Snow leopard on shut down doesn't completely turn off computer I just get a blank screen but the curser is still live

I have just installed snow leopard on my Mac Pro (v10.5.8) on trying to shut down on the apple menu it doesn't completely turn off computer, I just get a blank screen but the curser is still live and I have to hold down the power button to force a shut down.

Try quitting all applications before shutting down. One may be hanging and preventing a normal shutdown.

  • After failed reinstall of Snow Leopard, MacBook shuts down on startup

Went to reinstall Snow Leopard on my 1.5-year-old MacBook, and inexplicably it told me it "can't install" the OS on the hard drive. Had to restart, and upon restart, it gave me a progress bar at the bottom of the gray screen with the Apple logo, and shut down. This is now what happens every time. What's happened??

See if it will boot in Safe Mode. (hold the Shift key when booting.)

  • My iMac is frozen on a blue screen during an update software for snow leopard. What do I do? Turn off my imac?

My iMac is frozen on a blue screen during an update of software for snow leopard. What do I do?  Should I turn off the computer?

do a hard shutdown of the mac (holding down the power button until it shuts off) then do an SMC reset, the following article tells how to do this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
after doing this reset and restarting the mac, try again to install the update.

  • Can anybody tell me why Safari keeps shutting down after 1 or 2 mins use?  It will start up again, but the same thing happens.

This problem has only been noticeable for the last 2 weeks, so do you know of anything which may have caused this problem and if so, how can I put it right?

There is no "Restore Safari" on the iPad.
You can try using Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies and Data and Clear History
That may help. You can also reset your iPad:
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off".
These steps might help with Safari crashes.

  • I just completed a keynote presentation, but it will not "play"...I just get a blank slide (probably the final slide) when I hit the play button, even though I can see all the slides are in the list and will open as I click on them. HELP!

I just completed a keynote presentation but it will not "Play".  I can see the slides are in place, but all that comes to the screen when I hit the play arrow is the last, blank, slide. HELP!

At the risk of stating the obvious, is your first slide highlighted before you hit play?  You mentioned the last blank slide shows up which could mean you have that last slide highlighted.  If the last slide is highlighted and you hit play then that is the slide that will show up and if it's your last slide that is all you will see.
    Make sense?

I need to upgrade to mac os snow leopard from 10.5.8, and have the lion OS usb. I can't upgrade to snow leopard as my father doesn't remember the admin password.  If anyone can help it would be appreciated

Restart with the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD in the drive or with the Lion USB drive connected, hold down the Option key just after the restart, tab to the installation disk, and press Enter. If the computer has a firmware password set, it needs to be provided for this to work.

  • Hacker problems so I reloaded Snow Leopard. Afterwards, Mac had to delete 798 items. Now looping on 4 items to delete for the past 2 weeks. Can't reboot, reload, or restart. I have to let the battery run down for it to turn off. How to fix this, please?

I had hacker problems so I reloaded Snow Leopard. Afterwards, Mac had to delete 798 items. Now it is looping on 4 items to delete for the past 2 weeks. I can't reboot, reload, or restart. I have to let the battery run down for it to turn off. I think a big part of the problem is that someon one the internet (the hacker) was mirroring my hard drive. It seems to have locked up my system. I could be wrong about this guess, though. All I do know is that it is now looping on the last 4 iems, and I can't do anything.
Well, I can get it to turn on, but all it does is continously try to delete the last 4 items. When I try to reload Snow Leopard, it tells me my hard drive is full and that I need to delete items.
Can anyone help? I am so lost without my Mac. I am back on the PC, and though it works, I'm sure many of you will understand when I say it's just not a Mac.
    Thanks.

I installed Snow Leopard using my Apple external Superdrive. I followed directions I found on the Apple site. Here is the article info:  Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard: How to Erase and Install
                     Article HT3910
                     located at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3910
Everything was going smoothly until I got to the reinstall part. I had to choose to reinstall on a hard drive or network drive. I've never used a network drive; just the hard drive. It seems that's where the troubles began. I selected the hard drive. It seemed to go well, and then I got the message that I needed to delete some files because I was out of space. I chose to get rid of my music files, but, there were only 636. I don't know what the rest of the files were. I was using the Secure Empty Trash command.
That was my first time doing an erase and install. I tried to do it again, but I now get a continuous error telling me that my hard drive is full and I must delete files. Only I can't delete files because 4 files are still being deleted and my computer won't let me stop the process.
I found out about the hackers mostly by the fact that whenever I used to watch something like Hulu or Netflix, I never had problems with internet connection or speed. Lately, I had internet connection problems. I went in to check my settings for my internet provider and found out the settings had been changed to public and all these extra computers were connected to my network.

  • Snow Leopard (10.6.4) Doesn't See Time Capsule Printer But 10.5.8 Does

Snow Leopard (10.6.4) doesn't recognize the Lexmark printer connected to my Time Capsule v 7.4.2. However, the printer is nicely recognized on Leopard (10.5.8) on my PowerBook as well as on the two Windows computers in my Home. In fact, with printer sharing activated on my PowerBook, the printer appears in the Add Printer dialog of my Mac Mini as a shared printer from the PowerBook, but not directly from the Time Capsule.
I have tried rebooting, upgrading to the latest software upgrades to no avail.
    Any ideas ?

After all, the printer wasn't "Bonjour visible" in the list of available printers on 10.5.8 either, but it still worked after the earlier setup. Restarting the Time Capsule fixed the problem.

  • Restoring Snow Leopard after Mountain Lion update, last complete backup in March?

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, but many of our kids' apps no longer work, so I'd like to go back. Using the Snow Leopard install disk, I know I can restore from one of my Time Machine backups. Unfortunately the last complete backup was in March, and that's most recent version the software says I can select. I would like to restore my machine to its state the day before I upgraded to Mountain Lion.
If I restore to its March state - the last complete backup - can I then restore it to its state in July? How do I do it?
    Thanks for your help!
    Don

    DragonDonaldo,
Going back to your original post, are the applications that no longer work in Mountain Lion Power PC applications?  If so, have you checked with the developers of those applications to see if newer versions are available?  Updating those applications would save you the grief of having to backtrack on your OS.
Option #2 would be to create a second partition on your drive (or use an external drive) and install Snow Leopard and the incompatible applications on that partition (or the drive).  Again, this may also be an easier solution than trying to backtrack.

    try a reset.
Hold the home & power buttons down simultaneously until you see the Apple logo appear.

Try installing the 10.6.8 Combo update which contains all the latest updates for that OS.  Be aware that there appears to be no further support for Snow Leopard.
