Snow Leopard released this Friday (28th August)!!!

Ok, so it's finally here... who dares?! I'm tempted on my Macbook as I've got nothing to lose really, but I need to be sure that Logic 9 is still going to run as I do some mobile recording with it. I wonder if we'll also see a Logic 9.01 update to go with it? I'm very curious I must admit.
What will we need to be careful of? Interface drivers? 3rd party updates?

Facts from my test during beta:
1- Logic won't come out in 64bit as the audio drivers are not 64 bit yet, neither are any of the available plugins. So forget that until the vendors follow.
2- Logic 8 and 9 on Snow Leopard runs very very fast, much faster than now, a joy to use.
3- A few of the plugin vendors I tested didn't play well under Snow Leopard, it's not fair for me to say which right now because they may have a fix coming after the release of SL.
4- The thing to be careful and mindful of is well... everything. Install Snow on a new partition, have it transfer your settings over from the partition you have Leopard on, and then reboot. You'll have everything working in no time, and you'll find out very quickly if things are OK or not.
Like I said, some plugs don't work. I can confirm what I know works:
UAD2, Liquid Mix and Apogee Symphony drivers. FXPansion BFD2 and DCAM. DUY plugs (all of them). Waves SSL 4000. iZotope Ozone, Trash, Spectrum and RX. Melodyne 3.2.x plugin and App.
Your mileage may vary, don't run it on a production system yet. Period.

upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion from snow leopard does this mean i can upgrade my imac as well for the same price? And will it mess it up?

You can upgrade the iMac for no extra charge - sign into the App Store there, download and install 10.8.
I recommend that you make a backup (Time Machine is probably the easiest method) before you install, and make sure that you are not using any applications that are incomptible with 10.8 (eg Office 2004) - other than that, it should go smoothly.

I have downloaded 10.5.8 combo several times and cannot get it to install because the disc won't mount or the installation gets hung up after restart. My current os is 10.5.1, and I am trying to upgrade to snow leopard. This is on a dual core macbook pro.

You don't need to update to Leopard 10.5.8 unless you want to keep Leopard. Upgrading to Snow Leopard requires that your purchase the retail install disk.
The following covers Leopard:
Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Is installing software in Snow Leopard REALLY this problematic

I updated my 2007 Mac Pro to Snow Leopard earlier this week. After doing so I decided to install iLife 11, which proved to be entirely impossible despite trying an assortment of suggestions here in the support community as well as elsewhere. Every attempt at install came up with t=with the "install failed. Consult manufacturer". In years of installing a multitude of software to various MAc OSs I have never seen that error
So after much futility I took a brand new drive and installed Snow Leopard on it and made this my new boot drive and decided I would cleanly install my various software. I was then successful at installing iLife. However, everything else I try to install gives me that annoying failure message for no apparent reason. And I'm talking about standard and up to date stuff including APPLE'S own products like Final Cut Studio. It's a brand new drive. Brand new OS install. No plugins loaded yet . . . I have run all the Disk Utility options and all checks out. I've repaired permissions. I've tried installing under a new Administrator account and nothing works.
Is this common for Snow Leopard? I've never even remotely had these kind of problems before. And glancing around here it appears that install issues are pretty frequent in Snow Leopard. I'm at the point where I am considering by a new Mac Pro because I was contemplating such an upgrade anyway.
However, I am afraid that shelling out the 4+ grand isn't going to help because the problem isn't the machinery but the Snow Leopard OS itself.
So my question is, is there something I am missing or doing wrong? Can I rely on Snow Leopard? I have my old drives backed up and could theoretically simply go back to Leopard, and can do that though I would prefer not to. And what if I do get a new machine? I obviously can't buy one with the old OS.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

nlbford wrote:
It's a completely clean install etresoft - and sorry if I started us off on the wrong foot.
No problem. It is where you end up that is important.
I've been trying to get the machine to start up in teh diagnostic mode that Thomas suggested, but for some reason it will not boot in that mode off of that disk.
That's not good at all. If it won't even run hardware diagnostics, consider those diagnostics to have failed.
But my next step will be to do as you suggest and see what the install log says. Thanks.
That can't hurt, but I think you have some kind of hardware problem. Since you are probably out of warranty by now, let's try a little harder.
Since this machine was on 10.4 and now you are trying to install 10.6, you missed a little something called 10.5. During all that time, you may have missed one or more firmware updates too. A Snow Leopard installer may assume that all of those firmware updates have been applied. See if any of these updates look applicable to your system: http://support.apple.com/downloads/#macpro
The one that looks most interesting to me is the Hard Drive Update 1.0. Also, there are a number of Repair pages (lower right corner) for your machine that require a hardware serial number to search. Enter your serial number and see what comes up.

Also, you might want to post a new topic in the Mac Pro forum: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=194
Include a link to this topic so people can see what you are talking about. Maybe someone else who has the same machine might be more familiar with the issue.

• No iCloud on Snow Leopard? THIS IS A JOKE, APPLE!

Right now I'm thinking about leaving Apple products behind for good. So I can't use iCloud on Snow Leopard (which is not that old)? Meaning my syncing (contacts, bookmarks, calendars etc.) will just stop when they shut down MobileMe in 2012?
GREAT WAY TO DEAL WITH YOUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS, APPLE!
I can't update to Lion (various reasons). So now what? Dump the crap Macbook+iMac+iPhone in the toilet? Should be a great idea!
VERY PROFESSIONAL, CONGRATULATIONS!

Same here.
I own Lion. I uninstalled Lion. Because, I am suffering the problem of failing internet connection when waking from sleep - it's a very well discussed issue on these discussion forums. This means I am using a VERY expensive 27" iMac with Snow Leopard and no iCloud.
But you know the worst part?
My gaming machine is WINDOWS 7 64bit and it runs Apple's iCloud software install just fine ... go figure that one out! I can use iCloud on ANY Windows machine and NOT my 27" iMac ... regardless of whether people own Lion or not, if ANY Windows machine can use iCloud, I'm certain Snow Leopard users should as well. ANYWAY ...
PLEASE use this form, be polite, and request that they stop using iCloud to sell more copies of Lion (the only reason I can they are doing this) - and get them to release a Snow Leopard version:

Discussing it here makes us feel better, but won't get the engineers moving. USE THE FORM!

• How do I install snow leopard on a 2.1 ghz macbook with 10.5.8 Leopard installed?  I have a 10.6.2 unstall disk.  It says it can't install snow leopard on this computer.

How do I install Snow Leopard on my Macbook 2.1 ghz, with 10.5.8 Leopard installed?
I have the install disk for Snow Leopard 10.6.2, but when using it for installation, it
states that "Snow Leopard cannot be installed on this computer"!
I understand some features of iOS5 cannot be used unless my iMac and Macbook have
10.7 Lion installed.  Correct?

It sounds like your Snow Leopard install disk is the disk that came with another model of Mac (grey lable with no pictures). If so, that's not legal and won't work. You need a retail (white label with the picture of a snow leopard) copy of the installer for each system that didn't come with Snow Leopard.
Regards.

• Snow Leopard:  was this really necessary?  aka "multiple problems"

ok, upgraded to Snow Leopard and I can't see any improvements (apart from Quick Look but haven't tried its functions.
I have noticed several subtle inconveniences though... (see below)
This is a brand new MacBook Air and it was already very quick but I thought it would be nice to enjoy a better performance! Unfortunately everything seems to have slowed down a little. And the fans seem to come on almost instantly when watching youtube for example. Previously you had to be doing that for at least 7-8 minutes before the fans came on.
So:
- the machine overall is noticeably slower.
- starting and shutting down now takes at least twice the time it used to.
- my iDisk has gone crazy. It syncs constantly without actually syncing. This is now driving me crazy. Why oh why?
- some of the basic system preferences didn't "transfer" with the upgrade (safari home page, wallpaper, background colour of folders etc etc)
- Word and Excel are very sluggish and crash if I edit anything
- when starting up a file called "recovered items" appears in the trash ...?
- right clicking on the dock icons comes up with a windows-like transparency of options! how do I change this back to the standard silver one?
- my internet connection seems a bit slower but haven't got proof of it, it just the whole thing feels slower
In short, for the first time my Mac feels like a windows laptop... very disappointed.

HI,
Check to see how much free space there is on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.* Insufficient disk space can cause some of the problems you are describing.
*Recovered files in your Trash after restart.*
The recovered files are temporary files used by Mac OS X applications. *Usually temporary files are deleted by an application when it no longer needs them*. If an application quits unexpectedly, the temporary files may not be deleted by the application. When you restart your computer, Mac OS X moves these temporary files to the Trash.
*"right clicking on the dock icons comes up with a windows-like transparency of options! how do I change this back to the standard silver one?"*
Might have to reformat and reinsatll 10.5 to do that.
For iDisk. Open System Preferences/MobileMe, select the iDisk tab. At the bottom of that window turn iDisk sync OFF.
Users are reporting that after several restarts your internet speed will increase.
Free internet broadband speed test here.
http://www.speedtest.net/ Click where it says; Begin Test
Download should be about 15.30
Upload about 9.95.
For the fans, try resetting the SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
Hopefully this will help you out a bit and answered some questions... also, if you have any 3rd party (non Apple) application, you might need to update that software from the developers web site.
Repair disk permissions before and after any updates or upgrades.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

• Has Snow Leopard made this so good, I don't have to do it?

Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro 2.66 running the latest FCPro and Snowie. I also have "Menu Meters" up in the menu bar. I've noticed when editing in FCPro 7 (7.01) and I render scenes, sometimes menu Meters (both of them) show 75 - 90% of the processors are busy working . . . rendering!
GOOD! That's what their supposed to do. But sometimes, and I can't find the pattern here . . . I'll render something and the processors are only working at 30%. I'm wondering . . . 'why don't you 2 work a little harder so this'll render faster?!!" I do have monimal programs running in the background, MAIL, maybe Preview, QT - that's it. Nothing major to distract the rendering "bosses"!
I have not played with QMaster on the MacBook Pro as I read somewhere that with "only" 2 processors, it won't do anything with a MacBook Pro.
So I guess my question is . . . why does the rendering processes frequently change so much- using more or less of my processors? Can QMaster (if I know how to set it up, which I don't really) "order" the rendering machine to work 'harder' and faster? (At the downside of multitasking slower, which I don't care about, because I'm not doing it anyway.)
OR . . . is Snowie very intelligent about my FCPro program and does Snowie "intelligently" automatically control the processors to run at their max and I should do nothing? I wish this were right, but then why do menu meters show such varied performance?
Lastly, I have a Mac Pro Tower 8 core 2.8 gig also. I've tried playing with Qmaster on that one - it's menu meters show the same "varied" performance levels - but nothing I do with Qmaster predictable effects its "use" or "control" of rendering or compressing - it seems Snowie just seems to most of the time keep them at 60% or higher. (But I really don't know what I'm doing . . . so I might be setting QMaster all wrong! I seem to lay off it now)
Is Snow Leopard doing such a good job controlling performance, I should keep my hands "OFF" and just let everything run automatically? It seems sometimes in compressor, while compressing . . . it runs all 8 cores at 75% or so much of the time - but sometimes not!
Some of the articles I're read on QMaster are dated before Snowie, so can I rely on those stories? Or have things change now.
Thanks - I always learn a lot from these chat boards, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's wondered about this. (I hope!)
Thank you,
Larry

• Snow Leopard release purchase

We have a MacBook Pro that is running 10.5.8 (originally 10.5.2).  I ugraded the RAM and I want to upgrade it to Snow Leopard, 10.6 then to Mountain Lion, 10.8.  I can't get it to upgrade using the installer.  How to I get Snow Leopard disk so I can upgrade to Mountain Lion?  Retail is charging over $125 and this seems outrageous to upgrade an outdated Mac being used by a student employee.
Thank you, AnnetteR

Call Apple and buy it. See below:

• Does Snow Leopard support this MacBook? MC372 Mid 2010

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a refurbished Mac Book Pro.
MC372 Mid 2010
It has Osx 10.7 installed, I may need to install Snow Leopard on instead.
I have a 10.6.3 DVD, will it support this version Mac Book Pro with
an i5 processor?
Thanks
Mike

If you have a Mac Pro desktop system running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 you can Clone the Macintosh HD partition to an external drive and then Boot your mac notebook from that external and then Clone the internal drive of the notebook from that external.
The only thing I would do before starting this process is to run the 10.6.8 Combo update on the Mac Pro desktop system to make sure all the proper drivers are installed so it will run on the Mac notebook you have.
The Combo updater loads all drivers for all model Mac computers that version of OS X can run on. The Software Update version of the 10.6.8 update only loads/installs drivers for the specific Mac computer model it is being installed on.
You can download that Combo updater from the Apple Support Download website.

I have now ML and SL in dual boot and want to share users (on an external drive), and try out the new XCode.  I wonder, however, if I should rather use different users, so XC on SL won't have to deal with "corrupted" preferences that new XC might write to my users folder.  Also I thought it would be a good idea to switch off Spotlight and TimeMachine in ML for external harddrives, so they will still be readable from SL.  Anyone has some tips on how to use SL and ML with shared external drives?

• My school computer shows version 10.6.8 is this snow leopard, other students claim it is mountain lion

my school computer shows version 10.6.8 is this snow leopard, other students claim it is mountain lion

The students are incorrect, 10.6.8 was the last version of Snow Leopard released before v10.7 Lion. Mountain Lion starts at 10.8.
Hope that helps!
