Snow Leopard slowing system

After installing Snow Leopard in my MacBook Pro I noticed many of my applications are slow, including Safari. Furthermore, I had the issue in iTunes with the iTunes store access. Still is not fixed. Sometimes my system just hangs and I need to Force to quit the applications for not responding, especially Safari. I noticed that Safari is hanging with no response many times after installation of Leopard. I downloaded the latest upgrades from the Apple Support help page, but the issue is still there. The Response when the system is booting is slow as well. In addition, I use Parallel software to run Windows applications and is very slow after the upgrade. (previously was stable and working properly). Is anybody has an idea how to fix this issue?

I'm having the same problem after upgrading my iMac to Snow Leopard. At first I thought it was caused by lack of memory after noticing in the Activity Monitor that I had left only about 28MB of RAM left (Leopard 10.5 used less than 1GB most of the time). I installed two Crucial 2GB DD3 1066Mhz memory modules and the sluggishness resolved moderately. Also noticed that Snow Leopard now consumes a lot more memory after upgrading to 4Gbs. The Activity Monitor now shows that it is consuming more than 2Gbs of memory. Well at least there's a bit more than 1GB available. I ran Disk Utilities and Tech Tool Deluxe and everything seems to be fine.
What irony, I switched from Windows to OS X because I was sick and tired of dealing with problems after each upgrade and now am having problems with my iMac after upgrading it or I should say... degrading it. I feel I should do a clean install but then it will be a nightmare having to install everything back. I guess I have to wait until someone comes up with a solution.

It may not have been considered a "Major Release," But when the it's the only OS that the machines you are currently building will run, it's pretty freakin' major!
(I'm not sure if Apple's latest machines will still run 10.5, or not, but from following this thread, I'm guessing not?)
It is the standard at Apple... the latest build of the current OS is what goes on the new machines, and the Motherboards, Chipsets, & BIOS (not the right term for it with Mac, I know) are "hard written" to accept that OS as the absolute minimum, and nothing older (or lower as some call it).
So, since the latest machines are coming preloaded with Snow Leopard (10.6.2) that, and subsequent newer builds of OS 10.6 and up is all they can be loaded with.
This is nothing new. It's industry wide in both Mac and PC. Just try to put XP on a brand new Dell, HP, or Gateway PC. Without flashing the BIOS and taking a "more likely than not" chance of rendering most of your hardware undetectable, it just ain't gonna happen.
Conversely, just as Snow Leopard won't run on a PPC powered Mac, Vista and 7 may install, or appear to, on a single core, older PC, but the first time you install and try to open anything other than the OS itself, you're in for a world of problems.
People have tried to fight this for years. In 2005 Mac users went out of their minds when Apple dropped support for OS 9. A year later, it was Windows 98 users freaking out over their beloved OS being "sunsetted". I was skeptical of the move to Intel processors when I first heard about it, having become a full time Mac user, and being partial to AMD before that. But like Motorola PPC processors, AMDs run hot and heat is the enemy. The new machines run faster, cooler, and do more for less money.
It's a major pain for people who don't have the budget for a new Mac (or PC) and still have old software that is perfectly functional, but they are finding more and more incompatibility as they interact with other people and newer systems. Sooner or later though, technology wins and everyone has to either upgrade or drop out.  Fighting it is futile.  I will always remember the day last Summer when I stopped at a traffic light and next to me was an older, redneck looking fellow in a new brand spanking new Honda Accord. It may have even been a hybrid, I don't know, but duct taped on his dash was what had to be a thirty-five year-old 8-track player with a bunch of wires coming out of the back, also taped to the dash, and running to a pair of 6 x 9 speakers, which were just laying on the dash (no duct tape). I had to wonder why he bothered to buy the latest in automotive technology and yet he was stuck in a time warp for his stereo. Don't Hondas come with some pretty decent CD stereo units? And where can you find 8 track tapes anymore?

  • Safari on Snow Leopard slow

I have loved safari 4 and have used it dedicatedly on leopard with ad block for the last 1 year. However, since I upgraded to snow leopard, and not having ad block, I feel safari is extremely slow. Is anyone else experiencing such a speed drop?

I have the same issue. Pages that were nearly instant before are now exceedingly slow (www.google.com, for example, takes about 7 seconds). I have several other computers on the same network that are either running Leopard or Windows that don't have this problem, so it's not a DNS issue. I've also verified that my network connection isn't saturated.
    I've tried the following:
    * Resetting Safari
    * Emptying the cache
    * Repairing permissions
    * Deleting all subfolders of ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
    * Deleting Downloads.plist, History.plist, and LastSession.plist
    * Removing everything from both the system and account copies of the InputMethods and Internet Plugins folders
This should essentially be a clean install of Safari, but it is still exceedingly slow. Note that it's not consistent: it will load a page quickly then, 5 seconds later, the same page will take a very long time to load.
Sometimes, most of the items on the page will come in nearly instantaneously, but suddenly the page will stop loading for a good 5 to 10 seconds. Once that time elapses, the rest of the page suddenly downloads.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Just upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard - slow slow slow

macbook has slowed - molasses in winter slow.
slow to switch aps, slow to save, aps freezing requiring force quit.
have 1Gb ram and plenty disk space - 15Gb+

Snow Leopard should work fine on your system. First, if you're still at 10.3, install the 10.6.8 combo update from: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 . Use Disk Utility to repair permissions, then install the combo update, then repair permissions again.
Next, you have 15GB empty hard drive space ... you want 10% to 15%+ free for systems usage. If it's below 10%, then you need to free up space, otherwise the system will crawl.
Download Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php . It will give you insight into the health of your hard drive.
Run the Apple hardware test to see if there are any obvious hardware issues. Find the original OS X disks, and insert the one that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the alt/option key down (might work holding the D key down too), choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. While in the extended test, you might push command and L to make it loop several times. Sometimes hardware issues don't show up on one run.

  • Snow Leopard slower than Leopard??

    Hi
On 5 year old macbook with 1GB ram leopard was upgraded to snow.
Since the upgrade the macbook is going slower... What can be the reason for this?

Under some circumstances it's may be possible that Snow Leopard appears slower than Leopard. One technique to boost power in Snow Leopard is to transfer compressed data from the hard drive in to the RAM, Cache and CPU environment. Apples ulterior motive behind this idea was, that in the past the CPU performance grow bigger than the transfer performance from hard drives. In other words Apple thought that the additional benefit of transfer data quicker from a hard drive yield more profit than the cost the CPU have to "pay" to decompress the data. In an old system, e.g. with a single core CPU, this benefit maybe isn't present and the result maybe turns in the opposite direction and you notice a decrease of system performance.

  • Snow Leopard slows to a crawl...

I have a two-year old iMac that I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Since then the system runs incredibly slow, as though the processor's time is suddenly being hogged by something. After a complete shutdown things work better for awhile. Also it seems to backup and sync with MobileMe more often, which will also slow things down quite a bit.
On my relatively new MacBook Pro the upgrade has worked great. Significantly faster all around.
Is anyone at Apple reading these posts?

Same here, It is so slow it is unusable.
It is so slow my network won't even start (ir it migh be anither problem).
It is not frozen, if you stay long enough you may notice something moving every half hour or so.
My machine is brand new, the only 2 apps I installed are Skype and VmWare Fusion. Unplugged all external devices, power in that is it. Rebooted twice (takes almost 20minutes) still no go.

  • How do I get to normal screen from blue screen on iMac with snow leopard operating system

System is working because can still use wireless. Any ideas?

Hello, CMD+r only works in Lion/10.7 & up.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Snow leopard slower than ever

    Hello there,
Since I've installed Snow Leopard ( one year ago...) my mac is slower than ever at the launch ( more than 40 seconds).
I did my best to clean it with Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner, OnyX. ( It fixed my problem of the multicolored circle which was boring me on iPhoto or When i was on Internet...).
I've checked and fixed the disc, it looks ok.
I've delted the soft which started at the launch
I'd like to upgrade my mac to Lion... but first I need to find  what makes it slow.
    What's wrong please?
    Looking forward hearing from helpers

Check this out... Closing down is very fast... here are the errors for the launch
    How can i do? Thanks

My phone was stolen.  How can I get my photos off the iCloud with Snow Leopard.

    Welcome to the Apple Community
You can't, if the photos are in photostream you need a compatible device, if they are in a backup, you can only use the backup to restore to a new device.

  • Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard Server system differences - are they critical

I need to make several virtual machines with MAC OS for QA testing. As only MAC OS Server can be virtualized, does anybody know, will it make a big difference with Desktop version of Snow leopard for testing of antivirus and firewall? The same question is actual for 10.5. Thank you in advance.
If anybody has an apple software QA experience, I would be grateful if you would share it and tell how did you solv such kind of problems.

Were you ever able to solve this problem. I'm having similar issues since upgrading to snow leopard. Four macs connect to a Windows Server 2003 for shared files. Each user has full permissions & when we "get info" it shows read & write permissions. Two of the computers were running 10.4, two were running 10.5. Everything worked properly until upgrading to snow leopard. Some files let me copy, move, delete. Others either just hang up or we get a "no permission" error. Also getting a "pdf is in use" error, even when the file/folder doesn't contain a pdf. We had our IT rep check the server who said everything is in working order. They don't represent macs any longer but feel that it's a mac problem. I would have to agree since this problem only started after the upgrade, and the one machine that was not upgraded (still running 10.5.8) is not dealing with these problems.
Lastly, I would install 10.5 back on all of the computers if I could, but the leopard disk that came with one of the computers wouldn't work with the 2 machines running 10.4 and I didn't see it available at the apple store. I'll buy it if it's still available, but why wouldn't the disks that I have work?
    Thanks for any help
