Snow Leopard RAM Usage

Hello all!
I'm coming from a WIN XP background with this first question.
While the 64bit version of Windows allows access to more RAM, it is said that the OS itself uses considerably more than the 32bit versions, making the benefits slimmer than expected. Is this the case with Snow Leopard?
I'm thinking of upgrading a MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard so I could move up from 4Gb to 8Gb RAM for Logic and FCP.
The second question is more for confirmation. Will my 32bit versions of Office and Finale work on Snow Leopard? I suspect that they will, but I'm still asking.
Could you share experiences, please?
Thanx!

The short answer: Snow Leopard does not use more RAM, and 32-bit applications will run fine on it.
The long answer: Snow Leopard generally uses less memory than Leopard. You'll note that you don't need Snow Leopard to use 64-bit applications or access more memory. You can do that with Leopard. Also, depending on your hardware, the base OS for Snow Leopard may still start in 32-bit mode -- Snow Leopard is both a 32-bit and 64-bit OS and which kernel and drivers it loads depends on the hardware detected. The way OS X is designed, however you can access >4G with the OS and you can run 64-bit applications atop the 32-bit operating system (and the 64-bit applications can access >4G per-process), and 32-bit applications run identically. What running the 64-bit kernel and drivers buys you are optimizations specific to the 64-bit instruction sets and added registers for in-kernel operations.
In short, nothing about Snow Leopard changes how much memory you can use or compatibility with software (on the basis of whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit). The major compatibility concern for Snow Leopard is that it drops support for PowerPC processors. It will still run PPC apps, but the OS itself will not install on older Macs with PPC processors.

  • Snow Leopard Memory Usage

I have recently downgraded my iMac 8,1 back to Snow Leopard due to an unsupported video card in Lion. Not soon after I downgraded, I started experiencing high cpu usage when the machine would run for long periods of time without being rebooted (6-7 hours).
Currently, the machine has 8GB of RAM (which is all recognized in spite of the documentation stating the max ram on this machine is 6GB). I run, on average 8-10 applications at the same time throughout the day. It appears that the offending application that takes up cpu usage varies throughout the day. This morning, it is iTunes using 85%. Other times, it's Apple Mail. Even others, it's MDWorker (which I'm not confident I know what that is).
What doesn't make sense is that the offending application changes throughout the day. As time passes, sometimes when I attempt to launch a video on a website, it gets real choppy and will not run normally until I reboot. The audio cuts in and out and the frame rate is horrible.
My initial thought was that one of the memory sticks is bad, but these issues don't indicate a memory problem from what I understand. Yesterday, I removed one of the two sticks of RAM and booted to see what performance was like with just 4GB in. It did the same thing even after only 5 minutes running. I have also considered a memory leak, but that in itself shouldn't cause abnormal CPU usage.
Currently, My CPU usage is at about 50% on both cores with iTunes taking up 82% (I am streaming audio) and the Activity Monitor itself using 8%. All other processes are under 2%.
Does anyone have any advice? What should be normal CPU usage on Snow Leopard? Of course, that's a subjective question that depends on what applicatios you are running. I do not do any heavy graphics processing. My main applications are Safari, Word, Excel, Outlook, iChat, and iTunes. I am thinking of, once again, nuking this machine and rebuilding from scratch.
Any advice would be helpful. I'm pulling my hair out.

On a hunch, I ran ClamXAV from Safe Mode and found 8 emails with Trojans. While not critical, I moved them to the trash and emptied it. One of the 8 was in my Mail folder. The rest were in SPAM. I rebooted after that was complete and have been running better since the above screenshot was taken. I cannot imagine that a trojan was clicked on as it was probably an attachment unless someone I regularly email with accidentally sent me one since that's how they work.
There are no known Trojans spread through e-mail that affect the Mac and without knowing the infection name I can't really say, but suspect they were all Windows. Most Mac malware detected by ClamXav have "OSX" as part of the infection name.
It's never a good idea to move e-mail files around using the finder or any AV software. This will most certainly corrupt the mailbox index file which could result in the loss of additional e-mail. You should repair the damage by running "Rebuild" from the Mailbox menu of Mail on both your Inbox and Junk folders. It's also possible that you didn't delete the oriinal mail from your e-mail ISP's server and it will just be downloaded to your computer again the next time you check for mail. Depends several settins in Mail and on your ISP's server.
You should always use the "Reveal in Finder" option to locate the e-mail in the finder, then double-click it to open it in Mail, then use Mail's delete key (and empty the trash folder if you use it). There may be  one more step to permanently delete it if the e-mail is from a gmail account.

  • I have a Black Macbook 4,1, penryn 2.4GHz, snow leopard 10.6.7 with 8GB Ram

Yes 8GB Ram. It all goes great until it enters in screensaver or sleep mode (i can't detect) or else i try to run some virtual machines (it doesn't matter if it's virtualbox, fusion or paralles). The van start get all crazy like the computer it's about to lift off and them the operating system freezes. How i resolve this? I know that it's related to the RAM but i would like to know why. Why the system recognizes the RAM and boots and works with it and them "oh my god i have 8GB.No way.Let do something to freeze up! Hammer time! Can't touch this!"
Another note. A friend of mine who is a developer as Mac OS X Lion on a external disk and we boot my macbook with. So far so good, nothing to report, but i didn't try yet with virtual machines. I need some kind of tool or expertie to analize my problem can somebody help me?

My apologies for forgeting to tell this part of my experiences. It all started in Mac OS X Leopard with 2GB and this is the evolution until now:
    .Mac OS X Leopard - RAM:2GB
    .Mac OS X Leopard - RAM:4GB
    .Mac OS X Snow Leopard - RAM:4GB
    .Mac OS X Snow Leopard - RAM:6GB (4GB + 2GB)
so far, so good, with 1 hdd, with 2 hdd, with RAID0 stripe, with RAID0 stripe + USB boot, with RAID0 stripe + Firewire boot, you named i tried it. Them the ultimate upgrade:
.Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.5 - RAM:8GB (4GB + 4GB) After an undetermined time "Oh dam!!!Ups there it go!!"
    .Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 - RAM:8GB (4GB + 4GB) "Hummm!!!So far so good!!" - what changed?
    .Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7 - RAM:8GB (4GB + 4GB) "Hummm!!!So far so good!!...and ... little dam!!!" - what changed?
And them ladies and gentlemen the King of the Jungle:
.Mac OS X Lion Dev Prev 2 booting from firewire - RAM:8GB (4GB + 4GB) - life is good. What changed?
See, my point! I know something is fishy around here! I know that some configuration are theoretical not supported, but i want to find out why.
JoeyR says is the hardware, but wich piece? The graphics? And even so it's not the function os the bios/efi to allocate the memory to the hardware? Does the hardware has some limitation to access more memory than 6GB? Why is that? Isn't the bus of my computer a 64 bit like the CPU? Even if it is 32 bit the limit would be 4GB (2^32). How it can access 6GB and does complain?
Just to remenber i have a Macbook Black verson 4,1, CPU Penryn T8300 (Dual 2 Core) 2.4GHz with a GPU Intel X3100 (which *****!).
Now, with all that can somebody tell me of a tool or method that i can use to analize this stuff and find it out who provokes the crash/freeze/"oh dam!"?

  • Snow Leopard uses more RAM?

I just installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro and found that RAM usage is obviously a lot more than 10.5 when my system is not running any demanding programs at all. With only Mail, Safari and iTunes running, RAM usage is already more than half of my 3GB RAM, which is the maximum for my 2.33Ghz MacBook Pro. I've heard some people say that to use 10.6, you need at least 4GB RAM to make your system really meaningfully workable. Is that true? Is it really true that 10.6 itself uses more RAM than 10.5?

If you've got the ram, SL will use it. It's supposed to be that way. Reading files from a hard drive really can't keep the OS running as fast as the other hardware can provide. New program features don't work as well with limited ram.
I think that every new OS uses more ram than it's predecessor (same for Windows). Snow Leopard may take less hard drive space, but part of that is because code for PPC Macs has been removed.
Every time a program has to use a hard drive to store part of it's code it's running too slow. I look forward to new memory management techniques that will allow for immediate use of the computer, but still continue to load itself into all the ram it can use. Some of this is already happening, but it will get even better.
As the CPU's get faster, and the memory management systems become more powerful I expect to be able to use even more ram in the future. My 3 year old MBP also has a 3GB limit, but my iMac supports 8 GB of much faster ram. I don't expect to be doing the same type of work with my laptop which shipped with Tiger as I do with the iMac and will probably sell the older laptop in another year to offset part of the cost of the next killer MBP.
Typically I need the MBP to run Windows at a clients site, and XP with 1GB assigned in Parallels has been good enough. Soon I'll need to run Windows 7 on a regular basis, and it requires 3 or 4 times as much ram as XP to get the best performance, plus the IC2D processor can use an update with a couple more cores
Ram is still the cheapest way to help a computer perform at it's best, so when I can, I add all the ram a machine can use and expect changes in the OS and programs to eventually 'obsolete' my machines every 3 to 5 years. I say obsolete because I tend to voluntarily upgrade to the latest hardware and programs when the prices taper off a little.
We are only seeing the beginning of what Snow Leopard can do. The more powerful programs aren't really ready for SL's performance enhancements yet, but as they come online in the next year or so I think they'll take advantage of even more ram...
Meanwhile, there aren't any programs that really require SL and there are still a few that won't work well or at all. Leopard worked very well on my laptop.

  • Mac Pro seems to be missing 0.5 GB of ram after Snow Leopard install

I just installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro (2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon). The computer has only ever had the default 2 GB of RAM that comes with it from Apple. I know I need more, it's on order. The odd thing that I noticed after installing Snow Leopard is that the computer now only reports 1.5 GB or RAM in the "About This Mac" box. Specifically it says: "1.5 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM". Odd.
Second if I click "More Info..." below is what I see in the memory slots.
Does anyone know what might have caused this, or if its possible to get that 0.5 GB back?
Second I just ordered 8 GB of RAM (MACMEM 4Gx2|KST KTA-MP800K2/8G R). If the above issue doesn't get resolved what do you suggest I do when the new RAM arrives? Should I just add in the new stuff for a total of 9.5 GB, or should I also take out the existing RAM that's reporting odd values? I'm wondering if the missing 0.5 GB is a symptom of other issues, and maybe that RAM is "sick" and could slow things down somehow.
    Thanks for any ideas.
    Jesse

I am running a '07 Mac Pro that has had 7GB RAM since I bought it almost 3 years ago - the original 2x512MB + 6x1GB purchased from Crucial.com. Suddenly, after installing Snow Leopard, only 6GB are being recognized; two of the 1GB DIMM's now read as 512MB in System Profiler, and the Part Number and Serial Number listed for those modules are incorrect.
After searching these forums for ideas, I have tried:
    • Resetting the PRAM -- no change
    • Running Apple Hardware Test -- no problems found
    • Running TechTool Deluxe 3.1.3 (updated for Snow Leopard) -- no problems found
    • Running TechTool Pro 5.1.6 (updated for Snow Leopard) -- no problems found
    • Running system scanner (beta) from Crucial.com - cannot read installed RAM
The only thing I haven't tried is physically reinstalling the modules, but since the computer hasn't moved in months that seems pretty doubtful. If I make any progress I'll post again, otherwise, I'll be contacting Crucial for replacements.

  • Trying to update from 10.4.11 to snow leopard, the genius bar said I should be able to do this I only need 1 GB of RAM and I have 2 GB. I put in the SL disc and my Macbook pro spits it out. What do I do without needlessly spending more money to upgrade?

So this disc won't load. I recently bought a new ipod nano, but am unable to put songs on it without the latest version of itunes.
My Macbook Pro is 2008 and has 10.4.11 the guys at the genius bar said to upgrade to snow leopard to upgrade to lion and I shouldn't have a problem. I was told I need 1GB of RAM and I have 2GBs of RAM but the disc spits out every time after about 3 minutes.
This is my computer info, please please please help me install this disc so I can use this ipod I bought from you that I've been super psyched about using.

  • RAM issues with MacBook & Snow Leopard

Hey everybody. My mom bought Snow Leopard the other day and just went to install now, but her MacBook told her she needed more RAM. Is there any way we could clear some space up or something and not have to get a physical upgrade? Thanks.

RAM is the physical memory installed in the computer, not the space on the hard drive. Apparently the computer does not meet the minimum system requirements:
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
You will have to upgrade the computer's RAM. I recommend not less than 2 GBs for Snow Leopard.

  • Mac pro 4,1 2009 every OS but the Snow Leopard takes 6gb of RAM just on boot? Yosemite unusable

I have a 2009 Mac Pro quad 2.66 ghz with original 12gb of ram(an option at time of pruchace, but I also have different modules for 6gb from another machine of the same series, problem is not related to the RAM modules). I also have multiple hard drives and tried installing everything from Lion onwards to any of those (even having a single drive in the system), and the problem presists.
    The issue:
When I boot up Snow Leopard system takes around 1.5-2gb of ram and that is perfectly fine. Everything works great.
When I boot up Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, the system itself takes 6gb of RAM or more just too boot. This can't be right, how would any newer Mac even work with their 4gb.
I noticed that in Activity monitor system automatically opens a ton of apps that have no use on my system like WiFi(that I don't have). Seems like it automatically boots every single app that is part of the system, it takes it like 30 minutes to load all those useless features, and system is crawling then, works ok 30 minutes in but I have half my ram wasted.
How do I stop it from doing this? Everything is fine with Snow Leopard, but I am stuck in it, and I can't purchase a lot of apps that I would if I could actually use newer software?

    Problem description:
Yosemite takes up 4.5-6gb of ram just on boot compared to the 1.5-2 gb that Snow Leopard takes on the same system
    Mac pro 2009 4,1 quad.

Basically, 5GB of my RAM is gone just because I turned my computer on, and ok this is on HHD, but even then Snow Leopard is completely functional one minute after I push the power button, Yosemite takes that long too boot, too, but then it takes it another half hour to stop spinning the hard drvie for it's unused apps and actually let me load non-system apps and files and start working.
I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT! How do I stop the system from cache-ing recent files?

  • I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lighroom 5 if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?

I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lightroom 5 okay if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?  What will happen to the applications that aren't 64-bit compatible?  Also the Eye-one Display 2 colorimeter to calibrate the monitor will not run on Lion, so that will be an expensive upgrade to an i1DisplayPro. Is the upgrade important enough to offset the expense?  I have an Epson R2000 printer.  Will there be problems with the drivers if I upgrade to Lion?  It would be great to hear from other mac users who are also photographers and who print their own photos.

Before upgrading to Lion be sure to read this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
    Adobe lists these requirements:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html
Looking at http://www.everymac.com/ even the earliest 2008 iMac was fully 64 bit, even though Boot Camp doesn't support 64 bit Windows on that machine.

  • Running Snow Leopard with 1 gig of RAM

I'm very interested in upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard in the near future. However, I've seen a few people recommend a minimum of 2 gigs for installing SL (even though Apple only requires 1 gig). There are some testimonials that claim that 1 gig is fine for basic netbook work, but I regularly use the Adobe Creative Suite. It runs okay on Leopard (just takes a minute or two to get open), but I'm worried that more intensive functions will be totally unusable if I put SL on. This is seperate from the issues users have been reporting with CS4 on SL. I'm just curious if the upgrade will cause my valiant 1 gig to give up entirely and make CS4 and other apps too slow to use.

Here's the thing - your 1GB RAM is the bare minimum required by Snow Leopard. It will run; but how well it will run is another matter. Your MB has been running ok so far, but you have already admitted that things are slow. Snow Leopard by itself is not going to cure overall system performance issues.
The other thing you have to consider is the system HD. When it gets to about 50% full performance starts to degrade; this is a matter of simple physics. At about 80% full things usually start to get quirky. At 90% full you are getting close to crashing your system. This is because the operating system needs adequate space on the system HD to run, and among other things it uses that space to make up for any shortage of RAM; when it does that your system still runs but it runs more slowly because disk is not as fast as RAM.
Then there's the matter that your MB is an old model with a slow bus & RAM speed compared to today's models.
What can you do to improve overall performance? Add RAM. Upgrade the hard drive to a 7200rpm HD. Keep the HD under 50% full. Don't run multiple apps simultaneously if at all possible. Run a maintenance utility like MacOSXCocktail or Onyx from time to time. That will give you a noticeable jump in speed.

  • How can I find Lion to download it to my Mac Boook/  It is the white plastic model and is now running Snow Leopard.  It has 4 GB of Ram but this computer is not compatible with MOuntain Lion.  I cannot find Lion anywhere.

How can I find Lion to download it to my Mac Book?  It has Snow Leopard and 4GB RAM but it the white plastic model and is not compatible with Mountain Lion.  I have been told by the Genius Bar that it will handle Lion.

That underpowered model is better left on 10.6.8 for performance reasons, also the fact that it's dated and 10.7 will likely require you to buy alll new software to replace the PPC based software your currently using.
If you insist, then call Apple via phone and they will sell you 10.7 Lion and provide a link to download it.
My 2¢ is to save up for a new machine, as that one is about to kick the bucket, they only last about 4.5 years or so depending upon use/enviroment.
If your having problems with 10.6.8, perhaps some of the links here can assist, 10.6 is faster than 10.7 in fresh install tests.

  • 2 problems! - RAM module broken & Snow Leopard not loading

    Hi,
    I have 2 problems:
I got Mac Mini (late 2009 model, 2,26ghz, 2gb) upgraded from 2GB to 4GB from this Apple Premium Reseller (http://www.stormfront.co.uk/). When I got it back and switched it on and immediately got 3 beeps which indicated bad ram or logic board. The y took it back and said they sent it to their workshop in Exeter and fixed it. When I switched it on I still got 3 beeps. Took it back to the shop they said don't what to do and get the workshop to ring me back on Monday. At this point I'm fuming!!! So I decided to take apart the Mac MIni myself. Upon discovery that one of the memory modules is broken, I bent the bit metal back and it seems to ok after hardware tests and is working now. What can I do about this? I honestly did not break this and know it was the shop but how I van prove this? What would be done about a replacement as I have no longer sold, would I get a discount on brand new mac mini?
As mentioned above that I took it apart I cant load up Snow Leopard, I just get the Apple logo plus the spinning wheel I can hear some hard drive activity but does nothing ( I left it for 20 mins). I then booted from the SNow Leopard and ran disk verify it came up with errors and said to format and restore, which I have done via Time Machine. But I still get the Apple plus spinning wheel. I know the hard rive ok now because I can boot into Windows via bootcamp. So what I should do?
    Any help would be appreciated.

it seems that it's not emptying trash for you. only emptying trash will actually free up space on the drive. what exactly happens when you empty trash? does it seem to empty?
click on the trash in the dock. is there anything inside?
