Snow Leopard running slow graphics after reinstallation
Hey everyone,
I have a very strange question. I've been using my Snow Leopard without any problems for quite some time, but a few days ago I decided it was time for a clean install. I installed the Snow Leopard without any problem, used Software Update to update to the latest version, and than I started noticing some graphic problems:
1. Slow UI animations (i.e opening Applications Folder, Minimizing Using Gene Effect, etc.)
2. QuickTime slowness - low fps when I tried playing a movie
3. Adobe Flash problems - when I installed the latest version, Safari seemed to crash by the first sight of Flash on any site. I reinstalled since then and the pre-installed version seems to work
4. In Desktop and Screensaver Preferences I am missing the Translucent Menu Bar option
5. In System Profiler, under Display I have VRAM (Total): 32 MB
It somewhat reminds of the problem described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3479
Only that the resolution is to reinstall, which I did several times with the same DVD I had no problems with before, and nothing seemed to help.
Any ideas how to resolve those problems (well I think they are all related) are appreciated since it is rendering my Snow Leopard pretty much unusable.
Thanks in advance

Mac Pro (Snow Leopard) runs slow even after bootup disk is repaired
My Mac Pro running OS X 10.6.8 continues to run exremely slowly even after the bootup disk was repaired and verified. I did a second safe boot then a regular boot and now I cannot even start any of the applicatsion. E.g., I cannot start either Mail.app or Safari.
This ie s exremely upsetting and I would appreciate any help, advice, ... on what I should do to determine the problem.
VBI have had Time Machine backups and I used to have online backups as well until the provider changed terms on me which made it so much more expensive (but that is another story). I have >600 GB available on my1 TB startup drive and I do have quite of a bit of my media files on an additional 500 GB hard drive.
However, your mentioning power outages and dorps/dips reminded me that such is indeed a problem where we live. My MacPro is wlays on and when I woke up one morning the login window was on so it obviously had restarted. Then just before the Mac acted slower than molasses I do remember my UPS beeping but I admittedly sort of ignored it and forgot all about it since this kind of thing happens relatively frequently.
I just restarted the system now and everything seems back to normal again.
My question: my Mac Pro as well as my monitor are connected to a 350 VA/200 W UPS. What is the advantage of using a 1500 VA UPS?
Thanks. -
Anyone else's Snow Leopard running slower than version 10.5?
My hard drive crashed a few weeks ago and I decided to have the Apple Store upgrade my operating system to 10.6.3 and I have found that it's slower than the previous version. Also, Adobe InDesign doesn't print from the new version.
Is anyone having these problems?? This could make me revert back to a PCWell, yes, if it was a new HD and your old drive was dead, they would have had to do an install from scratch.
If the old drive was still running they would have done an upgrade & migrate unless you told them otherwise. Problem with migrating is often higher powered apps like CS3, Final Cut, Aperture, etc. don't run well if at all and you end up having to do an erase & install anyway.
What is the exact model iMac you have, and how much RAM? What HD did you buy?
CS3 is old at this point and my understanding is Adobe does not support it on Snow Leopard. Are you experiencing the slowness just with CS3 or with everything (say, Safari, Office, iTunes, etc?) -
Snow leopard runs slow.
i hate using it. i am not a gamer - so email, internet and occasionally work related - word, excel, etc. What can i do?
Snow Leopard is the fastest OS X version still supported.
It's faster than 10.5, 10.7 or 10.8.
So that means there is a problem with your machine.
Emergency backup procedure
Drag and drop copy your users file folders (music, pictures, documents etc) to a regular external powered drive as soon as possible.
Do not use, setup or trust only TimeMachine at this time. Unmount and Disconnect all external drives once the backup process is completed.
If you have any over 4GB sized files, those won't copy to a standard formatted FAT32/MSDOS drive from the factory, if you need to save these 4GB+ files use another blank/empty drive and use Disk Utility to format it Option GUID format OS X Extended Journaled (or the standard default one for Mac's).
Mac's cannot copy to a NTFS formatted drive.
I suggest you run through these user tips to identify the possible causes.
Why is my computer slow?
And exhaust all your possible fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then perhaps consider a defrag.
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
Or install a new boot drive in your machine with more RAM
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
If this is too much for you, there are local PC/Mac techs that can perform the work for you and speed up your machine once again. -
Snow Leopard running slow, freezing, not responding.
I am running Snow Leopard on Mac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB SDRAM.
Over the last few days the machine has gradually become slower and slower, the spinning wheel frequently appears and programs are not responding and the system freezes.
When I restart, on a couple of occasions a white screen with grey pixel blocks has flashed up during start up, other times it has frozen on the blue screen.
I have tried running Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, ClamXav, Onyx and disconnected all hardware, then finally I have reinstalled Snow Leopard but still seem to be having the same problems.
By the way, I am also running VMware Fusion, don't know if this is relevant.
Any suggestion, please?

Snow Leopard running slow on my macbook!
I looked up in console and found a TON of throttling on 3rd party apps that weren't completely uninstalled. So I took the rest of those out. I noticed a good speed up on my mac. But now I see this com.apple.launchd.peruser.501 com.apple.pbs throttling! What is this! that is all the console shows.

Please help!
ThanksI would be wary uninstalling or disabling the com.apple.pbs launch agent at /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.pbs.plist. I'm not aware of exactly what this utility does, but it appears to be necessary for Cocoa Applications.

Snow Leopard is slow on my mac mini
I think snow leopard is slower than leopard on my mac mini. What is the matter?
(excuse me for my english)I'm finding the same effect on my Mac Mini (just a few months old).
My Mac Book Pro is actually noticeable faster with Snow Leopard, but the Mac Mini is 10 times slower than it was with Leopard - barely usable at all.
My Mac Mini is 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1GB Ram.
I've checked the activity monitor and othing seems to be hogging the CPU or using up the RAM. I did try to boot into 64 bit kernel, but it didn't seem to work (once I unlocked the firmware).
... Fixed! ...
Now my Mac Mini works blindingly fast again. Not sure how I fixed it, but could be a combination of removing all GPG traces, stopping EyeTV helper from starting up and trying many times to boot into 64 bit kernel (but never succeeded).
(Also removed GeekTool and Secrets preference panes).
Also, since the firmware was unlocked I got a Mac Mini Firmware update (to 1.2), so maybe that helped. -
Laptop runs slow until after suspend/resume
Ever since the update kernel 3.4 my laptop runs slow until after a suspend/resume.
It seems something has gone wrong with the power management settings from powerup, that then get corrected through the suspend/resume cycle.
Its now getting rather anoying having to suspend my machine after boot, just to be able to use it.
Does any know what the problem might be or what information I should look at to help identify it.
Here is some info on my machine:
HP Compaq 6715b, AMD Turion64 X2, ATI RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series] (Actually X1300)
Linux tigger 3.4.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jul 16 21:35:54 CEST 2012 x86_64 GNU/LinuxPerhaps you need to disable autosuspend for the USB hub too. Try
echo -1 >/sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend
for i in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/autosuspend; do echo -1 > $i; done
and see if that fixes the problem. -
Will snow leopard run on G5 PPC?
Hi Just wondered,
will snow leopard run on G5 PPC? as I'm still on Tiger.
Regards
J.No - Leopard is the end of the line as of now (and probably forever) for PPC
As announced Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor - http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html

Snow Leopard Running Extremely Slow
Hello,
Recently installed Snow Leopard and everything has been running slow from web pages loading to editing and rendering in FCP.
I had no speed issues with Tiger.
I have verified disk permissions and repaired, and everything is still running slow.
Plenty of space left on hard drive.
Please help.

Script Editor in Snow Leopard painfully slow after adding apps to Library
I have four different Macs that I use from time to time, and on each of them I notice a constant: adding more items to AppleScript Editor's Library window slows performance of mundane operations (opening a dictionary, switching between Library window and editor window, scrolling in the Library window, etc).
In Leopard, I noticed little to know latency in opening a dictionary in Script Editor, but Snow Leopard's AppleScript Editor kills my productivity by making me wait on it with most UI interactions with the Library window.Hello
I read another post of yours:
Topic : Issue with applescript and installer scripts
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2143147
It seems that the installer is calling osascript which is run in 64-bit mode under OSX 10.6 whereas XSLT Tools.osax invoked in the script is in 32-bit mode only.
Until the osax becomes 64-bit capable, you may try setting /usr/bin/osascript to run in 32-bit mode. Perhaps by setting an option in Get Info window in Finder as explained in the AppleScript Release Notes listed earlier. (?)
I'm not sure but if Finder cannot do it for commands, you'd need to replace 'osascript' with 'arch -i386 osascript' in the installer script (if it's editable) or let /usr/bin/osascript be wrapped via arch(1) so that it is run in 32-bit mode.

Snow Leopard running very slow
I am running Snow Leopard and my MacBook is running much slower now then when I first installed Snow Leopard. It was very fast, now very slow. Apps are slow to respond or the don't respond at all. I have repaired permissions which helped very little and only temporary.
I have 4GB DDR2 ram. PDF files are now extremely slow to open in Preview and Safari is very laggy. I am using Firefox now as it runs fast. I tried Adobe Reader but that was just as bad and hogged CPU and memory. I completely uninstalled and removed Adobe from my MacBook.
I know a few others with Mac's with the same problem of a very slow Mac. Some have MacBook Pro's or Imac's 1 friend is using a Mac Pro and has noticed the how slow and laggy Snow Leopard has become.
I have scanned for viruses and found none.See:

After update to snow leopard macbook slow
Hey!
I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and since then my white macbook has slowed down. Especially safari is a mess. Takes ages to load, does weird things to fonts and it´s hard to reload websites. But other programmes have a similar issue, be it Pages or Word, i cannot type without problems. Most of the time I am tyoing already and seconds later I see letters on my screen. Everything seems to freeze constantly. I tried disk check, seems to be all working.
any ideas?
thanksRepair permissions and restart your computer.

Snow Leopard runs super slow on early 2006 (Intel) iMac
Hi. I need some advice please. I have an early 2006 iMac 20" that was running slow and I wanted to upgrade OS and main applications so I bought the SL box set. I backed up my data on a USB HDD and did a clean install, but now the system runs incredibly slowly. Genius at the Apple store ran diagnostics all day and found no problems with the HW and recommended I added another 1GB of RAM to existing 1GB. I did and system is still incredibly slow. I get the beach ball all the time and sometimes the system is completely unresponsive. Anyone else have performance issues with SL on this model iMac?

Snow Leopard - very slow restart / reboot and Boot Camp restart fail
Hi
After Snow Leopard installation on my Macbook Pro I have a very slow restart. I logged this immediately after install and waited till 10.6.1 was issued and installed but still have the same problems. Hope some one can help.
For an normal restart or reboot I have the grey screen for about 25 secs and then the blue screen hangs for about 2 mins 30 secs before loading desktop. This is longer than Leopard and clearly not what Snow Leopard is meant to be. I have installed on an iMac as well and can see the new normal fast boot.
I also have Windows on it's own partition and use in Boot Camp. I have used this successfully under Leopard.
When I restart from Windows using the Start button and restart, Windows shuts down and then the mac starts up but gets stuck indefinitely on the blue screen. I have waited up to 25 mins then forced a shut down.
However if I restart from Windows using the Boot Camp icon in the taskbar and choose the restart from MacOSX it shuts down windows and restarts the mac in record time!! about 25 secs grey screen and 25 secs blue screen. I can't get this in normal mac mode! - Bizarre.
I have run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, run Tech Tool, Onyx, reset PRAM, deleted startup items plists and removed startup items from System Preferences Account.
I have monitored the Console app for all the startup conditions noted above and will post below. In the logs of the normal mac reboot you can see something to do with Security Agent taking over 2 mins to load. Maybe that is a clue, but I don't understand these messages. Please note that the iStatsmenu app was installed after snow leopard and I had these slow startups before it's installation.
If anyone technical can understand what the **** is going on here I would really appreciate your feedback.
Regards
Eric

Thanks for your contributions. I have made little progress on this issue since posting.
Just as added info, I did a re-install of Snow leopard from install DVD and upgrade again to 10.6.1 and no change to the startup behaviours. Same pattern as before, although the first restart was fast and probably how it is meant to be, then the slow ones reappeared.
I also had a thought that somehow it may be related to the nominated startup disk. There were posts on other boards about similar issues with Leopard where the hanging start was found to be related to the computer not knowing which startup disk to use. I thought maybe as it works when using the boot camp icon from Windows but not the restart button, it may be related, but in OSX and Windows both are set to startup in OSX on HD. So no further joy.
Maybe someone else will come along who can understand the Console logs. Why does the loginwindow and Security Agent take so long?
Do you guys have any clues from your Console system logs? Does yours hang on loginwindow?
The fact that there are so few people with the same problem suggests to me that there is a third party device/preference/ hidden file somewhere that is having an effect and it's not an Apple issue.
I am getting close to wiping the hard drive and starting again....but live in hope.
Cheers
