualifying Mac.  That would give you a chance to upgrade when you desire, and still migrate any data to newer applications when you need to.  The real question is, what sort of compatibility is needed?
As for your subject line, Apple does not pre-announce hardware updates except on rare occasions, and we can't speculate as to when they might release a new one.  Watch http://www.apple.com/pr/
Once they do, it likely won't work with Snow Leopard.

  • Get a copy of OS X Snow Leopard for my Mac Book Pro

I bought my MacBook Pro 17" about a year ago and it came with preinstalled OS X Snow Leopard. Now when I'm upgrading to Lion I'll need a copy of Snow Leopard running on parallel desktop. My question is, can I somehow get it on a CD? Or maybe download it via iTunes?

Did a MB Pro (2010 version) actually come with an installation disc for OS X? If so, I'll look around. Maybe I'll find it. I just need to know that it does...
MBP 2010's came with 10.6.3, so either the grey disks with free iLife or the 10.6.3 retail disks will do the job.
I'd go with the grey disks if you not in a hurry, you can make copies here

Mail has gone crazy. Header's and messages are mixed up. New Mac Book Pro. Migrated files from Time machine running snow leopard. Reinstall or new computer needed?

Ok; I'm not sure what you're doing.    36 hours is rather long.  Seems like a new migration.  Not what I intended.
Here's what I intended: from the newly-migrated and apparently-corrupt environment, create a new user, not related to any existing user, nor any migration-created user, or any other user for that matter.  That is, use  > System Preferences > Users and Groups, authenticate yourself by clicking on the padlock, and then click the + and create a wholly new user.  Then log in under that user and establish the mail access.
36 hours?  I'm wondering if there's an error or an exceedingly slow network here?  Or a really, really slow disk?  Or a sick backup?  (WiFi isn't the path I'd usually choose, either.)
Failing the attempted second migration, I'd try a different tactic.  Does your existing (old) system work?   If so, I'd bypass the backup and connect an external (scratch) USB disk drive to the (old) sstem and then boot and use Disk Utility booted from the installer DVD disk or boot and use Disk Utility from the recovery partition or booted from a recovery partition created on some other external storage (details here vary by the OS X version and what hardware you have), and perform a full-disk backup of your original internal disk to (scratch) external storage.  (Make sure you get the source and target disks chosen correctly here; copying the wrong way — from the scratch disk to your existing disk — will clobber your data!)  In esssence, this will clone your existing boot disk.  Then dismount the (formerly-scratch) external disk, transfer it over to the new system, and use it as the source of the migration, by performing a fresh OS X installation on the new system.
Target Disk Mode is also sometimes an option for accessing the disk for a migration, but that requires the right cable, and requires systems that have the same external connection; newer MacBook Pro systems use Thunderbolt for this, and older systems tend to use FireWire.  And I'm guessing you don't have compatible hardware.
The details here can and do vary by your OS X versions and your particular Mac systems — if you'll identify the specific models and hardware, somebody might be able to better tailor the above (fairly generic) sequence to your particular configuration.

Oh yeah, forgot about that, I would choose to get a faster internet connection before  I got a new computer so I rarely think that way, thanks.
Well honestly my internet was fast enough for me unit I got a MBP that you had to use the internet to reinstall the OS. Because it didn't come with a $.32 DVD disc.
I have a 50mbps connection, kinda skews my viewpoint regarding internet speed.

  • Hi, I bought a new Mac Book Pro, very high spec, installed Lion and now the machine is slow, glitchy. how do i wipe it and put Leopard back on it? any help would be great..?

    Hi,
I bought a new Mac Book Pro a couple of months ago the new model, very high spec, i7 processor, 500g solid state drive, 8 gig of ram. all in all a very fast machine. however, i foolishly downloaded OS X Lion and as soon as i did i noticed a considerable difference in the machine basically its ground to a halt, its now slow glitchy programs shut down and crash. I'm new to Mac and in reminded of life in the world of Windows....! any suggestions should i wipe Lion off the machine and re install Leopard? any help would be appreciated..
    Liam

Surely you meant to say that there was nothing in Lion you would prefer over !10.6! - Lion is 10.7.
As for what might be sapping your machines juice - have you run Activity Monitor yet? I always enable 'All Processes' and sort it by %CPU usage if i want to know whats cooking.
In addition to the list Disk Activity might give a hint.
If you are quite low on available disk space it might also be that osx is constantly swapping - best to keep a few GB of free space for it to work with.

  • Bought a New Mac Book Pro last week, can I get a free upgrade to Lion?

To cut a long story short, I bought a new Mac Book Pro Last week, it is only 6 days old now, it was nearly 2 grand and comes with Snow Leopard, today on their website I saw Lion OS Advertised as 'coming soon to a mac near you' or something. I was just wondering, as I've just spent nearly 2 grand on a Mac Book last week, would I be eligible for a free upgrade to Lion when it comes out?
I think you should be as when I bought it i was never informed there was a new OS coming out soon, does anyone know the answer? Or how much it may be to upgrade? as after spending £1899 I don't want to have to pay £100+ to upgrade a month later or so.
    Kind Regards,
    Chris

Lion won't be out until middle of next year, so you are not entitled to any upgrade. But you may be entitled to the iLife '11 software if it isn't already installed. Check the Apple website for any Up to Date offer.
+No merchandiser is required to inform you of a new product not yet available. If you think they are then you are poorly informed.+

  • Do you need to buy antivirus and firewall software for a new mac book pro?

If you purchase a new Mac book pro retina does it need antivirus and firewall products?

No. Although disabled when you buy it, OS X has a built-in firewall that you can easily turn on should you need to. You would only need to if you were connecting to public Wi-Fi networks like at Starbucks. AV protection is also built-in to OS X.

i cannot get my nikon software to install on my new mac book pro with lion
can anyone help me get my software installed
i need this software to work immediately because without it i am unable to work that is the programs on how i process my photographs and without it i cannot make any money
    thank you

That seems to be supported only up through 10.5.7 and probably needs Rosetta for it to run.
Rosetta is not included in 10.7.
If this is the case, you may need to partition your hard drive, install Windows on it, and use that partition for your work.

  • I just downloaded Snow Leopard to my Mac Book, now my ICalendar says I cant use this version of iCal with this version of Mac OS X, i currently have ICal 3.0.8.....what do i need to do?

I just downloaded Snow Leopard to my Mac Book, now my ICalendar says I cant use this version of iCal with this version of Mac OS X, i currently have ICal 3.0.8.....what do i need to do?

Your profile shows you are running Snow Leopard. Put the Safari version you now have into the Trash. You need to reinstall Snow Leopard.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

For example so that I can just press shift or another key to get the German character.

Some may already exist, but you will have to learn them.  On my old system these can be found through keyviewer.app  For example, if I press option+s I get ß   Umlaut is a bit cumbersome as option+u then the actual letter.  It may be possible to bind a key to do this function, possibly through System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts
I have old, old references for utilities that let you rebind keys to other functions, and you would have to see if they have modern equivalents.
Ukelele Mac OS X Keyboard Layout Editor - http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=ukelele - mostly useful for character, not function mapping.
