Snow Leopard - very slow restart / reboot and Boot Camp restart fail

Hi
After Snow Leopard installation on my Macbook Pro I have a very slow restart. I logged this immediately after install and waited till 10.6.1 was issued and installed but still have the same problems. Hope some one can help.
For an normal restart or reboot I have the grey screen for about 25 secs and then the blue screen hangs for about 2 mins 30 secs before loading desktop. This is longer than Leopard and clearly not what Snow Leopard is meant to be. I have installed on an iMac as well and can see the new normal fast boot.
I also have Windows on it's own partition and use in Boot Camp. I have used this successfully under Leopard.
When I restart from Windows using the Start button and restart, Windows shuts down and then the mac starts up but gets stuck indefinitely on the blue screen. I have waited up to 25 mins then forced a shut down.
However if I restart from Windows using the Boot Camp icon in the taskbar and choose the restart from MacOSX it shuts down windows and restarts the mac in record time!! about 25 secs grey screen and 25 secs blue screen. I can't get this in normal mac mode! - Bizarre.
I have run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, run Tech Tool, Onyx, reset PRAM, deleted startup items plists and removed startup items from System Preferences Account.
I have monitored the Console app for all the startup conditions noted above and will post below. In the logs of the normal mac reboot you can see something to do with Security Agent taking over 2 mins to load. Maybe that is a clue, but I don't understand these messages. Please note that the iStatsmenu app was installed after snow leopard and I had these slow startups before it's installation.
If anyone technical can understand what the **** is going on here I would really appreciate your feedback.
Regards
Eric

Hi guys
Thanks for your contributions. I have made little progress on this issue since posting.
Just as added info, I did a re-install of Snow leopard from install DVD and upgrade again to 10.6.1 and no change to the startup behaviours. Same pattern as before, although the first restart was fast and probably how it is meant to be, then the slow ones reappeared.
I also had a thought that somehow it may be related to the nominated startup disk. There were posts on other boards about similar issues with Leopard where the hanging start was found to be related to the computer not knowing which startup disk to use. I thought maybe as it works when using the boot camp icon from Windows but not the restart button, it may be related, but in OSX and Windows both are set to startup in OSX on HD. So no further joy.
Maybe someone else will come along who can understand the Console logs. Why does the loginwindow and Security Agent take so long?
Do you guys have any clues from your Console system logs? Does yours hang on loginwindow?
The fact that there are so few people with the same problem suggests to me that there is a third party device/preference/ hidden file somewhere that is having an effect and it's not an Apple issue.
I am getting close to wiping the hard drive and starting again....but live in hope.
Cheers

  • Snow Leopard very slow to boot

I have an older Macbook with a 2.16Ghz Intel core duo processor 2Gb 667 DDR2 SDRAM and a 120Gb HD (111 Gb free)
I have just installed Snow Leopard over Tiger from DVD.  After the install the boot-up time was 15mins!  After backing everything up I repartioned the drive and did a clean install, the boot-up time is now 10mins!
Once up and running the computer is fine, everything work as expected, although I have not yet installed any other software so it is currently "factory fresh".
I've checked the HD (as best I can) and can find no errors, it runs quietly without abnormal vibration etc. and disk utility reports it as fine.
Can anyone sugest what the problem is?  10 minutes to boot up cannot be normal, my old 1986 Amstrad, booting from a floppy drive, only took a minute to boot so I'm sure that Apple could beat that.

It is unlikely that Apple would put the Combo update version in Software update. You have always had to go looking for it.
I suggest you first go to the Apple Logo > About this Mac and tell us what version of Snow Leopard is installed and how much RAM (memory) you have.
IF ...  you have 10.6.0 to 10.6.3 then you have the basic Snow Leopard.  That would need updating using the 10.6.8 Combo updater followed by Software Update as many as show (probably 4 or 5 to include security and iTunes updates).
At this point you will also have the App Store.
This is a big update and could take half an hour or more, time that has no connection with the current slowness you are experiencing.
    OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Then, providing you have more than 1GB of RAM you should see an improvement. but in reality, you could do with 4GB.

  • Slow restart - blue screen BSOD and Boot Camp restart issue

After Snow Leopard install on Macbook Pro I have experienced a very slow startup and restart. The grey apple screen appears for about 25 secs and then the blue screen hangs for 2mins and 2 secs. Also when restarting from Boot Camp blue screen just stays and restart fails. I waited approx 25 mins and blue screen was still there. I have searched Console system log for clues but am not technically adept. hopefully someone can help. I have copied log below form recent restart (in OSX mode, not boot camp). My Windows Boot camp volume is called ERICGLPC and I can see some issue on the log but unsure what it means.

  • Snow leopard (10.6.8) cursor and boot problems

Hi all, I have a very odd thing going on with my old white 24" iMac. It crashed the other day and since then has had real issues booting up. In fact, the only way to start it was in safe mode. I have re-installed Snow Leopard twice and the restart issue keeps coming back... A seemingly related bug is that the mouse cursor has these weird row and columns of black bits attached to it - I also seem to have to reinstall my Wacom driver everytime the bug returns. I have checked for viruses and found nothing, repaired disk and nothing.. still same issues...
    Cursor looks like this...
Anyone any ideas? RAM issue? Hardware failure???
I have removed KVM and Wacom from the mac and it still has the issue.... reset PRAM no difference.... run out of ideas!!! anyone!????!!!??!?!?
The original bug happened when using 10.6.8 now still persists in fresh install of 10.6 after many re-installs. I have not tried a restore from time machine backup yet or erased the disk as I was hoping not to have to loose all the stuff on the hard drive...
    Any ideas?

As a novice if I were you I would just purchase Mountain Lion and run the installer. You're going to get in a bit over your head with making a bootable ML installer disk. Realize that you will need to erase your hard drive and without a back up your files are gone.

  • Snow Leopard - Very Slow - Corruption?

    Hello:
I'm using a Mac Mimi with Snow Leopard 6.8.     For the past day or so, it has been working very slow.
The Applications & Browsers (Firefox & Safari) have been slow to launch.
When I open the Application folder, the application Icons have been slow to load.
I ran Disk Verify and it told me there was a corruption and to run Disk Repair from the Install DVD
    which I did.
After doing this, I ran Repair Permissions and it showed numerious files within Libarary that
    were repaired.
This is now the second time in the past 3 months this has happened.
Can anyone give me some idea/suggestion as to what might be going on here?
    Thanks.

Here's somthing very interesting, it may have been the Mouse.  We have been using the
Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse for several years now, in fact we are now on our third one in
the past 10 years and have never had any problems.
Well, just for the heck of it, I switched to the the extra mouse we have for my wife's laptop, it
is a Logitech Basic Optical Mouse, I went to the Logitech site and downloaded the control
panel for Mac after making a few adjustments in the control panel, this mouse seems to be
working fine.  Now, everything I click on is loading and working normally.
It is very hard to believe, that all the problems may have been caused by a mouse going bad.
We well of course continue the monitor everthing to make sure, but hopefully as simple as this
may have turned out to be - it seems just so silly to have gone through all the other tests only
to have it turn out to be the mouse.

  • Macbook pro  snow leopard 10.6.3 does not boot up. I get a grey screen and a pop up to restart computer

Snow leopard 10.6.3 does not boot up. Macbook pro. When I push the start button I hear a chime and then the apple logo shows up and the spinnings circle. In a little while a grey screen comes on and  after that a pop up telling me to shut down and restart my computer.I have done that andit still does not work. How do I fix it.?
    richardfromfort pierce

    richardfromfortpierce,
do you or don’t you have your MacBook Pro’s original grey installation DVDs?
If your MacBook Pro is a 2007 model, then Mac OS X 10.6.3 was not installed onto your MacBook Pro from its grey installation DVDs, but rather from a white Snow Leopard DVD. The white Snow Leopard DVD does not have any Apple Hardware Test; to run your Apple Hardware Test, you will need the grey installation DVDs which originally came with your MacBook Pro when it was new. If you no longer have those grey discs, you can contact Apple directly and purchase a replacement pair. (They’re not available in the Apple stores.)

What is a error message and what do you see when it appears?
Haven't much problem with Airs around here, since they have a SSD they tend to be more reliable.
Perhaps it was a bad update, have you ran through this list of possible fixes?
Do as many as possible, starting with #1. Until the problem is resolved.
Use the boot 10.6 USB instead of the disk of course.

  • Snow Leopard is slow on my mac mini

I think snow leopard is slower than leopard on my mac mini. What is the matter?
    (excuse me for my english)

I'm finding the same effect on my Mac Mini (just a few months old).
My Mac Book Pro is actually noticeable faster with Snow Leopard, but the Mac Mini is 10 times slower than it was with Leopard - barely usable at all.
My Mac Mini is 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1GB Ram.
I've checked the activity monitor and othing seems to be hogging the CPU or using up the RAM. I did try to boot into 64 bit kernel, but it didn't seem to work (once I unlocked the firmware).
    ... Fixed! ...
Now my Mac Mini works blindingly fast again. Not sure how I fixed it, but could be a combination of removing all GPG traces, stopping EyeTV helper from starting up and trying many times to boot into 64 bit kernel (but never succeeded).
(Also removed GeekTool and Secrets preference panes).
Also, since the firmware was unlocked I got a Mac Mini Firmware update (to 1.2), so maybe that helped.

  • I'm attempting to install snow leopard on my 2008 Imac and it stops installing less than 1/4 way through?

I'm attempting to install Snow Leopard on my 2008 Imac and before it 1/4 way done installing, it ejects the disc and restarts the computer.  Is there something I am doing wrong?

    See:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • How do I install Snow Leopard while keeping files, applications, and settings

I need to update my system, I realized that I need Snow Leopard (quiet late) before Maverick. My question is, how can I install it keeping files and all the data. I found this on Internet, does it work?
Install Snow Leopard while keeping files, applications, and settings
If you follow these steps, the installer will replace your operating system if one is already present, but will preserve your account information and personal files.  You may have to reinstall some applications, however.
Insert the install disc (or the first install disc if you have more than one) into your disc drive. Restart your computer while holding down the c key. This causes your computer to start up from the install disc rather than your hard drive. When you see the gray Apple insignia, release c .
The Mac OS X installer should open automatically. Follow the on-screen prompts to read and accept the license agreement and begin the installation. When prompted to choose a destination disk, select your preferred location and click Install.
When the Mac OS X installation finishes with the disc, restart your computer. After the installation completes, a configuration program may begin automatically if you are installing for the first time. You will need to supply basic setup information for your computer.
Update your system software to ensure that you have the most recent operating system components.  From the Apple menu, select Software Update... , and then follow the instructions on the screen. Often, you will have to restart your computer, and you may have to run Software Update multiple times before it can completely update your system.

That's why you need to back it up. You won't need to restore the backup immediately afterwards unless something goes wrong during the upgrade, but you'll need it later; the drive will eventually fail.

hi all. When pressed play and make some changes in loop (eg fade in fade out) are very slow to implement, and also the loops from the library are very slow to play, corrects the somewhat self so is the Logic??

    Hey there Logic Pro21,
It sounds like you are seeing some odd performance issues with Logic Pro X. I recommend these troubleshooting steps specifically from the following article to help troubleshoot what is happening:
    Logic Pro X: Troubleshooting basics
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5859
Verify that your computer meets the system requirements for Logic Pro X
See Logic Pro X Technical Specifications.
Test using the computer's built-in audio hardware
If you use external audio hardware, try setting Logic Pro X to use the built-in audio hardware on your computer. Choose Logic Pro X > Preferences > Audio from the main menu and click the Devices tab. Choose the built in audio hardware from the Input Device and Output Device pop-up menus. If the issue is resolved using built-in audio, refer to the manufacturer of your audio interface.
Start Logic with a different project template
Sometimes project files can become damaged, causing unexpected behavior in Logic. If you use a template, damage to the template can cause unexpected results with any project subsequently created from it. To create a completely fresh project choose File > New from Template and select Empty Project in the template selector window. Test to see if the issue is resolved in the new project.
Sometimes, issues with the data in a project can be repaired. Open an affected project and open the Project Information window with the Project Information key command. Click Reorganize Memory to attempt to repair the project. When you reorganize memory, the current project is checked for any signs of damage, structural problems, and unused blocks. If any unused blocks are found, you will be able to remove these, and repair the project. Project memory is also reorganized automatically after saving or opening a project.
    Delete the user preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
    Press the Go button.
Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
If you have upgraded from an earlier version of Logic Pro, you should also remove~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.
    Restart the computer.
Isolate an issue by using another user account
For more information see Isolating an issue by using another user account.
    Reinstall Logic Pro X
Another approach you might consider is reinstalling Logic Pro X. To do this effectively, you need to remove the application, then reinstall Logic Pro X. You don't have to remove everything that was installed with Logic Pro X. Follow the steps below to completely reinstall a fresh copy of Logic Pro X.
In the Finder, choose Applications from the Go menu.
Locate the Logic Pro X application and drag it to the trash.
    Open the Mac App Store
Click the Purchases button in the Mac App Store toolbar.
Sign in to the Mac App Store using the Apple ID you first used to purchase Logic Pro X.
Look for Logic Pro X in the list of purchased applications in the App Store. If you don't see Logic Pro X in the list, make sure it's not hidden. See Mac App Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases for more information.
Click Install to download and install Logic Pro X.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Open and Save Dialogs Very Slow to Open and Populate

In all of my apps, the Open and Save dialogs have become +very slow+ to open and populate since installing Snow Leapoard.
This only happens on one of my machines, and not others. (I've unmounted all connected drives, just to eliminate that possibility.)
Any thoughts on what this could be. The delay is significant (and feels like the old days of Windows, which I thought I'd left behind).

The problem now appears to have gone away. The only change I've made is that I replaced an external drive that had recently died with a new one and gave it the same name as the failed drive.
Could a the dead drive have left something behind (or failed to leave something behind) that is stumbled over (or looked for and not found) each time the file system was accessed, and that got cleaned up (or re-created) when the new drive was connected and renamed?

  • Just purchased a ipad2, could not us it on my MacBook 10.4.1 - Purchased and installed OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.3 - downloaded and installed latest itunes, set up a itunes accounts and tested by purchasing an album and app, ipad does not show in devises?

I just purchased a ipad2, it would not work on my MacBook 10.4.1 I purchased and installed OSX snow leopard 10.6.3 downloaded and installed the latest itunes, set up an itunes account, purchased some music and apps.  When i plug in my ipod it shows up and works, but when i plug in my new ipad the ipad screen comes up with a display of a cable and itunes but does not show in devises, i have tried all the resets and different USB ports with no success.  Any ideas short of selling it on ebay or buying a new computer?

If you've already tried the usual rebooting of the computer and ports and stuff, there is only a few things left I can think of. It's possible that when you updated iTunes it didn't fully replace all the files, so I suggest just manually removing iTunes and then reinstalling it.
Try removing iTunes manually first http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224 then download a fresh copy, make sure it is 10.3.1
It is essential that you go through Finder to remove those files it mentions. Otherwise they won't be reinstalled when you run the installer again.

  • Snow Leopard FAQ - what's known, and what's not.

Can I speculate about its features on this board? Absolutely not!
Wait till the official release date has past, and find out if someone has found the answer to your question about it then.
When will Snow Leopard be released? Some time in September 2009.
Will it work on PowerPC Macs (G3, G4, G5)? No.
Will it work on CoreDuo and CoreSolo Macs (the first generation of Intel Macs)? Yes.
Will new Macs released after it come with it? Yes.
How much hard disk space is needed? 5GB (approximately 5120 MB).
What kind of optical drive will boot it? DVD.
How much physical RAM do I need? 1 GB.
What features won't work on minimal Intel Macs? The 1.5 Ghz Intel CoreSolo
and CoreDuo won't support interlacing on DVD playback. H.264 needs NVIDIA 9400M graphics processor. Developer Tools need 1 GB of memory and an additional 3 GB of hard disk space. CoreDuo and CoreSolo Macs are not 64 bit, and will only use 32 bit functions. Core2Duo is 64 bit. Core2Duo and Xeon processors also when an Airport card is present either have built-in 802.11n support, or a small paid upgrade will add 802.11n support. OpenCL needs: NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GTS, Geforce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130, ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870.
What's the U.S. pricing? For existing Leopard users, $29.95, for existing Tiger uesrs the Mac Box Set including iLife '09 is needed, for users who bought their qualifying Mac after June 8, 2009, $9.95. It comes free with new Macs purchased after Snow Leopard's release.
Will new Macs released after Snow Leopard run Leopard or Tiger? That is not known at this time. All other Macs in the past have followed a history of only running the operating system present at that time as new, including any updates. This means if you aren't sure that your software is made compatible with Snow Leopard, wait until it is before buying a new Mac after Snow Leopard's release, or wait until this is made clearer after Snow Leopard's release. Used and refurbished Macs will always be available that can run older operating systems. Ask on this board if you need help finding a reputable store for them, or identifying models on Apple's special deals that will run an operating system you need.

CS4 File info dialog very slow to open and respond. Every click or or key stroke takes more than 1 second to record. I have try multiple changes in the performance preferences and nothing has an affect. This is the only dialog box in the program that has the problem. The problem started when I uninstalled and reinstalled because of problems with the program freezing. I have changed every setting in the preferences performance section back and forth including 3 different amounts of memory usage (lo hi and recommended) restarting PS every time and nothing works. I would appreciate any help, keeping in mind that there have been no changes to the PC and it worked fine for a long time (approx 1/12 years) previous to the reinstall.
