Snow Leopard upgrade causes  screen black out and freeze

I have Mac Pro (2008) 3.1 with ATI Radeon HD 2600. During the installation of the Snol Leopard my screen went black and only switch off and on worked. After the problem happened more ofter especially when the system came back from sleep mode. Again several switch off and on helped. Later the screen went black just during normal usage. I have tried to get the screen with vnc from a laptop and it worked.
On the console I have seen windowsserver erros when the screen went black. After the screen just froze and the cursor turned to a transparent square. Whole system become unresponsive. The problem came more and more often. I was so desperate that I had to reinstall 10.5 again and I do not have the problem any longer.
Any idea what the problem can be?

HI,
Boot from your install disc and check the startup disk for errors.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
Also, run the Apple Hardware Test

  • Screen blacking out and freezing when phone is charging

I have noticed sometimes my phone is blacking out and the only way to get the screen to come back up is to remove my battery. It happens about 2 or 3 times a day. Also, when charging my phone I will press an app or phone number and it goes to a completely different app or contact. Does anyone know how to fix this?

ive had an issue similar to this. my music worked for about a month then kept freezing on me. it wouldnt go back to the main screen or anything in the music player the screen just went black and my phone completely froze. however a hard reset worked for me. when you have an issue like this that can be resolved any other way this fixes it however i would use it as a last resort as a factory direct reset erases everything even backed up information on your sd card because everything is reset to the way when you first bought it out of the store. if you think this will work for you here is the quickest and easiet way i have found to do it:
    turn droid 2 off
open keyboard and press x while holding the power button
    device will power on
keep holding until a yello triangle appears
press the magnifying glass on your keyboard
use the volume button to select wipe data/ factory reset
    use camera key to confirm
    tap wipe data/factory reset
    then ok
    highlight reboot system now
    then ok

My screen blacks out and computer starts up again due to an error. Anyone any suggestions what could case this?

    Hello nattygrimm,
I was looking into the issue you are describing and found a great resource to try and fix the issue without having to re install the OS. It is an article called Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199.
    I recommend starting here:
The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account.
If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts (or choose Users if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Click "+" (or click New User if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Give the new user a name and short name.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click the Password tab, and give the user a password.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click Security.
Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user account an administrator.
Click OK, or quit System Preferences.
Work your way down the article as needed.
    All the best,
    Sterling

my ipod screen blacked out and wont let me see anything but it will play music. how can i fix it or cani get a new one?

    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
If not under warranty, Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price:

This always happens to me but recently it's happens more and more. Sometimes When I use it to game or do work or skype it will eventually black out and forze. I always have to hold my power button down to force off my Macbook pro. What is the caused of the proble and will focing off my macbook constantly spoil my mac?

In very rare cases resetting SMC has solved this problem.

  • Snow Leopard Upgrade gives a black screen

I just tried to upgrade my MacBook Pro from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard purchased from the Apple store. It shows the loading wheel then goes black. I can see the install screen if I hold a flashlight to the screen but I can't see the cursor so I have no way to click the continue button. I tried removing the Snow Leopard disc so I could at least return to the old OS but I can't reload Leopard because it goes to the black screen too.

Looks like another trip to the Monterey store is in order.

  • Frustrating Snow Leopard Upgrade Causing 'connection timeout'

WIFI problem no connection due to a connection timeout everytime i try and connect to my home wifi network (wired ethernet ok no problem).
There seems no way out from this.  Apart from downgrading back to a usable Leopard installation which I have done and tried to upgrade again.
Unfortunately i need Snow Leopard at minimum for some software to work but that knocks out my internet connection.
I have tried everything I have found.  The only thing that reliably works is to set it back in the time machine before upgrade.\\
Some bug exists in upgrading, and it remains with removing system setting plist files, adding extra network locations, altering MTU, adding dns (never even connects to router under SL. so its not hardware), repairing permissions.
    Everything else connects fine.
ANYONE HAVE ANY EXTRA INSIGHTS ?
Seems like lots of people have had this issue on upgrading to snowleopard.

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

  • Snow leopard upgrade has locked me out of gmail - can anyone help?

Yesterday I upgraded an old mac book with Snow Leopard and am now at 10.6.8. It has knocked me out of gmail. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.
    Is there a patch?

That's a curious situation, and so I have to assume you have issue with the Mail set-up in Snow Leopard after upgrading, because those settings no longer work now...? When you upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.8, did you choose to install Rosetta?
There are several support articles for all of the services Google
provides, from their main page... https://support.google.com/
For gmail in an email application, the setup is not too different now than it was a few year ago; however subject to change however often or whatever reason they want. +Their end user agreement spells it out.
•Get Started with IMAP and POP3 - Gmail Help:
    https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/1668960?rd=1
Mine is set up to use Notifier, with a second browser most often used exclusively for gmail. However notifier is sadly 'going by way of the dinosaur' by the end of this month, according to progess reports from Google.
You may have to consider a different browser, and find the last applicable Adobe Flash player plugin for OS X 10.6.8. Safari is among five browsers in my Macs, however due to some being powerPC models, there are fewer great ones left and a few get upgrades. TenFourFox, Seamonkey-PPC, and iCab seem to be OK. However for my intel-based MacBook 13" (1.83GHz coreduo) with Leopard 10.5.8, there still is a working FireFox, a different version of Seamonkey that won't work on powerPC, & iCab that is universal. In Safari preferences, you can assign another browser as default to the system.
So you could still use Gmail by web browser and on
occasion save files to .zip archive, etc for offline.
    The link to Gmail help should be of service;
or the support page for gmail for more info.
    Good luck &  happy computing!

  • Snow Leopard upgrade caused slowdown

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard on both my Macbook and iMac.  Since the upgrade, both computers are running slow providing me with a wonderful spinning beach ball to watch, and watch, and watch.  Safari and iPhoto are especially affected with iPhoto hanging up every time I click done after editing.  Many force quits have been required.  I wish I could go back.  Any solutions?

  • HT1455 Screen freaks out and freezes up

My ccmputer screen gets really messed up when I move windows black pixels get left where the window was and the screen gets real messed up to the point where it stops responding. I tried restarting and that worked for a while and then froze it up again. I tried starting it up in safe boot and it seemed to be working but once it got past the grey start-up screen it froze and the screen was black with random different colored pixel lights. I know that this isn't good is there anything I can do?

Take it to an Apple store and get them to check the hardware. Sounds like either your video card or monitor may be in need of repair

  • I am unable to take or send pictures in message.  Once I hit take a picture or video my screen blacks out and I'm thrown out of the message completely. I can only send pictures from iPhoto help!!!

HHi.  I'm unable to take and send pictures or videos from messaging.  Screen completely turns black and I'm kicked out of messaging

Try a reset by pressing and holding the home and power buttons until the white Apple logo appears.

My second issue popped up just a few days ago. I am unable to send a picture to anyone via email (gmail).  I checked to make sure MMS is enabled (it is) and I certainly have MMS provided through Verizon.
MMS has absolutely nothing to do with email.
Is this the only email account on the device? If not, are  you able to email pictures via other accounts?
Are you able to send emails with pictures attached from the gmail account on a computer?

  • Does Snow Leopard upgrade have the option to do a clean install?

If you buy the snow leopard upgrade, can you still erase and install over, say 10.4 or 10.5? If I have 10.5 can I wipe it out and just install 10.6 using the upgrade?

yes, you can. boot from the snow leopard dvd, use disk utility to erase the main hard drive and proceed with the install.
