hi hope you can help ,there is no icons on the desktop , there is no dock, there is no spotlight there is nothing when i boot into snow leopard , all my files are there and it boots to desktop normally in safe mode. but in normal mode nothing!! i tried repairing permissions and reinstalled the update again but nothing what do i need to do thanks. i up0dated with retail disk from tiger to sl thanks

As nobody has responded yet ... and you've tried a few of the default troubleshooting things.
Do you have a full backup of your system?
Prior to the snow leopard upgrade?
I don't have an immediate idea how to fix your normal user issue (besides permissions, which you did).
I see two avenues.
In safe mode, create a new user, disable auto-logon and then try to boot. It should give the log on screen. Log into that new user, see if the desktop populates and everything works. Then I'd do manual transfer of data and files from your old defective user. Time consuming and a bit delicate. But do-able.
Or - provided you have a full copy of your hard drive and data files - do what is called a clean install of Snow Leopard, erasing the hard drive, then let Snow Leopard install and when prompted use migration assistant to pull in your applications and data from the full backup drive.
If you have not done these procedures before, wouldn't hurt to read up a little.
Maybe a more experienced person can respond here with other thoughts.
Another option is to call Apple Support. If you just purchased Snow Leopard, it came with support.
Do you have extended AppleCare on the system, that could still be used?
Maybe make an appointment at the Apple Store and take your mini in?

  • Missing Spaces and Time Machine dock icons (Tiger to Snow Leopard upgrade)

I noticed on my MacBook (Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade) that it has icons for Spaces and Time Machine in the dock to the left of the divider. These are missing from the dock on my iMac that I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. They are both System Preferences with no option for adding to the dock in the Preferences and the Preference icon in "Show All" in System Preferences is not selectable. I located them in System/Library/PreferencesPane but dragging the preference pane file to the dock doesn't work. I did a Show Package Content but did not see anything in the folder that could be dragged like an application. I can put it on the right with the stacks but is there a way to add a Preference to the dock on the application side?

Time Machine is in your Applications folder and Spaces is in your Applications/Utilities folder. You can drag them to the dock from there.

  • Have upgraded to Snow Leopard. Pages icon still there but wont open, and i cant open my pages docs. Any ideas

Have upgraded to Snow Leopard. Pages icon still on dock but wont open. Also I cant view my documents. Do I have to buy Pages from ITunes? Thankyou

Good, use the disc. Also do the software updates. You can download from here http://www.apple.com/support/pages/
and you don't need the Pages 4.1/ iWork 9.1 I downgraded from iWork 9.1 to iWork 9.0.5.

  • Problems w/MS Office 2008 & Google Earth Ever Since Snow Leopard "Upgrade"

I probably should have checked this forum before taking my son's advice to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6. Ever since this upgrade, I've had repeated and frustrating problems with two applications: MS Office 2008 for the Mac and Google Earth for the Mac.
Note that I did an "in-place" upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, i.e., I inserted the installation DVD into my iMac and then double-clicked on "Install Mac OS X".
Office 2008: Ever since the Snow Leopard upgrade, MS Office 2008 has been crashing. Typically, it's Entourage crashing when a crash does occur because that's the office app that I run 95% of the time. However, whenever Entourage crashes and I try to launch Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, they won't launch either... The icons will bounce a few times in the dock but won't run. (The Entourage crash is the only Office App that actually generates a crash window.) Note that there are two identities configured on my iMac, both of which which use Entourage. The key thing about this situation is that when the Office 2008 crash does occur, restarting the iMac ALWAYS resolves the problem until the next time a crash occurs. I've tried to determine what combination of events, i.e., apps open/being used in either/both identities, etc. is the trigger, but I can't find anything obvious. Sometimes I can use the iMac for a whole day without a crash, but that's unusual. If Entourage is left open in both identities, maybe a couple of days will pass without a crash, but invariably it happens again, and then it's reboot time again. In cases where Entourage is left running (in one or both identities), we will still eventually get a crash in one of them if one of us tries to open a WinWord attachment (with a "Not enough memory to run Word" error). If at that point I close Entourage and try to restart it, it crashes. I've tried everything I could find on the Office for the Mac forums, including deleting duplicate fonts, doing a safe start-up, fixing disk permissions via Disk Utility, zapping the PRAM, turning filing sharing off then on (including deleting everything listed in the Shared Folders section), logging out/logging back in, etc., all to no avail. One of the Office 2008 for the Mac forum contributors suggested that the problem was with my Snow Leopard Install, but then a contributor to another more general Apple forum blames Office for Mac. (This is exactly the sort of finger-pointing exercise that I'd hoped to avoid when I made the plunge from being a long-time Windows user to becoming an OS X user...; - )
Google Earth: This just flat-out WILL NOT RUN ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I try to run it, it bounces in the dock for about a minute then just stops, staying fixed to the dock until I do a Force-Quit. (I don't have it permanently tethered to the dock since I only use it occasionally.) I've tried deleting/reinstalling, including Google Earth's suggestions to remove files from my identity's Google Earth folder in the Library folder, but no dice.
My take on all of this is that despite all of Apple's advertising to the contrary, their OS (including updates to their OS) isn't necessarily as trouble-free/stable as their anti-Windows spots would have you believe. Sorry for this long post, but any help would be much appreciated.

I left my system running all day in 64-bit kernel mode. (I left Entourage running the whole time.) Just now closed Entourage and tried reopening it. Same deal with Google Earth. They both crashed. Here's a screen paste of the entire Microsoft crash log for Entourage:

  • Spectacular failure of Snow Leopard upgrade

So I took my 2 week old MBP and a freshly opened family Snow Leopard upgrade media pack and started the upgrade as instructed. After the initial copying finished and it rebooted, I got stuck on the initial grey boot screen. It spent about 30-40m spinning with no status updates when I reset the laptop and ejected the disk. And, well, I'll just let this picture do the talking...
    http://www.epime.org/installfail.jpg
It appears that somehow the install activated the dvd writer and etched out about 20% of the disk. I hadn't had any problems with the one other disk I'd installed software from previously.
I'm guessing I'm going to have to replace the DVD drive but I thought I'd share. Anyone else ever have anything like this happen to them?

Same here. SuperDrive failure immediately after inserting SL install disk. Drive will not physically load anything. Even weirder - I bought an Iomega external DVD drive and when I tried to install SL I got a message saying that it could not be installed on the iMac as it is non-Intel. The problem is that it is a 2008 aluminium IntelCore Duo model! Pretty disappointing!!

  • Update Flash after doing Snow Leopard upgrade

Just as an FYI: I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6 this morning. Before the upgrade I had the latest version of Flash (10,0,32,18). After the upgrade I had an earlier one--I don't remember which one exactly, but it was something like 10,0,23,? or so. You can check your Flash version here:
    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
Anyway, be sure to update Flash after you do the Snow Leopard upgrade.

Sounds like you've damaged your system by forcing it to quit and restart in the middle of installing. You probably also had something wrong with your machine that was interfering with the installation in the first place, as the Snow Leopard installer is ordinarily pretty good at failing without damaging anything if something causes it to fail.
I would advise [repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417]. If that fails, you'll need to erase and repartition the hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard from scratch. If repair works, but you still can't boot, you probably have corruption in important system files. You could try installing Snow Leopard over it at this point, while booted from the Snow Leopard disk. If repair shows no problems, post back here, as you've got something a little more exotic than simple hard disk damage going on.
Do you have a backup? If not, it's possible all your data might be gone at this point, depending on what exactly has gone wrong with your computer. You can try to back up from Disk Utility running from the Mac OS X install disk... see the Restore tab. You'll need an external hard drive to which to copy.

  • Finder search "aliases" missing after Snow Leopard upgrade

I'm dealing with a crazy annoyance after upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard - currently running 10.6.2
I have 2 duplicate, external, 1TB WestDig Drives. I have no problems accessing these drives from the Finder, but if I use Finder search or Smart Folders, the corresponding folders on the external drives never open on the first try. I always receive the message:
+The alias “…” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found.+
On the second try, search result folders open fine and I don't seem to have any further problems with a folder once it has been opened successfully from within search.
It seems that after my Snow Leopard upgrade every search on the external drive reveals "missing" folder aliases although the "aliases" appear as regular folder icons.
I tried re-indexing Spotlight but this did not solve the problem. I also trashed my plist files for Finder and Spotlight which didn't help either.
External Drive volume info from Terminal:
    +drwxrwxr-x 21 782 Mar 14 17:18 PHOTOGRAPHY ARCHIVE+
FWIW I've found others having similar problems on the Apple forums HERE and HERE. I've tried their suggested PathFinder workaround without success.
This is driving me bonkers because it renders Smart Folders somewhat useless. Additionally, these external drives work fine on my old installation of 10.5 Leopard
    Thanks for any help!

    HI,
    Try repairing disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade fail

    Hello,
My disk utility to me that myt hard drive needed to be repaired so I decided to reformat it completely.
I also have a windows partition on the drive. After reinstalling Leopard I deleted the windows parition.
After this I started the Snow Leopard upgrade. Everything was going ok but when I went back to it the screen was dimmed so much that only a faint outline of the window can be seen. I have no idea what to do. It's been like this for over 2 hours.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    TIA Rose

If you have an aluminium keyboard, does pressing F2 (brightness up) do anything?
Otherwise, since you've just blitzed the disk, it hardly matters if you power the machine down, boot off the Snow Leopard disk, use Disk Utility from the Tools menu to blank the partition again, and do the install.
Note that you don't need to install Leopard, you can just install Snow Leopard on the disk directly.
By the way, hard disk repairs are a normal part of life, you don't need to be so drastic as to reformat! Just boot off the appropriate install DVD and run Disk Utility from the Tools menu there, and choose Repair.

  • Snow Leopard Upgrade on my lap top (tiger)

    Hi
I just upgraded my macbook (tiger OS) to snow leopard. Everything is fine until I try to access a web page thru Safari, then it tells me I am not connected to the internet. There is a excalmation mark in my Airport icon in the bar at the top. When I click on that, it tells me that airport is 'on' but then below it alerts me to no internet connection. When I click on the airport icon, the exclamation mark disappears and the icon shows a full signal, but there is still no internet connection. Then it reverts back to the exclamation mark again.
    Can anyone help?

Ok thank you for that. If I follow your line of reasoning, then the 802.11n is an old standard that is incompatible with the new snow leopard upgrade. Why then does my imac internet connection work fine? I gave it the same upgrade as the macbook- only difference was that the imac os was leopard, not tiger.Umm, I am confused because perhaps it is not the router (as the internet connection is working fine on the imac) but a setting on the macbook, is that a possibility?
o2 wireless box 2 technical specs
it is a Thomson SpeedTouch TG585v7
it uses the Broadcom 6338 ADSL chipset
the current O2 firmware version is 7.4.2.6.0

  • Will Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade mess up my SSH / VNC setup?

I have an SSH server and Vine server set up on Leopard with public key file in .ssh directory and appropriate settings in the /etc/sshd_config file. Will upgrading to Snow Leopard overwrite this requiring me to set it all up again? And how about the SSH Key Fingerprint - will this be changed by the Snow Leopard upgrade?

    >will this do anything to Office 2011, in terms of my ability to access it?
It shouldn't but it can't hurt to be careful:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
    >I have all of my important materials saved onto Dropbox
The big question is, where is the physical location of DropBox.  If it is on the same machine it is not a backup.  A backup is a separately stored location.
Time Machine shouldn't search for a wireless device unless you set it up with a Time Capsule, or connected the drive to an Airport base station which was using drive sharing at the time that Time Capsule was connected.  Time Capsules, are special wireless (WiFi, Airport) routers that include hard drives.  See my link on my user tip above (2455) which includes information about backing up.  Time Machine backups to external hard drives are back ups that are most usable if they are backups from older Macs or the same aged Macs as the ones they are being restored to.    The only problem is if the old Mac was pre-2006 in age.  Then you may need to cherry pick data out of the Time Machine backup to an Intel Mac.  Also older applications may not transfer if the were initally designed to work on pre-2006 Macs.

  • How long does it take for the Snow Leopard upgrade to download

I followed directions to download the Snow Leopard upgrade from the App Store.  How long is it supposed to take?  It has been at it with no movement on the bar for over 45 minuted.  It says downloading on the icon.  I imagine that the server(s) have been slammed but...?

(4/3)*5 = 6.666 or you have 1.666 hours to go or 1 hour and 40 mins.  At that speed you're only getting about 1Mb/s which is pretty slow.

  • Can't Print After Snow Leopard Upgrade

I have a home network centered around an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. The base station is wired to a Linksys network switch which, in turn, is wired to two computers - an Apple Dual G5 running OS X 10.4.11 and a and Mac MIni which, until yesterday was running Leopard. I have an HP Laserjet P1006 connected to the USB port of the AEBS and, until yesterday, everything worked fine. Yesterday, I ran the Snow Leopard Upgrade on my Mini and now the Mini won't print to the HP over the network. If I connect the printer directly to the MIni, it works fine; as soon as I reconnect the printer to the AEBS, the Mini will no longer print. The lights on the printer will flash but nothing comes out. I have downloaded the HP Printer driver update from Apple but this didn't help. I have reset the AEBS, to no avail. The G5 running Tiger has no problems with printing. And, my daughter just got a brand-new MacBook Pro loaded with Snow Leopard from the factory and she can print to the HP over the network without any problems.
    Any ideas?

When I upgraded iMac from Leopard to Snow Leopard 10.6 it also stopped printing wirelessly to Brother MFC6490CW.
I thought I had this same issue with my Epson printer when wireless printing. Actually, in SL, wireless printing is very slow at least with an Epson. Takes about 5 minutes or so for wireless print to even start. When checking the printing status app, it will start out saying "printer ready." Then after a few minutes it will say "looking for printer." A few minutes later it will say "printing."
When I go into the next room where the printer is, the green light is "flashing" letting me know that "printing" has started.
So I guess what I am trying to say is to check the printing status app after you click "print." It's possible "Brother" is just as slow as "Epson."

  • Can I use a German Snow Leopard upgrade for my US iMac running Leopard?

I just read that for certain Intel based iMac's it is still possible to upgrade to Maverick. I'd need to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, first, to start the process. The issue is that I'm in Germany. The German Apple site sells the Snow Leopard upgrade, but I don't know if I can use it to upgrade my US iMac (early 2008/Intel based/ running 10.5.8)? Does anybody know if there is a difference between the German and the US version?

No difference what so ever other than the printing on the media.

  • Isight no longer works after snow leopard upgrade

my isight no longer is available directly after snow leopard upgrade on my macbook black. Anyone else with the same problem? The isight does not show up in 'about this mac' under USB and I tried resetting SMC and PRAM.

    Hi,
In Leopard there was an App called iSight Update app that was in Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services
This does not seem to be there in Snow Leopard.
An issue with some computers with the camera was that in System Preferences > Displays the Colours needed to be set to Millions.
Also check the Hard Drive/System/Library/Extensions folder and see that you have the Apple_iSight.kext (this is likely to handle the Internal iSights as well).
    One last thing.
Some Web sites can make use of the camera using Flash.
If that tab is still open the Browser may have use of the camera.
It sounds like you have done computer restarts and this will not be the case unless the browser is set to go back to that page.

  • Wifi problems since 10.5.8 Update. Even after Snow Leopard Upgrade.

Wifi problems since 10.5.8 Update. Even after Snow Leopard Upgrade.
Is there any way to use a 10.5.7 wireless .kext files on Snow Leopard? And where can I find the files?

Ok, I have the fix!! After several frustrating days it finally just works.
    The process:
Upgrade your Macs to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Powercycle your modem AND time capsule / airport TWICE
Reset your time capsule with a pin or paperclip on the back
Follow the prompts to setup your time capsule / airport access
    -- On your Macs
    Go to System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced > TCP/IP
Click "Renew DHCP Lease" then click "Ok"
    Click Apply
    Turn off Airport
    Turn Airport on
    IT WORKS!!!
One of the magical people at tech support walked me through it earlier today. The whole process took about 1.5 hrs because Show Leopard takes about an hour to install on one machine.
    Hope this helps-
    Joshua
