Snow Leopard Upgrade Questions
Hello Folks,
I am a newbie to MacBooks. I just "created" two MacBooks using "donor" parts (which I affectionately call "FrankenMacs" LOL). Both MacBooks are Model A1181, late 2007-vintage with the Intel 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor and running Leopard 10.5.8. Thankfully, both work quite well :-)
I purchased a Snow Leopard "Family Pack" CD through eBay which had 4 uses left. I installed Snow Leopard, then made upgrades, on the computer I am using now and there are no issues.
I have several questions with regard to this upgrade:
First, the original hard drives were 120GB, and there were 80GB (for OSX) and 40GB NTFS (for Boot Camp/Windows) partitions on each drive. I plan on leaving the 120GB drive on one of the MacBooks and putting in a 320GB or 750GB hard drive on the other. I would like to either repartition the drive on the 120GB so the NTFS partition is much smaller, or eliminate that partition altogether. I tried changing that using the Disk Utility but it will not do it, presumably because it is the primary drive. Is there any other way I can do that? Regarding the larger drive, which was originally all NTFS format, can I install that drive (I will use Seagate Sea Tools for DOS to erase that with my Linux OS desktop computer) in the MacBook, boot it using the Snow Leopard Disc, then formatting and installing Snow Leopard? If I can, how is that done?
If I cannot install Snow Leopard with an erased drive, can I install it on another drive and clone that drive using Seagate Sea Tools for DOS? I tried cloning the 120GB drive (which had Leopard on it) to the 320GB drive, but I ended up with an 80GB partition and the remainder was NTFS. That drive booted up but, like the 120GB drive, I could not repartition or erase/eliminate the NTFS.
I would like to use the 64-bit version of Snow Leopard (according to Apple, this processor is 64-bit capable); will that install automatically, or is there something I need to do?
Finally, would it be worth my while to eventually upgrade to Lion? I don't think I can go to Mountain Lion with this MacBook, but Lion would be OK if it would be worth spending the extra quid.
Thanks so much in advance for your advice.

Will I need to install any prior version to use the upgrade using only serial numbers,
No,
or do I only need the serial numbers for the prior upgrades?
Yes
Doesn't the upgrade software need to detect an installed prior version?
No
Thanks for your help.
You're welcome

Hi,
I want to upgrade from 10.5 to Snow Leopard and am running CS4.
I have read the best way to do this is a clean install. I was wondering if I do a clean install will I have problems reinstalling Photoshop since I have not upgraded to CS5.
Also, is it really necessary to do a clean install?
Any help would be appreciated. If you do a regular upgrade it is a clean install of the OS. It doesn't refresh all your applications, drivers, add on fonts, your documents, etc. It is a complete new OS, system fonts, system software etc.
So if all of your stuff is ok you don't need a 'clean' install. I didn't do a clean install from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
The last time I felt I needed to do a clean install I did it on another drive leaving my old OS completely intact (which is a good idea to do with an upgrade also). So if something goes wrong (in the upgrade) or if you forget something (in a clean install) you are moments away from being fully operational.
But alas Im not sure any of this is what you are asking. If you are asking about the CS4 license running on a clean install I believe that you won't have any issues. -
Will Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade mess up my SSH / VNC setup?
I have an SSH server and Vine server set up on Leopard with public key file in .ssh directory and appropriate settings in the /etc/sshd_config file. Will upgrading to Snow Leopard overwrite this requiring me to set it all up again? And how about the SSH Key Fingerprint - will this be changed by the Snow Leopard upgrade?
>will this do anything to Office 2011, in terms of my ability to access it?
It shouldn't but it can't hurt to be careful:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
>I have all of my important materials saved onto Dropbox
The big question is, where is the physical location of DropBox. If it is on the same machine it is not a backup. A backup is a separately stored location.
Time Machine shouldn't search for a wireless device unless you set it up with a Time Capsule, or connected the drive to an Airport base station which was using drive sharing at the time that Time Capsule was connected. Time Capsules, are special wireless (WiFi, Airport) routers that include hard drives. See my link on my user tip above (2455) which includes information about backing up. Time Machine backups to external hard drives are back ups that are most usable if they are backups from older Macs or the same aged Macs as the ones they are being restored to. The only problem is if the old Mac was pre-2006 in age. Then you may need to cherry pick data out of the Time Machine backup to an Intel Mac. Also older applications may not transfer if the were initally designed to work on pre-2006 Macs. -
Reinstalling using the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD?
This may be a stupid question, but I need to reinstall my Mac, however I only have the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD that was shipped to me since I the leopard dvd is stuffed somewhere in the back cupboard that I can't find for love nor money.
Can I erase the hard drive and perform a clean installation from the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD? I've a feeling that I can't but just wanted to confirm.
Thanks!Hi thelongmile;
If it is the upgrade DVD then you can't.

Can't Print After Snow Leopard Upgrade
I have a home network centered around an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. The base station is wired to a Linksys network switch which, in turn, is wired to two computers - an Apple Dual G5 running OS X 10.4.11 and a and Mac MIni which, until yesterday was running Leopard. I have an HP Laserjet P1006 connected to the USB port of the AEBS and, until yesterday, everything worked fine. Yesterday, I ran the Snow Leopard Upgrade on my Mini and now the Mini won't print to the HP over the network. If I connect the printer directly to the MIni, it works fine; as soon as I reconnect the printer to the AEBS, the Mini will no longer print. The lights on the printer will flash but nothing comes out. I have downloaded the HP Printer driver update from Apple but this didn't help. I have reset the AEBS, to no avail. The G5 running Tiger has no problems with printing. And, my daughter just got a brand-new MacBook Pro loaded with Snow Leopard from the factory and she can print to the HP over the network without any problems.
Any ideas? When I upgraded iMac from Leopard to Snow Leopard 10.6 it also stopped printing wirelessly to Brother MFC6490CW.
I thought I had this same issue with my Epson printer when wireless printing. Actually, in SL, wireless printing is very slow at least with an Epson. Takes about 5 minutes or so for wireless print to even start. When checking the printing status app, it will start out saying "printer ready." Then after a few minutes it will say "looking for printer." A few minutes later it will say "printing."
When I go into the next room where the printer is, the green light is "flashing" letting me know that "printing" has started.
So I guess what I am trying to say is to check the printing status app after you click "print." It's possible "Brother" is just as slow as "Epson."

Can I use a German Snow Leopard upgrade for my US iMac running Leopard?
I just read that for certain Intel based iMac's it is still possible to upgrade to Maverick. I'd need to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, first, to start the process. The issue is that I'm in Germany. The German Apple site sells the Snow Leopard upgrade, but I don't know if I can use it to upgrade my US iMac (early 2008/Intel based/ running 10.5.8)? Does anybody know if there is a difference between the German and the US version?
No difference what so ever other than the printing on the media.

Isight no longer works after snow leopard upgrade
my isight no longer is available directly after snow leopard upgrade on my macbook black. Anyone else with the same problem? The isight does not show up in 'about this mac' under USB and I tried resetting SMC and PRAM.
Hi,
In Leopard there was an App called iSight Update app that was in Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services
This does not seem to be there in Snow Leopard.
An issue with some computers with the camera was that in System Preferences > Displays the Colours needed to be set to Millions.
Also check the Hard Drive/System/Library/Extensions folder and see that you have the Apple_iSight.kext (this is likely to handle the Internal iSights as well).
One last thing.
Some Web sites can make use of the camera using Flash.
If that tab is still open the Browser may have use of the camera.
It sounds like you have done computer restarts and this will not be the case unless the browser is set to go back to that page.

Wifi problems since 10.5.8 Update. Even after Snow Leopard Upgrade.
Is there any way to use a 10.5.7 wireless .kext files on Snow Leopard? And where can I find the files?Ok, I have the fix!! After several frustrating days it finally just works.
The process:
Upgrade your Macs to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Powercycle your modem AND time capsule / airport TWICE
Reset your time capsule with a pin or paperclip on the back
Follow the prompts to setup your time capsule / airport access
-- On your Macs
Go to System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced > TCP/IP
Click "Renew DHCP Lease" then click "Ok"
Click Apply
Turn off Airport
Turn Airport on
IT WORKS!!!
One of the magical people at tech support walked me through it earlier today. The whole process took about 1.5 hrs because Show Leopard takes about an hour to install on one machine.
Hope this helps-

Problems w/MS Office 2008 & Google Earth Ever Since Snow Leopard "Upgrade"
I probably should have checked this forum before taking my son's advice to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6. Ever since this upgrade, I've had repeated and frustrating problems with two applications: MS Office 2008 for the Mac and Google Earth for the Mac.
Note that I did an "in-place" upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, i.e., I inserted the installation DVD into my iMac and then double-clicked on "Install Mac OS X".
Office 2008: Ever since the Snow Leopard upgrade, MS Office 2008 has been crashing. Typically, it's Entourage crashing when a crash does occur because that's the office app that I run 95% of the time. However, whenever Entourage crashes and I try to launch Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, they won't launch either... The icons will bounce a few times in the dock but won't run. (The Entourage crash is the only Office App that actually generates a crash window.) Note that there are two identities configured on my iMac, both of which which use Entourage. The key thing about this situation is that when the Office 2008 crash does occur, restarting the iMac ALWAYS resolves the problem until the next time a crash occurs. I've tried to determine what combination of events, i.e., apps open/being used in either/both identities, etc. is the trigger, but I can't find anything obvious. Sometimes I can use the iMac for a whole day without a crash, but that's unusual. If Entourage is left open in both identities, maybe a couple of days will pass without a crash, but invariably it happens again, and then it's reboot time again. In cases where Entourage is left running (in one or both identities), we will still eventually get a crash in one of them if one of us tries to open a WinWord attachment (with a "Not enough memory to run Word" error). If at that point I close Entourage and try to restart it, it crashes. I've tried everything I could find on the Office for the Mac forums, including deleting duplicate fonts, doing a safe start-up, fixing disk permissions via Disk Utility, zapping the PRAM, turning filing sharing off then on (including deleting everything listed in the Shared Folders section), logging out/logging back in, etc., all to no avail. One of the Office 2008 for the Mac forum contributors suggested that the problem was with my Snow Leopard Install, but then a contributor to another more general Apple forum blames Office for Mac. (This is exactly the sort of finger-pointing exercise that I'd hoped to avoid when I made the plunge from being a long-time Windows user to becoming an OS X user...; - )
Google Earth: This just flat-out WILL NOT RUN ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I try to run it, it bounces in the dock for about a minute then just stops, staying fixed to the dock until I do a Force-Quit. (I don't have it permanently tethered to the dock since I only use it occasionally.) I've tried deleting/reinstalling, including Google Earth's suggestions to remove files from my identity's Google Earth folder in the Library folder, but no dice.
My take on all of this is that despite all of Apple's advertising to the contrary, their OS (including updates to their OS) isn't necessarily as trouble-free/stable as their anti-Windows spots would have you believe. Sorry for this long post, but any help would be much appreciated.I left my system running all day in 64-bit kernel mode. (I left Entourage running the whole time.) Just now closed Entourage and tried reopening it. Same deal with Google Earth. They both crashed. Here's a screen paste of the entire Microsoft crash log for Entourage:

Snow Leopard - Bento 2.0v5 - Lost record data on Snow Leopard Upgrade
Any thoughts on this one: After an update to Snow Leopard 10.6 and 10.6.1, the data entered in Bento fields associated with contact names in Address Book are no longer available (only 10 of 300 or more records are still available) In addition, the categories associated with names in Address Book have no records in the associated categories in Bento. Further, this problem exists for all of my backup copies of Bento. (i.e. it appears the only way to go recover this might be to go back to a full computer backup recovery from prior to 10.6. I hypothesis that the links between individual records in Bento and Address Book have somehow become corrupted or broken. Therefore the data may well exist in Bento but it is not retrievable. This could be because Bento might believes incorrectly that the original AddressBook record was deleted. Just to confuse things a bit, another possible source of the problem may be because AddressBook is synchronized with other computers and Google. However, post my upgrades to 10.6, all these other accounts were download from the main computer on which Bento resides. A minor Address Book - Mail bug is possibly related. That is that when I "add to Address Book" by ctl-clicking an email address in Mail, this email address apparently added but it is often not found in Address Book. At times it comes shows up later but often it just disappears entirely.
I have gotten a little closer to the problem. It appears that the update to SnowLeopard is not the problem. Rather syncing might be the culprit. I sync AddressBook with MobileMe and Google. The latter was as addition immediately after the Snow Leopard upgrade. I did clean out the GMail address book prior to syncing. Recently, I noticed some duplicate records in AddressBook. Some at least had two middle initials with periods. It appears there is a different format for this cell in the two systems. In one record they showed with no space and in the other with a space between the first period and the second letter.
I was able to recover my AddressBook data. All the records had an update date from my first syncing after adding GMail. The old records had a mix of dates. I just went back to the date with mixed dates. After recovering the records and turning off syncing, Bento is working just fine and all old data is displayed.

Hello,
I want to purchase Snow Leopard (upgrade version) but I was planning on doing a format when installing it.
Is it possible?
Thank you!cocoazenith wrote:

Yes, the 10.6.3 white retail disk can upgrade 10.5 to 10.6 via the installer, but you can also hold c or option key down while booting from the disk and use Disk Utility to Erase and then install 10.6 fresh.
Naturally all programs and user file will be removed, so you need to backup files first and take stock of your programs that will have to be reinstalled again from original sources.
To get the white 10.6.3 disk, call Apple via the phone, it's not sold online anymore, or search Amazon.com or amc related websites for the disk.
Most commonly used backup methods
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
However if you choose to upgrade over 10.5, keeping your programs and files (backup files regardless) intact and it proceeds just fine, but want to improve the performance, you can use this method
How to properly defrag a Mac's hard drive
If your upgrading from 10.5 to get to 10.7 or 10.8, I don't advise it. Software Update to 10.6.8 max and stay there, your machine is too old.

Missing Spaces and Time Machine dock icons (Tiger to Snow Leopard upgrade)
I noticed on my MacBook (Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade) that it has icons for Spaces and Time Machine in the dock to the left of the divider. These are missing from the dock on my iMac that I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. They are both System Preferences with no option for adding to the dock in the Preferences and the Preference icon in "Show All" in System Preferences is not selectable. I located them in System/Library/PreferencesPane but dragging the preference pane file to the dock doesn't work. I did a Show Package Content but did not see anything in the folder that could be dragged like an application. I can put it on the right with the stacks but is there a way to add a Preference to the dock on the application side?
Time Machine is in your Applications folder and Spaces is in your Applications/Utilities folder. You can drag them to the dock from there.

Problem
High running Temperature
Specification
iMac 27 inch
Mac OS X Includes Software Snow Leopard upgraded to Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.03 (1278)
251 GB Flash Drive
2 TB Sata disk
Processor 3.4 Ghz Intel Core I7
Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970 2048 MB
Video: Software Final Cut Pro X 10.0.8
I use the imac mainly for editing Video which when doing so it has reached temperatures of near to 60° C which causes the program to become unstable and needs to be cooled down to operate correctly.
An Apple technician (by phone) advised me to download an smcfancontrol. This allows each individual fan to increase speed and also advises the current temperature at °C. The smcfancontrol has been downloaded but this has not resolved the problem. By increasing the speed of the fan more heat is generated and creates additional noise.
I have since taken the iMac to an Apple Store for examination as suggested by APPLECARE when the fans were found to be working correctly. An Apple Store technician carried out a test, but not whilst working under the pressure of FINAL CUT PRO when the iMac generates a high temperature.
The Temperature Specification for this model is
Operating Temperature 20 °c to 35°C
Storage Temp.47°c
Clearly the temperature my iMac is operating at is excessive and could cause the computer to break down prematurely. Has anyone experienced this problem.
Frank HowellWhen was the last time you cleaned/vacuumed out all of your iMac's vents, slots and ports.
You need to do this with the iMac powered down, disconnected from power and everything disconnected.
Lay your iMac, screen down, on a soft surface, like a heavy towel. Use a small electronics vac, or portable or full size vac with hose and a crevice tool attachment and carefully and slowly vacuum every vent, slot and port on your iMac.
Then reconnect everything up, power up and download and install iStat Pro. Start working, then report the temps of your iMac after this has been done.
When using SMCFan Control, it is important not to run the fans at too high an RPM. This doesn't generate heat on its own, but will suck in more dust, lint and dirt into your iMac, and that will be the cause of additonal increases in heat.
I run my fans in the range of 1400-1600 RPMs. You can go as high as 1800 RPMs but it is important to keep the RPM range below either 1800 or below 2000 RPMs.
I, also, run a very small desktop fan pointed toward the upper back of my iMac to keep temps down even further. -
I purchased the Mac OS X Snow Leopard upgrade. I put the CD in my MacBook and it spits it back out. What should I do?
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

PS3 and Safari crashes after Snow Leopard upgrade
How is everyone enjoying the crashes after their Snow Leopard upgrade? I can't save a photo using PS3, or download a photo to flickr or facebook without a crash. PS3 crashes, Safari crashes and work flow is at a crawl? Spoke with tech yesterday and they told me that this would stop if I downloaded Snow Leopard again, which I did, but the problem wasn't resolved. To top it off, I lost permissions on the iMac and can't use the computer. Please tell me where all of the accolades came from? Were the reviews done by people who actually work on their computers or by people who play on them? Oh, and another thing, lost my wireless access to the router and had to start all over. Be careful here, this has not been fun!
Excuse me, I meant to write CS3 instead of PS3.
