Snow Leopard vs FCE 3.5

Is anyone running Final Cut Express 3.5 with Snow Leopard? Upgrading from Tiger OS this week.
Successful/Unsuccessful? Compatible/Incompatible?

Do #2 above.
• Uninstall FCE 3.5
• Back up all of your existing data (folders, files) that are on your hard drive. At least the stuff you really need to keep.
• Install Snow Leopard (make sure you did that backup first !!)
• Install FCE 4 from the upgrade disk. Do not install FCE 3.5 first. You only need the serial number from FCE 3.5 (or whatever previous version was the original, retail version you have). You will be asked to enter the original serial number + the FCE 4 upgrade serial number during the installation.
• Be sure to install FCE while logged into an administrator account ... and run it at least once in that account before you run it in any other account on your Mac

Am running 3.5 and in the middle of a project.
Snow Leopard was installed on my computer and am now having all kinds of problems with FCE.
If I install FCE 4 is that going to cause problems with current project? What about uninstalling Snow Leopard?

Yes, have Mac OSX v10.5 something. . . .Leopard, I think it is. Of course, now it's Snow Leopard and QT10.
The preference around here is to stay with Snow Leopard, get FCE4 and hope I can update the project. Even if I have to reconstruct the project, it's not the end of the world. I've saved the media (title created in Live Type, etc) and didn't get too far with it yet.
My real question is FCE4. I'm happy as a clam with 3.5. Is 4 OK? I've not done much research about it.

FCE problem with Snow Leopard

I upgraded when it came out and have been have trouble ever since. I did not do the clean install, which would more than likely fix the problem but I don't want to resort to that just yet because I've got a few programs which I don't have the install disks anymore, and I've also got a big project in the works (feature film) and I don't want to risk losing anything... I know, I shouldn't have even upgraded in the middle of such a big project.
The problem is that FCE freezes up ALOT. It makes it very difficult to get a decent editing session going. It does the thing where the audio keeps going but the video freezes, and I can't stop it til it stops on its own. When I try to stop it I just get the color wheel. Sometimes it helps to restart FCE, or restart the computer but sometimes it doesn't.
I reinstalled Snow Leopard 3 days ago and it first it seemed to take care of the problem but now its at it again. I've got a brother with an identical computer (editing the same feature with me) who also upgraded from the same disc (family package) and he hasn't had a single problem.
I've talked to Apple and they recommend reinstalling FCE, then doing the clean install as a last resort. Is there anything else I can try first before going to the extreme measures? Maybe adjust my render or playback settings?

Reinstalling FCE is a simple way to solve a such problem, but trashing preferences files worth a try:

Fce and snow leopard

Just got snow leopard and my fce 4.0.1 spins every time I try to play my project, no matter where I open it from. Help- I heard of fcp rescue, is there such a thing for fce?

one of the major advantages of going 10.5 >> 10.6 was, that you don't have to save all your 'belongings' to some ext.HDD and make a 'clean install' (as NT >>Windows7 demands.. ).
I updated without erasing .. worked like charm, incl. FCE4 ..

Export from FCE extremely slow after Snow leopard install

Instead of increasing my export times from FCE Snow Leopard has made them slower by a factor of ten. It is taking an hour to convert 3 minutes of 1080i to 720p !!!!! On an 8 core machine !!!
I am exporting 1080i to 720p with a bitrate of about 2000 for uploads to Utube. I tried using QT10 for export but I am not happy with the loss of control over my exports, it does work but not directly from FCE. The process called by QT10 is very fast and uses all 8 cores, but that process is not being called by FCE.
So at this point I wish I had never gone for the upgrade.
Lots of crashes with QT 7 during the open file dialogue and also same problem with MPEGStream Clip crashing on the file open dialogue as well after this OS upgrade

I may not be having a snow leopard problem at all.
Going back to an old project in 1080i of an 8 minute length. the estimated time to render is about 50 minutes it says @20% of the way thru. Thats about 6x real time.
Maybe thats what I should expect. I was hoping for a significant speed increase in rendering times with the new OS. What is teh factor averaging for other people ?
I am rendering down to 720p multi pass 2320 kbit rate .MP4 in h.264
Maybe I have a settings problem in project properties in my other project.
I also got inspired and moved the render folders to a separate disk from the source files and put the caches on a 3rd drive. my I/O readings now are at 60 reads/sec.

FCE version 3.5 compatible with Snow Leopard?

I have a new Mac Pro running OS 10.6.2. Does anyone know whether Final Cut Express (version 3.5) is compatible with Snow Leopard? I really like that this version has Live Type and Soundtrack, which is why I want to install it, instead of upgrading to version 4. Thanks.

I believe FCE4 is technically the only version supported by Apple for use with Snow Leopard. (I'm sure Tom will correct me if I'm wrong!) That being said, many people have found that it still works.
If you upgrade to FCE4, the projects from the old version will work fine. However, you will not be able to open any FCE4 projects in your old FCE3.5 (you probably wouldn't want to anyway).

Problems with snow leopard, labtop, desktop, and final cut 4.0.1

Hello - I was in the apple store awhile ago to have my Mac OS X 10.6.5 worked on. They updated the operating system to snow leopard 10.6. When we got back we reinstalled Final Cut Express, which I have been using on my laptop Mac OS X 10.5.8. I use an external hard drive to store all my videos that I work on for people, and I like to be able to either work on the laptop or my desktop. I hooked my hard drive to the desktop, and tried to open up files I have been working on my laptop, and it says. Files format is too new for this version of the application. Then I take a FCE video that I have been working on my desktop, and try to open it up on the laptop, and it says. File format of this project is from an earlier version. Would you like to update this project file. I say yes, and it says the files are offline. I don't know what to do to make these compatible. They are both FCE 4.0.1. The only difference is the new operating system. Thanks for your help. ~Nancy

what aja playout options do you have from fcp, as i'm looking at my knona lhe which is feeding a panasonic BT broadcast monitor and all the aja playout settings are 10bit, 8bit or rgba. it goes sdi out of the mac.
dvcproHD video playback is normally just for sending out via firewire isn't it??
what are the inputs on the monitor and which version of aja control panel are you using??

Transparent PNG not working in Snow Leopard w Final Cut 3.5&4

I recently changed from a G5 mac to a Mac Pro. I had FCE HD 3.5 which supposedly is not supported in Snow leopard..although it did work.
Anyways, when dragging a PNG or PICT image to the base video layer, then dragging a transparent background(white)character image to a layer on top of that...I remember when i was in Macos X Tiger with FCE 3.5, after selecting the top layer and setting composite mode to SCREEN.. it would perfectly make the white background transparent. Awesome..
Well that hasn't worked since i switched to Snow leoplard. I thought it was a problem because i had FCE 3.5 so i bought FCE 4 yesterday
So i decided to upgrade and still doesn't work.
Instead of getting a transparent BG.. the top video layer where i placed the PNG image of a character with a white bg still has the white bg..and the inside of the character is semi transparent..
not what i want.
I even tried the new feature in FCE 4 where you go to Modify and Sepect ALPHA white. and that didn't work either.
What's going on.. ONly specific PNG formats have transparency in FCE???
By the way I'm exporting PNG out of a 3D program called DAZ Studio 3.That program doesn't have the ability to export as Animation CODEC( like in poser)or any other codec for that matter. it only exports movies as MOV or image series PNG or single PNG images.

Here is a correctly formated PNG file with transparency.
You can download it to test in your sequence by Control-Clicking and selecting "Download Linked File As . . ." from the drop down menu [HERE|http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/Test.png]
You simply need to place it on a video track above any other clip to see if the effect works or not.
Please post if this graphic works for you.

AVCHD and Snow Leopard (I-Movie / Final Cut Express)

AVCHD and Snow Leopard. I have been using Final Cut Express 4 and I-Movie 08 since they both came out. I have been using the same AVCHD camcorder (Cannon HG10) with both programs, and it has worked perfectly. Now I have installed 10.6 and 10.6.1 and now neither program will allow AVCHD transfer. Both recognize the camcorder but won't transfer.
A little poking around on the internet and I discovered that Snow Leopard won't support AVCHD (http://www.shedworx.com/no-avchd-in-snow-leopard). Third party web site mind you.
So far I agree it won’t work with AVCHD. Now since both programs were developed to use one of the most widely utilized formats in HD camcorders, again AVCHD, this accidental or intentional over site smells of Microsoft, not Apple.
I like some of the features of Snow Leopard but for me the video aspect is one of the top requirements. Apple had been the leader in the multimedia revolution and this mis-step with AVCHD is it’s typical of Apple.
I have just restored back to 10.5 and every thing is working again.
Now that were around the block here is the question. If anyone can come up with a solution…that does not include the used of third party software to convert, please let me know.
And to Apple, please fix this problem, I’m already hearing the complaints with QuickTime X, and seen the headlines, “Snow Leopard, is it Apples Vista?”.

This is, to be polite, a misunderstanding. Shedworx are being careless with their terminology.
1. SL itself does not support AVCHD, but neither did Leopard.
2. AVCHD support is built in to the movie editing software (iMOvie, FCE, FCP), exactly as it was in 10.5

So you have a specific issue with your camera, you've taken that with some carelessness from Shedworx, and on that basis you've decided, incorrectly, that Apple does not/will not support AVCHD.
There were many cases under Leo where people reported problems getting their camera to communicate with iMovie. Solutions include:
1. Trashing iMovie preference files
2. Repairing permissions
3. Copying the AVCHD folder tree from the camera to disk, and importing to iMovie from there
4. Using MPEG Streamclip to convert the camera footage before importing to iMovie
5.Making sure the camera is running on mains power, not battery, and that it's in playback mode.

FC Express HD 4.0.1 and Snow Leopard...works or not?

Will Final Cut Express 4.0.1 break under Snow Leopard or are they compatible? I want to get FCE but need to know if I'm going to have to wait for it to be Snow Leopard compatible.

No way to know for certain at this point.
But it would be very, very unusual for Apple to leave the latest versions of significant applications stranded (e.g. Final Cut Express 4)
If you need FCE4 now, just get it. You appear to have an Intel Mac and Leopard, so you're about as up to date as you could possibly be. It's not a necessity to upgrade to Snow Leopard just because it's being released this week.

Final Cut Express Problem with Snow Leopard

When I export my movie from Final Cut Express using Quicktime Conversion settings it is taking up to 10 times as long to export than prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard. I have FCE 4.0.1. Mac OS is 10.6.2. This is the only problem I am having but it's a huge one. I use an external hard drive as the scratch disk with FCE.
Going back and doing a complete clean install of Snow Leopard is not an option. I have too many other programs that would have to be re-installed and no time for all that.
I have removed and re-installed FCE as someone suggested. No difference. FCE works find until export time. I use it for short on location video clips and need fast turnaround.
The movie eventually exports and the exported movie is fine. It's just taking forever. Did not have this problem on previous Mac OS.
I can edit the same video in iMovie and export in a fraction of the time but would prefer to use FCE since it has more options.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Dropped Frame Error Message During Playback in Snow Leopard

I have FCE 4.0.1 and I just recently upgraded to 10.6.1 and now I keep getting these error messages during playback saying Dropped Frames. Its telling me to try lowering my audio playback quality, increase my ram, etc.. Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard I never got these errors. I have a 8 core Mac Pro with more than enough ram and hard drive space and again this wasn't happening until I upgraded. Can someone assist and tell me why this is happening and what can fix this issue.

You can try trashing your preferences and rebooting and repairing permissions and running Disk Utility, the usual maintenance suggestions, but I think the real issue is the OS and software installation, and the only way to fix that is to redo it.

When I sync my iPod to my MacBook through iTunes new events do not show up and old events are not deleted. I am using Snow Leopard and not iSync.

I am using Snow Leopard on a MacBook. I have an iPod touch 3G. I do not use iSync it Mobile Me. When I sync my iPod through iTunes new events on my iPod do not show up on my Mac and old events do not delete. I have read help instructions that include deleting the data on the iPod. The iPod has the correct data and the Mac does not so I have not followed those instructions. I need help as the only reason I bought the Mac was to be able to sync, back up, view and print my calendar. Currently it is useless. If only Apple could have learned from the elegance of the Palm software.

Previewing videos in Quick Look isn't the same in Snow Leopard.

Does previewing videos on Quick Look in Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard no longer allows you to use the two finger gesture to move forward or backwards in the video, or is it just me?

When i login to my banks online access point a new browser is opened and it takes up the full 27" display. ca i restrict the size of web browser screen used by tme online banking service? imac 27" OSX snow leopard 10.6.8

the capacity to set JavaScript Options under the Conent submenu... DISALLOWED all of resizing of windows,
moving of windows and ability of script to hide menu bar ... this fixes the screen to available browser size...
