Snow Leopard Server Server Admin Share Problems

Hi,
I am running Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8 and created a few shared folders off a secondary hard drive that I have in a MacMini. Now I want to delete those shares and have been unable to. Any suggestions would be helpful. I've included a screenshot of my situation.
Thanks,
David

Hi,
I want to delete that SharePoint folder as well as all the subfolders. Your right, I could not do it from that interface. I had to open up the that specific drive, and once I was in there, I was able to delete the SharePoint and subfolders. It seems that you can create folders from interface, just not delete them.

Can the Snow Leopard X Server be installed on a iMac, and then a user use the same iMac for their own use without using any of the server os. Also, will a MacBook Pro connect and work to the network.
I ahve a small company and want to connect a MacBook Pro and use an iMac as a pc and also as a server to gain the benefits of push e-mail, calendar, etc.

I really wanted to use the server for sharing files
As mentioned, unless you're going to have more than 10 people connecting to the machine at one time, you don't need the server... normal Mac OS X is basically a pretty powerful server, just not as full-featured one as Mac OS X Server. File sharing is pretty easy.

Not sure what you mean there.
    push e-mail
Unless this is in-house e-mail only, you are potentially getting into a major can of worms and a lot of complexity trying to supply your own e-mail server. You'll have to ensure that your server has a static IP address (which costs money) and can be accessed from outside your local intranet (which may require changing your networking hardware), and you'll have to make sure it's always running (which may require buying monitoring software and hiring someone to be on-call to come fix the server any time it has a problem). You'd be better off getting e-mail accounts with your ISP. For example, my wife's small business has a web hosting account that comes with up to 400 (IIRC) e-mail addresses, all for $10/month.
    calendar functionality.
What type of calendar functionality? What specific functionality do you need?

  • Snow Leopard cannot see winXP shares

Ever since I switched to Snow Leopard all my winXP shares have become inaccessible. I can still see the shared PCs on Finder, but when I try to connect to any of them I get a login prompt. This wasn't happening before. Moreover, even though I'm supplying correct credentials, the connection still fails.

    HI,
    Try repairing disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Snow Leopard iCal Server

I am a long time Now Up to Date user (with the contact/event server). If you know anything about NUDC you know that the word "unfortunately" will begin any further discussion. "Unfortunately" the upgrade Now X has been in "development" for nearly 3 years and it was released (badly I guess) in the Fall without a server. They will not give us a date on when that server may release and early reviews are not good for the standalone. It doesn't look very hopeful.
I am running three G5s right now with 2 Leopard Server and 1 tiger. I am considering giving up on Now, buying one Intel with Snow-L on it and using iCal and buying iPhones instead of Palm Centros -- hopefully when they port to Verizon b/c I'm no fan of ATT.
However, I really need to have some questions answered before I make that big a move -- about basic things like how it operates. I did a test run on Kerio and Entourage and was horribly disappointed. We need to share calendars across seven providers and four office staff and need to be able to modify each other's calendars EASILY. We can do that with NUDC but it gets more unreliable with every upgrade of the operating system and the Centros are obsolete. I would really love to hear from some people who are in daily use of iCal server. Maybe it's easier then to go to back channel and not use up the discussion board for what amounts to me asking for a sales pitch.
    Any takers?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi. No, no back-channel anything, please. You've come here asking for help, and so the discussion should STAY here
That way, everyone can contribute and potentially BENEFIT
Should you want dedicated support, then that's something that comes with a fee...
    http://consultants.apple.com/
    That said,
I have implemented shared calendaring for a client using Snow Leopard Server.
What testing have you done so far and what are your specific questions ?
You can either create a "user" (eg: Company_Calendar) and have end-users setup iCal to use that calendar, but that can get a bit messy, OR
have one such calendar (as just described) for certain purposes, and otherwise setup a calendar for each user.
Where it gets a bit tricky is that you have to use each end-users iCal to setup delegation (read and/or write access for other users). It's readily doable via a user's iCal, but I'm currently looking into managing this server-side - see (via the Terminal):
    man calendarservermanageprincipals
I think, compared to NUTDC , you should find this remarkably stable and reliable by comparison.
But you do have to allow for the fact that you're migrating to something entirely new for you,
and your ability to maintain, troubleshoot and resolve problems should they arise.
For client software, Entourage is not an option that I know of. See Apple's documentation for SL Server - iCal Server Admin:
    "Third-Party Applications
...the following third-party applications can use iCal service. These applications are from companies or projects that have committed to using CalDAV as an open calendaring service. This list does not indicate an endorsement or support for any of the products listed.
Mozilla Sunbird and Lightning (open source)
Open Software Application Foundation Chandler (open source)
Microsoft Outlook using the open source Outlook Connector Project
    Mulberry (open source)
GNOME Evolution using the CalDAV plugin (open source)
    Zidone (commercial plugin)
    EMClient (Windows only commercial plugin)"
and of course, test extensively to ensure the software (server & client) will meet your needs.

  • After upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard, mail server does not receive incoming email

After upgrading my server last night [2011.07.20] from Snow Leopard to Lion, my mail server settings went belly up.  After toying around with the server, its certificates and what-not, I was able to get it running, but it is no longer receiving any emails [neither internally nor from Gmail, Yahoo, etc.].
I can send emails via SMTP just fine [using SSL] to external email accounts [and it doesn't complain when I address an email to an internal email account, but I can't verify that it's sending it to the internal email account because it won't receive!].
The Connection Doctor says that it is indeed connecting properly to the server [incoming = IMAP, outgoing = SMTP], so there is communication between Mail 5.0 [and also Thunderbird as well] and the mail server.  The problem appears to be the mail server not receiving any emails - from internal or external addresses.
Anyone else having this problem or know of a fix for it?
    Thanks!

Did you find a solution to this issue?  My mail server is doing the same thing.  I've tried six migrations now, and have a couple of tickets open, but they all have issues.  I have worked around all of them except the mail server problem.
I did some more digging; the problem appears to be that on a migrated server, it leaves all of your mail store in the old location, doesn't move it, and then doesn't appear to upgrade spam-assassin properly.  The net effect is that the mail server gets the SMTP communication, tries to pass the message into spam assassin, and then it goes south.
I see errors like this littered in the logs:
Jul 31 13:53:10 mail org.amavis.amavisd[5927]: bayes: cannot open bayes databases /var/amavis/.spamassassin/bayes_* R/O: tie failed:

  • Replace Snow Leopard Server OS on Mini Server with Snow Leopard non-Server?

I have a Mid-2010 Mini Server which came preinstalled with Snow Leopard Server. I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with attempting to replace the OS-X Server software with OS-X non-Server in order to run Parallels for the Desktop. If this worked, then one should be able to re-install the OS-X Server software as a client using Parallels. Parallels states that it supports OS-X Server as a client, but the real question is whether one can install the OS-X (non-server) on a Mini which came with the OS-X Server software installed.

    Hi
Your problem is going to be finding a Client OS that will actually boot and install on the MacMini:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
According to MacTracker the build version of OSX Server 10.6.3 shipping with the MacMini Servers is 10D2235. It may work if you have a comparable client that's fully updated to 10.6.4. One way of finding out is to target disk mode an appropriately updated mac to the MacMini Server. If you can, select the System on that unit as the Startup Disk and see if it boots and works successfully with no kernel panics.

  • Facetime error using OS 10.6.8 (snow leopard) "the server encountered an error processing registration"

I can't seem to manage to get logged into facetime on my MacBook Pro using OS 10.6.8, Snow Leopard. It keeps giving me the error of "the server encountered an error processing registration, please try again later" Well two days later its the same issue, can someone please help!! I see a lot of the fixes on here are for the upgraded operating system, and everyone seems to have had snow leopard work fine...why cant I!!! help the old school op system user PLEASE!! :-)

I've been trying to get an answer to this problem for MONTHS.  I upgraded both my iMac and my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion, and ever since, FaceTime and iMessage stopped working.  I got the "Server encountered an error . . ." So, I called Apple "support" and they claimed they haven't heard of this issue.  I said I find it hard to believe since it's apparently a huge problem for tons of users and is all over the Apple forums.  After spending an hour on the phone with "support", they said they had to pass i on to a senior engineer and they'd call me back within 2 days with an answer.  After waiting a week, I decided to go to the place where I should have gone before, the place where all questions can be answered, even those too advanced for Apple, that place . . . YouTube.
Fixing the time issue didn't work for me, nor did any other solution that has been posted on the boards.  Yet after watching a 1:24 video on YouTube, both FaceTime and iMessage now work for me.
Here's the solution which WILL work.
You do need to first make sure your date/time settings are correct and set to adjust automatically.  But doing just this step will not fix the problem.
Open Finder, click on "Go" at the top menu, then select "Go To Folder"
Type in    /etc     and hit enter
You'll see a file called "hosts".  Drag that file to your desktop.
Right click on that file and open with Text Edit
Select all the text in that file, delete it and replace it with the text below, exactly as it is below.  Then save the new hosts file (just exiting will save it). And then drag that new hosts file back into the /etc folder to replace the old one.  After that, your FaceTime and iMessage will work, no thanks to Apple.

  • IMAP emails disappearing from Snow Leopard Mail Server

I run IT for a publishing company with about 75 IMAP accounts on my 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Server running mail services. I received a call two days ago from a user claiming that his 7000 mails have vanished from his mail application. When I checked his account through webmail all his emails were gone yet none were in the deleted mail mailbox. Being daring I went into my backups and copied all of the that user's email for the following location from the server backup /private/var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail. Once I put the mail back everything seemed great but shortly after the emails began disappearing again. At a rate of about 100 every few minutes. Not much later all 7000 emails were gone again. I repeated this procedure several times with the same result. I since have had him access as a POP account so that as a temporary fix the email would reside on his Mac and not vanish. But I still can't figure out why this is happening. Any ideas or thoughts would be extremely appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tom Beausoleil

  • Snow Leopard-Exchange Server 2003-Entourage 2008 (12.2.1)

+I have one final question before I upgrade to Snow Leopard.+
I currently run a 2.8 GHz Mac Pro, Leopard 10.5.8, Entourage 2008 (12.2.1) using Exchange server 2003. Everything is happy and works well.
I understand that I won't be able to use the new Snow Leopard built-in Exchange Server support.
*But, if I upgrade to Snow Leopard...will everything stay happy with what I've been running?*

There are connectivity issues between Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange accounts in Entourage 2008 running on Snow Leopard. These connectivity issues are also evident via web-based email (Safari & FireFox) on Snow Leopard and Exchange Serve 2003.
You will eventually loose connection to Exchange Server 2003. Restarting your computer will solve the problem temporarily.
POP accounts appear to work fine in this environment.

  • Can you Netboot Client 10.6.6 Snow Leopard to Server 10.4.11 tiger???

I have gathered an image of Snow leopard using SIU 10.4 with no problems. I have also created a new install image and new boot image with the gathered snow leopard dmg, but I am unable to netboot to the tiger server from snow leopard. I was wondering if this was possible?

You can host a 10.6.x image from a 10.4 server, but you will not be able to create a valid 10.6 image using the 10.4 tools.

  • Tiger clients having difficulties accessing Snow Leopard update server

Greetings! I have about 500 Macs in my network, running Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard. I just installed a transparent Snow Leopard (Mac mini, 10.6.7) software update server. The update server sits within my network, with my internal DNS server directing all requests to it. The update server uses an external DNS server, so it is able to access the Apple server without any issues and download the updates. Leopard and Snow Leopard clients are able to access it with no issues and download updates.
My Tiger clients, however, are not. When a Tiger client tries to access the update server through Software Update, it displays the message "A networking error has occurred: Error NSURLErrorDomain - 1100 (-1100). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again." I tested this on about a half dozen Macs on different VLANs, including one set up on the same VLAN as the server. Several things: 1) the Tiger clients CAN access the network, network resources, and browse to the software update server's index.sucatalog file using a browser; and 2) the update server has no log entry indicating a connection was attempted by the Tiger client. (It does, however, show plenty of activity by Leopard and Snow Leopard clients.)
If I enter the following command on one of my Tiger clients, it CAN access the update server:
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://swscan.apple.com:8088/index.sucatalog"
And the update server posts a log entry acknowledging the access. However, I get a message on the client that the software is up to date. The software is not. I tried to update a PowerPC G4 with a fresh installation of 10.4, and I KNOW it needs updating! I copied and enabled all update packages to my server, and I have seen the necessary updates in the list. My clients are unmanaged.
So, after a morning of testing, trial, error, and digging around log files, I've concluded the following:
    1. My software update server is not automatically redirecting Tiger clients appropriately (the network error message)
    2. The server's index.sucatalog either does not contain the updates list for Tiger clients, or the Tiger clients are not processing it correctly.
So, my questions are, what do I need to do on my server to redirect the Tiger clients appropriately (because it totally defeats the whole purpose of networking to touch every client and change the software updates .plist file), and what file do Tiger clients need to be directed to to get the appropriate updates list? I've looked at the swupd.conf file; it does not have a redirect for Tiger clients, so I added one (directing it to index.sucatalog), but it did not make any difference.
At this point, I am perplexed. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have read the Mac OS X Server System Imaging & Software Update Administration Version 10.6 Snow Leopard manual, and it was not helpful. I've also searched extensively on Google and found little helpful information.
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Searching on the net brought me to the same solution that Mr. Hoffman found as well, I was a bit skeptical at first but since he recommended it, and all my other attempts failed, it was a last resort and I have some additional notes of my own for a successful solution. Read the two links below first before doing anything, as they contribute to the solution in tandem.
