Snow Leopard, Parallels and the Day After!
Yesterday I installed Parallels 6 and spent several happy hours enjoying the benefits of that advanced and visually stunning operating system . . . . . Windows 7.
Everything seemed to work perfectly until I switched my iMac on this morning, when I immediately noticed 2 things.
1. My startup chime nearly deafened me! For the past couple of years I have had an app called "Startup Sound" residing in my System Preferences, whose job is to reduce the sound to a very low and pleasing level.
On checking in SP I found that the volume settings had not altered . . . . . . I thought they may have returned to the normal maximum setting.
Anyone know whether Parallels knocks out "Startup Sound"?
2. The actual startup process took twice as long as normal. This could be coincidence as occasionally this does happen. I suppose only time will tell, but it occurred to me that having 2 operating systems residing on one HD might account for the increased startup time.

I decided not to wait until tomorrow, so I shut down and relaunched my iMac a couple of times.
The startup sound was once again suitably low and the startup time was much quicker, though still a little longer than the fastest I get of under a minute (I have a lot of "Login Items").
So it looks as though it was a one-off coincidence.

Snow Leopard Install and the Grey Spinning Wheel
So, I purchased Snow Leopard (says it's 10.6.3) this afternoon, and after the very long install process, got stuck with the grey screen with the apple and the spinning wheel, and nothing further will happen. I read on a few other posts that doing the install again eventually fixed the problem, but I have tried 3 times now and nothing is working. I know this is a problem lots of people have had, but I haven't been able to identify the solution for it, and Apple is closed for the holidays. Any help would be appreciated.
BTW, I had been running Tiger, and I have a 13.3 inch Mac Book.Do you have your original Tiger installation discs? If so then you can reinstall it if anything goes wrong. At this point you cannot clone the system since it no longer functions correctly, so it's best to simply backup your data so it isn't lost.
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
4. Press COMMAND-E.
5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
/usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
I would suggest the following procedure for erasing the drive before installing Snow Leopard:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation. -
Snow Leopard, Exchange and the never ending quest to check my email
I don't think I'll get the check my email before I graduate. I've been trying for over a year and I still can't get my email to play nicely in the sandbox with my computer. The old Mail didn't work because Exchange wasn't supported... now I've upgraded to Snow Leopard where I was assured by the Apple people and the IT guys that new Mail would work... now however I've discovered that our Exchange server isn't right (something about server pack 4). I would really love to be able to see my email on my computer... does anybody have any creative ideas for accessing Exchange accounts via Mail for Mac?
Make sure you are checking the email address you used to set up your iCloud account. Check the spam/junk folder as well as the inbox. If it isn't there, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage your Apple ID, sign in, click on Name, ID and Email addresses on the left, then to the right click Resend under your Primary Email Address to resend the verification email.

Snow Leopard Server and FCServer
Hi.
I'm running FCServer on an iMac, and I'm currently looking for the best solution for giving co-workers outside of our office network remote access to our FCS database. The main purpose for this is for remote users to screen and download episode segments and movies from our database.
I was initially thinking VPN would be the only solution, but then I saw Snow Leopard Server has 'Mobile Access Server' built right into the OS, which appears designed to help users avoid having to use a VPN.
Before I go out and buy SLS for the company, I want to be sure it will work. Am I correct that Snow Leopard Server, and the built-in Mobile Access Server, will allow users outside of our network remote access to our FCSrvr database?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. And if this question is better suited for a different forum please let me know as well.

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard. I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host. But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning. I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen. If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

Ok, tried message boards everywhere to try and figure this out before having to post a question. Have a 21.5" iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. After updates no wireless capability for ipad or laptop, imac connects fine but nothing else. No dashboard widgets work, Skype won't work. What goes?
Your post is pretty lengthy and I have to admit I didn't read it all. Please try restarting in Safe Mode, if that doesn't work please do both a SMC and PRAM reset. These may take 2-3 attempts.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -

Is Snow Leopard part of the gray MacBook Pro disks that were included with the computer when I purchased it. I DO NOT have a disk with SNOW LEOPARD written on it?
Maybe you should first tell us what your problem is. You may not need to reinstall Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard is what your installer disc has - 10.6. Reinstalling may also require installing a number of updates as well. Here's the basic reinstall process:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/. -

When you installed Snow Leopard, Tiger was replaced, leaving your programs and files intact.
What is causing your freezing problem is unknown, you can take Kappy's advice and remove everything, but you lose your files and free iLife programs that came with Tiger/new machine.
The 10.6.3 disk you "upgraded" with has the full 10.6.3 on it, but no free iLife suit, so a erase and install will remove what you already have installed.
You can try to locate your problem without the erase and install method by running through this list of fixes.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
But before you do anything, backup your personal data off the machine to a extenal drive and disconnect.

Because if you have to follow Kappy's advice and wipe and install 10.6 fresh, it will cure your problem in nearly 99% of cases, but you have to rebuild everything. All programs and files.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If this is all too much for you, then STOP and call a local PC/Mac service or competant friend to assist you.
Yuo might need to install more RAM into the machine to make 10.6 run better as well. -
We're setting up our Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server, and in the process transferred files that had been stored and accessed from our Blackarmor NAS server over to the Mac. These files were all created on PC's and are Office Excel files, WordPerfect files or PDF's. When you look at the files on the Mac from the Mac and bring up Get Info for the affected file, it says that the file has Custom Access. The files that work properly don't have that configuration. I can access and open the files on some computers, but some users can't open the files from their computer even though they can see it. We're all using PC's and they get the Error: Access Denied-Contact your administrator--or something similar. I've seen on the web similar issues and it may have something to do with ACL permissions. I don't know enough about Mac OS to understand this, but what is baffling is that they can be opened from some PC's but not others, and all of the Users have the same accessibility to the files. I have a Window 7 HP laptop. I want to install Snow Leopard on an external hard drive as the memory space on my laptop is very less. You cannot. From a legal standpoint, the license agreement for OS X mandates that you run OS X only on Apple hardware. HP is not (yet) owned by Apple.
From a technical standpoint, your HP laptop doesn't use EFI, but rather an early predecessor called a BIOS. Apple is the only vendor of consumer computer hardware that uses EFI; other vendors reserve EFI for use in servers.
Secondly, Apple's operating systems support a rather limited number of configurations of video hardware and mainboard chipsets directly since they need only support those systems that they manufacture. You cannot use Windows software or drivers on OS X, so prior to installation, you would need to write your own hardware drivers for your laptop, create an OS X drive image on a Mac, and then modify that image with your drivers before putting it in the HP.
It will be simpler (and legal), to simply purchase a used Mac. Apple's online store has refurbished MacBook Airs starting at $850 and Mac Minis for $700. If you go to e-bay or craigslist, you'll find used Macs for considerably less. -

I want to install Yosemite onto a 1 TB external hard drive (OWC) , and keep Snow Leopard installed on the internal hard drive. Computer iMac7,1 has been giving sundry problems for sometime. Within the last six weeks I have reinstalled the OS (Snow Leopard),without affecting the overall contents of the hard drive.
±3 weeks later the problems became more serious and I againreinstalled the OS and installed OS 6.6.7 from the internet.
I used the option to restore from the external backup driveand went back some time as it was my intention to reinstall individualcomponent in an attempt to find out where the problem might lie. This hasintroduced an entirely new problem! If I open Time Machine from the desktop itappears that all backups from late 2009 to June 2011 are intact. But, in thiscase there are none of the restore functions &c on screen. The latter areonly shown if Time Machine is opened from the menu bar or from the dock but, inthis case, available are only backups in late 2009!
I also opened the Apple Hardware Test in an attempt toestablish the nature of the problem. The ‘quick’ version said there’s nothingwrong; the more detailed one reported “Error detected, 4HD/11/40000004.” I haveagain tried to employ this test but nothing I do can induce it to open!!!
What to do? I need help urgently and would appreciate anyadvice that offers solutions to the problem.To check your S.M.A.R.T status open disk utility and click on your drive and then click on the info icon.
