Snow Leopard Updates...

If I put a new internal hard drive in my Mac Pro, can I still get my Snow Leopard OS updated to 10.6.8? I have my original OSX disc, but it's 10.6.3.

Yes.

  • Snow Leopard Update Broke 2 Printers (Samsung, Brother)

One of the Snow Leopard updates has broken both of my printers. Both are hard-wired network printers that previously worked fine.
    1. Brother HL-5250DN B/W laser
    - When I print HTML pages, the page background color defaults to black, so I get a solid black page with graphics stuck in. I first noticed this in Safari; changing the "print backgrounds" setting doesn't fix the problem. I then saved a page (www.apple.com) to HTML source and tried printing it from other apps. Firefox & Text Edit both had the same problem. MS Word (Office 2004) did not.
    - If I create a PDF file from a web page in Safari, then print it using Preview, the problem occurs. If I print it using Photoshop Elements, it prints correctly.
Note that images LOOK fine. The all-black background only occurs when printing.
    2. Samsung CLX-3170 Color Laser
No matter what I try to print, I always get the same error: "couldn't create rgb colorspace". I have searched both these forums and the web and can't even find a description of what might be causing this (although may Mac owners seem to be having variations of the problem).
    3. Troubleshooting -- What I have tried (systematically, multiple times)
    - Re-installed latest printer drivers from Manufacturer's sites
    - Installed Gutenprint 2.4 CUPs drivers
    - Repaired permissions
    - Reset the Print subsystem and re-installed all printers
    - Tried different printer drivers where available (the Brother has a BR-script driver)
    - Run OS X software update
    - Restarted my system
    - Removed printer-related items from Logon
    - Reset Safari
    - Run Onyx and cleaned all caches and nearly everything else
    4. I have an iMac G5 running 10.5.8. It prints all of the above to both printers with no problems.
At this point I'm starting to wonder how well Windows 7 might run on my iMac... (only half kidding).
I've wasted hours on this problem. I hope that someone at Apple has a solution.

If you are using the Brother driver, have you tried using the Generic PostScript PPD as a workaround?

Which driver are you using when adding the printer? Have you tried the other one? Samsung has SL drivers for this model, so you shouldn't have to use the Gutenprint driver.
I hope that someone at Apple has a solution.
Apple doesn't write the drivers, so if using the Generic PostScript PPD or switching drivers doesn't work, you might have better luck contacting Brother and Samsung.

  • IPhone SDK 3.1.3 XCode 3.2.1 Snow Leopard update (lcrt1.10.6.o not found)

Today I downloaded the iPhone SDK 3.1.3 XCode 3.2.1 Snow Leopard update.
After installing it, I looked in the Project Info. In the Deployyment section, the "Mac OS X Deployment Target" is set to "Max OS X 10.5".
Naturally, as fussy I am, I changed it to Mac OS X 10.6, which is what I want. After Building, it reports an ld error: i.e.
ld: library not found for -lcrt1.10.6.o
Why does this happen? Did others have the same experience?
Is this normal or how to fix? (Other than the obvious step to go to look for the missing library and try to install it myself).

Sony has put in a position that the camera was connected with their software called PlayMemories Home . This then allows you to import movies and photos on the computer and then use them in different ways. However, when the camera is connected to the mac and I said Mass Storage USB Connected , then you execute this program I told you about two seconds later , however returns an error message that is: Connect the device to your computer or multimedia support . I do not understand .

  • Imac i5 snow leopard update

Hi I bought an imac i5 27inch just before xmas 09. No problems. I bought the snow leopard update today ($40 from Harvey Norman) and tried to install it. Initially it started ticking over. It initially said 45 miniutes to install. Then I went back about 5 mins later than it said 49 mins to install. I then came back about an hour later and there was a white screen with the apple logo. I left it for another hour.....just the same. So I switched it off and on with the power button. White screen reappeared. Left it for two hours and no change. Took out all the peripherals. Switched it off and on....and left it for 5 hours....still the same. The mac does not respond. I cannot get the snow leopard disc out. Not sure what to do. The imac is getting quite hot (like it is doing something) when it is on....I have now switched it off. I would very grateful for any ideas. This imac was not loaded up with much.....most of the hard drive is free and there is extra (apple) RAM.

I don't understand why you bought a Snow Leopard upgrade disk. The 27" iMac i5, introduced in October of 2009, comes with Snow Leopard installed. Are you sure your iMac is the one described in this Technical Specification?
If so, the retail Snow Leopard DVD, released several months before it, does not fully support the hardware in your iMac & you should only reinstall the OS if needed using the system discs that came with your iMac.

  • Snow leopard update lost iPhoto

    Hi
Sorry but the preamble is a bit long.
My son gave me his mac mini - great. Had installed windows on it instead of snow leopard (why???).
He had bought the Snow leopard update disc - Mac came with Leopard.
    I want Snow leopard.
I inserted the Snow leopard disc and installed it fine.
    Where has iPhoto gone?
I think it's on the original Leopard disc but it's not in the optional instals.
The Mac will not boot from the Leopard disc (I suspect because it's the previous OS).
    Can anyone help?
I realise that I should have installed the original Leopard disc before the Snow Leopard update.
    Thanks
    Chris

I am surprised that you were able to install OS X 10.6 without your system having a previous version of OS X installed - in fact, I thought that was impossible from the upgrade disk.
This is only true for the special Snow Leopard upgrade discs that are not retail products. One example is the white "CPU Drop-in DVD" that came with some Macs manufactured shortly after Snow Leopard was released or still may come with some refurbished older Mac models that Apple sometimes sells. All these Macs originally came with Leopard installed (& that is what their included grey system discs install). The "drop in" disc allows users to upgrade these Macs to Snow Leopard but does require Leopard to be installed first for licensing reasons.
I received one of these discs in the box with the refurbished 2008 20" iMac I bought from Apple. You can't mistake it for a retail disc -- although both are white & have the same Snow Leopard picture on them, the "CPU Drop-in DVD" label & the "not to be sold separately" notice make it clear it isn't a retail product.

  • Latest snow leopard update taking forever

Seems like the latest snow leopard update is stuck on a blue screen with the turning wheel thing. Is it possible to restart the upgrade without messing up my MacBook?

It might get messy but eventually you won't have a choice. Try a hard restart into Safe Mode:
Be sure the computer is shut down by using the hard Power button.
Press the power button again after one minute.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Then use your machine's original software installation disk to do a Repair Permissions.
Restart your machine after removing the disk and go to the Apple Store/Support/View All Support Downloads. Select the 10.6.5 Combo Updater and use that to attempt another download/install.
Repair permissions again using Disk Utility.
Perform a backup after checking all is working well.

  • After OS X Snow Leopard update. Why doesn't quick time doesn't load?

after OS X Snow Leopard update. Why doesn't quick time doesn't load?

Try installing the 10.6.8 Combo update which contains all the latest updates for that OS.  Be aware that there appears to be no further support for Snow Leopard.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4424?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Fellow user Grant Bennet-Alder offers this solution:
Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.
    Security Update 2012-004 (Snow Leopard)
If the Mail.app has been LOST, it can be re-installed by applying the 10.6.8 version 1.1 combo update. But this update is quite large and it is usually not necessary:

  • Snow Leopard update won't restart, and how do I install Lion anymore?

Two questions, but the most pressing is the first one: after reinstalling Snow Leopard on my late-2011 Macbook Pro (due to Yosemite breaking Adobe CS6), I keep getting stuck on the purply space-screen. I've read in other discussions that this is somewhat of a common problem, but I have tried reseting PRAM and NVRAM, and installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. None of this has worked. I ran disk utility and nothing came up, so in my novice understanding of these thigns I'm at a loss - any ideas? I have successfully reformatted and installed Snow Leopard on my laptop several times in the past, so this is a mystery now.
Second question: Navigating to my purchases in the Applications app, I can click on Download for Lion and Mountain Lion, but nothing happens. I tried "Option + Click" on the "Purchases" tab as that is supposedly the secret way to enable a re-download (however I don't remember having to do that a few months ago when I successfully reformatted my Macbook here). Assuming I ever solve the first issue above involving the purply-space screen, how do I upgrade to Mountain Lion (as CS6 and Rhino and Modo require it).
    Thanks everyone! Really appreciate it.

Are you certain that you have a LATE 2011 MBP/  They all came with Lion installed.  Early 2011 MBPs came with Snow leopard.
Do you have original Snow leopard installation disks that came with the MBP?
You can check by entering the serial number of the MBP (on the bottom) here:

  • MacBook Pro & Snow Leopard Update: No-Entry Symbol

    Hi Everyone,
I’ve run into some trouble as of last week involving my MacBook Pro. I feel as though this trouble may be a ressult of the 10.6.2 update, and was hoping you all could give me some advice on resolving it.
Shortly after updating to 10.6.2, I’ve been prompted with the “No Entry” symbol at startup. In other words, the Apple symbol comes up at startup, attempts to load then goes to the “No Entry” symbol.
The strange thing is, I am able to start up the computer in “Safe Mode” by holding down the shift key. This enable me to perform some of the trouble shooting steps below.
Here are some trouble shooting steps I’ve taken already:
    - Start up in Single User Mode: I was unable to start up in this mode as the single user mode refuses to start up
    - Rebuild the desktop: No effect
    - Reblessed the hard drive: No effect
    - Clear cache’s: I used the app called “Snow Leopard Cache Clear” with no effect
    - PRAM/NVRAM: I reset these with no effect
    - Disk Utility: Repair permissions and repair disk – no effect
    - Startup/Login Items: Cleared all items, no effect
The strange thing is, I’ve experience this problem when I first did the update, then it went away, and now it’s back.
I don’t believe it can be a hardware problem because the computer starts-up fine.
I do feel as though it may be linked to my Airport Express or Extreme somehow though, as I am unable to access my Airport Express & Extreme with my iPhone after this issue began.
Any tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Travis

The strange thing is, I am able to start up the computer in “Safe Mode” by holding down the shift key.
That indicates that whatever is wrong with your system involves something that is disabled by Safe Mode. Here's a list of exactly what Safe Mode does:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
    - Rebuild the desktop: No effect
How exactly did you do that? This is a troubleshooting step that applies only to Mac OS 9 and earlier, and is not relevant to Mac OS X.
    - Reblessed the hard drive: No effect
This, again, is more relevant to Mac OS 9 and earlier. Although possible on a Mac OS X system, I've never heard of reblessing as a troubleshooting tip in Mac OS X.
    - Clear cache’s: I used the app called “Snow Leopard Cache Clear” with no effect
Safe boot clears any relevant caches for you. Cache clearing beyond that is not generally necessary, despite what the makers of the various cache cleaners would have you believe.
The other things you did were good, but you didn't mention whether Disk Utility found any problems when you repaired the disk. If problems were found and repaired, that doesn't mean that any file corruption that happened as a result of those problems has gone away.
If I had to guess, I'd say that probably one or more of the optional system kext files is damaged, which would explain why Safe Mode works. That's purely a guess, though, and could easily be wrong. Unfortunately, I think that the fastest solution is to erase your hard drive and reinstall the system and all applications from scratch. There may be other troubleshooting steps that might help, but it could take days of testing and back-and-forth here to find the right ones.

  • Problem with Pages 09 after latest Snow Leopard Update

I upgraded Snow Leopard with the latest update this afternoon, and now I am having all sorts of problems with Pages. Most importantly, the Pages templates are all messed up, with formatting all screwed up and the typesetting a mess. Has anyone else experienced such problems with Pages after the update? I may have to revert back to pre-update Snow Leopard if this can't be resolved, since I use Pages for my work. Any assistance here would be appreciated!

You can install the combo over the delta (Software Update version). I did after I inadvertently used Software Update on my MacBook Pro. That's what I get for trying to update 3 Macs at one time.
Here is the link to the Mac OS 10.6.4 combo updater.

  • ISight not working after Snow Leopard update?

I just realized my iSight isnt working. I dont see it in System Profiler and I remeber prior to the Snow Leopard upgrade the iSight was working fine.  This was three months ago, since the update i never had to use it until now.  I tried resetting the SMC, I tried the command + option + p + r and still nothing.

    •  If you have not already done so, restart Mac and
try again.  If the iSight still does not work, continue.
    • If Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
suggestions do not help you, (are you certain that you
used the correct "reset" procedure?), yours may be a
hardware problem that will require a professional fix.
Unless you have a current backup, make one now.
Then consider the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion:
"... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."
    • If I understand correctly, you are now using Snow Leopard.
If you want to try one more thing on your own before
seeking professional help. use Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Then download and apply the latest Combo Update
for your OS.  The latest SL Combo Update at present is here:
         http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
    • Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
       that completes the Combo update.
Properly applying the Combo version of updates
can sometimes correct problems like yours.
