Snow Leopard Sever versus SBS 2011
Just started evaluating SBS 2011. I have been setting up SBS servers since SBS 2000 and have many many years using this however licensing has always bugged me with SBS server and in 2011 the story is no different. It is an 'if, and + but' licensing scheme as I like to refer to it and I have seen instances where volume license professionals and SBS consultants have got this wrong. In a recent case i was proved to be correct in my licensing setup at a client site and the license audit proved wrong - thats how confusing it is. However my clients heads where left spinning with it all and the hours it took to a lot of hours to resolve.
Compared to the Mac Server license model then you would wonder why people tolerate this at all. What does SBS Server have over Snow Leopard Server other than Exchange and how does Mail services in Snow Leopard compare?

"Other than Exchange" is huge. Not that I'm a huge fan of Exchange (it has it's own issues - no software is perfect), but especially with the Mac having a full Outlook client, having in-house Exchange can be VERY nice. Exchange 2010 Outlook Web Access (OWA) is also increadibly nice and feature rich. You almost don't even need Outlook anymore. Indeed, the typical non-power user would probably be just as happy with OWA as full Outlook. The only other system with as feature rich webmail would be Lotus Domino (and if you want to debate Lotus Note/Domino I will be more than happy to - not in this thread tho).
Here's why I continue to deploy SBS - and now, especially SBS 2011, to the non-profits I support. First of all, it's cheap for non-profits. Microsoft has a very gracious charity licensing program. Second, SBS "just works". I often wonder how the SBS division in Microsoft survives since they actually seem to be customer focused They know who their customers are and their product is targeted squarely at that market. I have been using SBS since the SBS 2000 days, and the progress the product has made over the last decade is simply astonishing.
Once you get past the initial server install and the hour and a half of updates and reboots (typical Microsoft product!) you have an almost 90% functioning and integrated Windows network with a full directory, feature rich email, powerful group calendaring, full remote access for email, collaboration, files and remote access to your office computers, collaboration through sharepoint, file sharing, bare-metal restore capable incremental backup - the list goes on. The amount of stuff packed into SBS is truely astonishing.
Client machines are joined automatically. Powerful functionality such as folder re-direction and syncronization of local files are a few mouse clicks away. Health montioring and patching of the network is fully integrated into the managmenet console and "so easy a caveman could do it". With a few more clicks SBS will email you status and error reports - great for admins like me who are part time and on demand.
And the new remote access features of SBS-2011 are really, really nice. Heck, I can even remote into my SBS server from my Mac now!
Yes, with Mac OSX Server I could probalby get similar services and I would have to give up a few things like automatic remote access to the client machines, but there would be allot more manual integration and at the end of the day SBS still offers more. And the hardware - the server I built for $2K would have been double that and still lacked features like redundant power This is the most dissapointing thing about Apple's recent moves with the discontinuation of their server hardware.
So it comes down to what is important for you. If you have Windows based applications, SBS can be a no-brainer. Especially if you have anything that relies on SQL server. If your a typical office with light email, light useage of a calendar and basic file sharing then Mac OSX server can also be a viable solution. It won't be as tightly integrated and you will have to figure more stuff out, but it is cheaper - especially if you aren't a non-profit. Yes, Microsoft's licensing can be confusing, but if you have a good reseller that understands small business - especially ones like Software House or Software One.
Having said that, I'm still going to work with a friend who owns a small business to upgrade his SBS 2003 box to 2011. He has a critical business application that runs on SQL server so he's stuck there, and other applications like QuickBooks only work with Windows servers. That and they are heavy, heavy users of email and group calendaring. As much as I like Mail and iCal, even with some of the third party add-ons to iCal it just can't stand up to what you get in true enterprise-class systems.
And finally, if I get into trouble, or if I get hit by a bus and the organizations I support need help, they are far more likely to find folks who understand Microsoft than Mac OSX server. Unfortunatly, that is a critical factor for many organizations.
I don't think it has to stay this way forever, but for right now MS has a better solution for small businesses.
SBS Essentials is also an interesting product. If you have a smattering of Windows desktops and need basic file sharing, Essentials is a really great deal. Biggest reason: Essentials can do incremental backups of all your workstations and it has built-in data-deduplication so you don't get 25 copies of the OS, applications, redundant data files, etc. Before essentials, I installed Windows Home Server to backup up to 10 machines - I have 10 workstations backed up in less than 150GB because of the data-deduplication functionality. This is enabled by NTFS shadow copy service - Apple really needs some sort of block level snapshot capability in their file system. It would enhance TimeMachine and make stuff like this trivial.
Anyway, those are a few of my thoughts after supporting several home and small business networks - often of mixes with Mac's and Windows boxes.

Hello! So here are the specs.
I have an Early 2011 MacBook Pro, which came with OSX 10.6.6 by default.
I've lost my installer disk so I though I'd buy a retail one from the online Apple Store, and version 10.6.3 is what they sent me.
Simply running the install OSX app won't work, I get a msg saying:
-- You can't use this version of the application "Install Mac OS X" with this version of OS X. You have "Install Mac OS X" 23.1.1. --
So, I've tried booting from the new disk hoping to erase my current drive and install Snow Leopard, but no can do, I get 3 beeps and have to force shutdown (not RAM related, see below). Laptop works fine when I spare it this maneuver.
After some research I understand 2 things:
1. Only the original installer disk will let me restore factory settings (and I don't have it).
2. I can only install the default OSX (10.6.6) or a later version (that 10.6.3 DVD may not have the correct drivers for my system).
Are these conclusions right? If so, would the Apple Store replace my disk for an updated 10.6.6. one? If not, then what are my options?
Thank you!

Re-Installing Snow Leopard on a mid 2011 iMac
I have accidentally wiped the hard drive of a mid 2011 imac 27" there was no install DVD provided for this machine and a retail Snow Leopard disk will not boot, apparently I need 10.6.8 and the retail disk is only 10.6.3 is there any solution to this dilemma?
The machines (we have more then one) all came with SL but no install disks. When I boot with cmd-R it comes up with a globe icon and message - apple.com/support - 6002F. I am now convinced that these machines were so close to the Lion release and were probably intended for Lion but were shipped with SL. I have now tried everthing including Lion install from USB recovery stick created an another SL to Lion machine and this works to the point where after downloading all 3GB of Lion it just goes back to the beginning again! I tried 3 times - good thing we have fast broadband and it failed every time! I then tried restoring a SL and even a Lion clone from another similar Mac but kernel panic every time, tomorrow I will try the retail "Lion on USB" option but it looks like its off for repair as far as this MAC is concerned.

Snow leopard server on imac 2011
Hello,
today (January, 15th, 2012) i purchased a new iMac in Germany equiped with Lion.
My intention is to build a server with Snow Leopard. Installation of SL fails and a black screen with some debug lines appears. My dealer told me that all iMacs shipped with lion are not qualified to have SL installed.
Is that possible??? Or is there a workarround?
Best regards

Thanks for your answer.
But who can tell me which iMacs are able to run SL Server?
Is there a database with serial numbers, from which number iMacs are not able to run SL Server?
Mid 2011 iMacs that come with Snow Leopard can. You can find refurbished ones in the Apple online refurbished store. And no, no such database exists. -
Can i install OS X Snow Leopard on my Early 2011 MacBook Pro 13' ?
Hi guys , just wondering can i install on my Early 2011 MacBook Pro 13'' OS X Snow Leopard ? i dont like Lion at all . Many Thanks .
You may be able to install SL 10.6.8 (assuming there was no firmware update) if you follow these directions. Check with MacTracker http://mactracker.ca/ and download their free app detailing more info you ever thought you needed to know about Apple products.
- you can re partition partition the mac drive so that you can retain the pre-installed lion install
- or use an external drive
- attach your computer via firewire 800 to a Mac computer (capable of running 10.6.8 )
- boot the your computer holding down the T key to get it into target disk mode, it will appear on desktop as an external drive.
- install SLS v 10.6.3 Retail version from the DVD onto the new partition or external drive where you want Sl installed.
- install the 10.6.8 combo update.

Lion to Snow Leopard MBP 13 Early 2011
GDay guys,
ive bought an used mbp 13 early 2011 and on the recovery hdd is only osx 10.7.5 but ive seen on the apple site that the mbp 13 early 2011 was deliveried with osx 10.6.
is it possible to downgrade or reinstall to snow leopard?
can i download snow leopard anywhere for free or do i have to buy it?Depends on what version of Snow Leopard came with the computer. Snow Leopard is only available as 10.6.3 on the retail discs. Newer models cannot boot from that version. You would need the original discs which you can purchase from Apple Customer Service.

There is no "downgrading." You will have to erase the drive and install Snow Leopard from scratch or create a separate, new partition on the drive on which to install Snow Leopard. -
Today, was prompted to install new security update. Did so. Now when click on + to open new tab the words New Tab appear in the tab. But, no dialog boxes appear to type in wanted new URL and no google dialog box appears in the tab area.
Every thing was fine before installed this new security update 20110811165603 into Mac OS 10.6 snow leopard computer. Thanks for your reply and sorry for the delayed response - have been away for a few days over the holidays.
I understand your point about backups and disk permissions. I do have a back up copy and will adopt using the 'verify disk' step in future; so, for me the loss shouldn't amount to any more than the time I have spent, as frustrating as that is. However, I think the point I'd like to make is that doing a disk permissions check is fine for those like me [or others on this forum] since I work in a hi-tech industry, and have worked in a Unix/Linux environment for the last ~20 years so understand about permissions etc. , but I know people with Macs for whom the key advantage is that the they largely 'manage themselves' seamlessly. So, if the verify step is simply a pushbutton check-then-repair step and omitting it can lead to such fatal errors, then why can't it be built into the update script as the first automatic step ? What I mean is; my computer reached this unusable state simply by pressing 'ok' on a planned update, so to the average-Joe user it looks like a 'stop and catch fire mode'.
For info: I have now used Disk Warrior, which is reporting a disk malfunction, but can recover the user data. It seems to be a remarkable coincidence though, because there were no system problems exhibited before the update. -

You can thank me later - after an hour on the phone, I finally got through to a Senior Engineer.
Apperently the issues lies with GRID VIEW.
Open your Itunes, Click on TV SHOWS, then quickly change your view from GRID VIEW (Defaults to this) to List View and Viola!
We tested it out on the phone just minutes ago, my problem is solved and I suspect if you guys try this yours will be too. -
So I have an early 2011 MacBook pro, I believe it shipped with snow leopard originally, as I purchased and upgraded to Lion fairly early on. I am trying to make a partition right now and have it run snow leopard so I can use programs that have PowerPC.
I should note, I replaced both the RAM and the harddrive in my Macbook pro. I changed from 4 GB of ram (that came shipped) to 8 GB of ram from a 3rd party, that I installed on my own months ago, have registered in the computer and have been working fine for quite some time now.
Also I should note I replaced my harddrive. I went from what ever the standard 500 GB harddrive that shipped with 15 inch early 2011 MB pro's. I now have a 3rd party SSD that's 240GB's that I also installed on my own, (at the same time as the RAM---Black friday items) The harddrive has been working just fine since then.
In installing the harddrive I borrowed a friends external harddrive and used a program called carbon copy cloner to get everything over to the SSD.
Now here is my issue. I have ordered the Snow Leopard (10.6.3) install disks from apple, I have created a partition on my SSD for snow leopard, but when I try to select the install disc for snow leopard at boot I get three beeps.
I know this issue has been posted elsewere but it said answered and the answer is no longer available. I also am unsure if any of the RAM or Harddrive swapping could have been causing the issue. I have the old harddrive and RAM still, but unfortunatley have no external harddrive anymore or money to afford one.
Is there any way I can install a partition that runs snow leopard on my early 2011 MB pro with what I have (new SSD, New RAM, Current version Lion running, no external drive, lack of original snow leopard disks [I lost them ] and the general 10.6.3 snow leopard boot disks).
Let me know If there is anything I can do. I'm a now broke college student so i'd like to spend as little $$$$ as possible
*PS I should also note the DVD drive is working fine, it reads the disk, the disk is brand new, it plays DVD's fine and has never had any issues in the years i've used it for similar tasks*
sorry for the long drawn out post, I just wanted to include as much as possible from what I've seen other people have issues withBrettGoudy wrote:

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17. They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP. -
I bought a macbook pro on november 2011 wich had Lion OS installed on it. Playback plug-in in Mainstage 2.1.3 does not play files from the beginning (it leaves out like 50 mSecs or so). Is there a way to revert to Snow Leopard OS?

Installing Snow Leopard on 2011 (newest) MacBook Air?
I was wondering if it is possible to install Snow Leopard on my July 2011 MacBook Air that came with Snow Leopard (I know that Apple does not recommend installing earlier versions of OS X on your Mac but I simply have too until some of the bugs are ironed out of Xcode for Lion). I do not have any physical installation media - only the developer disk image that contains to OS and I was wondering if I was to simply partition a hard drive and 'mount' onto the partition and installing it via 'Option' at startup would work at all.
Thanks a lot for your time in advanced,
~DanielI'm confused.
The July 2011 MBAs came with Lion not Snow Leopard.
Unless you bought a "closeout" earlier MBA in July 2011 which would of come with Snow Leopard.
Which is it?
If it's the new 2011 MBA, then Snow Leopard will not install on the MBA. For one it doesn't have all the right drivers. Apple doesn't support it, and I believe it will not actually install correctly.

Is snow leopard still supported?
About 2 years ago I bought Macmini server with snow leopard sever installed.
Then in June, 2011 I upgraded to Lion, which as a serve seemed to offer less capabilities.
I wonder if other users have had similar experiences?Yes Snow Leopard is stil being supported for security updates, last update occured Oct 16 2012.
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222
However Safari 6 didn't come to Snow Leopard, so you should be using Firefox instead.
iTunes 11 is on Snow Leopard. -
Snow Leopard update won't restart, and how do I install Lion anymore?
Two questions, but the most pressing is the first one: after reinstalling Snow Leopard on my late-2011 Macbook Pro (due to Yosemite breaking Adobe CS6), I keep getting stuck on the purply space-screen. I've read in other discussions that this is somewhat of a common problem, but I have tried reseting PRAM and NVRAM, and installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. None of this has worked. I ran disk utility and nothing came up, so in my novice understanding of these thigns I'm at a loss - any ideas? I have successfully reformatted and installed Snow Leopard on my laptop several times in the past, so this is a mystery now.
Second question: Navigating to my purchases in the Applications app, I can click on Download for Lion and Mountain Lion, but nothing happens. I tried "Option + Click" on the "Purchases" tab as that is supposedly the secret way to enable a re-download (however I don't remember having to do that a few months ago when I successfully reformatted my Macbook here). Assuming I ever solve the first issue above involving the purply-space screen, how do I upgrade to Mountain Lion (as CS6 and Rhino and Modo require it).
Thanks everyone! Really appreciate it.Are you certain that you have a LATE 2011 MBP/ They all came with Lion installed. Early 2011 MBPs came with Snow leopard.
Do you have original Snow leopard installation disks that came with the MBP?
You can check by entering the serial number of the MBP (on the bottom) here:

Post back the relevant model/year information.

Wiki migrated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion missing some links
Hi
I migrated the wiki instance running on my old Snow Leopard Sever to the new Mountain Lion server following the instructions here
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5082
All looked good, but then I find that some, not all, of the links reference the old server instance and come up wtih 404's.
If I right click on the links that are broken and inspect them the results differ.
the outer html has a reference that looks like this
<a class="cc-route-enabled" target="_blank" href="http://old.server/wiki/pages/G3J0z4r/Clint's_Index.html">Clint's Index</a>
a link that works looks like this
the outer reference is the same but the inner
<a class="cc-route-enabled" href="/wiki/pages/Q4g545J/CMS_Teaching_Infrastructure_2012.html">CMS Teaching Infrastructure 2012</a>
The pages still exist. If you do a find for the link title you can find the page ok.
Is there a way to fix the broken links to remove the absolute paths to the old server?
Cheers
JacquiOK I've managed to retrive my folders by doing the following
1/ Open Finder and click on the Go Menu option
2/ Hold down the Alt key so that 'Library' apperas in the list of folders you can go to
3/ Select 'Library' and navigate to the Mail/Mailboxes folder
4/ Expand the tree and find your personal folders somewhere below that node (each personal folder will have its own .mbox extension)
5/ COPY the folders you want to some different location (eg your desktop). You need to do this as you won't be able to access the original location those files are in in the next couple of steps
6/Go to the mail App and choose File->Import Mailboxes...
7/ Select the 'Apple Mail' option from the 'Import From' section and hit continue
8/ Multiple select all the mailboxes you copied to your desktop in step 5/ above
9/ Now all your mailboxes will appear under an 'Import' node in your mail sidebar
10/ Breath a sigh of relief that you have managed to retrieve your precious personal folders!!!
Not sure why Apple is silent on this issues as obviously loads of people are expeiencing itand the fact that they now hide your library folder by default doesn't help one bit!!!
Anyway hope this helps

Is there any way to have a non-Mac user just LOOK at an ical calendar?
