Snow Leopard to Mavericks - shortcuts

Hi, I am currently running 10.6.8 on Macbook Air.
My keys have some default shortcuts programmed - in particular: F1-2 brightness, F3 All windows expose, F6-8 iTunes back/play/forward, F9-11 volume, F12 eject.
Same with my trackpad - 4 fingers up = desktop, down = all windows.
I love these functions and have recently tried a different computer that was purchased with Mavericks, and all of these functions appear to have changed. My question is, if I upgrade this computer (purchased with Snow Leopard) to Mavericks - will it keep these or will they all be replaced with the new shortcuts?

Recently I upgraded from snow leopard to Mavericks . Since the upgrade my Adobe Creative Suite 4 will not launch any programs. I downloaded adobe license recovery it says " this program is no longer supported " .
At this point I am ready to go back to snow leopard if that will fix the problem. What do I do ?

Dual Boot with Snow Leopard and Mavericks not possible?

I have a Early 2011 Macbook Pro with 2,3 GHz i7 Quad and two 512 GB SSDs (the secondary disk in an optical drive bay enclosure). This Macbook Pro can run Snow Leopard and Mavericks on the primary disk without problems. When I try to set up a dual boot system however, problems appear and it looks like it is not possible. When I start from Snow Leopard, I cannot select Mavericks as a start volume and vice versa. The error message says something like "Bless tool" cannot use this disk, i.e. unmount and boot from it. The problem remains when I exchange the disks (putting the primary disk in the drive enclosure and vice versa). When I put the secondary drive in an external case however, it is possible to boot from it - but strange things happen when the system starts: My computer clock is reset to 1/1/2001, WiFI passwords are not remembered for more than one session, disk permissions are reported as "repaired" but do apear as not repaired when I check them again - and other issues). I have verified both disks already and repaired permissions but that does not change the situation. So my experience is different from what is said in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/566781. It looks like the latest Mavericks cannot coexist with Snow Leopard on neiter a secondary internal drive nor on an external drive. This is strange since both disks and systems work flawless when run alone. Any suggestions to solve this problem?

When I check the Mavericks disk in the optical drive with disk utility after booting / running Snow Leopard on the primary disk I get som errors, see below ("disk utility Info"). So after all, I decided to erase the disk and install Mavericks new. But even erasing the disk is not possible when it is in the optical drive enclosure. I get this error message:
"Volume Erase failed with the error:
Could not unmount disk"
When I put this disk into an external case connected via USB however, it starts and runds MAvericks without any Problem. Same happens when I put thie Mavericks disk into the internal primary hard disk place.

If I would update Snow Leopard to Mavericks, would I have this?

As I got no real experience comments from people who updated Mac OS from Snow Leopard to Mavericks on a MacBook White Unibody, on this discussion, now I'm trying to be more concise, and ask you for more specific questions on the matter.
So, if I would updated to Mavericks, Would I have…?
VoiceOver Voices in different languages, as they come from factory since Lion, or stayed just with the English ones I have now?
Full Screen capability of all apps at the same time? Now, it's like my PC has only one "Full Screen", so, when you open one app on Full Screen, all the others go to windows.
The newest versions of iLife, iWork, Photo Booth, Stickies…? Now, I have Garage Band 6.0.5, iPhoto 9.2.3, iMovie 9.0.4; iWork 9.1, Photo Booth 3.0.3, Stickies 7.0
iChat, iWeb, iDVD, Front Row, X11… as I have now, or would them be erased or changed for other apps? Or I would not be capable for running them, as the Power PC apps I have and can run now?
Chess app in Spanish too, as it comes from factory since Lion, or it still remains only in English, as now?
Spanish dictionary on Disctionary app? Now I only have English and Tesaurus on my Mac, and the capability of searching on wikipedia on internet from the app?
Timer Coalescing, App Nap, Compressed Memory, GateKeeper, app's sandboxing, Automatic Versions… or any of those is not allowed on my MacBook White unibody?
The ability to see the complete miniature windows opened on the same desk as easy as sliding up four fingers on the trackpad (as I can see now the ones opened on the same "Space")?
To update my RAM? Now I have 2 Gb, and I saw it is exactly the requirment of Mavericks. I'm not sure which was the requirement of Snow Leopard, which actually runs pretty fine.

PPC apps haven't been supported since Lion was introduced (2011).

iWeb has been discontinued. So has iDVD, but if you have it installed, it still works. Front Row was discontinued. No idea about X11.
PowerPC applications are supported on Snow Leopard, my actual OS. As apple does not mention anything about on http://www.apple.com/osx/http://www.apple.com/osx/advanced-technologies/, I can easily guess that same thing could happen with other apps, like FrontRaw, iWeb or the others apps I mentioned. For me, it sounds strange that apple offers its best ultimate OS just for free. I think there's something hidden for user like me, with Snow Leopard., for instance, not to update Voice over Voices, PhotoBooth or anything else…
I'd like to be completely sure of what i'd have, for example if I'd have spanish dictionary and VoiceOver voices before updating. If not, probably it does worth to do so.
Sorry, but how do you propose having more than one app at full screen at a time?
By means of something we call SPACES on Snow Leopard, and you called MISSION CONTROL, if I'm not wrong, on Lion and upper. You can switch among different desks running every one a different app on FullScreen, can't you?
By the way, which OS did your macbook pro come with from factory? the one that is running mavericks now.

Installing Snow Leopard over Mavericks

I messed up my Mavericks installation by using CleanMyMac, and cannot user software update, download from the App Store, use Preview or a number of different apps. System Restore does not work for some reason, maybe CMM messed that up too.
I am going to reinstall Snow Leopard, then redownload Mavericks. And never use CleanMyMac again!!!
I cannot erase my hard drive, the button is grayed out. Can I just reinstall Snow Leopard over Mavericks - I don't care about backing up any data.

If you have the Snow Leopard install disks you can proceed as described above. It makes no difference that the Mac came with Leopard (you just can't install a system older than the one the Mac came with). However you will need to erase the disk: you can't install an older system over a newer one.

When I want to upgrade my snow leopard to mavericks the app store is telling me that Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer. So I've checked the System Requirements and I should be good.

Migrating Stickies content and Safari Reading List from Snow Leopard to Mavericks

I am about to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks but am concerned about maintaining the integrity of two collections of important material: the contents of hundreds of Stickies notes, and the collection of Reading List bookmarks in Safari. I want to be able to access these items from the new versions in Mavericks. From what I've read, both sets of material should be portable, but I want to make sure that there will not be unforeseen problems and loss of this content. Are there any problems or issues people have encountered doing this, or any tricks or tips I should be aware of?

Try making a test user account in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Then log out of your usual user account and try the test user account, and see if the website will let you in.
I suspect that the problem is an internet plugin that is not compatible with Mavericks. The old internet plugin will not be in the test user account.
If the site lets you in with the test user account, then it's a process of trial and error to figure out which plugin is the culprit.
The internet plugins are found in a few places.
Most are in /Library/Internet Plugins
Some may be in ~/Library/Internet Plugins
~/Library is hidden by default.

How do I upgrade snow leopard to Mavericks on one of my older macbooks? I note that Mavericks is no longer available via the App store, only Yosemite, and I do not want the latter. My latest macbooks all have Mavericks pre-installed, and I want parity on all.

OS X 10.9 Mavericks is no longer an available, downloadable OS version.
You can choose to decide and download the free OS X 10.10 Yosemite OR pay to download either OS X 10.7 Lion or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.

If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.

If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall these apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.

I just downloaded anew version of safari, but now I can't use it because I have OS 10.6.8 snow leopard, and it needs 10.9 mavericks. I have heard I can download it for free from the App store, and go from snow leopard to mavericks. I can't seem to find the download anywhere here? Can anyone help me with this?

Your computer can’t be upgraded past 10.6.8. If desired, switch to a product such as Firefox.

The folder would be at the root of your hard drive. Double-click Macintosh HD and look there.
If it isn’t there, I’m not sure what it is seeing.

I'm not sure if you will need to boot into Snow Leopard to do this, but if you can see the Mail folder in Snow Leopard you can drag it over to Mavericks.
Apple Mail stores your data in User's Library/Mail.
Your User's Library is hidden in Mavericks. See:

The answer was more complicated. I had to have an Apple Care tech help me onscreen. Had to go to Time Machine to restore (which I had tried, but couldn't find the right files to import. The Mail icon was barred). They helped me find them. It was very complicated, with many steps involved. I never could have figured it out on my own. Even the tech was not sure how, or if it would work. And it took about 1/2 hour for the stuff to download. But, the problem was solved eventually
