Snow Leopard still safe to use?

For some reason my mac always freezes randomly with Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
Is it still safe to use Snow Leopard for browsing with Firefox and emailing with Mail app?
Comments please.

Excuse for my bad english (i'm italian) But i will try to tell what i understood.
I too use firefox, with snow leopard, and i think is safe i'm sure of it.
In the page of Apple support
http://www.apple.com/support/sitemap/
apart from the new maverick that is the current release
than, as you all can see, under the voice of "earlier release" there are all the OS that apple still support ( and this means also that if there will be the need of a security uppdate this will come.
and together with lion and mountain lion they still support not only SNOW LEOPARD but  LEOPARD too, that is older than snow leopard.
Remember that Snow Leopard is still sold by apple so they HAVE TO SUPPORT IT!
When, by the end of february there was the world doubt of "maybe apple stop support to snow leopard" one day a went to ask in a Big apple store in my city. And they told me that all that things that the blogger was telling about apple that will stop support snow leopard was only silly things told to make caos...  They told me that snow leopard is still support by apple as we can see in apple support page sitemap, and that if others OS was updated (for security update) and Snow Leopard last time have not security update this was because Snow Leopard HAD NOT the need to be Updated at this moment. But if in the future there will be the need of an update that wlll come!
Those things they told me in the shop is clearly in line with what Peter Cohen told in this article here...
http://www.imore.com/snow-leopard-vulnerable-attacks-has-apple-really-abandoned- it-0
So i think we can all be quiet ad use our snow leopard withoud doubt.
The only important things for us that use firefox together with snow leopard is the hope that MOZILLA will go on to make newer version of firefox that CAN run with snow leopard!
Unfortunatly Mozilla stoped give version for LEOPARD time ago so stop to give browser news for a OS that is still supported by apple...
So i hope that they will not do the same with snow leopard, but i hope that they will go  on to give us new version of firefox that run with snow leopard for a long time AT LEAST till snow leopard will be supported by apple (but i hope even more!)
For this i already written to mozilla italian forum asking to the mozilla people "please do not stop to give us firefox for snow leopard!" go on to make us happy and give it to us for a long time!

  • Snow Leopard still cannot webcam using iChat and AIM?

Apple claimed that snow leopard will be able to use aim's server to control web chats when a peer-to-peer connection cannot be done. I purchased snow leopard on friday and I am trying to connect with my friend who has windows xp and aim 6.9 (we also experimented with aim 5.9). I dont get her screen and she does not get my screen (it just shows a black square) and yet it says "connected". With aim 5.9 we were able to hear each other but no video. Nothing with aim 6.9, just black.
Webcam works perfectly when we use oovoo or skype but I want to utilize the features of my mac and know that they are working instead of going through third-party applications.
Both of us have hardware firewalls on our ends (with windows and mac firewall disabled). All outbound ports are allowed, all inbound are blocked except for several ports which are defined in Port Forwarding.
    Please help me out
    Thanks

    Hi,
All outbound ports on both networks are opened to the public. Inbound ports to my network are only ports 3389 for remote desktop (to one of the windows machines on my network) and port 80 for a web server we host.
The reason I dont have any iChat ports opened up is because Apple announced that snow leopard will be able to use AIM's server as the video chat host when peer-to-peer calling is unavailable, which applies to my case.
We already tried initiating the video chat from Windows, it gives the same exact results when initiating the chat through the Macbook.
    Thank you

  • I recently upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Does Snow Leopard still exist on my Mac? If so, is it possible to restart under Snow Leopard in order to run PowerPC apps? If not, is there an OS available in 64 bit that supports PowerPC apps? Mav ***.

I recently upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Does Snow Leopard still exist on my Mac? If so, is it possible to restart under Snow Leopard in order to run PowerPC apps? If not, is there an OS available in 64 bit that supports PowerPC apps? Mav ***.

The only reason I upgraded to Mavericks was because my Snow Leopard OS was 32 bit, which I was told would support only 4GB of RAM.
That wasn't quite right. You can put in as much RAM as your Mac's hardware supports. The division is in the apps themselves. A 32 bit app can't use more than 4 GB or RAM. A 64 bit app can use much more.
For example, as a 32 bit only version, Photoshop CS3 can't use more 4GB of RAM, no matter how much you actually have installed. CS4 or later can use all the RAM you want to throw at it.

If my experience with a similarly aged computer is any indicator, you'll notice an immediately speed hit once you've upgraded to Mavericks. Each OS X update tends to be more memory hungry than the previous and my 2007 iMac wasn't happy with Lion until I upgraded the RAM and at that point Lion performance roughly matched Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion and then Mavericks shaved some speed off again. Mavericks on the 2007 iMac was okay for the most part but switching between applications was slow as was the fileselector.
My 2009 MBP saw similar slowdowns with Lion but I was above to upgrade it to 8GB which made a big difference. (My iMac was limited to 6GB) but I still saw a significant speed hit with Mt Lion when I tried to run multiple memory intensive applications. Seeing how my wife's MacBook Air dealt with Mt Lion with only 4GB I decided to install an SSD in the MBP and wow what a difference. Tried it with the iMac using a FireWire800 enclosure and saw similar improvement.
So to boil it down to one sentence, you are going to see a significant speed hit with only 4GB but if you can afford to upgrade your drive to an SSD you'll be amazed at how well that computer can run.

    Hello,
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they do still have it:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
And it's been reported that if you have a MobileMe account Apple will send one free.
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

  • My 17" Macbook Pro battery swelled up and kind of exploded. The apple genuis said it is still safe to use, that doesn't sound right.

I am just kind of worried that it doesn't even fit. Do I need to kind of pop the expanded portion of the battery to get it to fit back in? The case of the battery has come apart and so to fit it back in I would have to press it back together. The battery is low count and had great capacity when it happened. I don't want to have to buy another one when this one is fairly new.

... The apple genuis said it is still safe to use, that doesn't sound right.
I agree with you, that's not right.
This may seem to be a little problem - fix it before it becomes a big one.

  • Migrate from a snow leopard to Mountain Lion using a Time machine, is it possible?

    Hi,
I currently have a Mac running Snow Leopard and I'm using Time Capsule to store my backup. I'm planning in buying a new iMac as soon as they are available and I would like to know what is the recommended procedure to move over all my stuff (program, docs, pictures, etc) from my old Mac to the new Mac
    Thank for your help,
    Ignacio

The first time you boot your new Mac into Setup Assistant you will be prompted to migrate. Choose from "Time Machine Backup".

  • A gold connector is missing on lightning charger cable. Is it still safe to use?

One of the little gold connectors on the lightning charging cable is missing. Is it still safe to use?

If a connector is missing then the cable is damaged and will no longer work as expected or at all. Get a new cable.

  • When Lion officially comes out from the Mac App Store, I understand that I can just buy it from there. However, will the laptops have Lion automatically? Or does it come with Snow leopard still.

The ones sold that day will come with Snow Leopard most likely but they will be able to get a free upgrade to LIon if they apply within 30 days. Hardware coming through the supply chain from the day of the announcement will have Lion installed so it depends what stock people have to move before buyers see those.

  • Still waiting Snow Leopard allow me to use FireWire port

    Hi Everybody:
Completely dissapointed with the not ready yet multi bugs Snow Leopard.
After reading from all of you, the fact that SL can`t detect my FireWire port
I`m sure will seem just a minor problem comparing with all I read everyday
    happening to other users.
I`ve tried everything that a long time Mac user knows by essence.
I defy helper people in this forum to find me a solution but I`m quite sure
that this freezed Snow Leopard will not mount my FireWire.
    Thanks in advance to everybody.

    Hi, skyluco,
I've been following this issue in various places since SL came on the market, in a variety of forums. I suffer from the problem myself with a Pioneer drive in an external casing fitted with a "Prolific" bridge.
It seems to affect all of the Pioneer "1O0" series (108, 109, 112, 116, you name it) , but some other brands' like Sony drives from the same period, have been affected too. Some later Pioneer drives don't seem to suffer from it but sometimes need to be running before the system is booted to be able to work properly under SL.
I had initially assumed that the problem was the Prolific bridge (which has a bit of a history of problems) but people with these drives in enclosures with Oxford, and other bridges, also seem to have issues.
The same drives seem to work fine under USB, which suggests that it involves some sort of interaction between the drive and the FW bridge and SL, rather than a simple problem easily "blamed" on one component or the other.
Unfortunately the only solution available at present is to use the drives through USB. It MAY be that a firmware update of either the bridges or the drives, OR a change to SL's implementation of FW could fix it. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the first two solutions, though, as these are mostly "old" drives in terms of the lifespan of technology these days. It is a long, long time since Pioneer last updated the firmware for my Pioneer 109, for example! Maybe the later drives, like the 116 , might score one, though.
As far as a "fix" in SL goes, my bet is that this would probably depend on whether it could be tied into a more general SL update for other FW issues. FW 400 issues with older external burners might not be at the forefront of Apple concerns these days, though, given that the only Mac that still uses it is the plastic base level MacBook, which have a built in burner anyway.
I notice that performance under USB on my own external 109 burner when hooked up to a current model MBP's USB port is much better than it was on older Macs that I own, too, though still not as good as FW400 was on an earlier FW400 equipped MBP.
So I'm not holding my breath waiting for a fix, I'm afraid. At present the only solution is really to either use USB or get a new drive.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • I'm still on Mac OS, the original, can I upgrade to Mac OS X snow Leopard still?

Alright, I've been using Mac Os, the very very first Mac OS . I've been wondering if I can still update up to OS X Snow Leopard. I seriously hope I can.

Click on a bare patch of desktop to make Finder active, then go to the Apple menu. "About This Mac" or "About This Computer" should be the first item in the list. What is the full OS version number given?

  • FHMX, Snow Leopard and Safe Mode

Yesterday, FreeHand MX crashed every time I tried to open a file - any file - including the original 'Defaults Ltr' template supplied with the FHMX installation. I had not performed any new system updates, nor installed any new software or fonts.
I first tried a number of my usual trouble-shooting strategies such as deleting preferences and repairing disk permissions, but none of that helped.
Then I remembered the advice posted on this forum by edtechweb, to start the Mac in Safe Mode (hold down shift key during machine restart). I did and FreeHand ran. I restarted in regular mode and FH worked normally again.
    What a relief!
Here is Apple's technote on Safe Boot, Safe Mode:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
I'm not sure which of the house cleaning operations performed by a safe boot clears the way, but it sure helps FHMX get back on its feet.
    FreeHand MX, 11.0.2
Mac OS X 10.6.2, Snow Leopard
    Intel Mac Pro

Don't see anything specifically about Time Machine not working here. But maybe doesn't load required kernel extensions for TM. On my 10.6, Time Machine Menu is in System/Library/Core Services. Nothing specifically, anyway, for kernel. But doesn't mean those extensions not loading, whatever they are, might not be the cause.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Also, since Safe Boot is primarily meant as a troubleshooting/diagnostic tool, I can imagine TM might be disabled there.
Since I don't use TM, maybe someone who does will chime in here with their experience.

  • Does using Snow Leopard mean I can use my full 8GB of RAM?

    Hi Folks,
    I have a 2 x3Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 8GB of RAM, running 10.4.11 (Tiger).
Would upgrading this to Snow Leopard (10.5) allow us to take advantage of more RAM?
Apple's FAQ appears to suggest this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27734
    Thanks to clarify.
    Lurch

Not with FCP/ FCS. The suite is still 32 bit which means 4 GB ram addressable.
On the other hand, if you run multiple apps at the same time, you have always been able to use all the ram in the machine.

  • Safari on Snow Leopard painfully slow to use in foreground.

"If you have broadband and your Safari does not load 99% of all web pages in less than 2 seconds, and the majority of them in less than one, there is something wrong with your system."
sigh OK I AM OPENING A NEW THREAD.
Even though the previous thread explained the exact same symptoms that others were experiencing. If I sound annoyed because I am.
Basically if I use safari the browser takes forever to load a page on broadband.
    - It has nothing to do with DNS or any kind of network settings.
So if I pick a page like say "digg.com" with just Safari running.
    - 6 seconds with browser in foreground.
    - 3 seconds with browser running in background (clicked off it).
That is also nothing to do with caching issue either, because I tested this a few times with pages with/without cached pages.
Now if I have any kind of app that uses graphics running at the same time then safari basically becomes unusable in the foreground.
With Wow running window'ed, safari in the foreground to load digg.com can take a few minutes. If I try to load that same site and switch to any other app it will load the page 1-2 seconds from when I switch away from it.
Prior to snow leopard I never experienced this issue.
If the page was never in the cache to begin with then not only will it take forever to load but the browser becomes unresponsive until it does. Again switching away from the browser window (even clicking on the desktop) puts the speed back to what it once was.

Have the same problem so at least it is just not me. Was all excited when Snow Leopard came out because it was suppose to be so efficient and fast with the new Safari version according to the hype. Nottttttt! My internet never hung up with Leopard and the previous Safari and now I get the spinning wheel all of the time. Tried loading the newest Flash and this helped for a while. Shutting down and restarting seems to help for a while but it goes back to being a slug. Maybe it is because I am leaving more windows and tabs open but I still did that before. Have seen lots of possible remedies posted but it seems that Apple should get on this. Feels like I am back on dial up and yes I have tested my connection which is comcast high speed (fast on my PC) and have plenty of hard drive space available. Judging from all of the posts on here at least I am not going crazy.

  • Can i install snow leopard on Macbook without using Time Machine?

Hi, I've backed up my files using SuperDuper and made 2 copies of my data on 2 usb sticks. Do I also need to use Time Machine to back up my files aswell, in order to update osx and install snow leopard?? If I've already got my 2 copies of my files on usb sticks, isn't that enough backing up? Any suggestions will be appreciated thanks!

Thanks for answering, so did you manage to upgrade your mac with snow leopard without using time machine? I'd just like to make sure I'm doing the right thing.
To clear up some possible confusion, you don't need any backups (Time Machine or otherwise) to upgrade a Mac from an earlier OS version to Snow Leopard. To do that, just follow Apple's instructions to launch the "Install OS X" app on the Snow Leopard DVD, which upgrades the OS to Snow Leopard without changing your user settings, erasing or changing your user files, & so on. It is an easy process & generally works quite well.
The backup(s) are in case something goes wrong, which is unlikely but not impossible. You should regularly be backing up at least your important user files to an external device whether or not you upgrade ("important" meaning anything you can't afford to lose) since hard drives can fail without warning or other calamities might destroy some or all of the data on them.
At upgrade time, bootable clones like SuperDuper! makes are especially good insurance against any unforeseen upgrade problems: if something goes wrong you can just clone back to the internal drive & return to the pre-upgrade state, without having to hassle with installing anything.
