Snow leopard startup freezes at grey screen
My Snow leopard machine hangs during startup at the screen with the Grey Apple logo. It appears there is a SW issue with my OS X boot partition. Here are facts I have learned:
The computer boots fine if I hold option at startup and select my boot camp partition
The compute boots fine if I attach an external HD with OS X 10.6
Running a disk repair from the external HD, I see the following two issues that are repaired. Also, note the last line about boot partitions
After this disk repair, the disk will still not boot, it hangs at the Grey Apple logo.
Booting in safe mode does not resolve the issue, the machine will still not boot to a desktop
Booting in Verbose mode, drivers initialize with the last succesful line being the ethernet drives (I believe) and then the hangup occurs. It is unclear what state the boot process is at on the hangup.
This situation has happen twice in the past few weeks. The first time I did a reinstall of OS X to resolve the issue. Then, the issue appeared again approximately two weeks later. I'm hoping to avoid a second reinstall (And really, avoid this issue in the future).
Any thoughts on what is happening? It seems perhaps something in the boot partition table or the OS partition, although disk utility says the partition is fine. I have downloaded Test Disk 6.13 to look at the partition table, but I don't know how to interpret the outputs of that program.

As a followup, I tried to run a combo updater install to correct this issue. I booted from my External HD, and downloaded 10.6.8 to update the non-bootable drive. However, 10.6.8 says it cannot be installed on this drive:
I read that 10.6.5 changed something about the partition table, so I tried falling back to 10.6.4 instead, and got the following message at the end of the install process:
I then tried 10.6.5 which says the disk is not properly configured to accepted the installation:
So the non-bootable drive has 10.6.3 installed on it, and 10.6.8 cannot be installed because it is not the startup disk, 10.6.5 cannot be installed because "the requirements are not meet" and 10.6.4 fails during the install process. Talk about nothing going my way!

System model name: iMac7,1 (Mac-F42386C8)I too have had this problem. It is not a Kernel panic, as far as I can tell. I have two Apple Cinema Displays connected. Both are dark, yet this time my mouse arrow is present. Most other times the screens are just dark. This is the first time I can ssh into my box and look at processes running. Other times the box was dead to the world. This most often happens after: a) lock screen, or b) Screen sharing into the box remotely. When I arrive back at work, the system is on, the screen is black, ssh into it may or may not work. This time I tried to kill all my processes one by one. Nothing released the machine display. Screen sharing into it also yields a black screen. I wish I knew how to restart a process like "WindowServ." Reboot computer via ssh command and display are up and running again.
I ran MemTest extensively from single user mode. No errors. I switched boxes, for I bought two identical systems (one for server, one for workstation.) I switched hard drives and ram. Issues still exists on both machines. -

your 13-inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro requires 1066 MHz RAM, but you have 1333 MHz RAM installed. Try replacing the 1333 MHz RAM with 1066 MHz RAM — Macs can be picky about the RAM which they find acceptable. -
At startup I get grey screen and a folder with a flashing question mark. How do I reset my MacBook Pro to the manufacture defaults?
Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

Macbook on Snow Leopard Sleep freeze, slow boot time, blue screen, ... etc.
The macbook has the following problems:
1. When closing the lid or pressing the power button the computer freezes, the fans start spinning fast it stays like that until it drains the battery. This happens every time.
2. Start-up times are very long, like 3 or 4 minutes. This also happens every time.
3. Now after a fresh snow leopard install it doesn't even start up completely, as it stays with the blue background and I can hear the music of the introductory animation.
The macbook worked ok with the factory installed Tiger. The SL DVD is OK, as its installation has been tested on another Mac. The machine's advanced hardware test passed successfully. Resetting Pram and similar actions were unsuccessful as solving the problem.
I don't know what else to do... please help.So mine started doing some of the same things. It freezes when it goes into sleep mode. Then it starts to get really really hot and the drive starts spinning fast. It also takes a very long time to boot up. And it's unresponsive sometimes. I've wiped the drive and reinstalled a few times, but it's still like that. I don't know what's wrong.

Snow Leopard startup hangs on "None of your preferred networks are available" dialogue

Running a 2006 Intel iMac, OSX 10.6.8
I have recently run into the "grey screen at start up" issue that is documented here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
I ran every routine in this article, up to and including a disk repair off the OSX install disk and this step seems to have fixed the grey screen problem. However there is still one major problem unsolved that the article does not cover.
Boot up runs normally and allows me to get into my account (there are 4 accounts on the machine). However i am then getting a dialogue screen "None of your preferred networks are available" with a list of local wireless networks (mine and neighbours).
I have had this dialogue screen at times in the past and have simply been able to click cancel to bypass it. However the system is now hanging on this dialogue. If I try to click Cancel or Other the dialogue box changes position and the remainder of the desktop darkens, as if an action is taking place, but nothing happens beyond that.
The spinning progress wheel appears intermittently on the "preferred networks" dialogue box, suggesting that some sort of routine is trying to run, but never successfully.
I have seen many other discussion posts on the "Preferred Networks" dialogue, but only one which describes the system actually hanging on this dialogue - that was in 2007 and the user was going to reformat the HD - he/she didn't post the outcome.
This iMac is normally connected to the router by Ethernet cable. I have tried booting with and without the cable attached. I have tried booting in safe mode. Neither of these have had any effect.
I have reinstalled Snow Leopard (without erase) and this has had no effect either.
Can anyone recommend any other fixes I can try? Or is a complete HD reformat the only option?

It turned out to be a defect with the wired mouse that I was using. In fact, nothing to do with the "preferred networks" dialogue box at all. Because that box was popping up on startup it just seemed that it was associated with the system hang.
Swapped out the wired mouse for a different one and everything back to normal - after weeks of pain !!!!
Hopefully this will be of use to someone else one day ..................... -
Snow Leopard Crash / Freezing Issue - Keyboard Dead - Hard Reboot Required
Good morning,
Been using Snow Leopard on a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac pretty much since the day of launch. Initially was very pleased, no real problems, seemed to run even smoother than regular Leopard, however, recently, my system has developed a bunch of issues, particularly when running word and/or transmission (possibly other apps, but I have noticed with these two so far).
The main problem is, very randomly, the system will lock-up. This can be after 1 hour or 24 hours, there is no real correlation. After the lock up, you are able to use open apps, ie Transmission, Word, Safari, Finder, etc, but they do not function correctly...for example
Word - You can click into documents, but any keyboard strokes are completely ignored.
Safari - You can browse links on default start page, etc, but you cannot create new tabs or type anything into the address bar.
Finder - You can browse folders; but you cannot perform any functions such as dragging to trash, etc.
Also worth noting, it the main menu bar at the top of the screen continues to say either "Word" or "Transmission" etc, regardless of what application you are in. Clicking on any applications icons in the dock has no response unless they were already running.
The system is unable to shut down or log off, and you cannot quit apps. The only option is to do a hard reset via holding down the power off button.
Note: My system is set to never sleep. There is no screensaver.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I'm a fairly new mac user so i'm not aware how to view log files etc., which may identify the problem.
Many thanks in advance.Just want to reiterate. I am seeing freeze issues with my iMac 2.8 GHZ 4GB ram and wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Had this for two years without problem. When a freeze occurs mouse is reponsive but clicks don't give result. I am unable to open window to force quit apps. It may be related to iTunes but I can't confirm. Happening again now, even as I type this I can't open other appslike console log. I add more later.

IMac 27' (year 2010 - Snow Leopard) won't boot - white screen only
Hi,
my 2010 iMac 27in running Snow Leopard won't start - when I switch it on, I can hear the chime, the screen goes white and gets stuck at this (no Apple logo, no question mark, no mouse pointer). I have waited for minutes but it's definitely stuck.
When there is a DVD in (tried both OSX Instal and Apps Instal), I can hear the drive reading for a few seconds, then it goes silent.
I have found a few similar topics in this and other forums - the issue was solved or helped by entering one of the special boot modes via keyboard shortcuts upon startup. In my case though, none of these shortcuts work - with the sole exception of Cmd+Alt+P+R to reset the NVRAM. What I tried was: C, D, Alt, Eject, N, T, Shift, Cmd-V, Cmd-S ...none of them has any effect.
I learned there are some issues with a wireless keyboard when using these shortcuts, so I got a USB one to rule that out - but it didn't help.
In the beginning, I heard "clicking" noise I am not used to hearing - so I suspect a HDD failure but it would surprise me the machine would not indicate that in some better way than a blank white screen. The clicking then went away - could be after I did the NVRAM reset - not sure.
I also performed an SMC reset by unplugging the power cord for a while - no effect.
As per one recommendation, I tried NVRAM reset a few times in a row. Didn't help but, interestingly, I found that after 3 such resets, holding D will eject the DVD (without the 3 resets, "D" won't do it). Prior to that I had no way of getting the DVD out.
The computer was running fine before I switched it off for the night on the previous day. There was no system update, no change I am aware of.
The only thing beyond default is extra RAM but that has been there for months now without problems (and just to be super sure, I removed the modules but no effect).
At this point I have run out of ideas - any suggestions are very welcome.Some things you can try.

My computer screen started to flicker. Then the mouse pointer will freeze while the screen continues to flicker, not allowing me to do anything except force shut down with power button. When starting up, the rotating circle freezes up on the gray screen. I try starting up from the Snow Leopard CD and either I get a error message about something wrong with the power supply and needing a force shut down or screen flickers and mouse pointer freezes again.
I ended up taking it to an Apple store for diagnostic tests. They tried what I did (safe boot, start from disk utility, hardware checks), and it didn’t work. They tried to start-up from an external hard drive and when that didn’t work the employee recommended I leave it for more testing. His initial guess was the hard drive was bad. I called a week later for a status update and they said the logic board was the problem and they were going to fix it free of charge. Given that my Apple Care expired two months prior and otherwise would’ve charged me over $500 to fix, I didn’t ask questions about the problem. So far my computer is working well, though when I try to load downloaded music from my iPhone to iTunes, it’s recognized as a new computer and I have to reauthorize it to my iTunes account.

Amazon downloader may prevent Snow Leopard Startup
I installed Snow Leopard on my two Macs about 3 weeks ago - no problems so far.
This morning , for the first time ever, in more than 5 years of using Macs , my Mac Pro failed to startup.
By pressing shift while switching on I was able to get it going in 'Safe ' mode ( I had to look that up!).
The only thing I have changed in the last 24 hours was to install the Amazon downloader - a version said to be OK for Snow Leopard.
I found that application and put it in the trash, having learned that some 'installers' leave things in the startup list. I couldn't find an 'uninstall' command for the downloader , but equally couldn't find any mention of it in startup file lists.
The Mac started OK after shutdown - I'm suspicious about the Amazon downloader and have advised the software company responsible.[not loaded] net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist [Click for support]
SIMBL is a sytem hack. Try removing it.

Bought used iMac, reinstalled snow leopard, stuck at start up screen
I bought a used iMac from someone who has owned it for about a year. He had upgraded to Lion from snow leopard but I wanted to reformat everything back to the original settings(like new) so I could start from scratch. I used the original snow leopard start up discs that came with the machine and held down c when restarting, the installation went fine but when the computer restarted after the installation the apple in the grey screen appeared and the spinning circle at the bottom spun for a few seconds then froze. I let it sit over night thinking it was just taking a while to start up but in the morning it was still on the same screen, nothing had changed. Any idea what the problem is?
-ClemYou have to use Disk Utility to erase the ENTIRE boot drive by selecting the drive makers name on the far left, it will have the disk size too.
You need to do this to erase the 10.7 Recovery and reset the partition map back to 10.6 acceptable version so your 10.6 Disk Utility can repair the drive (and get the machine to boot) and remove the 10.7 EFI partition for 10.6 version.
I suggest you also use the Security Option > Zero all data, not for scrubbing the drive, but also for mapping off any failing sectors.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
Once 10.6 is installed, setup and Software update until clear.
then install programs, then files and only to 50% of the hard drive if possible for best performance.
don't go over 80% as it can start having issues as it gets near full.
Good Luck, setup a clone and then you can boot from the external clone drive anytime and in seconds.

Snow Leopard Install and the Grey Spinning Wheel
So, I purchased Snow Leopard (says it's 10.6.3) this afternoon, and after the very long install process, got stuck with the grey screen with the apple and the spinning wheel, and nothing further will happen. I read on a few other posts that doing the install again eventually fixed the problem, but I have tried 3 times now and nothing is working. I know this is a problem lots of people have had, but I haven't been able to identify the solution for it, and Apple is closed for the holidays. Any help would be appreciated.
BTW, I had been running Tiger, and I have a 13.3 inch Mac Book.Do you have your original Tiger installation discs? If so then you can reinstall it if anything goes wrong. At this point you cannot clone the system since it no longer functions correctly, so it's best to simply backup your data so it isn't lost.
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
4. Press COMMAND-E.
5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
/usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
I would suggest the following procedure for erasing the drive before installing Snow Leopard:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation. -
So yesterday my iMac froze while using iTunes. I had to manually power it off. I turned it on again and it booted fine. I tried iTunes again and shortly after that it froze again. I manually shut it down again. I tried to turn it on once again and it won't load the desktop. It just stays at the grey screen with the apple and spinning thing. I am pretty sure I have to erase and install again, but I am not really sure on how to do it correctly especially since I can't even get to the desktop.

How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
My iMac 10.6.8 w/ snow leopard keeps FREEZING/CRASHING??
ok lets see if i can type this without my computer freezing.
SO. to begin, i have a iMac 10.6.8 which also has snow leopard. I have recently downloaded many things, that ended up not working so i deleted them. I dont know if thats whats been slowing it down (the downloads still being installed but deleted from trash?) but lately my computer has been very glitchy. I dont have apple care or whatever, so i cant call.
This morning there was a "software update" so i decided, whatever, i'll do it. When i did, i rebooted and now my computer is freezing like a mother.
It is VERY ANNOYING and i dont know how to fix it. It just freezes randomly to. I go on safari for a minute, freeze, then hold power button to reboot.

pretty much everything sets it off. I need to know WHY!? i have had it for a long time and its never been this bad. Another thing that sets it off is runescape. i play it from time to time when im bored, and now it freezes every time. but runescape isnt the only thing that freezes it, it freezes on everything else to. its so frustrating!!!!!!!!

I have a grey screen and grey rotating wheel startup probs. I have tried repairing with the disk utility, resetting PRAM, booting in safe mode (which gave a subset of the errors that 'disk repair' did- namely- 'invalid sibling link,invalid record count, invalid node structure, invalid key length) and finally trying to get to archive&install the o/s, but it cannot find the destination volume. Is an erase the only option? PS I have backed up most files individually, but my daughter did not back up any from her user account. Any help would be appreciated. JGray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar
